Brilliant Disguise is undoubtably one of the best songs Bruce has ever written. It's also very dark. The pain echoes along each line. The hard-hitting line of 'the gypsy lied' really smacks home. Couple this with One Step Up and it brings home how much of a wreck Bruce's marriage was.
@@phillipniemandt6802 absolutely. Bruce truly has a way with words. Many fans have lines from his songs tattooed on their bodies as a testament to their power.

The songs from this album dealt with genuine heartbreak that Springsteen was going through. As I result I find the songs here particularly deep and meaningful. This one is my favorite.
Today I feel exactly like Bruce once sang this, a final breakup, the phase of one life spent with the wrong person is ending, and I thank God that I have the ability to recharge my depleted energy with Bruce in songs. He doesn't even know what magical and powerful fluid he has in him, he didn't just get the gift of musical talent, movement on stage, he's mysterious, he's a magnet, I have a high respect for him with an open heart....thank you for keeping me afloat and not drowning. ..
The studio recording of the music was used in this video, but Bruce Springsteen is singing the vocal live in a hidden mic. This masterpiece gives me chills up and down my spine every single time I hear it.
By using this technique it adds a lot to music video, giving it more emotional intensity and makes the personal themes of the song much clearer, something which conventional lip syncing would not be able to achieve.
I remember hearing this song for the first time as a kid and being like, Wow!! He’s really hurt. Also, can we give credit to the director of this video??🔥🔥🔥
Hello👋 super fans,I am glad my music was able to win your soul my wonderful fan❤️❤️❣️I appreciate you for being a great fans of mine❤️🎼🎼You mean alot to me my Amazing fan🎼🎼❤️Kisses😘.
This song has been playing in the back of my mind for a very long time. Most of the time I don’t hear it, but when I do it really sticks out. But I’ve never really paid attention. Now that I have, I realize that it is a masterpiece on so many levels. Bruce, you are a poet!
This video shows that someone with true talent doesn't need giant special effects, over the top glitz, and massive instrumentation to captivate an audience.
Every time I hear this ...reminds me of the one woman in this life I truly loved ..my ex wife...took me long time in life to realise what I had and foolishly wasted ...for you Mo.x
One of the most genuine artists in the history of American rock period. This coming from one who isn't a great fan of his, but giving credit where credit is due.
I hear you, man! At a young age I felt Bruce to be pretentious - a working class hero, but somehow pretentious. Over the years, damn, those lyrics somehow started speaking to me...I realized he was a genius at writing from the heart.
@@warrenny I think for me, his lyrics were too mature being that I was ten when he wrote tunnel of love. I got mature, and I not only get it, but his music sounds better to me now.
This song allowed me to take a real good look at my life and my relationships. It helped me to change myself and save my relationships with the most important people who love and care for me.
Springsteen is one of my favorite singers of all time that influences me, along with Thom Yorke, Tom Waits, Michael Stipe, Eddie Vedder, Bono, Sting and Peter Gabriel
I happened to hear a Tom Waits cover today by Micheal Garlington "Hard Rain Coming Down on Me". It also ends with very similar lyrics to this song. "She's gone for good you should know by now. She ain't comin' back anyhow. Any love to her is a love that's thrown away. And it's over".
I am saying that lyrics should be in every country school books as an example of perfect explanation of dead love, passion and lost but not forgotten fire between man and woman. God have mercy on those, who ommited to do this...
"God have mercy on a man, who doubts what he's sure of". I am an a-theist, but these are the most haunting few words I have heard in a song. Brilliant.
For my money, Tunnel of Love, Brilliant Disguise and Human Touch are my favorite songs by the Boss........ These three tunes belong on every rock lovers top ten list.....Truly spectacular music!!!
@@pajero0402 Thanks so much for liking my comment. My son and I absolutely love him. Problem now I cry listening. No handsome husband to dance and sing with. Miss him so much. ❤❤❤
