That line is one the funniest laughs I've had in years. That and the first 5 questions bit.
@@danh8804oth are perfect examples of D&D player shenanigans that made me love this movie. The Speak with Dead bit was something pulled almost directly from a game I was a part of, and the jail break 100% looked like the actions of players who rolled subpar on their Persuasion check and decided to make a call, not realizing that their story lowered the check needed to sway the abjurers. lol
@@Mrryn similarly, I like to imagine the DM of this story had this whole sequence planned out where Doric would be captured and the party would have to save her, but she just kept streaking Nat 20s until the DM just said "fine, whatever, she escapes" and wadded up that page
@@danh8804 That's TRUE! There are streaks of GOOD luck as well as bad! I've been on hot streaks like that. ANNOYED my GM... 🤣
The Hither/Thither staff is totally something a GM would make up in the moment after a player screwed up the puzzle. LOL.
Oh yeah. That's 100% an ass-pull moment. In terms of non-D&D story it's bad, but as a D&D joke it's PERFECT
But in this case it's actually brilliant writing, because the whole theme of the film is people going way out of their way to get something when they have what they needed all along.
They didn't need the bridge, they had the staff all along...meaning they didn't even need the helmet. They didn't need to kidnap Jarnathan, they pardon was going to be approved (setting up bookends). They didn't need to get the tablet, he already had the family he needed.
I was totally imagining a DM being so pissed, "I just spend a week thinking up this puzzle!"

Rather something the DM would make the Group available so they could find alternative paths when screwing up such puzzles, as they would have needed to have the item beforehand.
I am convinced the writers basically had themselves a normal D&D campaign and then turned it into the script for the movie.

That's what The Legend of Vox Machina is. It's an animated version of Critical Role's first D&D campaign.
He gives everything to Simon because Simon has a bag of holding. Also, the speech about "I wasn't trying to bring your mom back. I was trying to bring my wife back." Makes the end so much better since he actually brought her mom back 😢
Definitely a film that pretty much anyone can enjoy. If you don't play D&D it's just a fun romp with some genuinely heartfelt moments. If you do play, you will laugh your ass off with how relatable every ridiculous antic and wildly off the wall plan these characters do, as well as all the fun easter eggs.
A sincere movie, a rare thing these days, that never took itself too seriously.
My brother, my younger sister-in-law, and I were pointing out pretty much all of the spells used in the movie. Plus, there's a cameo appearance by the characters from the D&D cartoon from the '80s in the arena.
Totally! I know nothing about D&D and if Im being really honset, I only watched it in the theatre to stare at the Bridgeton guy (I was killing time). But man I came out loving this movie WAAYYYY more than I ever anticipated and its currently one of my fav movies! Just so much fun.
The puma with the squid tentacles is a Displacer Beast. Also, the adventurer party they were competing against in the Arena were a reference to the D&D cartoon series.
The displacer beast is pretty much the D&D mascot.
My cousin is a commercial director and worked with Chris Pine before (and I'll tell this story to everyone lol)... My cousin was directing this commercial where (fake) glass globe lights would explode all over the place. Chris Pine was in the commercial. It was several 16 hour days.
The commercial involved Chris delivering his lines, the car zooming by, and the 'lights' (made of hard sugar) would explode. Between each take the crew had to sweep up the fake glass and reset up all the lights (which were over 100) and make sure they were in the exact right place... It would take a lot of time. So Chris was mostly just standing around waiting. He had a trailer but he still spent the time on set chatting with the crew, he offered to help clean up & to help with anything they needed.
My cousin (aka the director) said Chris was very nice to everyone and they all loved him. He never once complained and he was very patient and professional.
My cousin also said a lot of A-listers are very rude to the crew & he's actually kicked them off productions because of it. But he said Chris wasn't just professional he went above and beyond and was extremely nice.
So while Chris is talented, I kinda love him more for just being a decent person. 🙂
The dude just gives off that energy, seems like a really cool guy.

