CX Racing Miata Turbo Kit Review : A Year Later
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 гру 2020
- My turbo Miata has been daily driven for over a year with the CXRacing turbo kit. I decided I would create this quick video going over the kit and how it has held up. I hope this will help a lot of you out, and feel free to leave any questions in the comments👍
Good to see a longevity review on the kit, I'm glad CX seemed to have redeemed themselves on that manifold
Legend spotted in the comments🤲
Just finished a throwback session of watching Broke and Boosted episode 6. For my NA-T budget SC300 build I was planning on using a CX Racing turbo manifold, and watching that episode made me reevaluate manifold choice for the 50th time since putting together a build outline, so naturally I type in "cx racing manifold test" and of course first comment I see is you. Wherever turbo Miata is mentioned I halfway expect to see you around, but the coincidence was still funny.
@@tomh2053 I do my best to get around 😂
@@TheCarPassionChannel I know you probably get this a lot, but even though I don't own a Miata, just the ability to apply information and ideas from your videos to other vehicles is super helpful, especially because of how detailed they are. And the improvement over the last 5 years in video quality has been incredible. You have inspired me to try to make a similar channel documenting detailed forum information in video format but for NA-T conversion for 2jz cars like the SC300, IS300, and GS300 since 2jz-gte's are getting too expensive to swap into them. But yeah man thanks for all you're doing for the car community and answering everyone's comments asking the same questions over and over and all that lol. Excited to see how the new stock head refresh performs :)
@@tomh2053 That's what I like to hear!
See you again in a year!
the only reason a miata is going to be my first car is bc of this series man loving it
The only car I know of that gets more undeserved hate than the miata is the Porsche Boxster. Both get called "hairdressers cars" or "secretaries cars" by people who have never sat behind the wheel of one and realized that they are street legal go karts. I spent a decade in the highline car sales industry, I have lots of seat time in 6 figure price tag cars. You'll never have as much fun a an exotic on the street as you will with a Miata or a Boxster and if you try it's only a matter of time before the police chase and subsequent arrest when the fun is over.
Do you want to work the hell out of your Miata transmission or do you want to never get your 911 GT2 out of 3rd gear?
Miata is a good beginner car ,you gonna love it even a 1.6
I had a very similar rig so sharing my experience: the vent holes in your front bumper are actually creating less flow through the intercooler. I tried that also but found it was venting air OUT instead of IN. Weird aerodynamics. When I was driving track days, the intake temp would rise and EMS would retard timing. After installing a shroud over the holes to help direct air in, the temps dropped significantly. Contact me if you have any questions. Great job on the build. 👍
glad you’re still doing car stuff! i was afraid after selling your e36, maybe you were going the family route and got a minivan or something. it’s cool to see the dream didn’t die, but was reborn into something new. when i get my 323is back together, i might have to throw a bomber face on it out of tribute lol. you rock man keep it up
Chiming in. I've had a CXRacing kit on my 97 MX5 since 2018. I daily'd it for a while, ran it hard on weekends, and basically every time i take it out.. and a few hundred mile road trips.
The ONLY things Ive changed from the CXRacing kit, is the exhaust manifold gasket (new OEM multilayer is better), dremmel'd out the WGA hole to fix boost creep (Thank you Greg AKA CarPassion) and made my own turbo flange gasket. The Downpipe fit perfect, the manifold was welded nicely and has had no cracks. Its been on 15PSI this whole time, and everything has still held up (knock on wood) around 250whp/240wtq.
The "V2" kit (mine) was definitely WAY BETTER than the original they put out. I heard nothing but bad things on the version 1.
Love it Austin ❤️ keep the uploads coming
Hell yeah austin glad it wasnt a year before i saw you again!!!!
But may i say the miata sounds better then i ever thought it would!! Keep the good work up man!!
Thanks and it's insane just how much of a sound difference a turbo makes on a Miata.