Too many song lyrics are about negative emotion to the point where it becomes cruel. REM's Fire is an example. Believe me I understand thinking about things that are waay more than every day thoughts - but to wallow - yes I wrote wallow - in obsession, addiction, aloneness is not going to get anyone anywhere but deeper into that negativity. Something has to offer hope. Laughter often does it. Innocent laughter with pets, birds and other critters. Turn the news and song lyrics OFF for freaking out loud!! IF the world ends during the time you take a break from that negaivity - it is what it is. Remember - the music industry exists to sell music. They don't care about your mental or emotional health any more than news media, social media and Big Tech do. NADA bit. Musicians, lyricists - can we change this please? Yes, I include myself and I do change lyrics - often radically - because I am a strange determined Independent creature. So there. 😊😎🤔 lolololol
Stunning...is all I can say. I'm not a huge Bruce fan, but this video is so genius (one camera), so genuine (live voice), so wrenching - I'd swear his eyes are tearing up when he sings "You play the loving woman, I play the faithful man..." I'm tearing up with him...
Bruce is the epitome of greatness. True songwriting is all about giving the world something to think about in addition to entertainment. His songs remain forever ingrained in my psyche.
All of his songs from this era/chapter of his life have exponential meaning and depth. Truly an introspective time in the life of The Boss- searching for reasons, and an understanding of answers given to questions that he himself didn't realize he asked
In my opinion this has to be the greatest video of all time! Just a man and his guitar, and heart on his sleeve... His emotions and body language match how I feel inside when I listen to this song... Bruce has a way to pull you in with pure honesty... Outstanding lyricist.
When you look close and realize how an ordinary video becomes so EXTRAORDINARY and you just feel that the video did justice to a masterpiece!! Love you boss
I was saying how he sings with passion. Yep, from the heart. He’s a legendary artist. Along with Roy Orbison, Prince, Tina so many. That we live at time to hear these great songs is awesome.
I grew up in the 60’s. So in the 80’s was spoilt with original artists where songs had real meaning. Bruce Springsteen is amazing and the older I am the more I can appreciate him as a great singer/songwriter.
Him, Seger, Mellancamp and Knopfler all speak to me louder the older I get... they all write and sing about real life... none of this baby-baby-baby crap of the younger generation........true lyrics that speak to the soul.
Without a doubt this song is in my top 5 favorite Boss songs of all time. on top of that, i think this is one of the greatest music videos ever made. One long take, and Bruce is actually singing instead of lip syncing. pure magic from beginning to end.
"We stood at the altar The gypsy swore our future was right But come the wee wee hours Well maybe baby the gypsy lied" My favourite lines in this song.
I had a girlfriend back in 1985, who introduced me to The Boss. She was a big fan! I haven't listened to Bruce Springsteen in a long time. The immediacy of this song still impresses me.
@Bruce Springsteen 6-11-23 10 Pm. Unfortunately😠 I do believe I am currently living this song. You're coming to😳Pittsburgh Pa. 9-12 'n 9-14 I'm gonna try to be there if I can put some money together. These time's are hard Bruce, they're hard. 😎❤
diamond song. Bruce is so genuine. A tear in my eye turns as it sings, it moves all my senses, it makes shivers run through my body. This version is perfect. Bruc sitting with a guitar in his home kitchen is so usual, and at the same time amazing. Beautiful. Bruce forever, wherever you are, wherever you are
The one-take, slow zoom right into his face and eyes as he sings the words - a direct message. Can't imagine the feeling of this song and video referring to me directly.
Whenever you want to know the definition of a songwriter as "artist" look no further than here. I also really appreciate how The Boss does this video - with using the backing tracks of the album cut, but singing LIVE for the video recording. This is amazing and shows everyone his soul. Thank you, Bruce.
I'm not a huge Bruce Springsteen fan, especially his comments about the unjabbed, but I've always loved the Tunnel of Love album! This song and two others
It's just so impressive how Bruce can just sit there in an Old Officers Club with an acoustic guitar singing his heart out - no gimmicks, no camera movements, just a simple & very basic clip where the impact and power of the song shines through gimmick-free. Sure it's become a cliche, but his lyrics are just brilliant. Awesome work Bruce.
@@owenrees7544 Lol! Not sure, I guess I must have read/heard it somewhere that the clip was done in an Old Officer's Club?! Exactly what that is - don't ask me!! 😅

