Balin is so likeable, it makes the scene with Gimli at his grave in Moria even sadder. :(

It's the expression on Bilbo's face that I like, when the doorbell rings and he's just about to start his supper. Any introvert knows that feeling: the arrival of unexpected company at the wrong moment.
There’s an underlying theme here I like. Gandalf can’t predict the future but he has intuition. For generations he’s felt he needed to keep tabs on hobbits, when anyone else would’ve thought they were useless. When Bilbo came along, Gandalf knew he needed to involve him in world affairs - not knowing why. And sure enough, not only did Bilbo become a safe-keeper of the ring, but he ended up raising or influencing the next generation of hobbit heroes, who all played crucial roles in defeating Sauron. All tracing back to Gandalf drafting Bilbo.
Gandalf has intuition bec he is a Maiar. ( an angel ) disguised as Wizard. He studied hobbit bec of intuition??? Whereas Saruman studied the lore of the ring. So he became corrupted by the power of the ring. So of all 5 Istari that sent to Middle Earth, it is only Gandalf that is successful in their mission.
Why Bilbo.. Perhaps it's bc I'm afraid and he gives me courage
@@evenstar1608Well, no. Melian is of the Maiar, and she wed Elu Thingol of Doriath. She was the mother of Luthien, who married Beren son of Barahir and from them is descended Arwen Evenstar wife to Aragorn.
Also, there is no indication that Radagast the Brown or any of the other Istari failed in their missions.
Though, of course, Olorin (Gandalf) can be said to have accomplished most.
Still, let us not forget that Sauron, too, was of the Maiar under Morgoth (Melkor) of the Valar.
Gandalf was taken by child Bilbo's behavior as we see in one of the extended versions. He didn't forget those many years later which explains his dismay when he calls on Bilbo.
@@CassandrashadowcassMorrison Gessss, we're talking about the Istari, not Melian. Bec, Melian is not istar. Maybe all the istari are maiar. But not all maiar are istari. Why the Maiar disguised as istari sent to Middle Earth?? Bec they are there to guide and help the people against Sauron. But they cant fitted against Sauron openly, bec they have the same power. So now, Saruman the White and the leader of istari had failed miserably bec he was corrupted by the enemy. Whereas Radagast the Brown, studied the birds and animals of middle earth. And he is there when Gandalf needs him the most. While the other 2 blue wizards went to the east. In the first place, why they went to the other continent, when Sauron is in the west of the middle earth. No one knew for sure.

Hi Addie, some small trivias...
- The white bearded Dwarf is Balin. The fellowship found his tomb in Moria right before they face goblins and cave troll.
- Gimli's father - Gloin is in this band of dwarfs. (He's the red haired dwarf who thought Elrond was insulting them before Gandalf clarify that Elrond was only offering food).
One problem with the Hobbit movies though is that Thorin was actually meant to be oldest member of the company, and Balin was actually a little younger than him (according to the book). He looks considerably older in the movies.
Why do you spoil it (Gloin)? In due time, she'll stumble upon it...
@@romanvajdik I don't think I spoiled anything. Gloin has very little screen time in Hobbit trilogy and if I remember correctly the first film is the only time his name being mentioned (first at the introduction in Bilbo's house). Besides, she most probably already watch all three movies before she upload this.
@@englishlady9797 Likely because they didn't want an elderly man as the lead. It was already hard enough for a 72 year old Ian McKellan doing actions scenes as Gandalf, and he wasn't even the lead.
The Hobbit book is quite a simple, whimsical childrens book. The LOTR books are more mature, darker and serious.
True, but the Hobbit films were the opposite of simple. They tried to be LOTR and ended up being too complicated.

To an extent you can look at it that way, but there's another whole layer underneath, The Hobbit is also a story of war and its futility (based on Tolkien's experiences in WWI) and at its core - although children don't really get it at that level - The Hobbit is a story of Thorin's descent into madness. At least that's my take.
I really like the Hobbit. It's always compared to the best trilogy ever. I think it's unfair to judge it that way.
I think it's not really unfair to compare. The Hobbit trilogy hat double or more the budget, the same director and a similarly star-stacked cast.
The only reason it isn't as good as the LOTR movies is that they got greedy and thought they were better at creating a story than Tolkien.
@@Azaghal1988 From what I've heard the production was a bit of a nightmare. Jackson originally had a smaller role in the whole thing and had to jump in halfway through to try to save it.
@@joshuawiedenbeck6944 yeah, the f**kups were mostly the studios fault. Jackson was delt a bad hand when he took over.
I'm still a bit annoyed we didn't get Guillermo del Toro's movie.
@@Azaghal1988 In some of the "making of" material you can see Jackson just absolutely stressed and wiped-out by the whole thing. He never wanted to make them the way they ended up being made.

