Moving my Offgrid Homestead Pt. 1

  • We are moving all of the buildings I have at my offgrid homestead to a new location! I used a tractor and a pipe trailer and pulled the buildings on with my truck before driving them to the new location.
    Its exciting to say the least, and I had to be very careful not to wreck my buildings! Moving these buildings starts a new chapter for Traplines and Inlines and I cant even tell you how excited I am!
    Welcome to Traplines and Inlines, this channel focuses on my dog and I on our remote Off the Grid Homestead in Northern Canada. I make videos on off grid homesteading and building, trapping, chickens, mechanical projects, and hunting and fishing.
    I went offgrid and started building my cabin over two years ago, while I was still in highschool. Since then I have built many things at the homestead and have had the priviledge of learning many things along the way.
    The homestead is designed to be relatively low maintenance and with extremely minimal expenses. All of my electricity comes from solar power, heat from woodstoves, and I haul all my water so I dont have any monthly costs associated with my homestead.
    I love the lifestyle, especially because it gives me the absolute freedom to do whatever I please. I plan on continuing to tackle awesome projects and work at building and fixing many more things, and I cant wait to share them with you on the channel.
    Thanks for watching!

    Hey bud for the cabin, Jack it up high enough on cribbing to back your trailer underneath so that you don't have o let it tip like the sheds did on the tilt deck. Then reverse the process to set it back down on the ground. Looks like you have plenty of logs there to use for cribbing.👍

      I agree here on jacking it up. My dad and I moved a shed this way and it worked perfect. it is 10x20 so we put on the trailer the long way so it would not tilt forward or backward. I say after you lift it back up from the front porch. in other words let the porch be towards the front end of the trailer the long ways. good luck

      I would remove the frame from wheel chassis if possible, lift the cabin drop her down on the frame or use skids and pull it with a dozer(not sure if that tractor can pull it or not, low gear 10hours of travelling time lol.......I think that trailer is a no no, can you imagine blowing a tire, and that narrow wheel base, ...or get someone with some experience to come out and have a look...

    The cabin I would not try to pull it on or off. I would jack it up and stack it on cribbing to get the trailer under it. Ring lags to tie it down vs over the top. Best of luck however you go about it. Worst case you end up sleeping in the trapping shed for a bit. TY for the video

    I’d say to start with 20 ton bottle jacks. Slowly lift the cabin and crib it with fresh solid Timbers. I’d say 12x12” Timbers at least. Lift it high enough so a trailer can be back under it. Once it’s on the trailer chains and chain binders will be needed to help the building stay on the trailer. Straps won’t be strong enough. You will need to chain the building from the start of the second floor in order to keep it from tipping. To do this you’ll need to get heavy duty eyelets that pass through the cabins frame inside through a steel plate and then nut and bolt it so it can’t pull through the building. This will give you solid connections to hook your chains too. Make sure you chain both sides of the cabin to the trailer. After that it should be good to go. I’ve moved a few buildings and getting the equipment is the hardest part. Go really slow. Think everything through carefully. Don’t rush or it will go wrong I promise. Good luck. Find a crane company in your area and those guys can tell you all you need to know. Might even help you get some gear. 👍👍

      shiela and monkey you’ve watched too many dramatic TV recreations. That kinda stuff doesn’t just turn into a bob sled on its own. On ice maybe but not rock and clay. Even the wood on the steel trailer has enough friction it won’t just slide off. I moved a 12x20 shed on my own on similar ground and with a side slope. He’s doing overkill already. Breaking straps tells me there is a lot of friction there.

    I think a few pipes run 90 to your trailer pipes (not attached) could be used as rollers to help the cabin glide up on her. If you are afraid that she is going backwards and over, run a few brace straps to the front and tighten as you winch her up. A winch on each corner might be another way. Or, the best way, jack her up, crib it, and then back the trailer under it.

