I actually went to this transfer while the LDS church and so if it was beautiful amazing I loved it but when I find out that in the heavens you can basically become like God and have your own planet that’s where it kind of just went downhill from there.

It would be nice to hear you and Joy talk about the role of women in the Church. This is something on which a lot of denominations, including the LDS Church, do not agree. Some churches ordain women (very few (such as Episcopals) in very high roles), some allow them to be leaders in a separate part of the Church, and few allow them to only be lay members of the Church.

Maybe speak about evangelists who do have temples and their beliefs about them? I've seen a baptist temple before... on my way to Virginia. I think it was in Kentucky. I was so surprised! I had previously joked years before with some of my children while traveling once when passing by one of our temples that had some weathervanes (Logan) that looked like crosses on the top of the temple instead of the statue of the Angel Moroni. I asked them to guess what that building was. They had guessed it was a Baptist temple 😆 I found this very funny since my baptist friends in high school had taken me to their church where such things in my church were made to seem very evil, but I had a feeling at that time it was fear and superstition. So, I'm very interested in why there was a Baptist temple, if you have any knowledge of this. Thank You!

It's very interesting listening to Jeff and Joy try to make a distinction between faith and works. They are correct that simply going through the motions does not generate a deep and personal relationship with Christ. He taught that fasting in sack cloth and ashes availed nothing because it was done for the approval of men, not God. He also taught that placing a gift on the alter, if done grudgingly, brings no reward. So, the motivation for doing good works is critical.
Yet, neither does simply declaring that you love Christ without "going through the motions" generate the desired relationship with Christ. He taught that those who love Him would keep His commandments. So, while there may be a theoretical distinction between faith and works, the the two don't really exist without the other. True works are a product of our love of and faith in Him.
Consider the marital relationship. If both spouses are simply going through the motions, they won't develop the deep and abiding love that sustains a marriage. On the other hand, if the spouses frequently proclaim their love for each other without doing all the small things that are necessary for a marriage to function, the marriage is apt to fall apart. It's important to say nice things to each other, but it's also important to do nice things -- such as really listening to what the other is saying -- for each other. In my experience, a healthy marriage is built on a foundation of both love and works (motivated by that love). I think that's true with our relationship with Christ.

My wife and I had a similar discussion to this and we also talked about how her and I sometimes are going thru the motions in our own relationship and have felt distant- even as we are raising our kids and coexisting amicably together- yet we feel a disconnect. All the things we are doing together are important- but sometimes our relationship is still weak. Likewise- if we obsessed over one another and ignored our other parental demands our house and family would be in ruins.

God looks upon the heart so he takes that into consideration in the eternities. Jesus paid the price for sin for those with a broken heart and contrite spirit. His death made it possible for us to live again. In other words he broke the bands of death but where we live in the eternities is based on how we conducted our lives /- our faith and testimony a

This is one of my favorite videos so far. We do believe we are temples, and can invite the presence of the Holy Spirit anytime and anywhere. The physical temple is sacred because of the ordinance work that we do there, but if we are living in a way that is conducive to the spirit, we can find rest in our daily walk with God no matter where we are. I find rest in my daily personal worship.

There are several things I wish I could chime in on but to keep it brief, when you were discussing “progression” and “becoming” - you seemed to focus on EARNING a kingdom, where we don’t necessarily view it that way. Amen! It's interesting, we believe in one sense that the evangelicals are right. By believing in Christ and surrendering to him they find rest and will live with him for eternity.
But we also believe that Christ invited us to receive more than just rest, he invites us to receive everything he has - including his character, his likeness, all of him. We believe everything Pastor Jeff is saying and then that Christ is offering us more than that if we want it. And we don't earn any of it, we receive it from Him.

Basically we really believe the same about our relationship with Christ. It just comes down to semantics. The born again experience is very real for Latterday Saints who seek it. It certainly was for me at age 18, when I surrendered my heart to Jesus and He made me New! Real, life changing and in my adult life, I am learning to rely on this relationship and the power of the atonement to pull me through every challenge. I bet our experiences are very similar, because Jesus Lives and loves us all. He answers the call to find Him, readily and eagerly. He wants us to learn to trust Him, have faith in Him and come back home.

For example although you disagree with the notion that our purpose is to grow and progress, I agree with you that our purpose is to surrender more to the Lord. That subsequently leads to progression. To Joy's question about people who couldn't go to the Temple: about 99% of what we do in Temples today is the ordinance work for those who couldn't in their life. So in a way Temples are mostly for non Latter day Saints. Also, for those members where a temple is still too far away (getting to be less of an issue), these members can still have a temple recommend, and their willingness and desire is what God cares about. Those saints, like people outside of the church, or who never had a chance in this life to accept the gospel, will have a chance to accept the ordinances done for them by proxy after they pass away.
There are something like 150 temples in operation and another 150 either announced or under construction since 2018 - so temples are becoming more and more available.

