Ok, OMG! This video is completely heartwarming for anyone who knows what unloading a suitcase coming from Africa is like. You guys have been completely spoiled by your dad. I don’t even know where to start 😂. First off, I’m currently using the exact yellow African bath sponge as your dad’s. Kareem looks super handsome in the thobe! Kenton turned Hausa quick 😂. Mariam looks sooooo beautiful in her boubou. I can’t wait to see you wearing your stuff. He even brought the leather cushions!! I know you’ll love having that in your home.
When he said “kina lafiya” to Mariam, I wanted her to say “lafiya lau” so bad. That would have made his day 😂. You can tell he’s so happy to see you, and it’s amazing that he apparently still holds your mom dear in his heart. Uff, too much to write. Habiba, thank you for sharing this with us. Can you tell I’m a little happy for you all. Bless you guys.

@SentimentalCrab, your comment is beautiful. The vlog and your comment warmed my heart and brought tears to my eyes. I know how precious daughters are to their dad's. I lost mine 15 years ago. I am a Nigerian too. Born in Jos but, from the South West. I can still speak Hausa, kadan kadan but, understand it to a certain degree. You're blessed, my sisters.

A Nigerian man will not tell their kids they love them. But when they buy something for you no matter how inexpensive such is; they're showing their love for you.
Just like my dad he will never say he loves you but he will do everything you ask of him... Miss my dad of blessed memory

You are such a good person for welcoming your father back into your life. It is also obvious that your father is a good person, flawed and trying to make amends. What I found interesting is that your father was younger when you left than you are now. It is true that in some parts of Northern Nigeria (in the past), firstborns did not usually have a relationship with their mothers. I wonder what effects that had on subsequent emotional relationships of the firstborn. I can understand your mother's hurt.

Quite impressive, I couldn't stop smiling all through while watching this video. As a filmmaker, we have a lot in common, I felt really emotionally connected. The Christmas card you sent to your dad was signed on my birthday, when I turned 18 (2 years older than you, I believe) and the same year I finished my secondary school. I am an Igbo and a christian, who grew up among Hausas in Cameroon and I speak fluent Hausa. I really have a huge amount of respect to your dad, seeing him showing you that well preserved Christmas card, as a Northern Nigerian muslim, wow! Respect! Thats how we should all see and treat religion. I hope he enjoyed his visit. Wish him well for me and thank you and your lovely family for sharing this fantastic video. Looking forward to see Miriam's directed movie or documentary in the near feature stay blessed.

Watching this made me emotional. My Dad also had a rich past and was very kind with gifts. Also had similar mannerisms with your Dad but sadly he passed last year at 76yrs. Around this age, all they have to give is love and just want to see you happy. My Dad insisted on paying the first proper fees of my kids and would often gift my siblings large cash sums and we had no choice but to accept them to avoid a quarrel. I hardly ever comment on UA-cam videos but was moved to do so. Shalom Sister and thanks for sharing your experience.

I am from southern Nigeria, a Yoruba...but I must say that hausas are down-to-earth humans. They are simple, generous and straightforward people... Baba(your dad) is a good example.

I really love this. Wow, he spent a lot of money shopping for you guys. That's our fathers' way of making it up to us. I schooled in the North, so I understand your culture well. I left my dad too in similar circumstances and didn't see him for over 20 years before he passed. I didn't speak to him for many years, but we eventually reconnected and he tried hard to repair our relationship, even begged me to come home to visit, but I couldn't forget the hurt and trauma he caused. I was too far gone to care that people evolve. I don't blame your mom or dad for their decisions. One was a slave to tradition and one was a slave to emotion. God give us the wisdom to not be bound by either and to make right decision at the right time. God bless you and your family!

  • @CookieRoux

I’ve honestly watched these videos multiple times now... don’t know why I just feel so connected to this story.. as I am a Hausa girl who was born and raised in England, I know exactly what the cultural and religious differences are. And for those reasons, along with observing how very Hausa ur dad is... I am just drawn to this story! It is wonderful that we have UA-cam today to see these things, as even with Hausa tradition, this is very much out of the norm to publish your private personal life to the world. I however am so here for it and I wish you all happiness! Anyway well done Habiba. And I’ll just say this about your father... unfortunately as Hausa’s sometimes we are victims of our environment and your dad was no exception. I also struggle with this sometimes and I can very much relate to him/you. Sometimes it can feel like an identity crisis cuz of all the cultural contrasts! He definitely loves you guys so much. His effort did not go unnoticed. Like he sat on the table, chatting to y’all at dinner, bought you so many gifts! He did the classic traditional Hausa thing of giving his grandchildren money. My grandparents always did this to me. It’s our culture, and no matter how small the amount I was taught it’s actually considered rude not to accept the money. Your dad definitely just needed to be less traditional, and more liberal and he would have absolutely had a happy life with your mum. Unfortunately in northern Nigeria, sometimes we don’t even have a choice and your dad probably didn’t have the option to come with you guys. I can imagine living in sokoto for a British Jamaican can’t have been easy at all, and I definitely understand what your mum may have endured. She wouldn’t have had any freedom and it would have been so stifling for her. In the 21st century now, things have improved and it is less so. These videos did really warm my heart however and I hope you visit Nigeria one day with your children. They will be incredibly welcome by everyone, and it will also be an eye opening experience for them, something that will make them much more rounded adults! Going to Nigeria and understanding the differences etc had shaped me to be who I am today, and I must say I am proud of who I am and proud to be both Hausa and western! Thank you for sharing your life with us. Mun Gode, Allah ya muku albarka. 😇

Also, Kenton is a great man!! I loooove your multiculturalism and you are the epitome of a globalised world! Hausa mixed with Jamaican and Asian and white? Amazing, rare and beautiful cocktail! Mariam is gorgeous I like her more and more every time I watch your videos. She’s a classic 16 year old lol