It's not shown in the reaction but the part where Chris Pine gives his daughter the poorly made mittens as a gift is funnier when you realize the lore behind the city they're in.
In D&D lore, just Northeast of the city of Neverwinter, is a volcano that's home to a bunch of fire elementals (which is actually shown in 8:45). The volcano in question is next to a river that winds down to Neverwinter before making it into the oceans. The volcano actually heats up the water in the river as it flows down to the point where it never freezes over, even in the heart of winter, giving the city its name.
I went to see it in theaters and saying that I enjoyed it more than I thought I would is an understatement.
Before they jumped out the window the judge said they were pardoned lol. They jumped for no reason.

Love the bit where the Dragonborn says "But we approved your pardon!" Ed and Holga didn't even need to use Jarnathon, which makes the escape that much funnier because it was so pointless.
My favorite thing about this is that most movies like this now feel the need to be three hours, so the first 45 minutes would’ve been the backstory that Pine knocks out in five during the parole hearing narration.
This movie made me so happy. Like you guys, I never really got a chance to play DnD as no one around me was really interested but still have some knowledge from games like Baldur's Gate (I cheered when it got namedropped!), but I absolutely loved this. The perfect Pirates of the Caribbean-level of humor and adventure that's just full of imagination. One of my favorite movies this year.
I have been waiting forever, and now finally, these knights of integrity have decided to react to this epic movie. The hardest task on this planet, and yet these two distinguished gentlemen do it. Two Paladins of the interwebs about to dive into the Dungeons and Dragons 🙏

Saw this in the theater with my gf and had no idea what to expect from this movie (she’s a big D&D enthusiast) but was very pleasantly surprised!
I tried to get more people to see this movie. I bought it on DVD and Digital as well. Saw it three times in the theater - I did my part to try to get a sequel. Unfortunately, I don't think it ever will .. unless digital and DVD sales are amazing. My take on it is that many people did not go see it because it was titled Dungeons & Dragons, and they thought they needed to know something about D&D in order to appreciate it.
Honestly think it will get a sequel, the filmmakers said they knew the first installment would take a loss but needed to be made if ever to make it into a franchise. So hoping the demand will grant a sequel and even more ppl will watch it
I hope we get a sequel! I did my best to convince everyone I knew to see it. Even got my mom to watch it, and she's not a fan of DnD or fantasy - she loved it. It's a great movie for everyone, regardless of your knowledge of the game. What I love is how many nods they also throw in if you are a DnD fan, or of Forgotten Realms.
I love the way they use practical effects in this movie, especially with the puppets and animatronics.
Practical effects for the non-humanoid characters made the movie that much better.
As a fellow D&D player, I was really impressed with how they played off some of the mechanics of the game. The Speak with Dead bit was HILARIOUS. It really felt like a great role for Chris Pine, who I'm not usually a big fan of. Every character was casted in a way I would actually imagine them when playing! They all fit their classes perfectly. I just loved it-- felt like the movie was made by people who also play/love D&D, so fun
I love how accurate this was to a regular game of D&D you can see the points where a GM would just say fuck it and cut the players a break lol also the NPC straight line walk Xenk does is classic
They actually *did* pardon them! You can hear it as they're crashing out the window, where the Dragonborn shouts it out.
Such an entertaining movie. the marketing department failed big time with this one it deserved more attention!
The marketing department had to overcome multiple previous attempts over decades that, to put it mildly, did not catch fire. Tough job. I hope this gets enough attention in streaming land to get us a sequel. :)
They were stuck battling a boycott by DND fans because of moves wizard’s of the coast made.
@@Derpng Here in Europe (yes outside of the States, shocker!), there was no marketing or advertisement. The only thing I saw about it was its trailer when I went to watch another movie at the cinema, and it was cringy as hell. They basically put all the punch liners of the entire movie in a 2 min video. I'm sorry, I still think it deserved better, and everyone can have their own opinion, but generally the consensus seems to point that way...