I think the biggest problem in Hobbit is simple, the book Hobbit was made mostly to children, and Peter wanted to do something for adults and somehow take a little bit from The Lord of the rings but most from the Hobbit. I personally really like hobbit triogy and I think they did good Job, esspecialy I like the idea of the Necromancer, Radagast and the return of the Sauron.
A good rule of thumb with this trilogy is to remember The Hobbit as a book was written as a children’s story despite being reworked into a prequel so the tone will differ from TLOTR. TLOTR was a once in a lifetime trilogy and despite it being easy to compare, it doesn’t do much to help this trilogy in that case. With all the studio meddling and chaos that went down I’m sure you can still enjoy these movies for what they are

That's a lot of the problem, it just makes it all the more confused. Because they can't seem to stick to that. Had they made the movie for kids, then they should have made it for kids. Yet there is gore, violence horror. Then if it's for adults, well all the over the top silly moments with little stakes take away from in that aspect.
@@Gandoan Very good point Gandoan, these films definitely would have worked better with a consistent tone, and a shorter runtime ;)
It's sort of like a quote from Bilbo at the beginning of Fellowship of the Ring trying to describe what the ring was doing to him. Stretching the book over three films made it feel "thin, sort of stretched like butter over too much bread". If they had stuck with the original plan of making two movies out of it I think the story would have been much better, they would have been less tempted to add characters and story around those characters. I have no problem with adding in the White Council sequences, that did happen behind the scenes of the dwarves heading to Erebor. But then Jackson and New Line came along and New Line, hoping lightning would strike twice, insisted on 3 films. Didn't work as well.
This is my favourite of The Hobbit Trilogy it's the most charming. Can't believe it's 10 years old now!

In the Fellowship Bilbo tells the children a tale about trolls trying to decide how to cook him and a group of people and then the sun came up and turned the trolls to stone...these were those trolls. Also when Frodo is injured and Aragon asked Sam to find Kingsfoil, before Sam mentions that they are at the same spot and the trolls are still there and you can see them.
btw just so you connect some dots from these movies to the LOTR ones. The redhead dwarf (the one that thought Elrond was talking crap to them) is Gloin, Gimli's father. The old dwarf (the one that tells the story of Thorin vs the pale orc) is Balin and its his grave they found on Moria where they fought the orcs and the cave troll (the one that impaled Frodo).
I would love to give you amazing info about this part.. (THESE ARE NOT SPOİLER. )
First off all you remember Bilbo's birthday at lord of the rings right?
He told a story to kids about trolls who wanna cook and eat himself. He Also said to kids that, At the dawn, they all turned to stones.. You saw that story was true..
Another one is that; Remember Moria mines at lord of the rings. Gimli mourns for his uncle near the tomb which made stone. Also pippin accidently drop a skeleton into the well.. Gandalf wrote the tomb writing that say " Balin, son of Fundin lies in this tomb.."
That Balin is the white beard dwarf , one of this 13 dwarfs.. That stone tomb is Balin's grave.
Also there was a skeleton in that graveyard. Wrote something in the notebook. " We cannot go out.. They are coming.."
That dwarf is the dwarf which uses sling. He is youngest dwarf in this dwarf group..

I used to hate the idea of Martin Freeman as Bilbo because I did not want Ricky Gervais’ whipping boy in my Middle Earth movie. But he ended up being perfect.
Please tell me you remember Balin, lord of Moria, the one who ruled Moria until being slain by an orc? The ones who’s tomb they found in the fellowship of the ring? Ring any bells? And the trolls? When Frodo had been stabbed? Remember? They stopped next to the trolls
for the other two movies, you should react to the extended versions.

