Happy Tolkien Reading Day, everyone! Be sure to checkout the playlist featuring all my Tolkien UA-camr friends on this special day: ua-cam.com/play/PLJ-mgGUnQJmzSmIG5mDuoofpsLGbo8uxH.html
Hey Matt! Pls put a video on the forodwaith /dwarves of the east pls respond to this!! :-) thank you!
Btw happy Tolkien reading day everyone!
Happy Tolkien Reading Day! Thank you for making me fall in love with his stories again and again, with your every post.
Hi can you please make a video on the picture that out about the peter jackson 2024 silmarillion movie
I love the story of Gondolin so much, it's my favorite of all of Tolkien's tales. I wish to Eru he had completed the final version of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin.
Gondolin is also my favorite of the ancient elven cities.
@@irighterotica same!
Yep, Gondolin is the best.
@@irighterotica Yes, it's so perfect, hidden nestled in a picture-esk valley with fertile soil, surrounded by high peaks and Great Eagles. It screams of Elven Nobility.
Contrast Turgon's reaction to Tuor with Thingol's reaction to Beren. Remarkable.
Of all the fallen realms of the first age and their kings, it's Turgon and Gondolin I have the most pity for because their fall was caused by the betrayal of one horny elf.
I think that Gondolin was doomed even if Maeglin hadn't betrayed them. Morgoth already knew the region where Gondolin was hidden and he would eventually find a way to reach it.
@@lisboah yes. That happend when Hurin was relesead by Morgoth. He yelled Turgon s name at the mountains of the nearby Gondolin...and Morgoth knew then..."Húrin cried out against Turgon, thus inadvertently revealing the general location of Gondolin to Morgoth's spies, and then left."
Maeglin certainly deserves criticism - perhaps even damnation - but I can't help but have some sympathy for him. He had a childhood that almost guaranteed a troubled psyche, he was under pressure to inherit the leadership of the Noldor for which he was clearly not suited, he had to contend with the fact that Tuor - a member of (let's be honest) an inferior species - was universally loved in Maeglin's own city, etc. Yes, a person of better character could have overcome that and thrived, but his life was, nevertheless, far from idyllic.
@@nooneinparticular1491 He was under the effect of the Doom of the Noldor, even though he was born afterwards; he was the result of a very twisted marriage; his father killed his mother in front of him; his father cursed him before dying; th only woman he ever loved never loved him back and even distrusted him because of his father's curse, etc. Maeglin might have been doomed from the moment he was born.
Also, it's weird that the Elves find love between cousins abhorrent, but see no problem in elves marrying members of other species.
@@lisboah The Gondolindrim might have considered the particular case of Idril + Tuor to be a unique exception. Tuor was raised by elves, and therefore was fluent in their language and culture, he was the chosen messenger of Ulmo, he was the son of an aristocrat (of sorts) who sacrificed his life to allow the Gondolindrim to escape from a catastrophic, lost battle with their lives, etc. He would probably have seemed to them less of a mortal man, and more of an elf with man-traits (for lack of a better term).
'of mighty kings in Nargorthron and Gondolin who now beyond'
When the dwarfs find your city so awesome that they reference it in the song about their great king, you know you did something well
Can never hear this story too many times! The re-telling makes the characters & action “pop” off the pages!! 😊
Tolkien wrote the first version of this story while recovering from sickness just before the Somme campaign. Ironically the illness probably saved his life. The battle was long, bloody, and utterly indecisive. It was also the first battle to use in mass tanks and aircraft. One sees a little if that in the fall of Gondolin.
I wonder how many ppl he went into battle with/against that ended up reading his book. Absolutely awesome info by the way.
I'm glad, always wanted to know about Gondolin more
Fantastic story crafting. Not Tolkien’s (I mean, his is a given) but yours. I know what is going to happen, and yet you stir in me the emotions as if it were all new. Well done.
Awesome video once again reminding me why the stories of The Silmarillion are so utterly beautiful to dive into.
Happy Tolkien Reading Day Matt! 🧙♂🎉
I'm going to watch this in a second, just need to make some tea first, haha 😁
What is Tolkien day?
@@stargazer467 it's Tolkien Reading Day, it is the day that the "Tolkien fans" agreed on Reading some of the chapters in any of the books written by JRR Tolkien. 25 March, it is the day in his stories when Sauron was finally defeated.
Oh my god just today I was thinking Id love a video about turgon and you actually posted it? Love you❤
Happy Tolkien Reading Day my friend, it is such a pleasure to see this video, love the story of Gondolin! As always the visuals in your videos are top notch!
Little theory/question of mine. Do you think Thranduil‘s line in The Hobbit, where he says: “Do not talk to me of dragon fire I know it is wrath and ruin! I have faced the greats opens of the North.” could be a reference to him, possibly fighting in the war of wrath?
According to the One Ring To Rule Them All wiki, Thranduil was born in the 1st Age and lived in Doriath at that time, so he probably did see action and dragons in that war.
@@rocketraccoon1976 that’s why I was asking!
I subscribed to your channel a few weeks ago and seriously can’t get enough. I’ve read many of Tolkien’s works, but not all, or most.
Mostly watched your 1+ year old videos as they were recommended; didn’t realize you were still currently creating and uploading these! Your compilation and narration of Tolkien is much appreciated…🤝🏻🤘🏻🐉 🔥
Thanks so much! Welcome to the channel! Many vids already made and many more on the way. 😁
Happy Tolkien Reading Day!
And thank you for this wonderful episode on the history of Arda!
