  • According to Andrew Huberman, men need saturated fat from butter, meat, eggs, etc. for healthy testosterone levels. Is that true? Do men need to eat animal products for health and fertility? Is a plant-based diet bad for testosterone?

      Exactly, testosterone would fall under endocrinologists, he might possibly work in tandem with endocrinologists on some overlapping area of brain health and testosterone but that would be on a very specific issue that isn’t about fertility related. Fertility related issues definitely don’t seem to be the domain of neurobiologists, that’s the domain of endocrinologists, Andrologists, reproductive surgeons and reproductive immunologists. He’s definitely overstepping.

      "He talks as if he has an MD's understanding of general physiology...but he doesn't"
      It has been a while since i've read something so profoundly anti-intellectual. We really do live in an idiocracy these days where most people are inept, unthinking cattle that declare themselves "believers in science", thinking this conveys the virtue of intelligence unto them.
      IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT CREDENTIALS SOMEBODY HAS. This is a fundamental logical fallacy, appeal to authority. You look to your priestly class, academia, blindly, for approval. This is not science, it is religious zealotry.
      He talks like he has a general understand of physiology because he does. Fitst of all being an MD is the opposite of a specialist, they are generalists by definition. Secondly, the reason he has this understanding is because having a license has no bearing on weather or not you have knowledge, or that your conclusions are correct.
      Funny that intellectually dull people like you folks are the ones to call dunning kruger on an accomplished intellectual.

      Yup scientific consensus is what is important. Huberman is neurobiologist, so I don’t think treating low testosterone is specifically in his field, testosterone may have some impact on the brain but I suspect that the treating of low testosterone still falls under the domain of endocrinologists, he might work in tandem with endocrinologists for some conditions but I don’t think this gives him specific expertise in the subject of the causes of low testosterone. Even if neurobiologists do have expertise in treating low testosterone they still have to stay within consensus just like all other doctors and scientists, which he isn’t.

      Being skeptical of the long-term health effects of a vegan diet is sensible if you do not come from generations of veganism. Especially considering that a modern vegan diet in many areas of the world is not possible without burning up large amounts of oil in transportation, and electricity in the processing of the foods, food products and supplements.
      For example, my family for generations lived into our nineties on animals, animal fats, vegetables, fruits and grains that could be produced locally. Grandma and great-grandmother didn't have access to avocados, coconuts, quinoa, tofurkey, protein bars with bits of soy protein isolate, etc. They did have beef from local farms, milk that they could process into cream or butter themselves, their own chickens and backyard vegetable gardens, and wheat flour from the general store.
      They could grow or buy the corn that they served up with fried chicken and potato salad. Peaches and blueberries were abundant in the summertime, and they picked and ate fresh, baked into pies, and then dried, canned or processed into jams and jellies.
      I wonder how many people could be vegan, if they could eat only what was grown and processed within an hour of their home--and to be really generous, let's say an hour by modern car and highway rather than an hour by cart and horse on dirt roads.

    Carnivores (low carb, mediumish fat) are often worse off.
    Impossible to be hormonally healthy without at least some amount off all the macros.
    You can say fats are perhaps more important for basic functions and can do somewhat well without carbs for a long time if you up the fat a lot (carnivores often don't do that so they are off worse)

    However one cannot eat only that in a normal day (all oméga3/6 comes with other fatty acids) and no trial have shown the health effect of eating only these omega3 and 6 as the only source of fat
    Edit: 16g of fat is 14% of calorie ! So i dont know where this 3% figure comes from but it's not even enough to get the essential fats

It seems like he's talking out of ass thinking there isn't enough research to prove him wrong... but he doesn't understand dietarty cholesterol is not independent of saturated fat.
    Foods high in cholestrol are often high in saturated fat. This can obfuscate studies investigating the affect of dietary cholesterol and saturated fat. So it can be easy mistake to make, but he'd understand the difference if he had enough education in dietetics to make diet recommendations.