I watched the 1977 Hobbit animated version on TV as a boy and bought the book the very next day. Followed by LOTR and then The Silmarillion.
Your obsession with birds throughout this series has been truly bordering on madness.
Don't worry, I'm a grown man who has read the books over 20 times and seen the movies more times than I could possibly remember, and the beauty of Middle Earth and its inhabitants still makes me feel the full spectrum of emotions every time, especially when watching people experience it for the first time.
You should watch "The Last Goodbye," a song by the actor who played Pippin. You WILL feel everything all over again
That dragon is the smallest dragon in middle earth, by a wide margin. Crazy to think about.
The thing about the birds spying on the Fellowship is actually due to Radagast and Gandalf as well.
In the books, Radagast meets with Gandalf saying that Saruman wanted to meet him. Being in a hurry by knowing that Frodo had the Ring, Gandalf told Radagast to send birds and beasts everywhere to spy on Sauron, and to report to Saruman directly. This backfired when Gandalf later realized that Saruman was in league with Sauron.
I love the hobbit trilogy, I recommend doing the extended versions but 🤷🏻♂️
Thorin Oakenshield and Balin are two of my favorite characters and Martin freeman was always my pick for young Bilbo
That's amazing, how I watched so many reactions to this, but ultimately you're the first one, who said about the font and music in the start. I watched LotR and read the books many-many times and when Hobbit hit the cinema, I was there in IMAX and the first time I saw this font again, I started to cry immediately.
Gandalf is an angel and thousands of years old. He has that knowledge to draw on and make good predictions. Not everything is magic :)

A tip for folks with too little time to read: excellent complete audio books of both The Hobbit and LotR are usually available on YT (though they also get pulled down with frequency!)... I listen to the audio books while doing household chores, and at night to lull me off to sleep!!!
They are versions that are also read by Andy Serkis, himself. I've only listened to part of his reading of the Hobbit. It's very well done.

I'm so happy that you decided to check out The Hobbit! I remember during my freshman year in high school there was a school project in English class and my choice of book was non other than the book itself! I remember how excited I was to read it while the movie was just right around the corner in December of 2012!... 2012, nearly 10 years ago! I know people have their opinions about this trilogy, but I love the trilogy and the book equally as how it is on it's own right. I'm looking forward to more Hobbit reactions and revisiting the beautiful world of Middle Earth! :-D
The Smaug is probably the scariest dragon I know. Provides great contrast with the hobbit.

One of my favorites tidbits is when gandalf says there are two blue wizards but he can't remember their names.... This is due to copyright laws. Their names are only mentioned in the Silmarillion.... Which at the time of making this movie the studio didn't have the rights to therefore they couldn't say their names

Nice to hear your non-verbal noises again. And your commentary is on-point too. You'll find eventually that this first part follows the book fairly closely, apart from the warg chase and Radagast, both welcome additions. Later the extraneous material pulls in several directions, but it's all a highly entertaining romp through magical Middle Earth, so just enjoy.
Keep in mind, the hobbit was (unlike LOTR) intended to be a children's book. and it's a small one. the studios took liberty with it because of LOTR's success to expand it into 3 feature movies, rather than the short read it is. SO if you're expecting LOTR, you're outta luck. there's only one LOTR. and also that the source material was based on children as an audience.

Radaghast,not Gandalf
The feud between dwarves and elves comes from 1st age when Thingol, Lúthien's father hired the dwarves to create a jewel to put Silmaril (it is 1 of 3 jewels created by Fëanor, considered in the Tolkien universe as the greats and most beautiful jewels ever created, and one of the causes for the war in the 1st Age.) that was given by Beren, (a human) in his quest given by Thingol in exchange for marrying his daughter Lúthien. The dwarfs after making the jewel did not recognize Thingol's payment, and thus beginning a quarrel which ended in Thingoil's murder by the dwarves, and with that starting this feud that lasted thousands of years until the 3rd age, (where the Lord of the Rings happens.) with the great friendship of Legolas and Gimli, who was the cause of peace between the elves and dwarves again.
I have a love-hate relationship with the Hobbit movies, but what I like most about these movies is the visual part and having more middle Earth to see, even though the use of CGI is very excessive.

well yeah, dwarves emphasis on the S. Gimli is the only singular living dwarf we see in the entire LotR trilogy with any relevance (except the two shots of the seven dwarf lords in the intro and the two background dwarves in Elronds council but they dont even have lines). And even then we dont get that much of their culture or history from that.

