    My favorite characters are Michael, Tazer and Sabrina. I definitely agree that they were allowed to feel their feelings. I'm also a fan of the unapologetic level of demon time they allowed Tazer and Krazy to display. Definitely want to see how Tazer evolves now that he knows his mom didn't abandon him. I don't think we've seen the last of Krazy either.😊

    Man, I absolutely agree with your “cons” of the show! When it comes to Andre, no joke or any exaggeration, I couldn’t believe how his story of how he got incarcerated was so close to exactly what caused a cellmate of mine back in the day to be incarcerated. As someone with sickle cell and is really into comics, my mind was just blown away seeing this show. I was a bit upset because so many aspects of a story I’ve been taking far too long to finish writing was implemented in this show but all it did was give me more drive to hurry up and get what I’m doing done!

    12:54 okay, so now that you bring up Andre, I'll address that first before my main point. I agree, Andre deserved a bit more screen time but he still got a good enough amount for me to feel really impacted by his scenes. And the actor is amazing(they all are)
    I heard someone say how they don't like that Black media seems to rely on the hood element of our culture, and the road men in this show disappoints them. Here's the thing, despite the fact that they are a part of our culture like it or not, there is no glorifying criminal life in this show. The gangs suffer real and lasting consequences. Rodney depends on his powers just to sell weed. Andre is so not a criminal he fails at robbing other criminals. On the flip side the professionals are exceptional. Sabrina is the best nurse around with amazing work ethic. Michael works and so financially literature he mortgage a house, bought a car, and got his mom in a special facility as delivery man. Andre is an amazing worker that only gets fired cause of his record.

    I love your point on the first con you mentioned. I think the audience only being able to see the Tower Boys and their rivals in the first few episodes is intentional: Many people misjudge every young black guy as a hardened thug instead of a foolish and/ or angry, immature person who is misguided. I think that’s why we don’t see the actual gang members until the show is a few episodes in. We get the perspective of the Tower Boys being in over their heads after we are able to contrast them with Krazy & his gang. You have the advantage of experience and foresight, which allowed you to see what many others may not due to ignorance, inexperience, and holding negative biases and stereotypes. Young black men don’t often get the benefit of doubt or the grace of being young, foolish, and making mistakes.

      1000% agree! I watched it and also thought “These kids are DUMB” and I think that was supposed to be the takeaway. I mean, I couldn’t take the chubby one seriously after getting curved HARD 5 mins into the episode lol. I think we were supposed to always look at them as being young, directionless and in over their heads. That plan with switching the drugs was just idiotic. I don’t think we were ever supposed to see them as hardened criminals.

      @@TheturtlesageWill The UK has some of the toughest gun laws in the world. If you want to get a gun, you need a licence that is renewed every 5 years. You need to apply with your local police department and you need to provide character witnesses and the name and address of your doctor and permission to access your medical records and to be part of a shooting club or permission to shoot on private land. And I think the police need to come and inspect your home to make sure you have a safe to keep it in, and even then, there are restrictions on the types of guns you can own.
      So yeah, it's difficult to get a gun in the UK and knives are easier since they are in every grocery store, but even then, you need to be over 18 to buy one and most of the time they are blunt because there's been a increase in knife crime 🙃

    • @joyjoythewriter
      @joyjoythewriter 3 місяці тому +4

      @@kevinortegarojas Oh, good question! What I find interesting about the Tazer character, in particular, is his "attachment", you could say, to knife weapons. There has been a high Knife crime rate in London for years as a whole and you can see that he still holds that attachment in the scene when Michael teleported to the future. Even as a "superhero" it's still his physical weapon of choice which to me spoke volumes. Just something I noticed and thought it tied in well with the topic of London knife crime and it can open a door to more discussions on the matter. Just like how generally North Londoners are seen as wealthy, West London is deemed more friendly, and East London is filled with hipster types, South London is generally seen as a rougher part of the town but I would say that it is becoming more gentrified much like East London. But in some ways - and it's hard for me to explain or decipher why this is - it's more diverse than people think and more so than the show's portrayal, to some degree in the sense that there are some black people who live in wealthier parts like Blackheath and Greenwich etc. Perhaps there could have bee an slighty upper middle class charatcer as well? However, still a job well done. I would say that every character in the show is an accurate representation of people in South London. The geezer mixed-raced guy from Bermondsey, gang member Tazer who I actually think has a good heart in some ways (note how he stopped his friends from taunting the rival gang member before they realised who he was), Sabrina has an aura that feels familiar to me. I know so many women like her where I'm from so I resonate with her character (alongside her sister!) She's competent and ambitious, kind, and nurturing but clearly not one to be messed with. Andre and Michael, although they have different backgrounds, have similar life goals to do better for themselves and care for their loved ones. In fact, overall, they all have different life stories and backgrounds but they are each trying to live better lives - Tazer included. More on Tazer and the gang culture scenes: I would say that most teenage boys are that way in London let alone South. I genuinely believe that deep down they are good people and are more sensitive than they let on. But I can imagine that it would be difficult at that age to show a gentler, kinder side when you're constantly surrounded by violence and poverty, to be honest. It's true that young impressionable boys like that are easily preyed on and they feel the need to constantly prove how "hard" they are to fit in. That's all they've been exposed to and everyone wants to belong somewhere even if it isn't ideal. It's all about keeping up appearances or peer pressure until they're in too deep. Anyway, I feel like I'm babbling on, but that's my personal two cents. But then I haven't had similar experiences to them. I just go by what I have been told by people who have so 🤷‍♀️.

