    Good review. I will take over the cooling advice and baro overpressure seems now 4 meter off, can be improved.
    Nice (different) flying, your plot is a real nice Penguin island. Yep, stalls are very forgiving and gentle, only 5 meters height needed to recover. Let's fly it as a Penguin, not made for speed but use full sticks and a small area 😊

    looks like a good crop this season compared with european season suffering from huge amount of rain since mid of July. But your fields or those of the neighbours look quite well for early August

      Yeah they did pretty good this year, despite how hot and dry it's been. The corn is already cut, and the beans are getting dry.

    So I'm thinking move the CG way forward and set it up as a flying wing with an extra elevator. That way it will fly faster and be able to use a crow mix for slow flight. Does that sound reasonable?

    Shielded operations can be a lot of fun and pretty radically close to how a freestyle quad or a Shelby Voll might fly. But it is unfortunate how may planes I've broken working on inverted flight.

    Great overview. Like how was setup with good spacing of GPS, Tx, and video with lots of room to spare. Appears very maneuverable, with very tight turning radius, like a fighter. IMO, no need to do build video when all components have been covered before. The important points were related to (custom) setup and how it flys.

    Gotta inav question for you brother. When you set up the modes tab in inav do you combine autolevel with the cruise mode and angle mode or no? So when your in angle mode or cruise the autolevel is on at the same time?

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  Рік тому +1

      No, I have a 3-position switch set on a spare channel. In the middle it does nothing, one way turns on autolevel, the other way turns on autotune. I fly in angle mode, then switch on autolevel. I have that same 3-position switch set up in the modes tab to select one of two alternate OSD layouts. So when I turn on autolevel, it shows the pitch angle, climb rate, etc. at the bottom of the OSD. When I switch to autotune, it shows the PIDs for pitch and roll and I can watch them change as they're adjusted.

    • @eternalfpv9461
      @eternalfpv9461 Рік тому

      @bonafidepirate so you don't combine alt hold or anything with cruise or angle mode? I guess I'm asking should I fly with autolevel engaged when I'm just cruising around in angle or cruise

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  Рік тому +1

      @@eternalfpv9461 No, cruise is just cruise (does course hold and altitude hold) and angle is just angle (holds the plane level in pitch and roll axis, but doesn't actively work to hold a heading or altitude). I seem to remember earlier versions of inav needed to combine a couple things to get a true "cruise" mode that held heading and altitude. I'm not sure when it changed, but that's not the case now according to this - github.com/iNavFlight/inav/wiki/Navigation-modes#nav-cruise---fixed-wing-heading--altitude-hold Autolevel is a "modifier" that works on top of angle mode to adjust what the flight controller sees as "level" so there's minimal altitude gain or loss when flying level at a given throttle setting. You basically fly in angle mode at the same throttle you have set for cruise, enable autolevel, and don't touch the sticks for a bit. You'll see the altitude will eventually settle down and it won't climb or sink very much. At that point turn off autolevel and it should save. Then when switching between cruise and angle, the plane's pitch won't change, and it should fly pretty flat in angle mode at cruise throttle. It adjusts the "Board Trim (deg)" which is found on the mechanics tab of the PID Tuning page.

    Crossfire and 1.3GHz vid Tx? Isn't that going to reduce R/C range?

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  Рік тому

      I've paired 1.3 and 900 together in several planes with no bad side effects... lol Both Dragonlink 915 and Crossfire. I don't thing the vTX affects the receiver on the plane much if at all, and on the ground some video receivers can pick up noise from the R/C transmitter since they typically have a wide band that they'll receive, including 915MHz. In that case a bit of separation and some filters can work wonders. I use the Dragonlink filters on my video receivers.

    • @twinturbostang
      @twinturbostang Рік тому

      @@bonafidepirate That's good. Was just wondering because 910 MHz is close to 1280 MHz. I have tried to keep things on different bands so as to not interfere with each other.

    Pretty much every review of the Penguin seems to say the same thing about the throws, but none of the reviewers seem to be using it the way the shape of the wings suggest it should be used
    It's shaped like the F22 Raptor, and like the jet, should be capable of very tight turns, and with thrust management, flying outside of the normal purely aerodynamic operation - split throttles for lateral thrust vectoring, add in the ailerons to point the air blown over the wings up or down. Where you're flying under the trees, that's where it's supposed to live, chasing in and around obstacles and chasing friends flying the same.
    Rather then limit the rates by shifting the connections, it'd be interesting to limit them in the radio, with different flight profiles that can be switched between on demand.

    • @ApappieK
      @ApappieK Рік тому +1

      Yep, throttle differential could improve sharp corners.. But INAV seems not too happy to use throttle differential. Someday I will have to test this myself. 😊 I fly my Penguin with dual rates on the TX, 50% weight for start, landing and cruising and 100% for stick banging, the stalled elevator is my restriction.

    • @dronepilot260rc
      @dronepilot260rc 9 місяців тому

      More throws doesn’t always equal better flight characteristics. Definitely experiment with this on your planes. By moving to the hole closer to the servo. You are increasing the amount of torque applied to the surface while decreasing the amount wear on the servo.
      Put your elbow on a table and grab your wrist with your other hand and try to move it. Now leave your elbow on the table and grab the middle of your arm and try to move it 🎉

    No problem running a 915MHz RCRX with a 1.3GHz VTX?

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  Рік тому

      Nope, I've been using them together for a few years now, both Crossfire and Dragonlink 915MHz systems, alongside Matek, Partom, and Racewood video transmitters on 1280 an 1258. On the ground I do use filters on my video receivers, I'm not sure how much they're helping, I never flew without them when using 915. These - www.fpvpro.com/video-filter-12-ghz

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  Рік тому

      I did that on purpose, mostly because I'd forgotten to set fw_autotune_rate_adjustment to fixed so it didn't change the rates. Partly because I was too lazy to land, change it, and take off again before doing the autotune... lol I remember reading here that tuning in angle mode doesn't change the rates. github.com/iNavFlight/inav/blob/master/docs/Settings.md#fw_autotune_rate_adjustment

    how would you say this penguin compares to something like a t1 ranger?

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  Рік тому +5

      More power, slower, more agile and forgiving flying slow and tight around obstacles. More room inside too. For the longer "cruising" type flying I do I'd pick the Ranger, or even better the Swordfish first. I'd never fly those in the places I flew this one already though, with just 3 flights on it so far. lol I think they're different planes suited for different tasks.

    Mine came with dead servos…. I replaced them with reputable servos. Sucks to tear a plane apart before it even flies. I would not recommend this brand, they seem like they are in over their head with basic e commerce.

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  8 місяців тому +2

      I haven't had any issues with the Atomrc servos. I did end up replacing a motor on the Dolphin that wouldn't run smooth, it feels like it has a bad bearing. I kinda wanted to try a different one anyway. Other than that all the electronics have been fine.