Great reaction! The movies aside, I think this is the better part of these stories. LoTR is undeniably epic, but this is the real life changing, good old fashioned, cozy down home adventure tale. Hope you enjoy it!
Wish you watch the extended versions of the hobbit. They added more scenes as well as provide more detail to LOTR trilogy

Speaking only for myself, I don't think the Hobbit trilogy was bad, just inappropriate. Imagine your friend commissioned a world-class architect to design them an elegant townhouse, so you commission that architect to design you a cozy cottage in the country. Unfortunately, the architect designed another elegant townhouse for you instead.
Nothing wrong with the townhouse (in some ways it's an improvement over your friends') but what you needed was a simple cottage...
There were no dark lord in this time. I love how light hearted/tempered Lord Elrond is in this moment.
Addie, to help you with identifying the Dwarves, here's a list of the family groups that make up the Company of Thorin. They are listed in order of their proximity to the royal bloodline of Durin (Durin the Deathless was the original Dwarf in Middle-Earth, all Dwarves are descended from him):
-Thorin, and his nephews Fili and Kili.
-Balin and Dwalin.
-Oin and Gloin (Gimli's father).
-Dori, Nori, and Ori.
-Bofor and Bombur (the super-fat Dwarf), and their cousin, Bifur (the Dwarf with the broken Orc axe lodged in his head).
I actually didn't notice a broken axe in Bifur's head

When they were trying to design what each Dwarf in the Company of Thorin would look like, one aspect of their appearance that they explored were battle-injuries and scars. And at some point, Peter Jackson thought it would be completely hilarious is one of the Dwarves had a broken Orc axe embedded in his head, and Bifur was chosen as the Dwarf to bear that wound. His actor, William Kircher, also had to learn how to ONLY speak Dwarvish for the films, because when discussing this injury and coming up with Bifur’s backstory, they decided that because Bifur suffered this severe head trauma, he developed something akin to Foreign Accent Syndrome, and as a result, he can ONLY speak Dwarvish (he cannot speak any other language, not even Common Tongue/English).

Great reaction, Addie. My favorite part of the movie is definitely the "Blunt The Knives" scene because of how funny Bilbo's kitchen fears are lyrically expressed. I did see this movie & The Desolation of Smaug in IMAX 3D HFR (High Frame Rate). I totally regret not seeing The Battle of the Five Armies in IMAX. Fun fact: I have a friend who is a cousin of Andy Serkis, who plays Gollum.

I like, as you will find out, many things and people that tie back to things that took place in The Lord of the Rings. Like finding out how Bilbo acquired "Sting", the sword that he eventually gave to Frodo in the Fellowship of the Ring. Remember in the first movie, Bilbo at his party was telling a story to the hobbit children about his encounter with the trolls, and the trolls all being "turned to stone". Remember when Frodo jumped onto Gandalf's wagon in the beginning of the first Lord of the Rings movie. Frodo teased Gandalf about how he had been labeled a "disturber of the peace" because he stirred everything up in Hobbiton by taking his uncle Bilbo off on an adventure... and Gandolf replied "if you're talking about the incident with the Dragon, I was barely involved". Nice to get a full prospective of how that was not quite accurate.

"Technically no", fun fact, Bilbo actually makes that same argument in the book that he wasn't lying because there weren't any more Hobbits, or one of the trolls takes it to mean that, I can't remember.
Yay! I like the hobbit movies they are closer to the book and adding the Gandalf part that was suggest in the book.. the love story was a little forced but I still love it!

I wish there was a better reason for Smaug to hoard gold. Even if it was just that sleeping in gold exfoliates his scales or something. I know the 'dragons love gold' trope goes back centuries and all, but it never made sense to me. Dragons don't buy stuff. I mean, if you have a mountain full of gold and refuse to spend a single coin of it, then the value of all that gold is precisely zero.
I think that is what Tolkien was saying. You have all of this wealth and desired objects that you don't need, but a sense of power arises in denying others something they could use. And that's why he hoards it; without it, he has no power and therefore gets no gratification from others' suffering. The value of the gold economically, for him, is zero, but his own self worth in his mind is endless.
Honestly, probably a good call to watch to movies first. Like people always say, the movie is never as good as the book, so if you read the book, then watch the movie, you're disappointed by the movie. But if you watch the movie, then read the book, you can enjoy it both times.
While it's definitely different from the book, I still love this! It's charming and funny. How can it be so funny and so gross at times? lol And Kili and Fili makes me laugh so hard with the whole troll thing 😂Martin Freeman, omg... every expression on his face as Bilbo

I was surprised when I found out The Hobbit was going to be a trilogy. It's just one book and it's a shorter book than any of the LotR books.