@gtf5392 Agreed. Christians believe in the Christ of the Bible, an uncreated being who always existed with God the Father from all eternity. He took on human flesh 2,000 years ago. John 1:1-14.
The Christ of the Bible claimed to be God. Christ was crucified because he claimed to be God. It was blasphemy and punishable by death.
      Merry Christmas! 🎄
      Matthew 1:23
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
      O Come, O Come Emmanuel
Joy to the World, the Lord has Come.
      The word 'Lord' means God.
Psalm 100:3 Know ye that the Lord he is God.
Away in a manger... the little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head...
Angels From the Realms of Glory.... God with us is now residing....
The Christ of the Bible offers forgiveness of sins, salvation, eternal life, and exaltation for free if you are interested. That is how much Christ loves you! ❤️

Pastor Jeff, you’re really getting our beliefs. In the opening clip, I was going to correct that we wouldn’t see it as someone becoming LDS. You said everything I was going to try to say in response to that but better. 😂 I was nodding along with so much of what you and Joy said. We very much do see our relationship with Christ and conversion being even more important than our actions. As Joy eloquently explained, we can be “doing” all the things at least publicly and not really have a relationship with Christ. We can also do all the “right things” publicly and do horrendous things privately. We do know that works alone won’t save us. We very much believe it’s the desires of our hearts (which manifest in our actions, especially when no one is watching) that we’ll be judged by and not just if we checked off all the “right” boxes while we were living. We also know we’re human and even if our hearts are willing, we will sometimes fall short. So we’re VERY grateful for Christ’s Grace. Without Him and His atoning sacrifice, none of us could be saved and return to live forever in His and our Heavenly Parents’ presence. It wouldn’t matter what ordinances we received if Christ had not fulfilled the demands of justice.

Many of the thoughts I had while watching this episode have already been addressed in the comments, so I won't repeat those, but one thing that I have thought, many times during this episode and over many of the past episodes, is that you seem to be working really hard to point out differences, but you are missing out on the similarities and the good fruit of what you are reading and observing. But, what you are doing hard and you are so by an awesome job! Thanks

My tribe is Navajo. Growing up in Idaho. I have wondered how we end up living in Idaho. I asked a lot of questions. Come to find out that my father and end of World War II. He came back home from the war and decided to raised us kids in Idaho and working for the farmers. Have income coming in. My mom said she was a Catholic. Living in Idaho my parents noticed that there were a lot of LDS church members. They really helped out a lot and very willing to help. Very kind and loving in any way. My family felt very welcome within the community. Somewhere along the way my family got converted. I really loved it when almost all my family members went to church every Sunday. I miss those days. In my high school days in end up going to church all by myself. I learned a lot being active in church. I felt a lot of good spirits. Whatever they teach. Like fasting, paying my tithing and doing Just Serve. I feel so blessed. There’s a lot I still do not understand. But yes it makes a lot of sense on what they teach. Also my father was a very wise teacher. He has this saying. “Life is not a game” when something makes sense. Before I did not understand what he meant.

It has always surprised me why people battle between faith and works. Group A throws out 5 scriptures to defend the need for works, and Group B responds with their own 5 scriptures to show how it is the grace of Jesus saves us... But the fact that there are 2 points of view, with scriptures backing up both, just proves that we need both! It's not one of the other, true grace doesn't exist without obedience, and obedience is never sufficient because we are imperfect.
Even if we did ALL we are commanded to do, we need Christ's grace to save us (so we truly can't boast) but God's grace can't apply without our obedience to Him. We need both. It's one thing.

Jeff, your timing of starting this channel has been PERFECT for me. My husband, son and I just had this exact discussion last night… but you and Joy have articulated it much better.
Emily’s teaching is a much better representation of our true gospel doctrine. The LDS church has spent decades focusing on WAYS to walk the path with Christ (rules), but they’ve missed the WHY we walk the path.
Emily is “next generation” LDS - she has spent years trying to help her LDS friends understand that we’ve missed discussing and understanding GRACE because we were focusing lessons on Sabbath practices, modesty, temple attendance, word of wisdom rules, etc.
She is one of the most important voices for the LDS church right now.
I know her personally, she moved into my neighborhood 20 years ago. She is still as sincere and genuine as the day I met her. She is the voice I’d point new investigators to.
    Thank you for this video.

She is great and I appreciate hearing her perspective, particularly when she referenced 1 Samuel 16:7, "...for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart." There have been many times where I have done outward things to honor the Lord, and introspectively looked inward and realized I need to repent and align my will closer to Him. I really appreciate that comment. Thanks for the interest and respect that you show to the Latter-day Saint community! We have that same appreciation and respect for you. An analogy came to mind: The covenant path is like a marriage. It starts with a "contract” but that doesn't guarantee a strong marriage relationship. You have to "work" on it. On the flip side, a couple can cohabitate without a marriage contract and have a great relationship but their union would not be officially recognized and the things they own and the children they bring into the world would be on a more unstable family foundation.