    This was such a great show! My boyfriend and I started it Sunday and were immediately hooked/finished by Monday. I loved all the characters backstories and the way it played into their personalities/powers. I will however say that I wish there was a bit more connective tissue that brings the main cast together prior to the heist gone wrong. As for the people saying the antagonist not speaking much, the final scene leads us to believe that we’ll get that expansion in the next season. If Netflix renew it for season two, I hope they deathly keep the same people, especially the person riding in the Director Rapman but over on terms of the plot I hope that they really explore more of the consequences of their powers because I’m always been a sucker for the balances of powers like you gotta have your limitations as well as how strong it truly is when it comes to their powers. As much as I'm not a fan of the gang business, I suppose we mostly focus on Tazer because he would have the most going on. The rest are grown men and women either holding down jobs or trying to find one. Even Rodney, though he's a drug dealer, wouldn't be much fun to follow around. Tazer's life provides the suspense and small battles you need in a superhero production while the others are still getting used to their powers and not into fighting yet. And Tazer helps flesh out Krazy's world, shows us why we should fear him and gives his superpower reveal impact.

But Supacell just pulled me in. And you enlightened me on why that may have happened. The whole Black thing!! They actually did HAVE TO BE Black!!! You kinda took my breath with that statement! I too loved the love angle. There was a lot of love in this program...Man and woman, mother and child, father and son (a really close to home for me topic), man and man (friend), sister to sister, I really connected with that angle. I do think a lot was left out but that just gives the writer/director LOTS of stuff to work with. I wish Andre (the strong one) had more power. The strength thing didn't actually seem to be enough to keep up with all the others but I guess they can add something to his repertoire in the coming seasons. I got this guy I kind of know to watch it and he says he's a super hero coinsure so when I talked to him again he was halfway through the 5th ep and he wasn't as geeked as I was but he didn't hate it, lmao.

I was familiar with the British actor, Tosin Cole acting in Dr. Who and several U. S. series. I provided Supacell with a rating of a 10 on IMDB. The story takes place in London in the United Kingdom focusing on 5 young black British residents with super powers due to a linage in their family to Sickle cell anemia or having the trait. People of African descent, including African-Americans are 1 in 12 that carries the sickle cell gene. I found the storyline interesting because Howard University in Washington, D. C where I live has done a lot of research pertaining to sickle cell helping to educate black Americans on this disease.

I think the fact that people from the hood can tell these kids are fucking up while those who aren't see them as trying to get it. That is a real difference in perspective we deal with in everyday life. Just looking the part is enough for outsiders to think it's genuine. I agree that Andre's story with his son specifically could've been fleshed out a lot more, but i didn't think the show took the teen gangs serriously, i think they ewrre supposed to be funny and jsut kids being kids, bonding through street ish, they also showed how most of or all that we really met had fatherless homes, and how Andre was trying to save his son frrom that life he was drifting toward because of his absence. I loved how they displayed that because that's how many get into that life in real life, i think most statistcally. So I sppreciated that for me, i'm glad they didn't romanticize it though, that's what i usualyl look out for. I like how it showed they were in it to be seen, to get power, money, and respect and most of all connection, but showed how this isnt a good path to get those things emphasizing the danger and corruption involved.

    We were SUPPOSED to be seeing what life is like for young men with criminal intent in South London. There's no way that we were looking at big-time gangsters. Crazy, and the "elder" men were the real gangsters. The ones that can get away with heinous crimes due to them being in league with the corrupt government and law enforcement. Tazer and his crew aspire to be on that level, but they ultimately don't have the fortune, the heart or the ability to get away with what top gangsters get away with in the UK. We forget that Rapman knows the streets of South London and clearly understands how the gangland element works for the different age groups involved. Its a mistake we make assuming that there is one modus operendi for gangsters globally and ignore the cultural and environmental differences. Yes being in a gang has the same sentiment everywhere but what constitutes a "real tough guy" differs from one country to the next. Do we stop calling them gangsters in prison because they dont have guns?

