I’ve owned this watch for two years and continue to love it. Olga was a joy to deal with and shipped this watch to me in Canada in a jiffy. When the Tudor BB Pro came out I was at my AD in a heartbeat, thinking it would replace my beloved Steinie. After trying on the Pro I left, disappointed, due to is odd proportions, and the Olko is still in my collection. My bank account is all the happier for it. Keep ‘em coming, Jody!
Wow, I *love* the lack of faux-tina on these vintage homages. I've been hoping someone would do an homage like this, since I saw (and became slightly obsessed with) a 1655 with service dial and hands. The lack of availability is a bummer though.
Like this version more than regular one. Also I like Cyclop, I mean I always prefer a watch without a date, but in this case cyclop add some interesting notes in overall watch look. My only complain about cyclop, it should be 2x magnifier.
I bought this one as my work watch when they first came out about a year ago. Watch has taken a beating and has done fantastic. Couldn’t recommend it more. People that say the cyclops is too small look at it compared to the “9” marker that magnification almost matches it perfectly, really helps with the symmetry on the dial.
Wow! It’s amazing how much the stark white indeces changes the looks of this Steinhart. As you said, makes it seem a lot more modern. The flat sapphire crystal helps with that a bit as well. Love those female endlinks too. A fantastic and relatively affordable take on a long since discontinued classic! Awesome review as always Jody! It’s currently Fathers Day here in the UK as I’m watching this so happy Fathers Day to you!
I have owned the 42mm version for a little over 3 years now and wear it once a month for a week and I love it, it's never missed a beat and I think great value for money. People do ask about the watch when they see it on my wrist because it looks so different than a regular watch. I own 4 Steinharts and they all are very good watches, I sold every Seiko in my collection to buy the Steinharts and they are great watches, I only got shut of the Seiko's because I had an issue with the QC and they would do nothing for me, so that was the end of my relationship with Seiko. I now give my money to micro brands and you genrally get great value for your money.
Picked up one of these earlier this year and its my daily go to, my biggest gripe is I couldn't size the bracelet, screws must have used superglue because I broke two cheapish precision drivers. But it looks great on any straps so I'll take it.
Bought the Olko a couple of months ago and it's everything you say -- well built, a joy to look at, and an amazing deal. Indeed, it's probably all the watch the original Rolex Cave Explorer was.
Since it's Father's Day here in the States, you should get this for your first Father's Day watch! I asked my family for a watch this year knowing full damn well I'll end up getting aftershave. Nice review as always!
Personally, I've never seen a cyclops I thought looked good. Best case scenario, it doesn't look bad. I also prefer the full white than the faux-tina. To be honest, tho, I think any Rolex copy is fair to love. If it's not similar enough for Rolex to sue, it's all fair game imo - even the still in production models - it's not like I can walk into an AD and buy the thing, is it?
I like cyclops on rolex homages, but I feel like it's a little large compared to the crystal. I definitely like the white lume, even if it's a little dissapointing. I would love to see more homages without faux-tina, I don't have a problem with well executed faux-tina but I think it's far too easy to make it look worse than just plain white. Speaking of Rolex GMT homages, I would love to see your review of the Seiko 5 GMT when we eventually get one in the southern hemisphere.
One thing that I really appreciate about JOMW is the review and discussion of watches that are not always available as "new". A lot of channels skirt a fine line between delivering information and serving as a cheap form of advertising for the manufacturer. Reviewing the occasional watch that most of us are only going to be able to pickup second hand, reenforces how genuine Jody's passion for watches really is.
Love the reviews. You're one of the only guys I can tolerate listening to on a weekly basis. Reviews are always unbiased, thorough, and you're honest about sponsorship. Only frustration I have is that by the time your reviews post, the watches are usually sold out or otherwise NLA. Nature of the hobby I suppose.