@@alumniadri8716 I completely agree that Christ is the "sure foundation" and a family built on him has the most stable foundation possible. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints myself I appreciate what you are doing with this channel. We do get a lot of misunderstanding about how we believe and I am thankful you are looking at it with an open mind and not looking for fault. I just wanted to touch on Temples a bit here. Temples to Latter-Day Saints is a place of refuge, a place where we make eternal covenants and learn and grow closer to our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, a place where we can escape the world feel peace, feel closer to God, and have a little taste of what heaven is like. While we do believe our bodies are temples and the spirit of God can reside in us, the temple provides a place where maybe for a moment we can separate ourselves from the world and focus on God without the distractions of the world and help recharge our spiritual batteries so that we can go out in the world and have the strength to face whatever the world has to throw at us.

24:50 I think Joy has already said something like this, but in my experience, practice does matter to bring the Spirit into our lives. As someone said in the comments, I’ve been able to feel God’s love for me even when I’m struggling or not going through all the religious motions as much. I know God is always trying to reach out to His children, no matter what they’re doing and that He loves us all unconditionally. That said, when I’m not actively seeking a relationship with God through prayer, hearing His words in scripture or through His prophets, attending church, attending the temple, etc. it is harder for me to feel connected to Him and it is easier for me to get distracted by worldly things. I feel the Spirit in my daily life more when I actively draw near to God, and I feel His presence and the presence of loved ones on the other side of the veil most in His holy temples. They are very special places and a major source for spiritual strength.

I wish I could share in a few short words how it was and is my time in the temple that brings me the greatest sense of comfort, peace and hope after a recent tragedy. When my trauma was so deep I could not speak to anyone, I could go to the temple and commune with God.
I know I am worthy of Gods love as I am, I strive to be worthy and live in such a way that bearing and serving in the name of Jesus that my life and heart are just examples of a disciple of Christ. The “legalities” have truly become sacred and humbling reminders that I am a daughter of God.
I don’t serve to earn my position in Heaven, I serve so that when others that are tuned out of religion do meet Christ, His love feels familiar because they felt a tiny speck of it from me. At 25-ish minutes in when Joy is discussing the concept of works vs heart, I think she’s touched on something that does plague some populations of the church. On the one hand we are taught that good produces good, basically if your heart is in a good place you will do good things. On the other hand, there are some people even in the church who either feel obligated or have a need to be recognized as doing good works, where their head is more into it than their heart. This is a very frustrating element of human nature and it is important that we do question our own intentions to some degree.
I think that’s a very insightful comment. Great to see you both in the video! Thank you both for sharing your personal spiritual perspectives with us!

You guys are so wonderful. Thanks for another amazing video. The nuanced view of works is tied to obedience. We are given the opportunity to do work with Jesus if we are willing to follow Him. That is why there are so many allusions to yokes and gathering and burdens. We are allowed to join Him in His work to help His children. If we choose not to follow Him that will condemn us, but the works themselves do not save us. The Covenants that we make help bind us closer to Him. We can make and break the Covenants, like Israel did, and walk away and we are actually worse off. Obedience is the key. We cannot be forced into doing good works because compulsion does not exalt. We are asked to choose to follow His will and give up our will. This inevitably leads to us doing good works out of love and Obedience to Him.

One thing that stood out to me is the discussion of progression and ascension being a top priority, versus having a relationship with Christ to help us be in the presence of God again…I would say the priorities are the same. We desire to ascend because we believe in order to be in the presence of God we must be clean, through a relationship with Christ. We desire to be with God more than anything else, and so we must be like Him to achieve that goal. It’s not about attaining the topmost kingdom. Conditions spoken of in the LDS church are about bringing yourself into proximity to God- coming unto Him and desiring to be near Him. He will not force us to choose His way or be close to Him, and we can not receive the blessings He wants to give us if we are far from His light. Just like we can not receive the warmth of the sun if we stay in the shadows, we can not receive the blessings of God unless we put ourselves in the right place. His promise and blessings are sure, but He cannot abide the smallest amout of sin in His kingdom (or He would cease to be God and it would cease to be Heaven) and He will not force us to live in His way.

Joy is super sweet. We most definitely believe that our bodies are temples. There's an old primary song that says that very thing. It is a temple so that the Spirit of God can dwell in us, and also in the sense that we are dual in nature: we have both a physical body (temple) and a spiritual body that dwells in our physical body. When we die these are temporarily separated. But it stands to reason that if we continue to exist, we will continue to learn and grow. Our minds don't simply shut down and we become part of a mindless blob. What purpose would that be for our Heavenly Father to create offspring to become nothing? "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together." (Romans 8:16-17) I testify that all are invited to the holy temple. I also testify that many sacred experiences have taken place in the temples that have verified that this holy work continues in the next life, and all are not lost and forgotten. "...and he (the Lord) inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile." (2 Nephi 26:33)

Your cute pastor Jeff in your efforts to distinguish between grace and works with this talk. Sister Freeman would say that our relationship is the most important thing, and we strive to have that relationship through faith and obedience on the covenant path and then you would say, but we believe that it is different because, we believe that our relationship with Christ is the most important thing and that our works come about because of our faith and obedience to him.

