Styrofoam Dome Home Becomes A Derelict Biodome - Is It Too Durable?

  • This styrofoam home is actually a rocket scientist's expanded polystyrene laboratory... Yes, you heard me right this thing is made of styrofoam; we’ll get to the rocket science portion in a moment. While this sounds strange to many westerners, it’s a common building material in places such as; Asia.
Locally it's referred to as the Geo-Dome, short for “Geodesic dome”. People who can remember it before the current coat of paint often called it the “R2D2” building. Due to its former resemblance to the robotic character from the Star Wars movies. However; this building is neither an homage to R2D2 or one of Buckminsterfuller's famous dome designs...

A very unusual find. The material sounds like a strange choice, but for certain purposes, it probably makes a lot of sense. It's unfortunate you were not able to gain access and have a look around. Would be interesting to see if it is all on one level or of it has floors within the domed area. Nice video!

I lived in the apartments next to this in the springs and it’s a drug house now. People in and out, walking the lot. Windows always getting busted out. Cars broken down in the lot. Cool building though. I’d love to see what the inside looks like now.

I would build something like this where there are earthquakes, and where it's also cold & windy. It's strong and lightweight, which is good against earthquakes and wind, as well as being insulative against cold.

@@DerelictDoug I think the outer surface layer was the weakest thing. They needed some kind of hardened cement layer to cover the outer surface. Perhaps a cement loaded with crushed glass (or glass beads) or some suitably hard material could have been used to create a strong surface layer.

Resealed in olive green cement and wrapped in vines the doorway and other key features will profit enormously on the aesthetic front each framed by tall cedars to either side ( or some similarly tall pointed tree ) . Think Hagia Sophia in Istanbul It wrote the book on this kind of architectural counterpoint .
A circumferential planter waist high is a next most logical finess to this structure's form Geometry and Counterpoint .
Reworking the doorway as an asymmetrical all glass and slim metal framing ( male right angles and straight lines ) Cartesian composition ...will sharpen the focus in counterpoint to female round dome Geometry ❤ !!

why not try to interview them, or at least the seller/owner-representative managing the leasing?
    - could be a more informative view on why it's gone downhill, if styro-construction is supposed to be so much better.
    > why not put a sealcote & use the existing dome as a form for cement layer/durability & amp the longevity?
    -maybe a sequel ?

    • @DerelictDoug

I've worked with this group in another situation and am not looking to interview them. Trust me it would be a waste of time. They have little interest in the up-keep of the property, rather they only care about property vacancy. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and all the best!

1:03 "...phone handy..." beg my pardon, but have you spend a longer period in German spoken countries or have you been amongst native german speakers? They tend to call a cellphone or smartphone as a "handy". Just curious. Like your channel!

    • @DerelictDoug
      @DerelictDoug  5 років тому +2

Hahaha, very good point. I am good friends with native speakers. But this was a slip of the tongue. I actually have a good story about a Swiss friend who moved to the states and went around asking where he could get a “handy” (which in that context is a very different thing). Handy is also used in the states to mean something that is readily available to use. I should have thought that one through. Thanks for pointing it out. And thank you for watching 🙏

    • @reallychadical

Having something "handy" did not originate from German-speakers. It's an native English phrase, as in:
