Melodically , harmonically and lyrically not in the same stratosphere. PS I do like the Stones as well.

It adds a very human element to their music which is lacking in today's recordings. They were 4 untrained musicians who figured it out on their own. I have an old Musician magazine from the 80s where Paul is quoted as saying, "Our harmony wasn't perfect, just better than anyone else's."
The boys were definitely on pitch, especially McCartney's lead vocal. The background vocals are not perfect ONLY in one small spot but very good overall.
This is amazing, showing just how the Beatles changed in only a couple years. Compare this vocal-only track to the one of Because. Because is utter perfection, where there are a number of places where the imperfections are much more evident. You can hear someone clear his throat here. You can hear one of them mumble out the words practicing for the next harmony line. It's so enlightening and I just want to thank the poster for sharing.

@@Rippd_Bagel Always is a strong word, i dont think so. There were some limited effects then in the 60´s like tape echo, reverb chambers, not much more. The Beatles used a leslie (rotating spekaer) effect on Tomorrow never knows when Lennon wanted to sound like a monk on a mountain, but they had to modify the leslie since it is a Hammond organ effect which was probably not popular at all with the EMI, you could do flangeing effects by using two tape recorders with the same material and slowing down one by touching the flange of the tape reel. If you go back to the beginning of the days of audio recording i dont think there were any effects at all really.
Those EMI microphones were the best in the world !! People talk about 4 track this , mono that , etc . The Beatles were so very fortunate to have had the use of these mics, and the whole set up at EMI and I can’t think of a more deserving band to use them . Some of these EMI mics have sold for over a million dollars in the past years . Not because the Beatles used them , because they’re that good !

The Beatles walked into musical heaven when they signed with EMI ...

Which kind of piqued my interest in that. I agree that the Neumann U47 and U48 mics the Beatles used are amazing instruments. EMI engineers were trained and the equipment was always in optimum working condition. The old Neumann's are highly-prized today but selling for "over a million dollars" is a stretch, I believe. Here's a U47 currently on Ebay: eBay item number: 323868400943

Don't think it's a false start though. Singers often do this silently to make sure they're on the right pitch and are gonna hit the note. Like golf players practicing before they hit the ball.

Beach Boys setup was just as good as Pet Sounds proves. And USA had 8 track a couple of years before the UK did.