The garment, when worn as instructed, is a shield, and protection for the individual. Wearing the holy garment is an outward expression of an inner-committment to follow Jesus Christ and remind us of the Covenants made in the Holy Temple of God. It's is an honor and privilege to wear them.

Hello Jeff. Was impressed to talk about how Christ teaches us about the bounty of life, that He wants us to live more abundantly, not with worldly riches, but in the abundance of His Spirit and the endowment of His spiritual gifts. We are enriched and blessed when we do as He asks, not from a blessing that is a "reward" for having obeyed Him, but as a blessing that he has enriched us with His spirit and we have learned the concept He would have us know. As we are taught by His Spirit, we develop a fuller and greater relationship with Him.

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS. Many other faiths say everything is by grace. We are saved by grace. BUT there is a scripture that says"faith without works is dead". If you believe, works are involvepd...we have to serve the way Christ served after all, he is our example. Service is empowering. It is connected to our belief that we need to sacrifice in order to understand our Savior's sacrifice and say to him 'I want to be like you and follow in your steps.' 😊 Love watching your journey!

Your wife is a great addition and I especially appreciate her bringing up the HEART. It's a scripture I quote often, and is key to working out your salvation in this life and the one to come. So wherever you fall on the covenant path; be it non-religious, having accepted Jesus Christ by being born again, or entered into additional covenants for exaltation, it's a personal journey that God will judge based on our hearts knowing full well our intentions. You can't cheat and lie your way through the pearly gates, but God is faithful and will allow you opportunity after opportunity after opportunity to demonstrate your commitment and love to Him, and if we fall and have the desire to get back up he'll walk with us to return to His presence. But even after all that, the bridegroom will come and if we've wasted all the opportunities because our heart was focused on the things of the world, eventually we lose our reward…

Pastor Jeff, great job on describing our understanding of the plan of salvation. Your knowledge of our gospel view is getting better. One of my favorite aspects of the gospel of Jesus Christ from our view is the fact that nearly everyone that has lived on this earth will receive some sort of exaltation from the Lord. I feel this shows how merciful and powerful the lord is. I would love to see you talk more about your view compared to ours on the Atonement. Can’t wait for your next video. My name is Jordan Robert, I met you briefly when on campus at BYU in late spring. I introduced myself as a convert, philosophy major, and prior Jehovah's Witness. Jeff, I know the work you're doing is essential, both for us as members of The Church of Jesus Christ, and Christians everywhere, but I also understand your mission as preparing the world for the second coming. If I can be involved with your work in any capacity, or engage in good faith please allow me that blessing and that opportunity. I will continue to engage with your channel because of the essential doctrines you help me clarify like grace, and better understand that the restoration is ongoing and that all Christians, like you, help that restoration move forward by bringing clarity to gospel principles and doctrines the church needs. Thank you for all that you do in building Zion and preaching Christ. Take care.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I have appreciated and enjoyed your approached to the differences between our personal and doctrinal beliefs. I would like to correct one idea, it does not matter what we do we will not be saved without the grace offered to us by Jesus Christ. I say offered as Christ does not force his grace unto us. We are not saved by works as we all fall short. No matter how many boxes we check off without a true and honest relationship with Christ why would he extend his grace?

