When they hear the word “Styrofoam”, most people think about disposable food containers or packaging material, but for one Japanese modular home manufacturer, it is the building material of the future. Its increasingly popular Styrofoam dome houses are highly earthquake-resistant, super cheap and quick to build, and have very high thermal insulating properties. What’s not to like?

If the government backed this company and made them on a large scale it would the price down significantly too, Things like this are needed for people trying to get on the property ladder, cheap affordable housing, so many people can't afford their own homes and have to rent horrible places they can never truly call home.
But the land price still would be the first problem..
No mention of Fire Rating . Styrofoam is flammable and while all surfaces are coated with a cement based 'plaster' that gives it rigidity and limited fire protection, the Styrofoam material is vulnerable even if you add fire retardant chemicals to slow down the spread of fire. Also these Domes should be properly weighed down and anchored to a rather heavy slab and reinforced to resist winds as they can distort and tear off foundations in high winds.
Otherwise it is a sensible design but with limitations as mentioned .
How would these houses hold up against hurricanes
Cheap!? 74k for a tiny dome!?
its already better then 200k regular house who is not that big either and have all the annoying problem of maintenances
Just did a quick search, and hey, it says that EPS (styrofoam) are recycleable
I don’t know how many percent of the EPS waste is being recycled, or if the byproduct is as durable as it is before being recycled,
But it would be cool if EPS wastes can actually be recycled for house materials such as for these dome houses, that would probably help solve the environmental waste issues
@@terrytwocakes Just drop the old styrofoam in to a pan of acetone :P
Japan earthquake-proof homes yay!
Tsunami: HELLO!
Or typhoon...
Lol
A tsunami can affect any structure regardless of the building material.
A very smart plan this thing makes me more love the country of Japan. Konichiwa💖
I want one I live in Alaska and that looks so cosy and nice😍😍😍
When your safe from earthquake but not from typhoons.💥
Dragon Ball anyone? 😂😂
First thing I thought of haha.
Toriyama patent XDD
I'm gonna connect 2 or 3 together and put it under a hill for my own hobbit home...
they should have 3 sizes and the huge shoould be able to fit a winnebago, with interconnects just like planetbase
Bonus points if you build it in Matamata, New Zealand
I don't think they are that strong under the weight
Japanese architecture feels like it came from the future
a plastic future...
An ugly, rounded, homogenous future
and you'd be surprised, they learned this from the Native Americans who lived in America before the Europeans came over
Hehehe looks like homes from Dragon Ball
Your thumbnail is of MONOLITHIC DOMES IN TEXAS!!!!!
Se ven muy comodas y bonitas
Olá.
Essas residências no formato de cúpula ou domo são muito bonitas. Parabéns aos projetistas. Abraço! Rio de Janeiro Brazil
I like Japan very much
Earthquake proof..... Is this fire proof also?
I want one!
To Kevin: Thank you. When you focus on one aspect, the other comes along a the speed of a typhoon. Weird weather, wind, and water would wither the ways of seminality. :
Love the idea but 70k that's a big thumb's down
That's cheap in Japan. Problem is Land.
William Hoeweler exactly all about greed even when it’s all profits they take the piss on Costs. How much can it cost to produce?
Durable, but not flame resistant.
Would take like 5 minutes to burn down from electrical short circuit.
Umm, no thanks.
The toxic smoke from a styrene fire would kill you before you had a chance to escape.
We need to adopt this type of construction everywhere.
3:23 those domes are not located in Japan. They are actually in brenham Texas. I am about to sign a contact to live in them by this time next year.
How's your new house?
Did it work out? Would to know if you enjoy the new home!
i did spot a pick up truck on the right
There are a lot of advantages of Styrofoam. It's light weight, sky high thermal insulation qualities, sound proof and can be moulded on site. It's main weaknesses is it's flammable, very toxic when it burns and no technology exists yet to recycle it. An alternative might be air entrained spray on concrete (gunite)with hemp fibers in it. It may not be as light weight as Styrofoam but it's light enough not to have sympathetic occolations with an earthquake like regular concrete and stone. Air entrained Gunite would have some thermal insulating qualities thanks to air bubble layer. Hemp fibers or it's alternative would lend reinforcement
They already implement inflamable coating
Is it also storm proof?
It looks like an eskimo iglu.
a step further to the capsule house of dragon ball
One typhoon and they all fly to next country lol
Can this be built elevated,.so not only earthquake proof but also anti-flood house?
Where can you buy this, I don't see any links
it's light and dome shaped. so what happens when one of those cat 5 typhoons passes through?
Or large hail...
But what about making it through a typhoon ? I'm not sure they can
Kevin Clements maybe it just floats away
Towns People
XD
Its a dome, maybe the wind would flow around it? Might need a few tweeks to the design, but you could test it out by 3D printing some models and then aiming a blower hose at them.
Kevin Clements iiok
They are perfect for typhoons. They are fixed to the ground, strong and the dome design distributes any pressure evenly. They are fully approved by the Japan Land and Transport ministry, tested and proven.
Probably will be okay. No wind resistance it can withstand higher winds. Aerodynamics.