I hold you in my arms
As the band plays
What are those words whispered baby
Just as you turn away
I saw you last night
Out on the edge of town
I wanna read your mind
To know just what I've got in this new thing I've found
So tell me what I see
When I look in your eyes
Is that you baby
Or just a brilliant disguise
I heard somebody call your name
From underneath our willow
I saw something tucked in shame
Underneath your pillow
Well I've tried so hard baby
But I just can't see
What a woman like you
Is doing with me
So tell me who I see
When I look in your eyes
Is that you baby
Or just a brilliant disguise
Now look at me baby
Struggling to do everything right
And then it all falls apart
When out go the lights
I'm just a lonely pilgrim
I walk this world in wealth
I want to know if it's you I don't trust
'Cause I damn sure don't trust myself
Now you play the loving woman
I'll play the faithful man
But just don't look too close
Into the palm of my hand
We stood at the alter
The gypsy swore our future was right
But come the wee wee hours
Well maybe baby the gypsy lied
So when you look at me
You better look hard and look twice
Is that me baby
Or just a brilliant disguise
Tonight our bed is cold
I'm lost in the darkness of our love
God have mercy on the man
Who doubts what he's sure of

Yes, this one is amazing, as are the title track and "One Step Up." All of them seemingly dealing with relationships that are unravelling.
Perhaps we all wear "masks" at one time or another, even if we don't wish to. " Is that me baby, or just a brilliant disguise"?
@@a.leemorrisjr.9255 Hmm yesss An Alfred Hichcock in the making
So true
Today I feel exactly like Bruce once sang this, a final breakup, the phase of one life spent with the wrong person is ending, and I thank God that I have the ability to recharge my depleted energy with Bruce in songs. He doesn't even know what magical and powerful fluid he has in him, he didn't just get the gift of musical talent, movement on stage, he's mysterious, he's a magnet, I have a high respect for him with an open heart....thank you for keeping me afloat and not drowning. ..
Absolutely agree. He saved me
Thats some good writing right there.
"God have mercy on a man who doubts what he's sure of" Amen
The studio recording of the music was used in this video, but Bruce Springsteen is singing the vocal live in a hidden mic. This masterpiece gives me chills up and down my spine every single time I hear it.
He did the same thing on Streets of Philadelphia to great effect, singing into a hidden mic as he's walking through the streets of the city.
By using this technique it adds a lot to music video, giving it more emotional intensity and makes the personal themes of the song much clearer, something which conventional lip syncing would not be able to achieve.
A genius
“I’m just a lonely pilgrim, I walk this world in wealth” just one line but so descriptive. Brilliant lyrics
I want to know if it's you I don't trust cuz I damn sure don't trust myself...
One of Bruce's biggest hits and I think his most underrated song reached number 5 on Billboard pop singles chart in 1987
this is so a beautifully written song
so under rated.
hardly ever hear it on radio anymore
I remember the tunnel of Love, do you? That's how I know it's the real us
This is An 'amber baby eye
I think it is his most underrated song
This is my fav Springsteen track...those riffs...and the change of scale ... brilliant disguise indeed...
I remember hearing this song for the first time as a kid and being like, Wow!! He’s really hurt. Also, can we give credit to the director of this video??🔥🔥🔥
“So tell me what I see, when I look in your eyes...is that you baby, or just a Brilliant Disguise?...” Great song...Love this song...💯❤️🙌🏼

This song has been playing in the back of my mind for a very long time. Most of the time I don’t hear it, but when I do it really sticks out. But I’ve never really paid attention. Now that I have, I realize that it is a masterpiece on so many levels. Bruce, you are a poet!
Saw him on the Tunnel of Love tour in Sheffield, England.
I remember this like it was yesterday
Me too
I was there , still have ticket stub ! SUPERB CONCERT.
Me to ❤
This video shows that someone with true talent doesn't need giant special effects, over the top glitz, and massive instrumentation to captivate an audience.
Every time I hear this ...reminds me of the one woman in this life I truly loved ..my ex wife...took me long time in life to realise what I had and foolishly wasted ...for you Mo.x