    @cameronreed1411 8 місяців тому +4

President Nelson has said beautifully that "In God’s eternal plan, salvation is an individual matter; exaltation (the fulness of salvation) is a family matter."
I would submit that LDS theology is a bit more nuanced in terms of how we talk about "salvation". We tend to have 3 different things in mind when speaking about salvation. Firstly, we believe Christ brings salvation from physical death by means of universal resurrection. There is nothing anyone can do to change this, no matter how good or evil they have been in life, all will be resurrected. As in Adam all die, so in Christ shall all be made alive (1 Corinthians 15:22). Plain and simple. But that's just one way in which we speak of salvation, and it is independent of one's personal works or actions. In this aspect of salvation we would agree that Christ has done all the work and by His merits we are saved.
Beyond this, one must be baptized by proper priesthood authority in order to pass the gate to the Celestial Kingdom which kingdom is in the presence of God. The Celestial Kingdom is the name we use for what most Christians would consider Heaven. This is the second way in which LDS talk of "salvation". Namely, being saved in the Celestial Kingdom and thereby returning to the presence of God. (John 3:5).
The third way in which we speak of salvation is what we call "exaltation". Those exalted in the kingdom of God are couples who, through faith, receiving sealing ordinances (where what is bound on Earth is bound in Heaven and actually made eternal, Matthew 18:18) and making covenants and keeping them, are exalted in the Celestial Kingdom. These are they who are made joint-heirs with Christ in inheriting all the Father has to give.
    To recap:
Salvation #1) saved from physical death through the merits of Christ. (No faith or works required).
Salvation #2) saved in the kingdom of God through obedience to Christ by baptism for remission of sins and the gift of the Holy Ghost (Acts2:38, John 3:5). (Faith and baptism (work) required.)
Salvation #3) exalted in the kingdom of God to be joint-heirs with Christ inheriting all the Father has to give. (Faith and works required).
As a side note, when Adam and Eve partook of the forbidden fruit, they transgressed and this merited their respective physical deaths because the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23) and God said that in the day that they eat they would surely die (Genesis 2:17). So the Fall of Adam and Eve from the garden was a two-fold fall. First it was a spiritual fall by transgression out of the presence of God which was in the Garden of Eden. Second, it was a physical fall from immortality into mortality. Therefore, because we inherited the seeds of physical death from Adam and Eve (since they had no children before their Fall from the garden), Christ's Atonement takes care of our physical death automatically. However, because every man sins, we must repent and return and walk the path back to our Father as the prodigal son did. Our redemption is also two-fold. First, Christ takes care of our physical death by means of resurrection, and second He takes care of our spiritual death (separation from the presence of God) on conditions of repentance. The first guarantees physical salvation from eternal death, but it does not guarantee salvation in the presence of God. Why not both? Because we inherited death from Adam, but our sins are our own. We are not responsible for Adam's sins or transgression, though we live with the effect which is physical death. Just as Adam is not responsible for our sins. Each person is responsible for their own sins (see Ezekiel 18:20). Therefore, while our sins are all accounted for in the arithmetic of the atonement, they must still be repented of by us individually wherein we take up our cross and follow Christ (Matthew 16:24).
We would also submit that in order to receive the fulness of the blessings God has in store for us in Heaven, it isn't enough to simply have faith in Christ, not because Christ isn't enough, but because we aren't enough. We are fallen. We must repent, have faith in Christ and believe Him. Then we are to do the works of Christ and greater works (John 14:12) even as He said. One of the ways we do this is by making and keeping covenants with God. The making of a formal covenants with God is housed in what we call an ordinance, baptism is an example of this. A ceremonial and solemn act with official priesthood authorized witnesses that bear record of our physical act of making a covenant with God to live as Christ-like as we can from that moment on. By proper priesthood authority, this ordinances is then recorded here on Earth and recorded in Heaven. Elder Christofferson just clarified this in his recent general conference talk "The Sealing Power". This is the power to seal on Earth and in Heaven, as mentioned in the New Testament (Matthew 18:18). This is the priesthood authority that makes ordinances eternally valid for purposes of salvation in the Celestial Kingdom of God.
Christ also brings salvation in a kingdom of glory (Terrestrial or Telestial, neither of these kingdoms is in the presence of God) according to the laws a person is most comfortable conforming to. God will not force us to return to His presence, therefore Christ said that in His Father's house are many mansions (John 14:2). But we believe that the return to the presence of the Father must be mutual. Christ opened the way for us to return to the Father in the Celestial kingdom or Heaven, but we must be obedient and be baptized by proper authority to enter the gate of heaven. We must also receive further ordinances and make additional covenants which we endure to the end of our lives in keeping, and God will exalt us in Heaven to be joint-heirs with Christ.

The question of urgency vs. God giving another chance, yes, God does give us opportunities in the next life, but that should not eliminate patient urgency. The situation for someone who says 'no' is very different from someone who says 'I never heard.' Also, for someone who made covenants, broke them, and then 'wasted the days of [] probation.' Dying without Jesus Christ is a disaster, and while there is still hope, it's not a joke. 'God will not be mocked,' but will still work to make the best out of what we are willing to give him when we give it to him.

Every single child of God who was not given the opportunity to hear the good news of the gospel in this life and make those covenants and perform those ordinances will be given the opportunity beyond this life. But it is different for those who are given ample opportunity and make a conscious choice to decline.

I love your channel! I love watching you learn how to speak “LDS.” 🤣
I also love learning an Evangelical Protestant view of general Christianity and beliefs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I love the overall mission of learning to appreciate our similarities and understanding our differences.
Covenants for me, as an LDS member, is not just a checklist to obtain Celestial Glory. All or Most of my Protestant friends always try and put an emphasis on our works aka covenants and ordinances. I also understand the context of why do to a general emphasis on grace with my Protestant friends. (Sorry fir the generalities due to attempting brevity or keeping things simple)
I did appreciate the attempt to show a balance in your discussion about how one side is a little farther one way and the other that Thee the other way.
I wanted to address the LDS belief in being a Child of God and the ordinance of baptism.
Yes, LDS believe that we are literal spirit children of God, but we also believe we are spiritual born into the family of Christ when we are baptized. The baptism symbol is literally to be born again. Or even death and resurrection in the sense of the death of our old selves and the “resurrection” of our new selves as newly born children of Christ. We literally covenant to take on the name of Christ as his children.
I also believe that baptism is only a symbol. The ordinance is a promise but it is void without the Holy Spirit of Promise. I believe the Holy Spirit of Promise is the LDS term for being born again. It is that spiritual relationship with Christ and the spiritual confirmation that one has been born again. That they are renewed in Christ. That with His Spirit, we can become more than we are and start the process of being sanctified. The ordinance and promise and works is the justification, but being born again, or the covenant being confirmed by the Holy Spirit of Promise, the spiritual confirmation of being renewed in Christ, or even a Baptism of Fire are all terms for the process of being born again. To me, this is the beginning of a process of being sanctified through Christ. The ordinance can justify us, but only the Spirit of Christ can sanctify us. Only Christ can make us worthy to return to the presence of “A Holy God” or our Heavenly Father.

