  • Sherlock Holmes with a more action orientated spin is actually a pretty fun idea, loved how the movie balanced it out with the overall mystery going on throughout the story!

Perfect way to show Sherlock's brilliance. Him thinking out what he was going to do in slow motion, before we see it done in real time is beautifully done cinematography.

I would've preferred if he actually explained anything before the end though. They do a similar thing in the Sherlock show, where they don't explain a single thought Sherlock is having or plan he's making until the end and we're supposed to be blown away by his brilliance, but that's just not how it is in the novels. He's constantly teaching Watson, and we go through the steps with him.
How in the world are we supposed to get the ancient Egyptian cement recipe or the water activated poison or the fake rain spout soaking him in kerosene while his gun has a modified bullet in the chamber just from watching along? We don't even see the rain spout. Taking the viewer along for the mystery is something that mystery novels do well but they always get wrong in live action. You're supposed to see the elements, having the opportunity to put them together yourself but if you haven't, they reveal it and you go "how on Earth didn't I see it?"
Still a pretty good movie tbough, like the second one better.

I love how they portray Holmes, Watson and Lestrade in these movies, because it's far more book-accurate than most interpretations. Most have Watson & Lestrade looking like dullards to boost Holmes's own genius, but in the books, they were smart and far more hands-on and combat-oriented than most movies portray them as. Interesting enough, now that Law is done with Fantastic Beasts and RDJ is finished being Ironman (for now), you can expect the third Sherlock Holmes movie to surface soon. Both RDJ and Jude Law loved being in the roles, and somewhat eager to get started.

I like how they at least respected the source material with Holmes being an arrogant condescending chaotic genius and Watson as a solid dependable kind friend who takes care of him protecting him more often than not from his own recklessness.

    • @billbill6094
      @billbill6094 3 місяці тому +5

So they didn't respect the source material. Holmes holds his reason and his sense of morality above all else, self-admittingly, and Watson is incredibly lazy, self-admittingly. Nothing Holmes does should be impossible for Watson, especially in the latter books when Holmes reminds him he already taught him his methods, but it's his constant disinterest, distraction, and biases that keep him from solving cases.
Holmes only really gets careless once in Norbury, and he _does_ ask Watson to tell him if ever in the future he seems that careless again to remind him of how incredibly wrong he got that case, but besides that Holmes does the heavy lifting. This was more "how do we portray brilliance in 2 hours, and give him RDJ's personality?"

    • @ianjardine7324

@@billbill6094 just because a character says something doesn't mean it's true Holmes repeatedly takes risks with his drug use his experiments his life and the life of those around him his arrogance in believing he is smart enough to account for every possible variable in every scenario can't be ignored because he is proven right. Recklessness is not decided on whether you got away with taking the risk it's decided on how necessary the risk was in the first place. Your other points are valid but respecting the source material doesn't mean being rigidly bound by every detail I don't mind a little artistic license as long as they don't utterly disregard the foundation of the character. Hence my utter disgust with the final season of GOT.

Idk if you're watching these _only_ because it's a Sherlock Holmes story, but I would reccomend after you watch the second you watch other Guy Ritchie movies too. The modern ones like The Gentlemen and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. are amazing, and obviously his classics like Snatch and RockNRolla are classic for a good reason.
They underpowered Holmes in this movie really, while giving him a very Robert Downey Jr. personality. In the books, he is an extremely renowned boxer, and is known for almost inhuman strength. Also when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had to reverse his death infamously due to public pressure, he made him also a master of Baritsu, a mispelling of Bartitsu, a Victorian martial art of grappling and stick fighting.

Something that only occurred to me after I saw both of these movies and got more into the character of Sherlock Holmes (by reading the books and watching other things with the character) was something that was never explicitly said in this movie. I think Holmes was trying to make sure John didn't change his mind about Mary and continue his "addition" to adventure with Holmes. First there was his original meeting with Mary. After they left when Holmes insulted her, his food arrives just then, meaning he knew ahead of time that he would be eating alone and, from the focus on the watch, he even timed it. This means he fully intended to make them leave in some way right off the bat. Then, there's the fact that each of his methods to try to "convince John that he isn't suited for the quiet life with Mary" backfire to the point where John becomes more convinced to marry Mary. Sherlock might not exactly be a "people person", but even he would know that his plans were having the opposite effect, unless that was what he was looking for. Sherlock, in his own way, cares about John and wants him happy, but can't just come out and say it, so he would go about ensuring it in a roundabout way.