    Excellent review & analysis... spot on commentary. Impressed with everything Supacell offered - particularly loved how there was diversity with the Black characters/lives - even with Rodney - to add that extra layer of a "mixed raced" character and the authenticity of him/his life. Like you, hope season 2 is given the green light - letting Rapman do his thing without interference.

    Great review! Enjoyed your take and agree with your pros and cons. You did miss mention of the white Mom shunning off her son due to a racist husband. Wish that storyline was given a bit more context. As an African American, viewing and learning about black life (Jamaican ethnicity or otherwise) is important. Comparisons of poverty and even gang street life was an eye opener for me. My kids tell me I need to watch Netflix’s Top Boy as well. Americans thrive on assumptions and ignorance when it comes to racial strife and sheer societal racism. Black communities of all ethnicities around the world can learn from each other. Supacell was fascinating and powerful in that regard for me. Had not seen a film or stage production that entwined Sickle Cell Anemia as a key plot point. Genius! Thanks.

    You make some very astute observations! 🤣 "the white people not getting to speak" for the first 2 episodes.
    It was interesting as an American to see the gang culture depicted in South London; very different from here (like you, I grew up in poverty in the hood), so I forgot that in London, guns are banned, so probably only elite gang members like Krazy would even have access to them -- hence the use of knives.
    Re: Andre being underutilized. I felt the same way about Sabrina's arc - it would have been nice to see her really grow in her powers especially since she's the only female in the crew. I saw some people talking online that they felt the violence against women in this show was overdone. While I winced to see Tazer beat the girl up in the alley, I know that it's a reality in certain corners of the world.
    Overall, 6 episodes felt a bit short, when it usually is 8. But I appreciate Rapman's vision and really enjoyed this series! It's a fresh take on the super hero genre.

Just saying, Chante is the ds sister who gets assaulted at a club and beat down by her drug dealing lover while Sabrina is the nurse with a good head on her shoulders and for the two girls walking down the street the light skin one remained untouched while the ds one was the set up chick that got beat down. At least Dionne got protected for a time...

    Re: the early gang scenes. I think we are supposed to believe that Tayo and the others are "hard men" and all that at first on purpose.
    Mainly as a narrative device, but also because tower block gangs are a real issue in the uk, especially in London.
    However, just like you pointed out, us older black/brown people think they're being dumb. But for them, they legitimately see themselves as young and invincible, and I think the series did a good job of making the audience feel like they were they only gangsters around.
    It makes it more impactful, when we see that they're outmatched in comparison to the "olders", and Tayo seems to forget that only he has powers and makes big mistakes because of that.
    I don't think the audience us supposed to like or venerate Tayo and the other young gang, as this show definitely isn't trying to glamorise gang culture.

    I would argue the fact that the main characters are all black doesn't matter. And I love that, as a black guy, I don't like that we have to have our race being pointed out all the time. In this show, all of the characters, are just normal people trying to live their lives (except Tazer) Who coincidentally happen to be black. It's fantasy escapism that doesn't force politics and real world problems into my face. I just get to enjoy some sci-fi fantasy with black characters and I don't have to worry about a message I love it!

    13:22 Nobody has ever said that a black person couldn't be a vampire or a mermaid or an alien; that has never been the issue in this day and age, the problem is race/gender swapping original characters and changing them from what they were meant to be, not for creative purposes but for the manufactured need to earn diversity points and be viewed as inclusive, that is where the issue comes into focus, people want writers to create original stories( like supacell! ) that doesn't sacrifice storytelling for political ideology and identity politics but can strike a winning balance between the two that can be universally relateable to EVERYONE without it being solely about one extreme or the other, I for one love this show and I hope It does get picked up for a second season and I especially hope that they don't destroy the quality of it just to propagate their own overzealous agenda of pushing out "THE MESSAGE" all in the name of Inclusivity and diverse representation for that type of trope can age and get old real quick. 😁😎😉💯🔥👍🏻

      Unlike a lot of people on this channel I do watch a lot of sci-fi superpower etc. shows. And unfortunately you do see arguments boiled down to “in my head I saw them as white men”.
      An example being the recent discussion about another UK based show “Doctor Who” the premise has always been that the main character can change. Once the doctor becomes a woman or black or gay or anything that doesn’t conform to their image you see the vitriol come to the surface.

