  • Adding a USB Ethernet adapter to a smart phone may allow you to use it as an Internet modem to feed the WAN port on your Router.
If you lose your main internet, you may be able to backfeed the router's WAN port by attaching a USB network adapter to the USB-C port on the android phone.
Look for the setting menu for "mobile hotspot and tethering". Under there, you may have an option for "Ethernet Tethering". This will allow your phone to behave in the same way your ISP modem does.
In this video, I added a @dell 1G USB-C Network adapter to my ‪@SamsungUS‬ Galaxy FE20 and was able to connect it to my Router's WAN port.
The Dell Network adapter used in the video can be found here:

Freaking amazing! You saved my office! It does not work direct to the computer, it does not work direct to a switch -- it does work direct to the WAN port of a router! Thank you Thank you a thousand thank you! Cable internet went down, we are back up on this Frankenstein.

Thank you soo much! I use to do an old school version of this by tethering to my pc via USB and then sharing the internet connection of my ethernet adapter. It would work, but there were problems. First, you had to have a PC on all the time for the connection. Second problem was with online gaming with consoles, there was always a NAT issue. Also, you would have to edit the IPv4 settings in windows to try and clone what the router was giving to the network. Then you would have even more issues if you had devices with a static ip. It could be a hassle, especially if it was only a temp setup. But this was like magic. I didn't realize the new settings for tethering were built in to 5G phones. Honestly, I'm getting about 75% of what I would get with My ISP. I wonder how long this will run stable. I've been running rock solid for an hour now and everything is working, even my Alexa and smart devices that have security tokens. One more thing I'm only getting 3 bars because of the placement, If I get a longer cord and bring the phone to the window, I might get the same or better than my ISP. Sorry for the "Dear John", but this really is a game changer for me and I wanted you to know how much I appreciated your tutorial. I'm using a Samsung Note 20 ultra 5G and a TP-Link AX3200 router with a generic USB-C ethernet adapter/USB hub from Amazon that I bought for an old Android tablet I use to have.👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 (gentleman's whiskey clap)

That laptop is probably limited by the Wireless card or the ethernet port that comes with it. You can use a usb adapter to get higher speed for latter case. Or replace the wireless card to something faster while also being supported by your device.

    • @NetworkAdvisor
      @NetworkAdvisor  5 місяців тому

To be candid, once the internet IP traffic is handed off from that network adapter attached to the mobile phone, I don't think it really makes much difference.
I'm not an experienced RV'r, but if I had to guess, I would think space-saving and low energy consumption would be preferable. There are lots of mainstream (net gear, dlink, linksys) router/switch/wifi combo units that are smaller than a VHS tape.
Thanks for the questions. Good luck k.

My phone doesn't have wireless charging and I would rather avoid it anyway as it just makes the device hotter, so I'd be interested if someone has an ethernet adapter that also charges the phone. It doesn't need fast-charging; just regular 5V is fine for this application as it's just keeping it topped up.

      1. some people have commented that an OTG driver should be added to the phone (I have no idea how to do that or exactly what that is)
      2. is is possible your mobile provider doesn't allow hotspot traffic from a ethernet tethered connection? (that phone in the video is using Google Fi service)

Will using this method burn through data very fast on a cellphone plan?

Yes and there’s usually a very low data limit. You’ll be lucky if you’ll get anything above 5 gigs of mobile data before the feature becomes unusable

This was kinda demonstrated for the purpose of creating a backup internet connection while your main one is down.

Buy an older router, flash openwrt on it and change the ttl and it will use your phones data not hotspot.

hey mate i want to give your commission, but i do not trust the link you post (it's not you, it's me). if you have a promo code etc that i can use - so you get the benefit of the affiliate link that may perhaps be of benefit to you, while also not costing me anything, apart from the effort of typing it in. which i'm happy to do.

That's really thoughtful mate, but no worries. The affiliate commissions are trivial. But, it was nice that you were smart enough to recognize that. ☺

@@NetworkAdvisor ok so I worked out the solution. Log in to Amazon first, and THEN click the link. Now you're safe from phishing.