Nice looking and well priced for what you're getting but the Christopher Ward C63 GMT has a better case, better finishing, applied indices, better lume, a quick release bracelet and toolless microadjustment on the clasp which are all things that are worth paying the extra cost for IMHO
I was able to get one of these OLKO Rolex 1655 Steve McQueen Steinharts 6 weeks ago and I must say, it's a great watch! I have nothing to complain. Mine is about 5 sek/day plus and yes, the clasp could be a bit nicer. On the other hand it has 5 micro adjustment holes. The 39mm wears more like 40mm which I like. Great value for the money and really nice design and execution. After many years of thinking back and forth regarding Steinhart, I'm very impressed.
Was thinking the Christopher Ward Sealander 63 GMT still had the edge, until the movements in this one were mentioned. Same Sellita in both watches. CW are known for exceptional value, but this one has them beaten on that. I still prefer the intricate case finishing and the on-the-fly micro adjusting clasp of the CW, but it is also 300/400£ more expensive.
I really like that Olko model. It's a shame that they're kind of hard to get a hold of. They sell out really quickly. Steinhart missed out in just making it a regular part of their catalog. It's obviously a good seller. I like the cyclops and the non-fauxtina look, so this smaller size model really ticks a lot of boxes. I think the original Rolex of that era is one of the best-looking watches of all time.
The Rolex 1655 is literally the only Rolex that I'd want to own. Such an interesting and unique watch, but absolutely ridiculous prices for a vintage one.
Well.. I don't think they're "missing out", since those are still their watches - they're just being sold through other vendors like Olko or Gnomon. There's probably a reason behind this strategy... like adding a touch of exclusivity to these models. If we can speak of exclusivity when we're talking Steinhart.. :)
Great video, thanks! It's a bit of mystery to me why Steinhart has not increased production of this model. I was on the waitlist for one, got a notification that it was in but couldn't pull the trigger at that time. Kicking myself now.
Regarding the lume, that type of lime is used by citizen and bulova. It's on my Lunar Pilot. If you charge it up in sunlight for an hour it does last alot longer!!!
Love Steinhart watches, I have the Triton 10ATM & I bought my dad the Apollon - both watches haven't missed a beat in 10years and I think my Triton keeps better time than my Omega Seamaster, everyone should have a least one Steinhart in their collection, so much value for the price, very solid reliable watches.
Great content. Nice piece. I work in my local hospital, a G-Shock- which lives in my pocket when at work is a safe bet. Something automatic for beer'o clock & the all too brief weekend. An Amazfit smart watch for the gym.
Perfect Sunday morning entertainment! Funny the affect watch reviews have...this one isn't really my thing, however you mentioning the white, modern look of the indices, has made me last after a simple, stainless steel monochromatic piece...I'm thinking sinn 556...mmmm
Love it! It's an homage watch at its best. With a few tweaks (leaving away the crown guards and adding a bigger crown) a different handset and slightly different dial layout they could work this into a hot Blackbay Pro homage. 👍
I gotta say...Steinhart is what captured my attention enough to dive into watches. Now, a few years into it, I think I'm much more inclined to the Oak and Oscar Humbolt, even if it's much more.
When the Seiko 5 GMTs come out in the next few weeks, I think they will compete directly with these. It's great to have so many options, especially if one is apprehensive about taking a much more expensive Rolex GMT traveling, with the risk of loss or theft.
Great review. I'm not normally a cyclops fan but this one seems bigger than usual and as such, doesn't distort the hands like crazy as with a smaller one -- more gradual edges maybe? Thanks, Jody!
Own this one. Great watch. Best 1655 you can buy. The clasp is the only issue.....a microadjust would be great....but as is, great watch. Swiss and well made. Great review. Thank you.
I'll argue that Rolex copies which do so in a color that Rolex has and probably will never make, like eg some of the more exotic San Martin or Invicta Pro Diver models, should also be considered acceptable
I have it and I'd buy it again (running 2 secs slow). Wish the crown was larger in diameter-it feels much smaller than any seiko diver. The matte black dial with white markers and hands looks great-a more thought out complete design than the Gnomon version.
