So you can share your phone's mobile data over the wired lan.

Is OpenWRT necessary? There are routers that work with USB modems out of the box.

Yes, they are, but they work with modems, not phones. They both connect via USB, but they use a different protocol, so this won't work on most routers with stock firmware

There are two ways. use USB to ethernet controller for your phone, and connect it by twisted pair. or share internet on your phone using wifi. like hotspot. and connect it to virtual wifi on router. But router must also support virtual wifi sid. In second case you could charge your phone when it sharing internet.
