At the beginning of the vid, I was like : pffffff I know all that stuff, no point in watching that one! Then I remembered that you are Maximus and that's what I like about you! No matter if I have a thousand hours of experience, you'll keep teaching me stuff! That J key for cycle charge is awesome!
Maximus Decimus Meridius Thx for the video, I never thought cycle charge and use J (with the cav), much easier get out the cav and less bugg when they have problem path finding out =) Do you use shortkeys on mouse as well?
"I only know that I know nothing"! Its how I feel watching your vids Maximus! lol The J Key for cav charge.... awesome! These mechanics videos are really useful! Great job!
I are still the best Total War : Rome 2 - youtuber. Even after all this years you are a legend. Your voice / nordic accent and authoritive way of speaking is very easy to listen. If there any one i wish to return is you. Legend !
I always thought controll of Rome 2 is garbage. Now I see it's just different from old tw games and has tons of usefull stuff. Thx the vid man! Keep going!
It would be great if u put ur all mechanics videos into seperate playlist it would save lots of time people to find all this materials. Same with battles
If I only had such a playlist.. ua-cam.com/play/PLr7HLoRrUHO7T03BGRf2E1Y3lwlC_Fx77.html And maybe one for only tournament battles :D ua-cam.com/play/PLr7HLoRrUHO6zrRUSspo99f80yPqUBlOC.html Hmm, maybe if I had somewhere to put all my playlists: ua-cam.com/channels/QgpBwfpEfDMw7gspgN84KQ.htmlplaylists
Maximus Decimus Meridius Relly sory man, I thought that when u start video which is in some playlist I will always see that playlist right next to video, and this isnt working with ur videos, so thats why I didnt know u made those playlists
See the button on the left, below the unit cards With a fast forward-symbol? You can click that to make them reform in double speed instead of walking speed. With skirmish cav though, I prefer doing it with mouse control as that's faster and you might have to change direction alot. Keyboard controls are more useful for moving entire formations - but you can still press the "run"-button with the fast forward symbol to make it happen faster.
I know this is an old video and an old game but in case someone is watching and incase they need this tactic. If you put infantry into a cumbersome formation like pike phalanx or testudo, you can left click the unit then left click drag the formation backwards only 2 or 3 feet and they will do an organized retreat, keeping their shield and pikes forward while walking backwards. This is super micro intensive but the implications of retreating from a pike phalanx while still blocking missile fire seems huge. It's a bit hard to pull off and charging infantry and cavalry will still keep up with the retreat, but many real battles were won using a feint engage before surrounding the enemy army on the flanks.
Thanks to you i understand how to move my troops. You transformed my pathetic playstyle to something medium. Thank you a lot for these vids, i should have watched you before. There is absolutely no good info about how to use the keys in rome.
This is awesome. Great guide! ... Kinda odd how they move so much during an about face command (J key). It should be just a simple pivot in place to face the opposite direction. But it's still pretty quick and good to know.
throwing the mouse around is great if you're using the arrow keys to control your units. people do that a lot in AoE2 since keyboard shortcuts are key in that game so having a hand occupied to just move the camera around is too expensive
awesome, dude with the right key bindings, and maybe some macros or modded game input, you could use the mechanics to get a perfect controller setup to direct control units and selection of units with a controller. that would be the greatest thing ever.
I got the commander of the armies of the north, general of the felix legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, marcus aurelius, father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife and he will have his vengeance in this life or next guy teaching me how to command, it's an honor sir.
how can u display on the battlefield where ur soldiers will go after u send them. i mean the yellow points on the map which disappear after u send ur units.
My question is: How do you keep something like a cavalry unit on its fast speed? Maybe im doing it wrong but lets say I want to turn my unit, or move it in anyway, I have to right click and tell them where to go. This puts them on the slow movement speed for a split second before my second click goes through. Not such a big deal, but if you have a melee cav chasing my skirmisher cav, that split second could get them caught (and has gotten mine caught). I was wondering if there was a way to circumvent this? Anyway, like a previous comment, I thought I would learn nothing. I did learn a lot, it will be hard to break my old habits but these shortcuts/keys could make my play much more fluid. Thanks!
I don't find the shortcuts useful. I use g to group but that's at the start of the battle. In battle my fingers are on wasd and I takes too much time adjusting my fingers using keys and all the time I can't move the camera. Much better imo to just use the mouse for all the movements and keys for camera