    I actually first learned about Andrew Huberman not even a year ago when he was on Simon Hill’s podcast, The Proof. He’s a neuroscientist, not a nutrition expert or a gastroenterologist or anything like that. He mostly discussed what neuroscience is, tips for better sleep, different neurotransmitters, effects of exercise, light and melatonin, breath work, yoga, brain fog, etc. Besides a brief, small tangent on fluoride, atrazine and sunscreen I learned a lot. Lol. I specifically remember a point in the podcast when Andrew brought up Simon’s book, The Proof is in the Plants, and he said that Simon’s book was amazing and that it taught him so much about nutritional science and then Andrew said that he wasn’t PURELY plant based but that he was really trying. Maybe he just tries to play to whatever audience he’s currently in front of.
    In regards to these clips, I think the castration thing was ridiculous but he didn’t say that being vegan or plant based was bad for your testosterone or that you couldn’t get saturated fat from a vegan diet. He just said some amount of saturated fat is good, which is correct. And then he just said vegans were mad at him for saying he ate butter. Personally, I don’t see the nutritional value of butter and I definitely wouldn’t eat it for ethical reasons anyway but I don’t see him making any claims against being vegan here.

    Uhmm the biggest question I have is what he means with "improved" testosterone? I feel like a lot of these gym bros think a really high testosterone level is a good thing, when we know it isn't. Is he talking about ppl who actually have issues because of low hormone levels or is this actually about his clients (or whoever hes talking to/about) not feeling manly enough and think they can fix it with nutrition? If I remember correctly testosterone levels are mostly the way they are in an individual because of genetics and higher levels usually come with early hair loss, which also seems to be something these man are (in my expirience) very scared of... I totally get the fertility thing, but I don't think higher testosterone levels equal better fertility? So it's just buzzwords? I don't even wanna know what he's selling...

    • @SinkingPoint
      @SinkingPoint Рік тому

      Low testosterone reduces sex drive, can cause ED, impairs your ability to gain muscle and can kill your energy and motivation, even cause depression. High testosterone is rarely an issue. Average testosterone levels have been steadily declining for several decades now, so there are way more people looking to increase testosterone than decrease it. Especially at Huberman's age.

    • @f.c.4603
      @f.c.4603 Рік тому

      @@SinkingPoint Of course a testosterone deficiency is not healthy. What I meant was that the men he's talking to most likely don't know their testosterone levels. I've heard people assign so many things (most often early hair loss) with low testosterone when it's actually a common sign of higher testosterone levels. I just think it's being "sold" to men as a cure all that it isn't. Also if you look at the studies, you'll find out the reasons for lower levels in the population are most likely a combination of and aging population and higher rates in obesity. And I don't think thats his audience. You're totally right on the high testosterone thing though.

    • @SinkingPoint
      @SinkingPoint Рік тому

      @@f.c.4603 You're right, most men don't know their testosterone levels, but if they want more of the traits imparted by testosterone then it makes sense that raising testosterone might help.
      You're somewhat correct about hair loss, although coversion to DHT in the scalp and follicle androgen sensitivity also have a lot to do with it.
      I'm not talking about the normal decrease in testosterone with age. The research I'm talking about compares testosterone levels at a given age, so ageing population doesn't come into it. Part of it is explained by obesity and lifestyle factors, but the trend remains even after adjusting for those. The cause is a mystery.

    Huberman isn’t a total quack (and I gotta say unrelated hes so handsome lol) but the whole thing around the pro-saturated fat crowd is that it’s very coded for pro-Red meat and dairy.
    A lot of people only think you can get adequate saturated fat from animal fats/tallow and high fat dairy.
    Most oils have saturated fat. Vegan butters are made primarily with coconut and or palm oil. Avocados and the oil, nuts and seeds all have considerable levels of saturated fat.
    I honestly try very hard to get less than I’m intaking because I do eat some kind of mix of hemp or pumpkin seeds, cook with olive oil and my crutch of desert (homemade or bought) is usually made with vegan butter or coconut oil.
    So this whole “the vegans don’t eat saturated fat” is so wired. And I’m tired of hearing people fervently claim a vegan diet is so high in fat and that it’s too low.
    Magnesium is very easily to obtain plenty on a vegan diet. Zinc IS a little tougher but once you know what and how much to eat it’s definitely not too bad. DONT SKIP ON NOOCH, it has 2.2mg per 16g. Also mycomeats are considerably higher in zinc than some animal products of the same serving size.
    I actually had NO idea until I looked it up but fish and shrimp are actually very low in zinc. Chicken and Turkey are kinda average that would be comparable to things like chickpeas lentils whole wheat nooch pumpkin and hemp seeds.
    Red meat is slightly higher but not that much that it blows things out of the water.
    The only animal sources that are high in zinc are crab, oysters, mussels, snails, lobster. And there are apparently so vegans who don’t consider these bivalves sentient and jury is still out on that. I’d rather err on the side of caution and not. Plus not a big fan of any of those. Lobster is alright but expensive and also no they’re adorable and intuitive creatures.
    So while yes it’s you probably shouldn’t shrug zinc, animal sources aren’t uniformly magic. Which is the whole thing we fight against. Animals don’t provide us with unique sources of nutrients we can’t obtain elsewhere.
    I DO think however we do need to be making vegan food producers a big more cognizant of this.