Nice man! Good to see you back, lookin fresh
I have cxracing turbo kit 3years on my dc5 ..made 435hp first dyno session stock k20a2 then 1year later I upgrade to k24/k20 and make 560hp stock engine... And I have had no issues almost 4yrs and still counting.... Good kits for the buck or for a budget build...
Hey man I’m looking into boosting my 02 dc5 really been considering this kit happy to read that you’ve had no problems. Have you ever had any problems with the manifold, turbo or intercooler I hear the manifolds cheap the turbo is not name brand so can’t be trusted and the intercooler had an inefficient design also what size turbo did u get I’m thinking about there gt35. Thx if u reply really looking into this kit
I love this build
Funny, Cleetus just uploaded a video of him buying a Miata.
Cx kits are pretty good my old sr20 was make 400 hp on low boost with the 240sx gt35 kit.
yea i’d love to see them add a bong to this kit too.
🤣
Love your review very informative your car amazing as well good job on the build
For everyone asking about engine management, my advice is buy a used MS2PNP ecu which you can find for around 500 bucks. I then spent another $500 on a dyno tune. But its awesome
This is perfect!! I'm about to tackle my miata with a cx kit (different turbo) and I came across this video. New subscriber!!
Austin, first and foremost I like the look of your miata. I just purchased a gas saver miata, and Ive wanted another turbo car to play with so I have been looking up turbo kits and this video pretty much just makes me want to buy the CX racing kit opposed to the MK turbo kit.
I have a 1.6 turbo kit for sale in Central Florida $1600 comes with a megasquirt pnp 2 ecu as well. Cx racing manifold and turbo, hood exit exhaust, complete piping and intercooler, GM IAT, BMW VTPS, tapped oil pan etc.
Wow beautiful car 🚗 you really have the build/tune going on!! Enjoy 😉
Very cool. Also nice to see some of the big UA-cam Miata players commenting as well.
Decent video. Enjoyed it
So dope can’t wait to turbo my yata
Speed holes look very good on your Miata!
I dream that my miata is turbod like this one day!
Me too 😝
My guy is back !
This is a great video. For me, u covered the most important part of the kit which was the manifold. I actually plan on doing what u did and buying a better turbo rather than sporting the shitty CXracing's turbo.
A year?? Glad you back
Yearly uploads ... kewl
Very nice and fast daily driver Austin. I love Miata's a lot. Do you know Taylor Ray's channel? Dutch regards, Nico.
BOV is supposed to open under vacuum tho...and I hope it stays closed under boost...
Ugggh I wish I would have seen this video back when I had my NA
Aye nice video man that thing looks good sounds good I’ve been looking at that kit for mine I’d like to see who’s would be faster i got the 1.8
Are you running a stand-alone ecu?
What's the status of the CXRACING turbo kit? Was looking at that kit as well
I purchased the MKturbo kit. All the parts haven’t arrived yet so I’ll have to wait a little.
Hey quick question, what did you do as far as engine management/ECU tuning?
I think i may want to get one of these kits for my NB
Yesss!
good morning, sunshine. see you in 2022
That's awesome! I'd love to eventually turbo my 1993 Miata. What suggestions might you have if I'm going from stock to getting it ready for turbo?
This really helped
Super sick build, did you install an afr and boost gauge as well? Trying to figure out wiring of all that stuff currently
Thanks, and yes I went with a AEM X-Series one. Also, the wiring is super simple in a Miata. I installed it in the eyeball vent and used the cigarette lighter for power, ran a ground to the engine block, and the O2 signal goes to the stock O2 wire.
Hey man love the Miata. As someone who owns both a NA Miata and E36 M3 I'm curious which car you enjoy going sideways more in?
It's E36 all day, I love a Miata but they just have too much chassis grip. At the end of the day an E36 wants to drift and Miata you have to force to be a second best.
Yes !!
Hey man, I own a 1991 NA6 Miata and am trying to Turbo it soon I'd love to have a chat about it if you got the chance?
Liked your video hope it's that easy lol!!