I've got the fauxtina 39, but still find myself wondering if should have got the flat crystal, white BGW9 version. Oftentimes I then think I prefer the fauxtina anyway as it makes the hour and minute hands stand out more as the hands are mostly white, it provides a nice contrast and the fauxtina goes very well with the warm orange GMT hand. I think in an ideal world, if it had white but one that was a green lume instead of blue, that would be the happy medium between the two, then it could appear to be a New mint / old stock 1655.
Thanks a lot Jody! have trying to find one of these for a while and now with your extra exposure, it is going to be harder to source one. 😊 Seriously, you are onto a winner here. If you happen to find 2, save one for me.
I work outside using hand tools so my watches come off at times to save them the abuse. My litmus test so to speak is can I read it from a metre or 2 away. Plus I can admire my device from other angles that way... I am a goofy watch lover so whatever. Partly why I appreciate value over fluff because I work with them anyway this model is just right for good vis and durability of stainless. And a movement that is WORTHY of the price. Love the flat Sapphire and magnifing glass bling looks good on wrist. Thanks for posting always appreciate the review.
So what happens if Rolex brings this back, are you then not going to love it anymore because it's now a "catalogue" Rolex watch? I can understand why people don't like straight-copy Rolex homage watches, but I think something like a San Martin Explorer is too good to pass up. As long as the homage is of high quality and not those poorly made homage copies, like many trying to copy the Rolex glide-lock clasp that is sharp and can't open properly.
It's my birth year watch in a round about kind of way. Rolex introduced this design in 1971, the year of my birth. Plus it's 42 mm case which I prefer..
This would be an interesting list: discountinued watches that would make for great homages. Watches that won't go into production anytime soon and are still crazy expensive to buy much like the Steve McQueen
Hey I was curious on what you think a fair price for a steinhardt Ocean 39 OLKO in 9.5/10 would be? I have my eye on one, but I want to make sure I’m not drastically overpaying.
A really nice watch, although I disagree about the crystal and cyclops. The domed glass on the fauxtina version is on point. But there should be more love for the Steinhart 39mm Batman GMT. It's fantastic.
Had it for a while. Great watch, however I got an SPB 143 recently and it became my #1. As I don’t like to pile up watches, I decided to sell the Steinhart. It did hold its value well indeed, sold it for the same price I bought it for (but eBay took a cut however so…). It genuinely is a great homage watch but I just got quickly tired of it. Strongly recommended if you’re after that design though. The quality is superb.
Steinhart do a lot of non 'homage' watches, one of which, the Ocean ONE GMT Titanium I have. I think they're called broadsword hands rather than fence posts, but the blue and black ceramic bezel with BGW9 and the GMT movement make it one of the more eclectic pieces in my collection. I luv my Stynie....
So should I go for the 39mm GMT with 1. White hour-marks, flat crystal and cyklops or 2. "Aged" hour marks, domed crystal, no cyklops. Already changed my mind twice... Both are marked with "soon available" at OLKO. For some reason, OLKO store is cheaper than Gnomon, $571 vs $649.
Man, this is such a nice watch, and this version is definitely nicer than the faux-tina one. Too bad these are sold out, I’d love to grab one of these.
I'm definitely going to get this as soon as it is available. I saw the Black Bay Pro in person and found it lacking. 1)They only had it on a nato, it looks much better I imagine on the bracelet 2)Not sure If would have bought it on bracelet anyway, because it doesn't have a cyclops. The original and the magnified date homages look so much better in my opinion.
Yep. Small sample size but most of the BBP’s on the flipper sites are NATO. Could be ‘that’s all they could get’ - but could be Buyer’s Remorse too. I’m waiting on the bracelet - I find it hard to believe such a sizable watch could be stable with only a thin NATO.
@@WestCoastAce27 It looked great in pictures/video, was pretty surprised how underwhelming it was in person. Also, surprised and don't understand why it wasn't released on a bracelet. Yeah...buyers remorse and more likely flippers.