A funny scene is when Simon performs something and mentions the smell of fresh cut grass.
A famous D&D group "Critical Role" - responsible for "Vox Machina" - had a small robot playing in a campaign - named "Fresh Cut Grass". And after a while his companions asked him about his name. And he replied his former owner named all her robots after the smells she loved.
And all went like: awww.
And Fresh Cut Grass continued: "There was oat wheat, there was apple pie, there was p*ssy..."
😂😂 The players could hardly contain themselves anymore.
Laughed my ass of at the other team in the arena being the kids from the 80s dungeons and dragons cartoon!
Am I the only one that LOVED the cameo’s of the 80’s cartoon throughout the movie? As much as I loved this movie, I want a live action version of the 80’s cartoon!!!
I never played Dungeons & Dragons, but this was a fun movie and it worked well as a fantasy heist adventure film. Although it definitely felt predictable and formulaic at times to me. The beginning at the prison was the strongest part of the film to me. Also, whoever at Paramount decided to release this a week before the Mario movie should be fired.
I had no interest in this movie at first, but then i got curious. I ended up liking this movie. I never played a DnD game before but i do like some fantasy adventures. The laughs here are pretty good here too.
The problem with DnD is getting good players together. I feel like the actors understood DnD and played their characters unto almost perfection, which is better than I can say to the past DnD movies.

The entire Wildshape chase (where Doric is changing from shape to shape) is actually a reference to the Rule of Cool where the rules are slightly ignored in favor of an epic moment (Dungeon Master gets final say of course). The Wildshape chase shouldn't have lasted anywhere near that long, but they accepted it as Cool, just as you did.
Yeah, they'd already gone Rule of Cool when they let the Druid Wildshape into an owlbear

Great reaction. To me this movie is a testament to how to stay true to the source material while making a movie that even those unfamiliar with D&D could enjoy.

It's a crime this didn't do well in the theaters. This was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. It was like a combination Guardians of the Galaxy and Lord of the Rings. I wish this would get a sequel.

@@CChissel It didn't make it's budget back in the theater run. It's still a GOOD film. It just didn't make any MONEY initially. That's okay. It's in good company with films like Big Trouble in Little China. Which also bombed in theaters but is now considered a classic and HAS made back it's money many times over in (originally) VHS sales, later DVD and Bluray.
The same could happen with this film. Nobody seems to dislike it. In fact it's gained quite a following.
@@logandarklighter Yeah, many films that are regarded highly didn’t do well at first or in theaters, one that comes to mind is The Thing. I don’t think you can really call a film bombing if it didn’t make its money back immediately, as long as the majority of people like it, then it’s not a bomb imo.

One of my favorite movies in a long time. Best fantasy-comedy since "The Princess Bride" yes I said that. Funny through out but really brings the emotion at the end with both Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez delivering sincere drama when the movie needed it.

This movie made me feel like a real game of D&D with my friends. Having a few drinks, cracking jokes and plans never going as planned.
I love this movie! I am currently prepping to run a session in 2 hours. I played in College and my young adult life, but stopped when I had little kids for about 7 years. Then I started playing again in 2016, and I've been DMing for about 5 years. So yes... I love this movie.
You missed my favourite joke. As they're kidnapping Johnathan, the lizard judge yells "BUT WE APPROVED YOUR PARDON!"
The tentacle used in the trap is a spell called Evard:s Black Tentacle. Warlocks, Wizards and Sorcerers can learn it, and is named after the guy that created the spell.
Mordenkainen meanwhile is the personal player character used by Gary Gygax, the creator of D&D himself. And a major lore character even after Wizards of the Coast bought the IP.