Unrelated question: do you have stock paint? It looks kinda like soul red. Mine has been repainted before and it looks shit :P
What are you running for engine management and clutch?
Hey man I’m really happy you made this video cause I’m looking to get this kit for my 1.6. I have a few questions about it. What turbo did you put on it? Does it fit with all the A/C stuff? And do you have injectors?
I'm glad to hear that! As for your questions, it has a t04e with a .60 turbine housing (I'd recommend searching for the .48 version though) and I'm not sure about A/C because my car never had it (I'm not sure how it's laid out in a Miata). The car also has 420cc yellow RX8 injectors, which are cheap and one of the most popular options.
@@austinferguson5504 thank you for the response! I’ll check those out
I am in the process of installing this same exact kit on my miata. Did you tune the ECU yourself or did you take it to someone? If you did tune it yourself, how hard was that and can you make a video on it?
nice to see another video (so soon) :D
are you going to buy another e36? and what are your plans with this channel?
prob not
What oil lines are you running? Did you remove the pan or drill and tap the pan?
what exhaust is that🤣🤣 i love that
i had the welds crack on mine, luckily they replaced the manifold 3 weeks later but it was a hassle considering it cracked DURING the dyno tune so i had to go back and get everything tuned again because it was way off with the exhaust leak I had. i ended up removing power steering because it was such a huge pain in the ass to install. overall i do not recommend this kit even the intercooler piping was a joke. luckily i had a youtuber promo code and paid like 1800 for everything
Where you order a couple racing kit
Dont have this kit but building a similar setup. Curious to what ecu you are running and if it is a completely stock motor. My setup is isr2860, megasquirt pnp and gtr r35 550cc injectors im super pumped to get it running but also worried at the sametime any feed back is appreciated!
Come on austin u need to get uploading more, uswd to love your videos but you hardly put any up anymore 😔
Priorities, time, money and motivation could be the reason. I think he knows what works for him, how often he wants to upload.
do you remeber the bolt size for the oil feed and oil return lines when they connect to the turbo. That’s the last thing i need to do on my car but i don’t know what size they are
Nice to see the Miata again. Any plans for another BMW?
Just found this video because I've been seriously contemplating this kit for the longest time. One question I do have is did you get different lines and fittings? I saw that the fitting for the oil pan needs to be done by dropping the oil pan (Donut Media). I wanted to see if that could be avoided. Also what different turbo are you running?
What Ecu are you running ? Literally Just order the CX Kit.
How much for this turbo kit? Thanks!
What did you need OUTSIDE of the kit to complete the build and get on the road?
Injectors, ecu, wideband, boost gauge.
What turbo size and brand is that ? Since you said in the vid you’re running a different turbo. I have the same kit but for a 1.8L but the turbo that comes with doesn’t spool very well
What diff are you running on your miata?
It's a 1.6 vlsd that I had welded. I'm currently looking to upgrade to a 1.8 diff, but it has been a bit difficult to locate everything so far.
Is that turbo the ole Turbone? 😂 my buddy runs one on his e30. And I was thinking about getting one for my 318ti as I’m going to be turbocharging it around spring time. Spooling at 4K is very impressive for the little 1.6!
What ecu you running ?
Did u do a headgasket and arp studs or is ur engine stock?
It's completely stock, the only thing I really plan on doing is pulling the head for a refresh. I'm going to just throw in a new oem headgasket, lifters, and valve seals.
I came here to find someone else asking the same question so thank you
Thanks for the video. Definitely looking into this kit. What do you think is a realistic budget to have for turboing a completely stock miata , (including whatever supporting mods you think are necessary such as the radiator). Thanks!
Long time no replies might not help anymore but honest to God you're looking at anywhere from 4-6k on the reasonable end. Depends on what kit you go with, what supporting mods you choose etc. But that's about what you're looking at. Keep in mind you'll need a better clutch, radiator, standalone ECU, a tune, heat wrap if you're gonna do it right, factor in labor cost if you're not gonna do it yourself, things of that nature. If you're not already on a wheel and tire you're REALLY gonna need that too. I'm on 225s rn no turbo and I will be going to at least a 245 before I turbo my car. (Running 15x9s no spacers, rolled fenders if that helps). Maybe go to 16s and do spacers or something of the nature for tire availability and options.