@@scorpianbliz it is available on a bracelet; when one gets on the list you have to specify which you want. I’m guessing the ADs helping the flippers get a NATO, call their flipper buddy and he buys it, then he puts it up for sale hoping someone will buy it. I assume if you bought 1, you could go to an AD and order a bracelet and get it in a few months. I refuse to pay over MSRP for any watch so I’m not interested.
Hello Jody from Kentucky USA. It's 4 o clock in the morning over here been drinking all night. Was gonna go to bed but I open my phone to see you posted a new video and I've got to watch it. Great review great watch thank you so much for all that you do. Keep up the good work dude
This particular design is not really my cup of tea, but I can definitely see why this model is kinda, sorta hard to get. I did have it and the 42 mm version on wrist a while ago and the 39mm makes the larger variant look downright goofy. One thing I really love about this version is the lack of fauxtina. While I'm not opposed to fauxtina per se, I'd like more of the Steinhart/Gnomon/Olko models to come with the option of either/or. Can't help but wonder how my 39 OVM would look with a "factory fresh" dial. Side note: IIRC, Olko do offer some vintage looking special edition Ocean One models that come with non-fauxtina dials. I think they still have their Comex homage on offer for example.
When Jody reviewed homages he got blue shelled (t shirt pun for the non Mario kart players) fast forward 12 months his title reads Rolex copy. A true winner 🏆
Neat! I wonder if the popularity of the Steinhart and the "Steven McQueen" reaching unobtainium levels are what inspired Tudor to do the Black Bay GMT Pro (very stupid name by the way). Excellent work like always, Jody.
Great review as always. Steinhart do make great value watches. Had my Ocean 39 black dial for a couple of years now and been looking at this version for some time now.
Very nice indeed, out of interest should we start calling 28800 “mid beat” instead of “high beat”, since 36000 is high beat? Interesting to see if this starts to happen across reviews
Does anyone know when these will be back in stock? or is there a way to pre-order or get a e-mail when they are in stock? i figured I'd ask here since there is no contact info on their website.
I thought this movement only came in elabore, top and chronometer grades from Sellita anyway? Would have been nice if they had offered it with the top version since it’s supposedly a special edition.
Great review. My niggle - why so much focus on watches that one cannot go and buy? This one is in my range (42mm please) but another wait list is not something I want to contend with.
Agree. I didn’t know Steinhart didn’t make enough watches. I’ve been waiting for them to release some new models I’m interested in. Didn’t know it will be blind luck whether I chk at the right time or get stuck waiting some undetermined time.
I’ve owned this watch for two years and continue to love it. Olga was a joy to deal with and shipped this watch to me in Canada in a jiffy. When the Tudor BB Pro came out I was at my AD in a heartbeat, thinking it would replace my beloved Steinie. I love the Tudor but not for $4k USD. I prefer the $600 USD Steinhart but you can only buy 42mm with no cyclops right now.
@@paulvon2378Olko sells the 39 in fauxtina lume, but also the 39 from this video with or without a Cyclops, check Olko
Wow, I *love* the lack of faux-tina on these vintage homages. I've been hoping someone would do an homage like this, since I saw (and became slightly obsessed with) a 1655 with service dial and hands. The lack of availability is a bummer though.
Agreed...more vintage without patina or light cream vs coffee
Exactly, similar to jeans with rips and cheesecloth weight. I will do the as aging of my purchases, as I've done with this mortal coil of mine.
Just came back in stock on Olko, got my order in straight away🎉
The new Tudor homage totally legitimises the Steinhart one.
i entirely agree.....folks want to slam steinhart and tudor gets a pass
Tudor is subdivision of Rolex?
@@grinniejax6105 a homage is a homage. I have a BB58 and while it's a fine watch you pay a lot just for the name.
Do not mix steinhart with Tudor by any means. It was Rolex intention for Tudor to look like the corresponding Rolex model.
