GB Studio - Artwork Intro

  • In this video I go over how I make my artwork for GB Studio.
    Everything I use is free, it is all simple software, perfect if you're starting out.
    I start by showing you the GB Studio documentation at www.gbstudio.d...
    This is where all the information is on making backgrounds for your game, like the colours you should use, the dimensions and the tile size.
    I then show you GIMP, the photo editor I use, find it here at www.gimp.org/
    I show you how you should set up the file so that you can see the grid.
    Then I move onto things you should be thinking about when you are making your artwork, like repeating tiles and starting with simple place holders.
    I then show you an example tile sheet that you would then take into Tiled, found here: thorbjorn.itch...
    In Tiled you can easily turn your tile sheets into game maps ready for GB Studio!
    I hope you found this tutorial useful. I tried to go over as much as I could so if you're starting out you have an idea of how others make their artwork.

    Another great video, I already knew this but it's a good resource for real beginners.
    Also I have a suggestion, or more so me asking for tips on how to get a certain thing to work. I've been toying around with the idea of Strategy Combat in the style of Fire Emblem and Advance Wars. I know the gameboy hardware is definitely capable of doing it (see Super Robot Taisen as an example) but I'm having a lot of difficulties getting the selection and movement of units right. Everything is extremely clunky as is right now and it appears no one else has covered this topic from what I've been able to search. There was one guy who was making a Fire Emblem-esque game but his game suffers from a lot of the issues my prototype has as well so I haven't been able to gleam much useful info from it.

      Yeah although some things are possible on Game Boy, they were created by teams on professional programmers so some of them were able to do some truly magical things! I haven't tackled any systems using grid based combat yet, so it would be very clunky for me too I'm sure, hopefully when the newest version on GB Studio is released it becomes easier! I will keep that in mind though and make a video on it when I can, thank you for watching the video!

      @@RobertDoman Most definitely, thanks for the input regardless. If you can't come up with something don't worry too much about it. GBStudio is still a relatively new engine and there's a lot of features that could still be added to it. Looking forward to new videos from you regardless.

    I'm curious, what did you make your grid size? I made mine 16 by 16, just like yours, however I end up with about for blocks and some change. What am I missing?

      I made mine 8x8, that's the tile size that the Game Boy works with
      Also make sure there are no margins!

    How do you put in the whole artwork? I'm doing a game and I already have the title screen thingy and I'd like to know how to put in the program.

    • @RobertDoman
      @RobertDoman  2 роки тому

      Export the image you created for the background as a PNG.
      Then move the PNG into the backgrounds folder of the game and then you should be able to select it and use it in engine

      I'm sorry to hear that, I have a few videos involving Tiled. There are two parts to it, creating and uploading the tileset to Tiled, and then creating new maps from the tilesets, which part are you getting stuck at?

    • @DracoTheNinja
      @DracoTheNinja 8 місяців тому

      @RobertDoman it is with setting up tiled, when I make a new project I see no change. But the file is there and if I open that file with tiled nothing happend. But I think I found out what was wrong