    • @vmaninc.761
      @vmaninc.761 3 місяці тому +1

      @mhaka621 Well, that's only because of how they force the character to fit into their ideology and viewpoints; they don't allow the character to naturally progress to that kind of change to where it's relateable, instead it feels rushed and forced down everyone's throat that this who the character is now not what code of honor they live by or what their beliefs are but what they identify as and what their sexuality is, That's more important than the struggles to be a good person, to overcome the temptation of doing harm to others, Their story of becoming a good person gets overwritten with who they're sleeping with and why they should be accepted despite who they sleep with or what pronoun they go by, what they FEEL they are and why they deserve top quality respect for their pronouns, not for the sacrifices and choices they made for the greater good of others, I've said it many times before that is un-organic, lazy writing and is why people are not buying into the hype nor tolerating this overwhelmingly bias behavior anymore! 🙄😔😁😎😉💯🔥👍🏻

Sure people may have valid arguments for these kinds of debates but racists absolutely co-opt those arguments for a chance to say ‘Black people can’t be ____’

    • @vmaninc.761
      @vmaninc.761 3 місяці тому +2

      @kevinortegarojas Oh, i definitely and fully acknowledge that has been the case with some people; but that is a small percentage compared to the enormous percentage of individuals that are justified in screaming a character's gender or race does not necessarily need to be changed in order for that character's timeless classic story to be relatable to the modern day, keep the characters the same while freshing up the story and change it when needs to be changed in order for that character to be relatable to this day and age , don't just do a complete overhaul on them for inclusivity points or to check some politically correct box, that is all I'm respectfully saying, adopt the positive methods that were used in the past and use them to further improve storytelling for future generations to learn from. 😁😎😉💯🔥👍🏻

      In my mind the powers are like a muscle and when you first start working out you can only manage a few reps and lighter weights before you have to tap out. But if you keep exercising soon you can train longer and/or go heavier. So they just don't have that stamina yet? And just like muscle targeting as well, you can be seemingly doing the same movement but subtle changes in posture or stance can affect which one gets activated and that explains why sometimes their powers wouldn't work the minute they tried to just do it again because they weren't targeting the right muscles or whatever to activate their power.

    I've looked back in my life and I've always seen nothing but mainly white people in superhero movies, comics and cartoons. If there ever were any Blacks in marvel or all the other superhero genres or the multiverse, they have always been too powerful, and therefore worthless.
    I've never thought we needed cartoons or movies to be inspired. As a proud Black man, I see people like Martin Luther King Jr. and so many Blacks who invented many things that are part of our daily lives. Most people that use the stop light they are stopping at something invented by a Black man. The live saving blood transfusion process was invented by a Black man. Many other acts of heroism where the Black man counted the cost of his life just to ensure the rights of ALL people. That's a superhero. Everything in the cartoon and comic books and in the movies are just entertainment, not inspiration. SupaCell is very good entertainment but, it is my sincere hope that regular people escape their blueprint and become inspired by real people who are doing real things while risking their lives to inspire those who are still on the fence about their daily reality.

However, in the 21st century, a time dominated by multi-media it is hurtful to not see yourself represented. I’d argue that all of the contributions by Black people make it even worse. Like damn we did all of this for you and we still can’t get on tv? Representation matters. It’s about feeling valued and validated, not by white people but by the opportunity to tell your own story. I agree with everything you said. I just think that both can be true. Thanks for watching!

    I think we are supposed to view the teens, as children making bad decisions….just kids trying to be adults

    I know we want black super hero sagas, but the writers are still coupling our community with some 90's idea of gang slinging and drug running. I didn't really see the black perspective of the desire to be free from the violence and poverty and oppression forced on us. instead minor shallow stupid emotionalisim rooted in the stereotypes created and enforced by yte America. if its going to do something more akin to black futurism or black sci-fi meaning focused more on the development of what Blk people WANT for the FUTURE,its may be taking to long to elevate. the whole "oh we got powers but oh no we cant escape the getto . . . .at some point you've got to let blk people have something more than just tragedy Cherrios. . .

      I mean I understand where you’re coming from but this is literally a story conceived and inspired by the actual life of its creator RapMan.

      @@kevinortegarojas sure, but that doesnt mean certain expressions cant be vetoed by gatekeepers. Ryan Reynolds went through 20 version of Deadpool before he was given the green light by brian feige. the gang stuff and drug stuff are themes blk people have repeatedly asked to not be used in our limited opportunities for on scene storytelling

    I'm really glad that they didn't put too many sex and the lbgtq things in it. We finally got to watch a black serie that didn't push any of that Hollywood shit to us. You could watch it with your kids, parents, grand elders, aunties. Hopefully they keep it like that🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

      Whats with throwing the other half of my identity unde the bus!! Queer people exist and queer black people exist, it just so happens no black queer people are in the show yet. And honestly it wouldn’t make the show any less awesome if someone with the supacell happened to also be on the queer spectrum.

      @@TheDawnofVanlife I'm not throwing nobody under the bus, I know that the lbgtq people exist in the black community, but in hollywood they are pushing that agenda on us. So it was refreshing to see that we still can have a black movie without all that.

      Lmao so stabbings, shootings, and women being assaulted by men is family friendly to you but gay people simply existing is not? You can't make this stuff up