Maximus Decimus Meridius I would say it has to do with the keys not being too well set up. I mean, for a lot of those hotkeys you've got to take your hand of the mouse and that's highly undesirable.
man whenever i set up a formation my commander's on the left. i found out how to have him on the center but idk how to move the cards in the bottom inside the formation to another Slot (in the middle) if that makes sense. is there a button for that or something?
is it possible to have the units not try to hide? even if I lock my front line they still try to hide in bushes etc and my line dont remain a good long line
awesome videos you put up there, but i got a question : How do you for charge a frontline with your own frontline ? do you just press forward or click each troop individually into the enemy one ?
Usually it's best to do it one by one if you're fast enough. You can attack an entire frontline if you have equal numbers and they're facing eachother directly by grouping the units With CTRL-G, and clicking a single or double attack order. If the units move sideways however, things can get very messy. If so, pressing backspace and giving individual orders can make the units unfucked. If you only need minor adjustments, it can be OK to give the group attack order and only give new orders to the units that are out of position. Might be a topic for another video.
Maximus Decimus Meridius you could combine that with an explaination of bracing of hybrid units. (thureos spears or lusitani infantry) and if it is better to take a charge instead of counter charging in some cases.
Speaking of group formations: what about AI controlled formations? I tried to give my infantry to AI and with sword infantry AI did great job allowing me to concentrate on microing cav and missiles. With pikes it was absolute disaster. But I did it in big battles against AI armies, only couple of times. Did you ever tested this? How good AI controls groups of different unit types?
How to make my missile caval in lock group formation to concentrate on 1 target. Its was there in empire total war naval war. I think it was clt keyboard. Does not work in rome2
Hero of Marathon use a tactic called defeat in detail. Use a large infantry to pin them, then focus your arrows and cav on each unit at a time. Its costly but you can wipe out elite units fast!! Another way to harrass rome is having skirmishers that constantly kill legionaires as they advance. Experiment with leaving a gap in your line and having archers shoot at the exposed enemy. Good way to break the centre early. Lots of diff ways to do it but in all honesty- i always play rome FOR THE GLORY OF ROME!!!
You'd have to ask the AI about that, because I have tried AI attack orders and while it works against a completely static enemy the AI shits itself when units start moving. I thought it would be good for pikes with AI attack/defend but it ended up being a complete disaster since the AI can't prioritize when up against several units moving.
/re mc mundn: how can u display on the battlefield where ur soldiers will go after u send them. i mean the yellow points on the map which disappear after u send ur units.
Props to those soldiers demonstrating this during the heat and while tired
the ai Commander is like "WTF is going on?!"
At the beginning of the vid, I was like : pffffff I know all that stuff, no point in watching that one! Then I remembered that you are Maximus and that's what I like about you! No matter if I have a thousand hours of experience, you'll keep teaching me stuff! That J key for cycle charge is awesome!
Hahaha. Thanks. Glad you found something useful.
Wow. Using j for cycle charging is huge.
Absolutely. You can do some seriously effective cycle charging with it, especially when using several units: ua-cam.com/video/Noi301oKGY4/v-deo.html
Maximus Decimus Meridius
Thx for the video, I never thought cycle charge and use J (with the cav), much easier get out the cav and less bugg when they have problem path finding out =)
Do you use shortkeys on mouse as well?
+Thomas Mynard Yes, for sure! I've been playing for a while and didn't know about it. Thanks Max!
thank you i was about to lose it because i didnt know what jayque ( j key) was
I thought he was saying G key
Never knew you could turn around the units with the J key. Its 2020 and I didn't know that.
My biggest take away from this is J is awesome.
"I only know that I know nothing"! Its how I feel watching your vids Maximus! lol The J Key for cav charge.... awesome! These mechanics videos are really useful! Great job!
Glad to hear it!
Bro, this is the most useful video I've found since I started playing a couple of months ago. Thanks!
I wish I knew about the rotating of the formation with Crtl. like 5 years ago... Holy shit I've always wanted something like that
wow I learned a lot haha, that j key thing is cool.
Never knew j could be used for cycle charging. No more spamming (at least till I forget in the heat of battle and go the old fashioned way)! :D
Aw Yeah!
CLICK CLICK MOVE YOU STUPID HORSE!!! Shock cav kill 100 on a charge and get slaughtered pullin out. Deffo have to try j cycle charge
I are still the best Total War : Rome 2 - youtuber. Even after all this years you are a legend. Your voice / nordic accent and authoritive way of speaking is very easy to listen. If there any one i wish to return is you. Legend !
Just watched this, helping folks 5 years on, cheers g

