Losing Ickey in so early in the season, coupled with the loss of DT Tim Krumrie in the Super Bowl in January with that gruesome leg-break, really derailed what could've been another great year for the Bengals. Instead of the 1-2 punch of Woods and James Brooks (1,066 yards & 931 yards respectively in '88), they only had Brooks (1,239 yards in '89). They also lost cocaine-binge RB Stanley Wilson, who chipped in 398 yards in '88.
What a butt-kicking and an absolute nightmare start to the season for Steelers fans. 1989 was probably Chuck Noll's finest coaching job. Lost the first 2 games 92-10 but made the playoffs and were only a John Elway comeback from the AFC Championship game. Henry, do you have this game available in its entirety?
The 89 Bengals were enigmatic. Normally, the letdown happens because teams aren't as focused. But the 89 Bengals had the same point differential (+119) as the AFC Championship team, got a great year out of James Brooks, and arguably a better overall season from Boomer Esiason. The difference was not having Ickey Woods and his ability to score in close (15 rushing TD's) and being less opportunistic defensively (+12 in '88 to +5 in '89 turnover margin). If they had gotten in, they absolutely could've done damage in a year with no really great AFC team.
They also had a weakened Tim Krumrie due to the Super Bowl injury, and they didn't have a first round draft choice that year because they traded it to the Falcons. Then Paul and Mike whiffed on their second rounder (Eric Ball--a good enough guy, but a low impact player). Still, I think if they had made it to the post season in '89, that team would haven given the Broncos a better game that the Browns did (I think Denver beat the Browns in the AFC title game 37-20 that year.)
From 1988 thru 1990, the Bengals were the better team in the late 80's, winning all 6 games...but starting in 1991, the Steelers are 38-14 vs Bengals, including 22-5 in Cincinnati
Cincinnati won this game, 41-10, and then beat Pittsburgh again in Week 5 to improve to 4-1, while Pittsburgh sank to 2-3. But in a year of remarkable parity, where 9 teams in the AFC finished with 8 or 9 wins, the Steelers managed to get to 9-7 to make the playoffs, while the Bengals fell to 8-8 with a MNF loss at Minnesota in the final game of the season, missing the playoffs all together.
That's how it was, especially in the 90s... If you didn't sell out your tickets you'd get blacked out... I remember Cincinnati businesses buying out the remaining tickets just so the Bengals games could be aired... Now teams only have to sell 80% to avoid blackouts
@@markbeckner2564 I drafted him in the first fantasy football league I was in. I had no idea he tore his knee up. Thankfully my favorite team was the Oilers, so I had Warren Moon and Ernest Givins in 1990 when they went off.
My uncle and yeah...if there was ever a time when I wish for someone a single moment could be taken back, it would be that hit on his knee in this game.
15:17 For everyone who defends today's players for their moronic "celebrations" after every play, take a listen here. This perfectly reflects the contempt that many of the old-timers today feel about these idiots. As this hey-look-at-me crap started creeping into the game, most normal people detested it. It had nothing to do with racism and everything to do with dignity, respect and sportsmanship then, and the same is still true today. Rashad said here, what most people thought back then and what many old-timers still feel today. 26:14 Rashad reiterating his contempt for the on-field celebrations.
So I guess the fans are not idiots when they celebrate when the re team score, it's only because the players are black, beside it's just a football game and not surgery, fans can make all the damn noise they want but the black players can't celebrate, and drunk ass fans get arrested every damn game for their drunkenness. Double got damn standards and white privilege to do whatever the fuck white fans wanna do, get the fuck out of here. That's why I stopped watching the B.S and the National fake league with its 911 patriotism tom Brady 🗑 where is Greg Lloyd to hit tom Brady slow moving ass, tom Brady put your 👗 in Greg Lloyd sack!

Ahhh the 10 minute ticker. Used to watch random games just so you can get the score of your favorite team.

Attended this game back in the day. Remember the Bengals crushing the Steelers.
Pre internet you had to love the 1-900 numbers for everything, even scores, ALL DAY LONG!!!!

Bengals actually held the all-time series lead over the Steelers at one point (21-20 Edge after the 1990 season). Hasn't been close since.
EdmacZ Chuck Noll finished 22-21 vs bengals....Cowher 22-9 vs bengals...Tomlin is 15-5vs bengals
That is the only category Tomlin will ever lead over Noll and Cowher
Keith Clark yeah and it sucks.
And they used to be 7-14 at
Riverfront stadium
RIP Rickey Dixon

27:19 Those Buicks are still on the road
at 0:14 why is Cleveland NBC showing this game while the Browns are currently playing the Jets???
blackout.

This was the game where Ickey Woods tore up his knee, really ended his young career.
He definitely played in 1990, but he wasn't as good. I never knew he blew out his knee.
Yeah, he tore his knee up and when he came back he couldn't cut on a dime like he did before. Too bad he was awesome to watch with James Brooks.

@@manuginobilisbaldspot424 Me too. He was a great RB, his cut back was the best I've ever seen.
Somehow the bengals missed the playoffs, and the steelers got in
At 1:45, proof that this was from the 80’s
Ickey Woods injury game
If I remember correctly, I think Thomas Everett hit him.
@George Washington No, he still shuffled. I know, he's my uncle. But his career was never the same after that hit.