The song beautifully summarizes what divorce feels like.
Still married to the same woman for 40 years but you can feel the pain one must feel from the words of this song.
Not only divorce, any painful breakup for that matter...
Exactly 😑❤️
Wow really a good song ..to bad for ya

God have mercy on a man who doubts what he’s sure of…simply soul crushing
This song does not get old. Had the pleasure of seeing him live back in the day. One of the very greats, no doubt!
I have a problem: i can't stop listening to this song. Masterpiece.

This whole album is a masterpiece.

@@margaret7504 Please see my comment relevant Super Bowl ad for Jeep by Bruce!
That's not a problem. He's the cure.
One of the most genuine artists in the history of American rock period.
This coming from one who isn't a great fan of his, but giving credit where credit is due.
You don’t know shit if you think he is genuine
@@InstantKaarma Why?Because his opinions differ from yours?
@@InstantKaarma what an odd comment
Ha... that's pretty much my top list right there!
@@DaveHaynie id also add Bryan Ferry and Morrissey
Agreed… Eddie vedder is a GENIUS .. Pearl ham are excellent
You have insane taste
It is Amazing how a song can have a so powerful narrative about life in such a way that resumes a very emotional tragic path!
Oh those intense eyes full of emotion coupled with the masterpiece of a song.......really the boss.......
Well said
I am saying that lyrics should be in every country school books as an example of perfect explanation of dead love, passion and lost but not forgotten fire between man and woman. God have mercy on those, who ommited to do this...
Many times, Springsteen is just telling a story, this is autobiographical, he lived this one.
That Lake Oswego Beauty Queen kicked his a**.
He cheated
"God have mercy on a man,
who doubts what he's sure of".
My faves to. ❤️❤️❤️
Mos def my fave Boss trax!
This is a song that made me buy the album; The album that shaped the rest of my life, a masterpiece to me.
Yes
Man, I got the privilege of living through the Beatles, the Stones, Bob Dylan and Springsteen. What a blessed life.
You and me both, 60's, 70's and early 80's was some epic music.
Amen.
Now what?
This was my wedding song. My husband passed to years ago. I listen and cry. Back to happy more happy times. ❤😊
❤❤❤
@@pajero0402 Thanks so much for liking my comment. My son and I absolutely love him. Problem now I cry listening. No handsome husband to dance and sing with. Miss him so much. ❤❤❤
This is not really a good choice for a wedding song at all😅. Read the lyrics, and you will understand why.
I can see the desire to have a Springsteen song but not even close to a wedding song. I’m sorry.
I like the song. I can’t help it though that I keep hearing Elvis’s Suspicious Minds when I listen to this song.
A true poet.
Amen brother....
All of his songs from this era/chapter of his life have exponential meaning and depth. Truly an introspective time in the life of The Boss- searching for reasons, and an understanding of answers given to questions that he himself didn't realize he asked
Johnny Ev master story teller
fantastic :-)
In my opinion this has to be the greatest video of all time! Just a man and his guitar, and heart on his sleeve... His emotions and body language match how I feel inside when I listen to this song... Bruce has a way to pull you in with pure honesty... Outstanding lyricist.
Giovanni Adrian truly... THE BOSS..
to me, a real cruiser
When there is no distinction to be made between the artist and the art, that is true art, or true humanity, or just TRUE
You are right....
Just your opinion.
You just have to look at his face to feel all the emotions
And the moon
I don't think this was just a performance for him. He wrote this because of life experience, and he wanted to share it with his fans. Well done.
He was mostly writing of his life experiences
When you look close and realize how an ordinary video becomes so EXTRAORDINARY and you just feel that the video did justice to a masterpiece!! Love you boss
He was singing from the heart. Great lyrics.
I was saying how he sings with passion. Yep, from the heart. He’s a legendary artist. Along with Roy Orbison, Prince, Tina so many. That we live at time to hear these great songs is awesome.
That’s why he’s the boss. Such a great song. “Maybe the gypsy lied”
And now we've got what? Drake?
@@CARVALHOALBORNOZ yeah he is one of the “best “ ones too. Doesn’t say anything good for the rest of todays music