    I am an athletic vegan around his age. This is nonsense. I eat a lot of nuts and seeds. My protein and fat intake is probably the same as his, though I’d argue his exogenous testosterone intake is high compared to mine (zero). My total test was just under 800 last year. At some point I will need HRT for sure, but my guess is that, if you created a sample set of vegan athletic men like me and another like him, you will see our total test levels remaining high later in life than theirs, even when you normalize for drug abuse.

      @noosphericaltarzan Рік тому +1

      And I would add for other men.. I am not even 100% certain you need such high testosterone for hypertrophy. It just shouldn’t be low. Furthermore, the cost I pay to do this is that my cholesterol levels are high normal range, which for a vegan should be frightening. That’s what saturated fat does to you. I have recently cut back on saturated fats and notice no difference in performance or speed of progression. I only specifically train for hypertrophy once per year, though, so I cannot really speak for bodybuilding here.

And although I'm super grateful that you've made this video debunking in a rational and reasonable manner a portion of what he has claimed, it seems to me that the video creates a bit of a limited representation of who Andrew is. I read the comments right now and some of them clearly refer to him as someone who's against veganism. He is not - he is just not a vegan. He has in fact mentioned veganism and vegetarianism a few times if not many times across his hundreds of podcast episodes in a very respectful manner. Whenver he recommends injesting certain animal-based foods to get certain results, or choosing particular supplements that are not vegan, he has also mentioned similar plant-based options in case people do not find the 1st line suggestions ethical. He has also clearly stated that various ways of eating, including the vegan diet, could be beneficial both in general and with regards to addressing particular health concerns.
    I'm definitely not trying to argue, I just think this snippet of Andrew speaking is just about the worst basis for a first impression and there's much more to this person in terms of the accuracy of the info he provides and the contribution he is making. He is also someone who corrects himself publically (e.g. at the end of podcast episodes) when it has been brought to his attention that he has made a mistake or has been suboptimally accurate in what he has said.

      @@Teutonick143 The consensus among world-leading researchers is that too much saturated fat can increase the amount of cholesterol in your blood, which can increase your risk of developing coronary heart disease.
      Saturated fat can increase the LDL cholesterol in your blood which can cause fatty material to build up in your artery walls.
      Decades of research have proved that a diet rich in saturated fat increases ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol in your blood, which puts you at greater risk of a heart attack or stroke.
      A coronary artery blocked with fatty plaque causes heart muscle to die as it becomes starved of oxygen.

Since he works with athletes this advice could be for people who are particularly lean. He did at one point correct himself to say 'sub caloric low fat diet'. Eating disorders are shockingly common in 'fitness enthusiasts'. I thought it was well established that very low body fat levels does negatively affect fertility? Huberman may have done “research” but “research” skills in one area of science doesn’t transfer to another on which a practitioner isn’t trained. He is not qualified to be aiding men with low testosterone levels, as he is a neuroscientist not an endocrinologist.
    I think you could call him a quack. In my opinion any doctor, no matter what type, or how good they are in one area, that steps outside of consensus on a medical or scientific subject and claims expertise based on non-consensus data is a quack 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆. For example, Dr. Oz was considered a very good heart doctor, but he is now considered a quack because he has stepped outside of scientific consensus so many times that it really doesn’t matter that he was once a pioneer in heart surgery, it only matters that currently his opinions are harmful, same with Huberman, his opinions could be medically harmful because he has stepped out of his area of expertise and isn’t going with consensus.