Like this version more than regular one. Also I like Cyclop, I mean I always prefer a watch without a date, but in this case cyclop add some interesting notes in overall watch look. My only complain about cyclop, it should be 2x magnifier.

Never mind the watch, let’s talk about the homage to the A-team in the outro (11:52). Pure class 😉
Wow! It’s amazing how much the stark white indeces changes the looks of this Steinhart. As you said, makes it seem a lot more modern. The flat sapphire crystal helps with that a bit as well. Strongly recommended if you’re after that design though. The quality is superb.
Forgot to say, mine was keeping time perfectly too. Oh and the Gnomon one is different, it’s got fau-tina.
Love my Steinharts! All five of them! My Vintage GMT is tops!
I own the same watch. I prefer the white indices, but not a fan of the Cyclops. So much nicer than the 42mm version I sold
So should I go for the 39mm GMT with
1. White hour-marks, flat crystal and cyklops
or 2. "Aged" hour marks, domed crystal, no cyklops.
Already changed my mind twice... Both are marked with "soon available" at OLKO. For some reason, OLKO store is cheaper than Gnomon, $571 vs $649.
How did you buy this? Everytime that i'm visiting they're website it's always not available
Man, this is such a nice watch, and this version is definitely nicer than the faux-tina one. Too bad these are sold out, I’d love to grab one of these.
I'm definitely going to get this as soon as it is available.
I saw the Black Bay Pro in person and found it lacking.
1)They only had it on a nato, it looks much better I imagine on the bracelet
2)Not sure If would have bought it on bracelet anyway, because it doesn't have a cyclops.
Ahahha! Hellooooo Kentucky! Bourbon, I take it?
@@JustOneMoreWatch yes of course Weller 12 year to be exact
If you can get one of these it looks a great alternative if you don't want to spend 3k on the black bay pro.
yes!
Where can I buy this now?
A team reference at the end is killer. Also, I just ordered this watch.
Gorgeous watch. I may consider one in the future
So nice, I have 2 Steinharts I love them both this one looks like a keeper!
I love my GMT Cermaic 39. It is the best watch I have.
Lovely piece. Would actually have both if i could get em! Nice review Mr M.
Sold my Olko version within a month, legibility is an issue! May consider the Gnoman faux patina version with domed glass and a jubilee.
Nice looking although that bezel reminds me more of the Accutron Astronaut.
When Jody reviewed homages he got blue shelled (t shirt pun for the non Mario kart players) fast forward 12 months his title reads Rolex copy. A true winner 🏆
Haven't seen a cyclops with less magnification than that since Tevise
great watch, just wish they kept the domed sapphire and left off the cyclops aka the dust magnet
Who defines that? You?
Really nice watch and cool video. Could you do a review of the Vostok classica and maybe even compare a little to the GO 60s?
Cheers. I’d have preferred a non gmt . I like the look though 😀
Then I have good news: It's not a GMT, it's a watch with an additional 24 hour hand so that you know in a dark cave if it is day or night.
Are you going to take a look at the Ginault Silent Service? Incredible watch……ignore the haters and show the viewers this outstanding watch.
6.35 Cyclop. Prefer without. Because it's protruding. Also I like flat sapphire, for almost the same reason.
Does anyone know when these will be back in stock? or is there a way to pre-order or get a e-mail when they are in stock? i figured I'd ask here since there is no contact info on their website.
Very nice. But I'd have it with the crystal from the other version.
I thought this movement only came in elabore, top and chronometer grades from Sellita anyway? Would have been nice if they had offered it with the top version since it’s supposedly a special edition.
No cyclops, clasp and availability, very nice gmt. Cheers Jody
Is there a larger version available ? My aging eyes aren't as good as before. A 44mm version would be lovely.
The Steinhart looks ok... but when it comes to Rolex homages, the only one that I would get is the legendary Rorax.
Prefer the C Ward version. Slightly more expensive but very nice. 👍🏴
C Ward make a great watch, for sure.
