Many years ago we learnt that lesson that you can't trust everyone, so we have a deposit and stage payments and final payment before it leaves your workshop. The motto is don't trust anyone. If they don't pay up tell them you will sell their engine after giving them plenty of notice saves you the hassle of bailiffs and worry. We are not in the motor trade but same rule applies.
9:14 You should connect a vent pipe through the wall for the "washer" steam, it'll cut down on the flash rusting on all the iron and other ferrous items in the shop.
Happy new year to Lee, John and Isaac, Up front payment is the way to go Lee, If someone is serious and dedicated to getting their engine sorted they should be more than happy to pay up front. I would have no problem with that 👍
I had engine block work etc done 2023 sent the parts crank rods etc. 50% payment for quote to stand as is no increase. (Before any work started )Then 50% after machining work done upon collection or returned goods. Worked well.
Love your work and look forward to the MkII van project. Excuse my ocd(!), but 2 litre BDAs used to be called BDGs, 1800 I think BDE, the 1600 was the BDA and the 1300 was the BDH - apologies if someone else has mentioned this!
High Court Enforcement needs to have a judgement in place . If they go to an address and your 'customer' has no personal assets to seize you just end up poorer than before. A better approach imho (if you know where they can be found) is to arrange for them to appear in Court to explain why they haven't paid (You will need to deliver the summons personally to the defendant). They will need to provide proof of every bit of income and expenditure for- I think - 2 years. This may not be in front of a Judge, more likely a Court Official. This appearance takes approximately half a day , after they have compiled all their evidence. If they fail to attend or provide sufficient evidence - and this is the important bit - they are in Contempt of Court which is a CRIMINAL OFFENCE! The penalties for this can result in a stay at His Majesty's pleasure. Unless they have completely dropped out of society and are living in a bus shelter with a whippet and a bottle of cider, most people just can't be doing with the hassle of a Court visit. HCE doesn't scare the regular conmen. If they ask for the keys to the M3 in the drive they'll just say "It's my partner's car." etc. etc. If you're lucky they may come away with a PlayStation 4 and a signed photo of Ant & Dec. So long as you know where they can be found to deliver the summons (someone can do this on your behalf), the Court letter can be sorted easily online and costs peanuts in comparison to some of the other options. Good Luck :)
Yea, payment as you go. Then its an investment for the customer, and if they run away you can get your money back by flogging the engine. If I remember rightly you need to have a policy in place, for example when the work is complete you will be notified by your preferred contact method, and will have xx days to complete payment and collect. You will then get a reminder at xx, and xx, after six months of no payment or agreed arrangement the 'product' will be come Barum's property to dispose of or resell to recoop costs. [Also remember to make it clear that there is a 'storage fee' after the first notice xx days have elapsed. Also, it might not be a bad thing to ALWAYs update every customer every 2 weeks (ie e-mail) even if no progress has been made, helps you keep track and them engaged. [and maybe somebody calling you after a few months asking, "have you done the work yet?"]
That dude is obviously trying to delay the debt collection process for as long as possible. Don’t be surprised if he will now start to claim that he never asked for the work to be done, and he will now try to overturn the Court order. Just let the bailiffs do their thing.
If it’s a default CCJ, then you are wasting your time, as you can easily get them set aside. I’ve been in the receiving end twice, and won both times, the legal against myself was DCBL, and I defended myself in court.
Part payments upfront is perfectly reasonable in this day and age. Would imagine progress payment as well…so leaving about 1/3 on completion and sign off.
Easiest way, conditions well explained. Deposit required before work commences, if a big job periodic payments required. balance due before pick up. If they balk or question this do not do their work and consider yourself lucky
Oh a VERY Happy New year to you all at Barum Engines. Hopefully we might see some progress with this BMW E30 and getting the kit car prop shaft done too. What happened to Isaac's Subaru Legacy?? 🤔
Happy New Year to you guys there. Love watching the channel and content. I can’t wait to see more of the MK2 escort van😊 My da had one of those years ago when he ran the business (mechanic/fab) I’ll never forget the night we pulled the 1300cc and put a 1600cc cross flow engine and a 5 speed box. Quite often I hit my head off the roof of the van while he was driving over hump back bridges😂😂
I had a Mk2 Escort van late 80's early 90's. Had a 1680 X flow. But it was a fairly famous van in Liverpool. It was the notorious "Blue Surf" van. Bloody thing was very quick.