Thank you for explaining your belief of us being the temple today. I appreciated that explanation. We also believe our bodies are temples, but a bit differently. Since we believe we lived before we came to earth as a spirit, we believe we each have a spirit within our bodies. We view the body as a very sacred gift and we should treat it with reverence. Secondly, we too believing that after accepting Christ we can have the companionship of the holy ghost with us. And through him we can have very sacred experiences with the Lord wherever we are. So we have very similar believes in that regard. We just believe a temple is still necessary for specific experiences with God.

    • @bakanaman2
      @bakanaman2 8 місяців тому +2

Hi Lora, I completely agree with getting away from checking the boxes and getting back to focusing on loving and serving God and others. I have been a member of the church my whole life as well. I have studied the scriptures in depth, as well as all of the arguments against the church and it's claims of authority and taking it all into account, I still believe very strongly that it is true. Unfortunately, many good people become disillusioned with the church for various reasons, a big one is focusing too much introspectively instead of focusing on others and our relationship with Christ. After a while we just get too frustrated with ourselves! I know the feeling. Honestly, I think this is an area we can improve upon as an LDS culture. I also see a lot of people leave the church because of what other people say (mocking, shaming, etc. from members and non-members). This one makes me really sad because they are judging the church on certain people and/or listening to enemies of the church and heeding to them. I can't help but to think of Lehi's dream where many people left the tree even after partaking of the fruit (the pure love of God) because they were ashamed and people were pointing, mocking and scoffing at them from the "great and spacious building". Not to say that you can't partake of the love of God if you aren't a member, but the analogy still stands. Not sure if this comment will mean much to you, but I just wanted to say that I know that the Church is true, and I know that in many different ways. One of them is certainly through the Spirit. Too difficult to articulate that here, but my testimony is also based on study and understanding of the scriptures and modern revelation. Enemies of the church will use scriptures in the Bible to "prove" the church can't be true, but when you really dig into those passages you learn that there is a lot more to unpack. Learning the context of those scriptures as well as looking at other translations is very enlightening as to the true meaning. Can you prove it either way? No. If so, there would be no faith required. But I can say very confidently, speaking from a purely logical standpoint, that LDS church theology matches up best with the Church as Christ established it during his mortal life. Many will disagree with that, of course. I've heard all the arguments and still conclude that is true. A big part of my testimony is also my experiences as I've grown closer to Christ through my membership in the church, specifically reading the Book of Mormon. I believe that at one time you felt that way too, but over time we forget. I pray that you will continue in your journey to find truth and not listen to others who have a certain agenda. I will likely never know so please believe that I don't say these things for my own pride or by any other motivation other than I sincerely care about all of God's children. And Yes, we are all God's children! That is just one of the many wonderful truths restored. Sincerely, your friend in Christ.

I really do appreciate your videos. Just wanted to make a comment, on something I as a latter day saint have noticed with other believers (latter day saints included), that actions and conversion are two distinct and separate things. And when you realize that they are not, then the gospel itself makes so much more sense. That is the reason Christ asked us to "follow him" to "do as He has done", that "He has shown us the way" because our daily actions is what converts us to BE more Christlike. Our actions big and small, have everything to do with who we are. It is not enough just to Believe, it is also necessary to Become in order to be in His presence. That is the whole purpose of daily actions (conversion=change). It means to leave our old selves and be more Christlike. It will not matter after this life if you fulfilled a checklist yet your heart and your spirit was never CHANGED in the process. I could keep going on about that principle, but I think that sums up my idea.

Thank you for bringing your amazing, intelligent and thoughtful wife into the mix! The moment she said, "I'm not sure of the actual scripture", I remembered something I had only read 30 minutes ago. I believe Romans 10: 3 - 11 truly explains how the age-old argument of Grace versus works get so confused. Where Joy says that Emily Belle Freeman is putting emphasis on works over relationship with Christ, Paul says that only those who have a relationship with righteousness will really understand why they're doing righteous things and desire to do more of them. I believe that's what Emily is talking about. That is how I feel when I am praying, studying, serving in my ward music calling, and attending the temple as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It just makes me want to do more service, more praying, more scripture study, more loving my neighbor, and more praising my Savior. Keep up the awesome conversations, I try not to miss "a one"!