Being a Doctor Who fan myself I know Sylvester McCoy as The Seventh Doctor in the show
Well, now. As to the books by Tolkien. The "Middle Earth" saga we might call it now extends to some 12 Volumes (not counting The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, Unfinished Tales, The Children of Hurin, Beren and Luthien, and Bilbo's Last Song.)
You will need plenty of yummies for your tummy to hand if you GENUINELY want to immerse yourself in this world 😉
Just so you know...I have never regretted making it part of my inner mythology.
When you're finished here may I recommend the books of E. R. Eddison (The Worm Ouroboros and the Zimiavian Trilogy, George R. MacDonald (especially Phantastes and Lilith) Mervyn Peake (The Gormenghast Trilogy and Titus Awakes---the last finished by his wife Maeve after his death) The BBC filmed this last as a television miniseries and it stars Sir Christopher Lee as Flay, Lord Groan's butler, and he is awesome in it. Neve McIntosh plays Lady Fuchsia Groan (I mention her because her character was the inspiration for the song "The Drowning Man" by the Cure, if you remember that one, if not, ask your Mum. Yes, you can find it on UA-cam. You can also find The Gormenghast Miniseries there, incidentally.
Hey, I remember when The Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show do, for me, The Cure in the 1980s still seems fresh.
I mention all this because of your reaction to Tolkien and I think you adore this stuff!

For those whom have a bit of trouble remembering the names of the Dwarves in the company: There are 3 sets of 2 and 2 sets of 3 - the rest is a rhyme game.
I don’t think it necessarily doesn’t follow the plot of the hobbit it just adds side stories that Tolkien had written in other books I believe

Yes, forget about Harry Potter's dragons, Middle Earth Dragons were closer to demi gods than animals. And Smaug is the smallest of them !!!
Remember, Gimli was son of Gloin. Also, remember the story that Bilbo was telling the children at his party of when the trolls had captured them?
The problem is that everyone will try and compare this to LOTR, which is a natural thing to do I suppose but it underestimates the grandeur of these films..
The LOTR films took quite a few liberties and quite a fair bit of it wasn’t true to canon, but it didn’t stop the movies from being awesome.
Same for The Hobbit.

Any comparisons to LOTR is kinda unfair because the bar was set so high. And the fact that the studio insisted it be made into a trilogy when it could have been done in 1 or possibly 2 movies at most, led to some necessary filler which I'm sure some enthusiasts weren't crazy about. In any case, I personally can't get enough of this world and PJ's vision so you won't hear any complaints from me 😉
I hoped it was the extended edition like the Lord of the Rings and not the theatrical cut. Honestly the extended edition is so much better and gives greater context.

It is told by Tolkien that the two Blue Wizards, named Alatar and Pallando, were sent to the East and South as emissaries to those peoples of Rhun and Harad, to mitigate the influence of Sauron among the Men of those nations. It is unknown what happened to them, although secret magic cults were founded in those regions that carried on their traditions.
They add some things that aren't in the book but I like it
I like the Hobbit too. The worst thing in trilogy of Hobbit was too much SGI and too op Legolas.

One of the changes: in the books Radagast never appeared in The Hobbit, but had a brief appearance in The Lord of the Rings, although not as a comic relief as seen here.
What kind of sad soul cannot sit down and have fun watching the Hobbit movies?! I only feel pity for those people.
Because the book is a childrens book there’s a bit more robust humour in the hobbit movies. It’s pretty accurate to the book - they’ve just added a few characters and included bits from the silmarilion (which isn’t a childrends book). The silliest bit is the goblin cave in the mountains, which was a bit overdone.
By the way, Balin is later the lord of Moria, whose tomb is shown in LOTR. Also, the stone turned trolls appear in the fellowship of the ring as a landmark.
