“Empty” was an example of the way that The Velvet Rope was ahead of its time with topics such as lacking connection within your community and being able to connect to a greater audience.
It all goes into the theme of belonging, of sharing the experience of being an outsider. This is what ties the listeners to essence of this album. It’s to show them that although society says they’re different, that we all share these feelings.

This album was very personal. She traversed a deep depression during the sessions of the album. She stop the recording three times during the long making of this album (two years). Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis understand Janet and was very empathic about the situation. She cited in the interviews her most personal album.
''Together Again'' was originally written has a ballad and recording has a ballad. The deeper remix was the song that originally conceived. But during the making of the album, she changed idea of how the song was sound and wanted to make a up-beat vibe to celebrate the life of his friend (died of AIDS) after the death. So she changed her melody and her composition and transformed this song has a House song. ''Together Again'' was her biggest hit to date and was labeled has her signature song.

How relevant is “Empty” today? The emptiness of being in love with a person you’ve never met before.

The mind of Janet Jackson is beyond. She sampled The Exorcist score on the title track and she is describing being set free from your inner inhibitions, insecurities which some would say your is demons….get into it. Your favs could nevah!

    Hey Tré,
So…. E-C-N-E-I-C-S-N-O-C is Conscience spelled backwards. Conscience is a cognitive process that elicits emotion and rational associations based on an individual's moral philosophy or value system.
This album is a MASTERPIECE, you hear
me!? This album literally saved my life and helped me figure out a lot of things about myself.

A brilliant album. Ahead of its time, and the Velvet Rope Tour was amazing as well. My personal favs are The Velvet Rope, You , My Need , I get Lonely, Got Til It’s Gone and Special . Everytime is also a beautiful ballad and the video is one you have to see. Together Again is just spectacular and very special to me as I’ve lost many friends to AIDS .

Speakerphone interlude. The other voice was Lisa-Marie Pressley, Michael's ex-wife.
Together Again was written for the gay friends Janet lost to AIDS.
What About. There's a live performance for the VH1 Fashion Awards in 1998. The producers wanted her to perform Go Deep, but SHE wanted to (and did) perform What About, on live television, with graphic choreo...
Special is really significant for me. This song helped me recognize my depression.

@@TreMcLeod_ it was pretty much a genius move. When Janet got into the studio to do the album, she’d already wrote the songs….all they had to do was get the tracks together and make final changes. This album is so deep, I am STILL to this day getting gems and meanings of lyrics that I didn’t understand at age 17/18.

cool thing about the internet connection thing, Janet was 1 of the celebrities who was a early part of "chat room culture" in like the mid 90s when that became a thing she did chatrooms as herself & recently her best friend during these days Tina Landon ousted that she use to make fake accounts on her forums to get how her releases were being received by her fans, and so the song is talking about the thrill of getting all the love & emotions from your own imagination when you're reading from people (its like how excited you get when I comment with my love for what you do), but then the realization that when you step away "WE NEVER MET!", BUT the feelings you feel when we're online at the same time talking to each other builds that intimacy as if we never need to. That's the gist of Empty
I should point out too I love this album got major love during shut down because it's like this is an album for that entire experience, think about how we had to be with our feelings, we got lonely, we got our dance on with some of the Instagram parties, but it really captures that whole experience in 1 album 23yrs later, deep right?

    • @J.Fro90

and right on the money about Special
My 5 favorites are I Get Lonely, You, Go Deep, Got Til It's Gone & Together Again....my top 5 are subject to change at a moments notice with this, Janet. & Rhythm Nation though. There is no song like I get lonely for me, and the way it fuses jazz, gospel, blues,& pop! chille. what's not talked about enough (for my liking anyway) is the amount of risk she took willy nilly fusing this with that, mixing things you wouldn't think would work together & finding out they work flawlessly together. She took real chances with her sound that none of her female peers at her level did the same way (that's not dissing them, alot had their own ways too), but really nobody does it like her from Control onward

Great review. This was a masterpiece of an album that did not get as much radio airplay as it should have. Also Janet has a history of not releasing some great songs as singles like the title track and What About from this album or This Time from the janet album. You should watch Janet perform what about at the VH1 fashion awards as well as the entire Velvet Rope tour which is known to be the best female tour in history.
Oh and you were right about the message in you. She was spelling conscience backwards as the chorus talks about looking in the mirror.

Idk about the “not receiving radio airplay” part. The album sold 7-8 million copies. Together again stayed on the radio DAILY…I get Lonely did so well, it had 2 remixes, Together again had 2 remixes, Got Til it’s Gone did very well on the RnB charts and Go Deep was heavy in the clubs and dance radio. This album was heavy with RnB/Dance.

    • @njt7117
      @njt7117 2 роки тому +2

Well Together Again was the primary song to get top 40 airplay. GTIG and I Get Lonely did not get much top 40 airplay which is why they did not chart too high. Go Deep had decent airplay and Everytime got far less airplay than a similar ballad from the janet album (Again). I used to listen to the weekly top 40 charts every week so I was disappointed that this amazing album did not get as much airtime as her 2 prior albums.

@@njt7117 exactly it didn't compare to the success of the singles during Control, Rhythm Nation & Janet, where Velvet Rope became the fist of her albums since Control to not have at least 5 songs hit the top 10. The label dropped the ball in the singles promotion, this album had way more hit potential than what it achieved, and I'm really curious about what happened there myself.

@@njt7117 ''Gone til It's Gone'' didn't well received by radio in US (unlike the Europe who it's was a big hit) and the album starting to falling out after the released incites to released ''Together Again'' rapidly and ''Together Again'' was labeled has her signature song to date, including in US, because this song spent 46 weeks in the charts and was also her biggest hit worldwide to date. ''I Get Lonely'' was a hit in radios and reaching the top 3 in US and was a worldwide hit.