Everyday assets, realizations and purchasing power are applicable through this types of environment friendly products, while quality/quantity are realized, at par with the economic growth from preserved standards in GDP. Haik Japan!' Qui lai! Quo ah juliang.! SMEs........
i first saw these in japan sinks
What about hurricane winds - will they be blown away? Plus Styrofoam is highly flammable - fire hazard.
same question on hurricanes/typhoons but I haven't found any testing evidence
Why don't they employ these in Haiti as well as how do they undergo tornadoes which have been struck in Haiti
What about high winds?
what about a drunk dude with a small stick?
What about researching before you post stupid questions? Thsy are fireproof, stronger than wood and tested and approved for typoons, earthquakes ,anti mould etc.
I don't think they'd fair well in a Typhoon...
👍👍👍😁
Can you make that cheaper. perfect for poorer countries but the price is too high you can buy a moderate house for that price
But love the design
what about breathing the fumes in that emit from the styrofoam
What about acetone rain?
What is the price of this house? Build and repair
Hmmm 74k still a bit too much
And if you spill gasoline on it you'll have a hole in the wall.
Jutty Turtle I'm sure that could be resolved
Hey Einstein, it`s not the same as packing foam, and it`s rendered with cement . Moronic comment.
But what are the disadvantages?
hot af in the summer
sock sock Gasoline.
you can poke a hole in them with a sharp stick
....It`s MADE of insulating material....
If you have nail polish remover your house won't exist
what happens when someone pushes his finger through the "wall"
Typhoon resistance ?
_ I'LL TAKE A DOZEN __________________ JAPANESE ARE VERY GOOD AT WHAT THEY DO ______
Majin buu?
I'm gonna buy me a good pice of land some day and I want one of these homes on it
Who knows it might float
Why I dont know this? I live in Japan...
Im from Malaysia.. How i get this. That so awesome..
How about out gassing?
it's like Goku's house in Dragon Ball.
Hahaha yes !
Aren't those the same houses of Dragon Ball?
Ricardo yes
are we talking $177 to $202.84 a square foot finished or unfinished?
Its gonna suck for them if it ever rains acetone
I knew this was a lie when I saw the American f250 truck
it's texas
But is it tornado, flood, fire, mold proof too?
52msdiane,there is no place for wind too back up against. They are not total foam, they have a mixture of concrete and foam. They are sturdy homes.
I hope we also have this in the philippines. Just like japan, we are also earthquake prone.
well they used to have paper houses so I guess styrofoam isn't to far off...
what a great solution ! the Japanese are very smart people -
This technology could could revolutionize space colonization.
why?are there many earthquakes in space?
Google Is Evil no I'm referring to the low cost and ease of construction.
Like a cardboard box... I know where you're coming from but styrofoam isn't some kind of wonder material it's very polluting and possibly carcinogenic, there are better alternatives.
You can make Styrofoam out of renewable materials. Hell you can even make edible Styrofoam. Also as the video states, this isn't normal Styrofoam but a specially formulated material similar to Styrofoam.
stryrofoam is a brand man, you can't make it any other way than it's meant to be made...anyway that stuff will never work in space, but it does spacey I guess that's what made you say it.
What about fire? Isn't Styrofoam highly flammable? So, no cooking, bbq in, out, near house? No smoking too?
Does it give off toxic fumes? How does it stand up to house fires? After Japan's Nuke plants history I think that thry better stick to building cars and forget structures.
Its the dome shape that makes it strong,,plus It looks like its covered with concrete,,
Btw in US there are houses made of polystyrene panels, also,,these are reinforced wire mesh to make them HURICANE winds RESISTANT see www.tridipanel.com
the problem is the tsunami how can they stand that?i never saw a tsunami proof houses
These with do nothing for a tornado or fire.
Luck for the thieves...
Abir Alvi Japan doesn't have many of those
What happens if earthquakes?
how the F do you buy one in the US
yeah.. Styrofoam.. you don't have to bother locking the door..
Thanks
This type of house is not suitable for countries that also have tornado, typhoon and hurricane.
it's too damn expensive... 75k dollar can buy really nice apartment
What is the price of this house? Build and repair
Im afraid of fire
Just build a yurt then.
It's not bullet proof....I would rather have a cement dome.
How about fire?
Dragon ball design
it's fucking small!!
Beautiful idea
Dragon ball
If God judgement what ever how good they make the house they are destroy because It's is written.

Im sure your infomation is good however its Too hard to understand you.
First one to watch this!
Animedogs 3152 nice
Animedog well you win a like :)
Thank you!
Styrofoam is bad for the environment, a total ban could put some businesses out of business, they would then be free to start another business, Styrofoam free, or continue using this polystyrene plastic, harming, no, killing the environment without any known repair option, permanently damaging it, never to return to a life as is currently known here on earth, this green like healthy planet, with all life on it, praying, rest in peace…
But would they stand up to Fat man and Little boy ,?
Ok this is stupid
:D
Cool vid, lots of learning buuuuuut! These houses are flammable as heck, if any flame gets near and touches more than ten seconds because of the coating they will burst into flame. Plus the toxic gas from the styrofoam might not seem to effect you it will. And even if you opened everything up you would still have heaps of CO2 in there and would be very light headed and could die. Plus the fact that if any thing hit it of if it rained it might chip away. Don't forget the freakin cost. That should be a concrete dome not styrofoam. Plus way to small, I couldn't stand living in those horrible domes. I like the video but I don't like the actual domes great vid. TERRIBLE DOMES. Note if you want to take me on in an argument I have won every speech I have submitted and read and I put up a good fight when argued. Not being aggressive or anything but I'm serious. I'm right ok.