5:08 - Yes. Holmes has several less-than constructive habits when he gets bored. One of them is he uses his pistol to shoot the initials V. R. (Victoria Regina) into the wall of his apartment. He aims for the holes he's already shot.
6:18 - The truth: They've already met. Mary was Holmes' client in his and Watson's second major case, The Sign of the Four.
14:08 - Irene Adler. _THE_ Woman. A Scandal in Bohemia.
38:42 - It was an ongoing personal project of Holmes' to try to expand Watson's mind by teaching Watson his techniques. It's an interesting meta-cycle since Watson was the narrator of the stories and thus a stand-in for Arthur Conan-Doyle, who was the writer, and thus the one ACTUALLY coming up with these logical trains.

Actually, that fighting stile is less "movie" than what you can think. Some of those slaps are just fiction for the movie, but other movements and some of other slaps (for example those on the opponent's arms) are a part of Wing-Chu, a martial art that is part of Kung Fu, and Robert Downey Jr practiced it for a lot of years.

I've been a Sherlock Holmes fan since elementary school and grew up watching the Basil Rathbone shorts from the late 30's and early 40's. Over the years I've seen most of the great renditions, and Robert Downey did a solid job, no complaints. Both of his films are solid and I would recommend them to anyone who might be interested in the character of Sherlock Holmes.
If you guys find these entertaining, Benedict Cumberbatch "Sherlock" from the BBC is a solid watch, although it started way better than it ended. And "Elementary" from CBS ran for 7 seasons and starred Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock and Lucy Liu as Watson. It breaks many of the long standing tropes of the character, but in a good way, it's a TV series, so a huge investment of time is required for that one. Oh and I almost forgot one of the best films, "Young Sherlock Holmes", a very under appreciated gem.

@@hound3000 If I was going to rate any one version of S.H., Elementary would probably take my top spot, as you said, it fleshes out the character. Same went for Watson, as over the course of the show, she became a more well rounded with depth as well. And yeah, the show wasted many good opportunities in regards to many of the characters and story lines, which is a shame. While Elementary had it's good and bad, it was a long running series with hundreds of episodes over many years and that is often to be expected. The BBC show had a lot less to contend with over time, and when that show was good it was amazing, and when it was bad, it was a WTF!? moment for me. LOL

At 9:49. That's to be thing about Robert Downey Jr's performance as Sherlock. He's actually the first actor to get it truly "Right". The reason, he was sitting in the dark, the reason he was slapping the dude in a fighting pit with music so loud that you can barely think and the reason he was listening to the pocket watch, are all one and the same. He sees too much at all times. Input overload. So he does things to dull his senses when he's not actively working.

the boxing scene where Holmes slap fights his opponant is an actual form of martial arts that uses placed slaps mostly. RDJ has studied this form of fighting for years.

The part where Watson barges in his room and starts opening the shades - he says "This is for EYE SURGERY!" He is referring to cocaine, which was originally a topical anesthetic in liquid form - most commonly injected by fiends (usually medical professionals). THE KNICK was an amazing historical series - cut short - about a hospital in NY City in 1900. Clive Owen plays a surgeon who gets hooked on it. GREAT Show! Only 2 seasons 😫

To explain why he's slapping if someone hasn't already done it before, you're less likely to break something with a slap than you are with a punch.

I disagree about Holmes’ intentions while reading Mary. Holmes was trying to give Watson a reason to call off the engagement so he could have his bestie back. He was jelly.

i think the reason this saga never had a third movie is because the second entry was so goddam good, it elevate the bar so high that it was impossible to match... Once you watch the sequel, you'll get my point...

I loved these two movies. The way RDJ and Jude Law interact is phenomenal and the chemistry he has with Rachel McAdams is perfect. You'll love the second one as well.
Btw, the newer series with Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as Dr Watson is also really good albeit played differently than these movies.

just the other day, I had been working on coding a graphic system and spent most of the day hitting a roadblock.
when I finally had a breakthrough, I felt like Holmes kicking the crap out of that Irishman at the bar: just slowly walk out of there, leave the code on the table, grab the nearest booze, and chug it as I walk off screen.
    RDJ was perfect for this.

I'm a huge Sherlock Holmes buff, and it always bothered me that before this they portrayed him as this old man. But this was probably the proper ages of him and Watson. So, to me this was the best portrayal. AND, it never hurts to see Rachel McCadams in tight pants!