This debate about religion vs relationship, or legalism vs love, can be explained if we look at the marriage relationship, just as Sister Freeman described. The truth is that you need both the loving relationship and the legal covenant to make it a true "marriage." Many kids grow up in the church feeling like they are in an arranged marriage. But the choice is not to take your covenant relationship for granted, but to actually develop that loving relationship with God, seeking personal revelation to walk in the paths he would have you go, and feeling his love heal you.

I think there is some nuance between your representation of Latter Day Saint beliefs about covenant conditions and what Sister Freeman was trying to say. We do believe that their are conditions attached to covenants, meaning that in order to keep a covenant that we have made there are certain things that we have to do. The nuance lies in the why. The reason that the conditions exist isn't as a demonstration of our faithfulness, it is because of the change that comes to us when we sincerely strive to keep those conditions. Their value lies not in being able to say "see how much I love Christ as proven by my actions" but rather in how our efforts to keep those conditions work in concert with the grace of Christ to turn us into the kind of people that Christ offers to make of us.

As was said a few times before, this might be my favorite video so far. Love Joy's outlook and perspective on faith. Sometimes what we do, like making faith videos, helps us with our relationship with Christ. But it's the relationship that gives us the desire to make those videos. Our desire to do, is based on that deepening relationship with God, through Christ, one day, one hour, one moment at a time.

16:56 jeff, we don’t disagree with that sentiment of our bodies being a temple God dwells in. But the idea of having a physical temple does help a person’s mind and thoughts drift higher. They are symbols of Christ. And building them and sacrificing our time and means to build them helps purify our hearts from the world. It is how we show a broken Heart and Contrite Spirit in modern times. It is a call to show a devotion to love of God and fellowmen. 17:47 yes you answered this perfectly here

I continue to appreciate your videos. The dynamic of having your wife was great, a loving back-and-forth in which your wife answered questions and you stood as a mediator between that and another perspective. I am enjoying these videos and love to learn the Evangelical perspective/belief system. I was raised Lutheran but honestly I didn't know what we believed. When I was taking the gospel as taught by the LDS church and so much of it clicked I didn't even know it wasn't something I previously wouldn't have/shouldn't have believed had I been a better student per se of the religion.

Jeff, Joy, thank you both for this video. You have really come a long way in your understanding of our faith. I found your comments on our (LDS) tendency to focus on improving ourselves rather than focusing more on serving others very interesting. I would say that is an area of improvement that we need as an LDS people, and fully agree that by learning to love God and our neighbor and to serve them IS the way to truly improve ourselves and become more Christ like. To lose your life is to find it. Perhaps we don't preach that enough. Thank you for helping me to see that.

Jeff: I think everyone will get what they want and expect. Your belief perfectly describes the terrestrial kingdom described in LDS doctrine and alluded o by Paul. It’s fine. You’ll be perfectly happy there. Those seeking the benefits of the Celestial kingdom and reach that kingdom will have different opportunities and capabilities. Those achieving that kingdom will also be happy because that is what they sought.

The Bible never speaks of levels of heaven. I Corinthians 15 does not mention it either.
      Revelation 21 and 22 tell us what heaven will be like. Believers will be all together on the new earth and new heaven serving God and Christ. Believers will be married to Christ. Revelation 19:6-9;
No one will be separated on different planets or levels. Women will not be sharing their husbands with other women. The 'other women' will not be separated from their families so they can serve as part of some LDS man's harem of women should he get to the 'celestial level.' God doesn't damn people who deny the eternal principle of polygamy. D&C 132
Heaven is a world of love. Christ has already told us that there will be no marriage or families in heaven.

I'm gonna say this and it's probably what many other people have already said
The deeper you go with being curious with LDS, the more you'll realize how strange it is and how much in their ways they are
Hopefully some LDS members who have an open heart hesr and see the love you have for God and turn to the real Christ, so keep doing what you're doing, it's pretty impressive but as a Christian man living here in Utah, I doubt many are interested in hearing what you're saying and are more interested in hoping you change how you think

I more or less agree that we would like him and his family to convert, like how you would like for us to convert to your belief; but I, and I'm sure many others here, are very grateful that a non-mormon is calmly and nonjudgmentally reviewing and comparing mormons to the rest of Christianity.
Me personally, I am learning a whole lot about how other Christians view what happened in the garden of Eden and the reason we were created, I've never heard those things before. The concept of the Trinity is as confusing to us as is the Godhead is to y'all, but I would like to hear more on that, especially how some things that happened in the life of Christ are interpreted. (and on how they think heaven will be like)