Happy New Year Lee, John and Isaac. I have been watching your channel for a while including when Paul was working for you. Would be good if you could include a visit from Paul, would be interesting to know how he is etc. Also good decision having the door bell, the health and safety thing. In many places one has to sign in and out even going into the office.
HAPPY NEW YEAR. Lee once the container arrives and you get the workshop floor cleared. You will have lots of spare room to store more stuff on the workshop floor !!!! True story.
What software tools do you use to manage the progress of jobs? Is there a way that each jobs parts can be contained together for storage in the container. How will you ensure container condensation doesn’t degrade parts? What the plan if the container ever gets full? What turnaround time do customers want and could it be achieved?
How many V8 cranks do you balance each year? Is it worth investing in some new equipment that will allow you to do this in-house, then offer this as an additional revenue stream.
Hopefully you get to keep the engine and hopefully you get your money some people are so strange the customer has cost hisself some serious money I suspect he is drowning in debt and court action. Let's hope now your refreshed you can let things go over your head rather than taking everything personally trust me the more you go on about mental health the more it will consume you. Hny
When you do a gov collections online claim, they have 3 options: pay, dispute, do nothing. And doing nothing is the worst thing they can do, and the best for you as you can dictate terms. Had to do that once, in the end the client called me to say (once they had run out of time) to say if I proceeded with the legal action I'd get the money slower, but they could make a part payment that day. I called BS. Strangely, I had the full payment a few days later...
I took a customer to the Small Claims Court. He failed to show so I was given judgement. I then had to fork out for the bailiffs to go in. They reported that he lived with his girlfriend who claimed to own everything in the house. I said what about that nice BMW he owns. Apparently it could not be seized because it was worth quite a lot more than the debt. I just ended up further out of pocket so after that I found it more productive to make my own arrangements for debt collection.
Well done - get paid! High Court Enforcement can't do anything until you have something from High Cout to enforce! Shouldn't be too difficult if you have the MG engine owners name and address.
Stage payments are the way to go, I used to own a conservatory business, most genuine customers didn't mind paying stage payments the ones that argued, I Just walked away.
Definitely better to have an official body deal with the outstanding unpaid bills. If you sell the motor, there could be comeback. If it is siezed by the courts for disposal to cover fees etc. It's out of your hands. You have just used due process to settle a bill. I need to get some machining done on some motorcycle crankcases....but I am going to make sure I have the full amount set aside before I say yes to the work.
Ive instructed high court bailiff enforcement in the past .. they came back empty handed with nothing if value to offset the debt. You will have to hope the land rover isn't on finance so they can remove and auction that to recoup your money.
Have you told the High Court lot you have the engine? If they can't get the money out of him, they can come and seize it, as it is an asset of his. I know it sounds daff, but then it is in the possession of the High Court and can *legally* go to auction. If HCI seize and send, there's no comeback on you. Hoping it don't come to this and you get the cash you're owed but it got to be done On a full big job like this, stage payments of 90% of value of the work? i.e. 8 hours boring @ X per hour x0.9 = X paid before progress to next stage is started? A signed agreement to charge credit card for future payments is another option
@@watchanything-c7r true *but* BE can't legally sell it themselves, as legally at this point it is the property of the non paying customer. HCI _may_ take advice as to which auction to put it in? That way it should realise a better price. And it them seizing it get it out of BE's place No matter the outcome, the non payer still has to settle the balance.
Happy New Year's Guys Would it be worthwhile to build an engine stand with cooling solely to run the engine for a short time to possibly avoid access " warranty " B&ll$h!T ?
Going back to 2008 to the last credit crunch, a lot of companies stopped credit because customers where having trouble paying and it was the customer of the customers where having issues. Upfront payment exactly what you are moving forward with is needed to protect your business because unfortunately some people can have financial issues
Customer needs to respond for that to happen. Because they have failed to stay in contact I would not be inclined to do that because it could turn into a case of them missing payments and it taking forever to get it sorted. File a court claim and then just straight to high court enforcement not the toothless court bailiffs.
Loving the videos and projects but just wondering when the projects are all completed have you got enough space to store them? Wouldn't like to see them left outside 🙈

The MG engine sounds very costly and with the owner off the radar, so to speak, I'd look into if he's OK and not pushing up daises.
I bet that dude with the landy v6 found a salvaged engine and dropped it without the common courtesy to tell you to stop the rebuild on the original
I was thinking that, and he probably thinks because Lee has the engine he doesn’t have to pay him.
Why these people don’t communicate I don’t know.

Good on you to get part payments.