Honestly was so relieved this movie was a legit hit instead of yet another awful adaptation.
I love how they showed what happens if you break a consetration spell
Themberchaud, the pudgy dragon, is an established part of the official D&D setting. The story is that he was hired by a city of Dark Dwarves to act as the city incenoratory/forge spark. Basically his job was to set fire to things whenever asked. As such, he basically sat around, not moving for shit, while the Dwarves brought him all he could want to eat and all the treasure he could want. As such, he put on a little weight.
Folks unfamiliar thought Themberchaud was just a joke, but he was actually an in-jokefor the long-term players.
Something I didn't catch until a reaction:
"Ford is a real son of a bitch."
"So you blame his mother for his corruption?"
End, when Ford is appealing his sentence:
"It all goes back to my mum."
I enjoyed this movie a lot, it really captured that feel of character-driven storytelling with a side of chaos that you get at a TTRPG table. DnD in this case, but like, all systems share the unpredictability that comes from being a table of individuals reacting to a story and eachother in the moment, even before you add the chance element of dice rolls. And this managed to catch ALL of that feeling somehow.
Also, it was visually stunning, leaned into physical effects rather than overdone CGI (and the CGI that was there was good), every scene was interesting and full of detail, it was WELL LIT, just... UGH *gnaws on it * so good to LOOK at! Nobody was wearing shades of mud, nothing was so dark and "atmospheric" you couldn't SEE anything (*side-eyes recent fantasy shows*) and the worldbuilding they did without dialogue was fantastic. None of it slowed down the pace at all.
The Speak With Dead spell was 100% a scenario that could have happened at a DnD table, loved the lampshading of the "arbitrary" questions, and you could imagine the DM feeling petty enough to answer EVERY question, and players either rolling badly or just not paying attention for that first body, then getting serious after that.
The "jaguar" was a displacer beast! And they did it so well you barely noticed the 6 legs :D I loved all of the creatures we got! Owlbears! Mimics! A little sad we didn't get a Beholder, as far as iconic creatures go, but what we did get was great . (The walking brains were Intellect Devourers. They... do what they say on the tin, hehe.)

If you want to watch more unique, DnD-based, character-driven fantasy, with a lot of fun but a lot of heart too, you could try The Legend of Vox Machina animated series, it's based on the story told in the liveplay show Critical Role's first DnD campaign, it lifts a lot of the improvised story directly from the table, and it's produced and voiced by the same people who played those characters for years (plus a stacked NPC voice cast) Worth a watch! (unless you already have, in which case ignore me, but also I've watched it more than once and it benefits from a rewatch, because a lot of details go by fast.) [/waffling]
ANYWAY, yes, love this movie, great reaction, sorry for wall of text.
One of the best and rarely mentioned things was how you could actually SEE the fights. Rather than a 30’second fight with 50 quick cuts in it where you can’t even tell what’s actually happening.

This movie is packed with inside references to the pen and paper game. It honestly feels like a real game, with all the small funny things that happens. Like the resurrections, and the staff mcguffin because the players failed the overly complicated instructions. (Oh, and the fat dragon is canon. He grew fat on eating dwarves)
There is no way the writers haven't played dozens of DnD sessions.
I guess I might have eaten some dwarves as well.

But then again, red dragons are chaotic evil as well, so...
They actually had the main cast play a D&D campaign based upon the script and incorporated some of it into the final production.

I loved this movie (way better than the last one we got), and could almost hear the dice rolling sometimes.
The magical thing is that this movie Works even for non "gamer" people or even "RPG" people

If you guys want some more fun, irreverent, and adult humor in your DND content; prime has a great tv show called "Legend of Vox Machina" it's an animated series that follows the adventures from the 1st campaign of a real world dnd game run for and by a bunch of professional voice actors over at Critical Role on twitch, there are two seasons so far with season 3 on the way. (Also their 2nd campaign is getting animated as well)
I saw other people hating on this movie but it has easily moved up to one of my favorites and I love your reactions so much, so thank you
I played a campaign once where we did not select our classes, it was decided by a roll of the dice, I wound up playing a paladin, the opposite of my usual rogue character. The DM advised me to play everything literally, and be brutally honest. The result was basically the Xenk character in this movie.
What this Dungeons & Dragons did for fantasy is what the first Guardians of the Galaxy did for sci-fi. Complete joy and fun with misfit characters becoming their own family by the end.