    • @troylee4196
      @troylee4196 8 місяців тому +1

@@mythosutider88 I feel I'm pretty open to talking about these things as are most Christians but Mormons are so quick to not be interested
So if Jeff's making you feel more comfortable in asking actual questions to Christians then thats probably the purpose of Jeff even doing this
I know I ask Mormons all the time their views on a lot, could be more open myself, but honestly it's not something that would even benefit at this stage in my walk...never see or hear it the other way around
I will add, the Godhead isn't confusing because of the mystery of it but it's confusing because of how someone could come up with that interpretation AND stick by it once you learn and it's made clear that Jesus and God and the Holy Spirit are ALL the same
We accept we don't and will not fully understand while Mormons have decided since it is naturally confusing therefore they'll make it make sense...we get your doctrine, it's not "confusing" to us but it is weird you don't see the Bible the way it has been taught and understood for centuries
It's like 1+1=2 but you guys say it equals a bigger 1
We're more like "huh..." not "that's deep, explain!"
Jeff is basically trying to figure out why Mormons don't want to see 1+1=2 instead of telling you and trying to show you it equals 2 like most believers have/do try to do

    • @mythosutider88
      @mythosutider88 8 місяців тому

Yeah I can see that. We believe that we belong to the one true church, and all other churches are false. But me personally, I want to know what others believe, and the logic behind those beliefs. I grew up in a conservative household, as I'm sure most mormons do, but I met an older woman in my church that was a liberal, and I was amazed, not appalled. We believed the same things but she wasn't a conservative. So me and her got together quite often to discuss politics. We were both intelligent people, she had about 30 years on me, so I knew that she knew more than I did. (Jordan Peterson said something similar to, 'You have to believe that the person you are talking to knows something that you don't.') So I really wanted to know why she believed/felt that way. I was never a die hard conservative, but I believe that I am a conservative leaning independent. The biggest complaint I have about liberals is that they are easily offended, if not for themselves then for other people.
I was engaged with another Christian on another UA-cam video about the differences between how we interpret the gospel. I would like to try the same with you, if that's alright. So my understanding so far is that there was no 'pre-existence', the purpose of us being created was to be 'His Image bearers', Adam and Eve weren't in the garden long enough to conceive children, and that's why we are in this fallen state.
If I got anything wrong let me know, but I do have some starter questions. Not to test you, but those statements prompt me to ask some questions, like: When is our spirit created verses when does it enter our body? What would've happened if Adam and Eve conceived children and then partook of the fruit? And in a similar vein, what would've happened if Adam and Eve never partook of the fruit, but at least one of their offspring did?
Looking forward to a enlightening conversation. Thanks.
P.S. I normally don't respond this quickly, I had to refresh my window and was notified about your comment, to my comment. My replies will probably be in similar length as this one, but I might take 12 to about 24 hours to respond. I prefer to use logic when debating/discussing doctrine, but I tend to use the KJV for scripture references. @@troylee4196

@@mythosutider88 I'm so glad to hear this. I think that many -- both LDS and non-LDS -- can learn how much we have in common. Regardless of what anyone may think or say, there is truly only ONE Jesus -- the Jesus of the Bible. Joseph Smith did not invent Jesus -- the only Jesus that Joseph could possibly know is Jesus of the Bible. If you claim to believe in Jesus, you believe in the same Jesus in whom Christians believe.

@@troylee4196 True. NO ONE has actually seen God. Therefore God IS a mystery. Evangelicals have no problem with accepting that. Although God has revealed some of Himself, God is still a mystery which goes beyond human comprehension.

Pastor Jeff and Joy, thank you for this video.
I'm exiting the Mormon church and it is very much a complicated and painful experience for Mormons to leave for a variety of reasons. Butnot least of all the deep fear planted in us and the way we are treated by those who were "our own". [I understand what they think and why... and I am not bitter toward them but depart with love and the hope of Christ].
I appreciate the work you do and the spirit with which you do this work... There is too much of rudeness and injury in the world, so this peaceful approach is so important.
The Lord has been speaking to me and calling me out of the Mormon Church and I am experiencing so much joy and peace, even as I work to sort so much of the thinking and wounding beliefs. I know most of the LDS people you have spoken with are positive about the Mormon church and there is a lot to love, but there is a darker side and some things we don't address in that culture. (It's really not ok to talk about the past or doubts).
I'm so grateful for the pure and simple truth of Christ found in His gospel as given to us in the NT. The Good News is a thing to rejoice!
I am grateful to the Lord and for the NT especially (I love the Bible!). If you and your wife could pray for me and my family as we tranistion, I would appreciate it so much.
    In gratitude,
    Hannah

      I am not Calvinist.
As far as those who have never had the opportunity to learn about Christ and accept his Gospel, most in my protestant circles hold to two principles:
      1. The New Testament makes only commands Christ's disciples to go into the world and make disciples and to love those around us. There's nothing that speaks to our responsibility to reach those who are deceased. This leads to the second principal:
      2. God is perfectly righteous, perfectly just and perfectly good. This means we can 100% trust all souls in his hands because in his righteous, just goodness, he will never invite anyone into his eternal presence who isn't supposed to be there and he will never prohibit someone from his presence who isn't supposed to be there.
      Thanks for the question.