    Awesome video buddy!! I was very surprised to see you so quickly start to move your home stead!! Now for the last piece that you need to move and worried about being so tipsy!!! I think I would put some big logs under it for skids and pull it with the tractor!!! Now for going down a hill for the ones that think it will run into the tractor well they are way wrong for sure!!! The weight of the building is going to stop it when the tractor stops for sure!!! Now if worried that the big logs that you put under it will be all wore down before getting to the spot?? Well I’m not exactly sure how far you was actually having to move them??? A mile or two or is it more like 50 to a 100 miles??? That is definitely a big difference and would definitely move it with the extra big logs under it up to maybe 5 miles at the most but anything more than that I would figure out a way to lift the building in place up high enough to back the trailer under with out tilting the trailer!! And then just reverse the proses to get it off of the trailer trying to keep it as flat as possible the intire time!!! I’ve moved some pretty good size buildings in my younger days!!! But the biggest was a 30’x24’ garage and that didn’t have a bottom on it like all the ones that you are moving!!! I’d definitely like to see how you plan on moving it or maybe you just plan on making the chicken shed the work shop and turn the work shop into your living quarters?? I mean heck the shop has a wood burner in it already!! I no that you will figure out something because you have a mind set just like I do for sure and that is just make it happen and if something doesn’t work well it can definitely be fixed up!!!! Awesome video buddy and remember keep up all the hard work buddy!!!

    Okay since you asked for advise, here is what I whould do...
    You'll have to jackup the cabin and back the trailer under the cabin. I watched you build that cabin, it will stand up to the move without any cross bracing. I like how you braced the wood stove and pipe in the shop you moved...smart. I would do that again.
    You'll need to get a trailer WITHOUT a tilt bed. You're already worried about the thing being top heavy and you will not be able to skid that cabin anywho. We used an old flatbed that is stripped right down to just the metal frame and then use 4x4's or railroad ties or what ever it takes to block it up just enough to clear the tires. These are bolted securely to the frame. Then when you get the cabin set on the trailer you can use lag bolts or allthread to secure the cabin runners to those blocks. Everytime we have moved a building we secure the runners to the frame of the trailer and we also use straps to secure it just like you did for your two smaller buildings.
    Good luck I hope you are able to get it moved. If not you could always just build a new small cabin at your new work site.

    I think it will move fine and if you strap it down it shouldn't leave the trailer my biggest concern would be the trailer flipping on its side. I would definitely get a spotter and I would consider putting temporary braces inside like they do with modular homes. I'm not sure what you're situation is with the land, if its just access having a camp away from your home even if it is right down the road is a nice escape.

    Put (ballast) weight, on the cabin floor when moving it. It will be a lot of extra weight but it would lower the center of gravity.

    One in the Bush is better than Pieces in the field. Leave the cabin in the bush you'll have a remote trapping base. Put a cot in the shop or chicken house in case you want to spend the night on site.

Way to move your buildings, that tractor could pull a house down..lol The moose calf was in a bad way, until you came along, thank you for spotting it and helping. The cabin move, slow and steady, wrap the porch with straps, you'll be able to do it. Really enjoy watching you, your a hard working young man.

    You could probably brace the top of the cabin with some long logs bud, like from just under the roof/cantilever to the corners of the trailer. Might keep it from tipping. Also cut some holes in the floor and run some straps from the axle or frame to the roof beam. The distance between the beam and axle/frame would have to get longer if the cabin tips so strap the shit out of her. Love your content bud. I appreciate you. I can't wait to see the update. Happy Halloween 🎃

    I agree it would be very convenient to have the cabin right there to get shit done. However once youre done with the log home if you are planning to live in it I dont see a reason for the old cabin at that site unless you already have another use in mind. It might be simpler to commute to the work and leave the old cabin at the old site in case you want a night in the bush here and there.

    • @davidberblinger8277

      Also if you move the cabin and it tips or gets damaged youre going to be forced into repairing it first, and that will delay you from your project further.