Anyway, I don't know D&D, but I do know fantasy and I agree with you guys the comedy level on this was excellent. I won't watch scary, gory fantasy. There is an easter egg in the arena scenes. A barbarian with horned helm and furry shorts goes to one of the chests, i swear it is Bobby the Barbarian from the D&D cartoon.
It's fun to think of things on the fly as DM...Compromise is my #1 Rule. Seriousness is dead last. Also seeing the Cultists of the Dragon brings a tear to my eyes, I love their outfits.

25:59 Those with funny clothes are the characters from the cartoon of D&D, I don't think they are so well know in the US as they are in Brazil where most of kids from the 80' to 90's grew up watching this cartoon. In the movie room where I went to watch the movie there was a huge number of people 35 years old or more that went CRAZY in this scene.

Mordenkainen is a badass wizard in the lore of DnD. A Seal of Mordenkainen (or Mordenkainen's Arcane Seal) is, therefore, a magical lock that is VERY difficult to get past.
The jaguar monster was a displacer beast, and not a fell stalker which unfortunately is not something that exists in d&d (5e at least, and based off a quick google) but that is an absolutely sick name or a monster and I might have to steal it for my fantasy book or homebrew a monster for one of my campaigns

I heard someone say this is basically guardians or guardians was basically a DD party lol. Does kind of make sense. The paladin def gave me Drax vibes. Chris Pratt and Chris Pine are similar characters too.

My favorite joke in the movie is that Bradley Cooper is a halfling AKA a Mini-Cooper.
Cool Easter egg, in the arena in one of the cages, you see the original characters from the DnD cartoon.
I loved this movie. ^^ The only complaint I have, which is a minor one, is that I feel like Chris Pine always plays the same dude in different settings. Was still a good fit for the character.
Movie recommendation for you to react to: THE BOOK OF ELI (2010), an amazing film that features a great performance by the always charismatic Denzel Washington.
The Animal Girl is my favorite in this show. I love Animal shapeshifting. I am A Drud in my D&D game with my friends.
I’ve watched this a few times now with the wife and with friends and the last time watching it I noticed when they’re fighting at the end and holes jumps in you can hear her get stabbed.

Im an old, outdated, DM and player from the dawn of gaming, and I've lived through sword and sorcery movies and D&D wanna be movies that sucked for literally 50+ years now. This may not be on the level of LOTR...but for a movie with D&D in the title, this is the crowning achievement a lot of old and newer gamers have been waiting for...a grand slam...humor, good characters/actors, action, intrigue and special effects...all while keeping close to the source material, but not letting the source material cramp its style. I've I were rating as Siskel and Ebert, I'd have to grow an extra thumb and give it 3 thumbs up, but a 9-9.5 is very fair. It's flaws were very small and very few, and its strengths were many and were out in the lead. We've come a long way from the late 70s early 80s era of extra cheesy fantasy flics that could only be seen late nights on local TV when they needed a cheap way to fill time slots. I am content :-)
They're not necessarily idiots. The Barbarian uses Strength and the Paladin, Druid, and Sorcerer use Charisma. Intelligence is a dump stat.
Either CinemaWins or TVTropes pointed out to me that none of the characters was a class that used INT as a primary stat. I feel like that was an intentional choice on the filmmakers' part.

Fun fact: Michelle Rodriguez started D&D when she was in her teens and play with Vin Diesel and Vin Introduce D&D to the rest of the cast of fast and the furious. And we know when you have a Sneaky DM will Mess with you when you use Talk to the dead spell 😂
My favorite movie of 2023 this far!
If you want a really good fantasy movie that's under the radar, check out Warcraft based on the World of Warcraft game. It came out in 2016.
Big fans of WoW and have been playing since it launched so we've seen the movie, it's alright for the most part; anything with humans felts really weird but everything about the orcs was amazing. Truly a shame, it had a lot of potential!
This movie, in my opinion, is the best imagining of what happens in actual D&D gameplay. The successes, the failures, how characters and players have to be exact with the Dungeon Master.... It is MUCH better than the first D&D movie with Jeremy Irons.
for the real nerds like me.....one of the other groups in the arena is the party from the old D&D cartoon.