Dude that's awesome. The best thing about this video for me is the cavalry charge. Woahh

Hm, I'll have to look into that. Kind of a UA-cam-noob myself.

The "R" key also changes a selected units movement speed
Wow. You're truly a master of this game. Your mechanics videos have been extremely helpful for me.

The more you know.... thanks man, this could come in pretty useful
I always watch this video every time I get back to Rome 2.
many years playing this awesome game and just right now found out about the control arrows keys uau
thx man

Awesome guide, thanks!
Thanks for answering my question, Maximus. As usual, awesome video!
I was waiting for this video in my life. Subscribed
Hey, excellent content, my friend. Thank you, your advice helped me to understand the finer details of gameplay.
J-key now that is game changing, thank you!

Very useful video, lots of stuff i should have known.
Also Love the title ;)
Hehe, thanks!
Great video, thank you
Thanks :)
Great vid! Keep up the good works!
I feel like neo when he learned kung fu.
That J key!!
awesome, dude with the right key bindings, and maybe some macros or modded game input, you could use the mechanics to get a perfect controller setup to direct control units and selection of units with a controller. that would be the greatest thing ever.
Perfect! Just great! Thanks!
Awesome video - still really relevant I think in games like atilla too. I read about the j key last night and am excited to try it later
Amazing video. Thank you
I'm 6 years too late but I learned all this when I was playing medieval II
I got the commander of the armies of the north, general of the felix legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, marcus aurelius, father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife and he will have his vengeance in this life or next guy teaching me how to command, it's an honor sir.
wow. very informative vid man
Very helpful thanks
really helpful thanks!!!
Great tips
Maximus, i served with you at vindobona

very useful 👍🏼
wonderful info ty!
Thanks!
How do you line your units up without gaps between the groups

Same here!
I find myself reverting to mouse for everything alot. I think it has to do with habit and practise, under stress one reverts to the familiar.
Maximus Decimus Meridius under stress one reverts to bring a fat noob hahahahhahahahahshshshahahahahhaah
Maximus Decimus Meridius I would say it has to do with the keys not being too well set up. I mean, for a lot of those hotkeys you've got to take your hand of the mouse and that's highly undesirable.
Why do you have to take your hand off the mouse?
Can u pls make a video about relinquishing control

How do you perform a controlled retreat to draw the enemy in?
Is there a way to move back and keep facing the enemy like at Cannae? With hoplites? Like how you could in arena.
3 years later with same question, like if there's a "give ground" stance or a way to feign without potentially losing your feigning unit.
is it possible to have the units not try to hide? even if I lock my front line they still try to hide in bushes etc and my line dont remain a good long line

How do you defent a roman force when you are a Normaci fribe or horse faction. Would you like to make a video.

i am now in legendery mode it is hard as hell they beat me in every battle i have no idea HOW
I knew none of this and have over 200 hours
Nice video. The noobs like me could really use this. Thank you! By the way, what's the key to see where are heading or attacking all the units?
Spacebar I think.
Thanks! Spacebar it is.
Pretty sure it's space bar bro.
Legatus Marcus Thanks :D
Maximus Decimus Meridius You're welcome! And thanks again.
3:20 wtf
your Rome ii mechanics is mixed with Warhammer random battles please fix it ? it's confusing my autistic mind tarts