Without a doubt this song is in my top 5 favorite Boss songs of all time. on top of that, i think this is one of the greatest music videos ever made. One long take, and Bruce is actually singing instead of lip syncing. pure magic from beginning to end.
The part from 2:00 “now look at me baby, struggling to do everything right!” Damn relatable...gets me every time
Way back in 1974, I was able to see this beautiful man sing, and I was hooked!
"We stood at the altar
The gypsy swore our future was right
But come the wee wee hours
Well maybe baby the gypsy lied"
My favourite lines in this song.
@Bruce Springsteen I would enjoy it! Please let me know the best way to reach you.
@Bruce Springsteen agreed.
diamond song.
This album is my favorite of all his albums. So many beautiful songs that have special meaning to me. This song in particular I played over and over.
Agree
The vocal track used in this video was captured live. The fact that he's not miming makes it more powerful.
Brilliant Bruce. The vocals are 100% live for this promo video. Brilliant Disguise is his Diamond amongst his many many gems. 👏🙏
A brilliant song from a brilliant artist there's no disguising that
I don't know who you are or what you are saying but I think you need professional help right now this a terrible meseage
Whenever you want to know the definition of a songwriter as "artist" look no further than here. I also really appreciate how The Boss does this video - with using the backing tracks of the album cut, but singing LIVE for the video recording. This is amazing and shows everyone his soul. Thank you, Bruce.
This is a "live" vocal set to the music of the studio. It's part of what makes this video so powerful.
True
I'm not a huge Bruce Springsteen fan, especially his comments about the unjabbed, but I've always loved the Tunnel of Love album! This song and two others
It's just so impressive how Bruce can just sit there in an Old Officers Club with an acoustic guitar singing his heart out - no gimmicks, no camera movements, just a simple & very basic clip where the impact and power of the song shines through gimmick-free. Sure it's become a cliche, but his lyrics are just brilliant. Awesome work Bruce.
what is an Old Officers Club?
@@owenrees7544 Lol! Not sure, I guess I must have read/heard it somewhere that the clip was done in an Old Officer's Club?! Exactly what that is - don't ask me!! 😅
One of my favorite songs of all time. Tunnel of Love may be my favorite album, too.
Thanks for the love and support . I decided to take out time today out of my busy schedule to get close to my fans and know their thoughts towards my career and I came across you through my official UA-cam CHANNEL insight...
I can’t get over the way this was so cleanly shot! Beautiful.
Do I see in this man, my hero, tears in his eyes in the end of this remarkable song?
"Tonight our bed is cold
Lost in the darkness of our love
God have Mercy on the man
Who doubts what he's sure of....."
Bruce Springsteen was going through a lot of pain when he was making this album. Losing his first wife
They were separating, he got with the female band member and married her, if you watch tougher than the rest song in concert on here you can tell what’s going on when they’re singing, I’ll just play it now
Left her.
Out of literally 1oo's of Boss songs this Has to be My favorite..."We stood at the alter, The Gypsy swore our future was right, But come the wee wee hours, Well maybe baby the gypsy lied!"...sheer pure right-on Poetry from the Master!
This song is fucking poetry. The twists are incredible.
from the first time i watched this i was struck by the pain shown, it really seems to come from the heart like all great songs
What can I say...he is an amazing singer, writer and this song just proves it again. Very talented. He is the Boss!
My all time favorite Bruce track. Taking nothing away from the rest of the utterly superb stuff, but this just meant so much to me when I first heard it. It was the story of my life at that precise moment in time.
Yes a precious moment in time................
The best song of all time!
To be honest I wasn’t a big fan of Bruce but this song changed all that now I can see he is really the Boss!!!