    Great videos. It’s amazing what we can do by ourselves when we have too. One tool that has been one of my greatest assets in the bush is a Lewis chain saw winch. I have moved some very large loads by myself. 4000lbs straight pull and add one block and it’s 8000. You know the math. There are other ones but the Lewis is the real deal. Made in Canada. If we were closer I’d let ya borrow mine. Good luck with the new view.

    I would worry about the loft collapsing on the cabin. Also maybe consider taking the chimney off for transportation

  • @jameswallace5059
    @jameswallace5059 Рік тому +2

    Yes, the tilting feature of that transporter is not so much a feature but a problem for moving your cabin. Move it like professional movers move most buildings. Jack up the corners at strategic points a few inches at a time and support it -- just keep going around and around adding more supporting boards at each point until the whole thing -- including the porch -- is higher than the untilted flatbed, then just drive under it and lower it to the flatbed. Also, this eliminates winching it into position. Then drive ridiculously slowly on a non-agressive path to its new home. Reverse procedure and you're done. Drink a beer.

    • @jameswallace5059
      @jameswallace5059 Рік тому

      Also be sure the center of the cabin's mass is directly over the wheels so the trailer doesn't tip. Very slow moving is key and no large potholes!

    @billyb.9878 Рік тому

    You know I've watched me cousin move and lift houses. He always goes in with a shit load of 2 bys. 2x6 2x10 and cross braces everything. In your case probably on the outside . Front, back & both sides. Top to bottom. You got to stop it from shifting when it's being moved. And I don't know if your current rig is heavy duty enough. But you got to brace it for sure. Good luck.

  • @thomasjones613
    @thomasjones613 Рік тому

    I don't think you're going to have much luck moving your cabin with the tilting trailer like you moved your other two buildings with. Have you ever watched vides's here from a guy called, "Shed Repo"? He puts a set of small/low dollies under the buildings and then moves them. You might get some ideas from watching his videos. Good luck!

    Up to a hundred years ago, a lot of building moving around here was done during with winter. Log skids pulled by horse teams. They moved medium barns many miles. I think they laid down sets of logs, pulled to the next set, stopped, moved a set, repeat. That's the only way I'd even think about it, with the tractor and with extra bodies, not solo.

    I'd use some 4x4's., Or 6x6's to slide that cabin onto your trailer with. For leveling purposes mainly To help with that part of stability.& Levelness & sturdiness all in one. Notch them out to fit underneath those other runners/ for joists studs by screwing in lag bolts.,or use some barn steeples. As in really long big barn nails for joining them together with. Myself I'd cut those steeples down to 5/8 length size for simplify everything on it all man A. Seriously it'll help ya out more in the long run to more. Plus you'll already be setup if you decide to relocate those buildings in different spots again to then where their at now for keeps sake as well to. I'd add on some srap buckles welded fully rings to connect your pull straps onto for loading your cabin on the trailer with.& For tying down purposes also just saying man. It'll add extremely extra security to as well. You'll half to run straps over the top of t the at cabin both directions to. So that means puts buckles on both directions to.

    Then use some chains connected to hook buckle rings straps.& Buckles from side to side both ways. More time involved yes. I'd x ❌ cross the ones going on last over the other ones for triple support is all. You know what I mean by that part of it run four one way.& Four the other way.& Then two/2 ❌ cross ways from corner to corner left to right.& Right to left. Ratchet straps & buckles. I'd pick up some more along with some logging chain.& Ring nose buckles like for farm equipment usage style for that purpose.& Those reasons alone to. Cause you can make some of your money back To. Also by hauling other people's stuff to with them as well to. Later on down the road if need be to. For A side hustle to right man. Just saying brother man it's where it's at now days anymore. Cause you never know what you might need.,or when you'll end up needing it either. It's always better to be prepared than not in life for sure no matter what it is especially now days even more so with everything that's been going on.