So how does the downpipe fit as far as clearance with the little shelf under the break booster? Or did you have to cut off the half inch there is on the edge before the bulkhead underneath it?
It clears perfectly, so there's no need for any cutting. It also has a flex joint in it which helps line everything up and prevent stress cracks. I hope this helps.
Hey what kinda ecu are you using, I would like to see more about how the car has been turbo’d and what kinda power the car is making, also has anything been done to the motor, is it completely stock or at least studs and a good head gasket?
I'm running a DIYPNP2 I built, and the engine is completely stock. I plan on making more content about the specifics and progress of everything as I mess with it. It's currently running 8psi at around 180whp according to virtualdyno. I was running it at 10psi until the clutch started slipping (which I'm lowkey waiting for the weather to warm up to replace).
@@austinferguson5504 super cool, my friend just got a miata and I’ve been trying to convince him to do something like what you’ve done, I would love to see more videos on the project, from what I’ve seen so far, the car looks fun af
great build man! did you use a standlone ECU? if so what was it?
I have an nb2 miata. And there are two cx racing turbo kit options. One makes 250-300 and one makes 300-350. Is the only difference the turbo size? Therefore you are only sacrificing spool time with the bigger turbo?
Did your kit come with the hardware to mount the turbo to the manifold? Mine didn't and I'm not sure what to use.
Any motor work or did you just slap the kit on it an go? What hp is your car putting to the wheels? What did the kit run ?
Hey dude - did you get it dyno tuned? can you share the dyno sheet? I'm considering getting one vs. a kswap, but wanted to compare mid range torque for the fun of daily driving...
no coolant reroute need ;)
I have a 1991 I want to buy the kit should I buy turbo injectors?
How do you get it tuned to run correctly after turbocharging a engine? Do you get it done by someone locally?
can you add a link to the description!?
You have any plans of getting a nother e36 ?
Version 2.0 yellow?
That's the gameplan, just waiting to finish my last bit of college so I can move and start making BMW moves. I plan to scoop another e36 sedan or may step up to an e46 since e36 prices are starting to skyrocket.
@@austinferguson5504
Keep the good videos up down....
here in New Jersey nj the prices you can buy one for a cheap price in good condition for one.
Hey where did u get the turbo that bolts up to that manifold, and curious how u made 10 psi and I seen someone with the same kit but could only get 4 psi
What turbo blanket did you go with?
Still have a/c and power steering or no? And if so did you have to do anything crazy to get it to stay in the car?
My car never had A/C, but I do have power steering. I can't really speak for A/C, but the kit works with power steering without any issues (I wish I could be of more help).
👍 what did you do as far as fuel management ecu to tune it?
I think you had more fu in the e36
I think you're right.
What Frontbumper you have there ?
It's a stock one with some goofy holes in it to help cooling.
@TheCarPassionChannel what color is that miata?
You mentioned reliability. What about flyin miata?
Did you head stud it? Also what clutch are you running?
Do you work on these? If someone brought you a 91 with CX racing turbo kit you could bring up to level of your car and you get paid?
how about ECU?
Bro can I ask if u can use csx on road because on the website they said only for track use
what’s the hp different from stock?
Did your kit come with waterlines ? If not , are you running any ?
Is it hard to put a turbo for someone who doesn't have any experience with cars?
Any supporting mods need besides megasquirt?
How much did you spend on everything? have you dynod it?
im thinking about buying a miata and i want to turbocharge it. how easy is this kit to install by yourself??
Did u did any engine preparation as in timing belt oil pan gasket and such. Or did u just slapp it on and thug life it lolz
What turbo are you using? Looks similar to the mkturbo one