Actually it is Hurin who upon his release by Morgoth uncovers the location of Gondolin. He trys to find Gondolin but fails and in his frustration curses at his former rescuers. Unfortunately, Morgoth sends his spies after him to monitor his travels and that is when he is given an approximate location. After that, he focuses his efforts on that region and not soon after he captures Maegllin.
Yeah, but maeglin told all the secrets of the city, he told about the scape exit, that the city had a lot of swords and weapon etc
Awesome video! One of my favorite stories. I loved the house of the hammer of wrath description in the books.
My favourite House of the Gondolinthlim is House of the Golden Flower or House of the Fountain, but it doesn't lessen bravery of warriors of the House of Hammer of wrath, who gave hope to all free people of Middle-Earth, when they killed balrogs.
I've heard and read these stories so many times yet each of your videos makes them exciting and fresh. Thank you for casting such a joyful light on Tolkien's works.
I was literally just yesterday wanting a Turgon video. Love your work man!
So close to 1 million subs!!! I’ll be here for it🎉
Recently got my gf into LoTR haha. I attribute that to you!
I've been waiting for this one! Thanks!
Sweet video Matt! I love all of the Gondolin stuff, as Gondolin is my jam! 🤘
Happy Tolkien Reading Day! Loved the Video!
Great video, Turgon and Gondolin story is a masterpiece!
Reading The Fall of Gondolin right now. Timing couldn’t have been better ✨
I imagine Hurin's reaction to the unexpected arrival of Turgon's host of elves to bolster his side of Maedhros' Union to be something like Aragorn's "You are most welcome" chat with the elves at Helm's Deep in the movie.
I'd just like to say, I stumbled across your channel looking for map-related lore content and I've been binging your videos for a week straight! You really do an incredible job of presenting engaging visuals with great storytelling. Looking forward to whatever you produce next 😊
Happy Tolkien Reading Day, NotR! Awesome video as always, and a fitting topic!
I don't know why exactly, but stories of Tuor and now Turgon are my absolute favourites of @NerdoftheRings . Already seen them both at least 10 times. Thank you so much for bringing the missing details of all of Arda in a such great form!
Thanks for exploring with us!
Nerd of the rings: He is the greatest king and founder of arguably the greatest kingdom of elves to ever exist.
Some Vanyar probably: In middle earth.
I was just reading about him last week!
Nice
As a geographer, I have to say that a kingdom consisting of one city, which has a hinterland of one isolated valley, and has no diplomatic or economic connections with any other kingdom, cannot possibly be the greatest kingdom in Middle Earth. At least Doriath, though cut off from other kingdoms by the Girdle of Melian, had extensive territories supporting it. Nargothrond had an even larger hinterland, and was not artificially cut off from the rest of Beleriand and its resources. I really don’t see how Gondolin in its tiny valley could have supported itself, much less been fabulously wealthy.
Because all of these realms never had a chance to rally each other BECAUSE of those links. By isolating themselves diplomatically, they avoided the worst of the Doom Of Mandos and the Curse.
Tuor comes to the city with two options, either Gondolin goes to war immediately and the Orcs and Balrogs are wiped out eternally, or that the Gondolindrim must leave and set sail for Valinor.
Consider that if Tuor hadn't taken so long, if he convinced Turgon to fight, Gondolin might've singlehandedly averted Nargathronds destruction. And with Turin in such high council an alliance would've been EASY. Then Turgon as High King could've restrained Maedros and the Sons Of Feanor, averting the Ruin Of Doriath. Dior was a young young Elf, and could've been swayed by either Oredreth or Turgon. Suddenly all the Elves of Beireland are united in purpose. Tuor and turin then could've rallied Men to their Banner, and the Hope of Ulmo might have been achieved.
Thats why they're considered in the running for greatest. Because no one else was as free from the Doom as they were, or were free to focus on their craft and skill as they.
Thank you so much for doing this video and keep up the good work!
I love middle earth. This middle earth universe is one of the best and successful book serieses ever. We always appreciate your hard work and dedication towards these videos.
We need a Gondolin video!
I’m in the middle of The Fall Of Gondolin so I appreciate the timing 😊 happy Tolkien day
Thank you for this, I see Gondolin mentioned or briefly included in content for many years but always wanted to know more as someone who has only seen the Movies and not read the Books.
Thank you so much for these videos, you rock! Hard!
Tales of the First Age always get me emotional..... Especially Gondolin ❤
Love your videos, man. Cheers!
at 5:11 you placed Finrod's portrait instead of Fingon 😅 but the video is awesome 🥰
Is this channel your main job? It looks like you put so much thought, creativity and effort into every aspect of it.
This is so epic!! Great content as always! 😁
Great video, I was waiting for a mention of glamdring, but I suppose that could be a video on its own.
Not gonna lie, of all the elven realms gondolin would definitely be the one I'd most love to see!❤
I missed this video somehow?! Great little surprise to watch now 🎉
I really like this tale. It is one of my favourites.
During his time in Valinor, the feeling that Melkor will end up with Turgon every time he meets Turgon is related to Huor's vision.
One elf that I realize is often left off the lists of badass elves is Idril. I know she's not a warrior, but she is most DEFINITELY one of the greatest heroes of Gondolin. She saved a large part of the city's population by building that tunnel. She Idril is definitely one of my favorite elves, up there with Luthien. Turgon got it right with his daughter. She even chose right in a husband, probably my #2 mannish character (after Faramir, love him to bits), Tuor. Basically, Turgon was blessed in both daughter and heart-son.
Other Turgon's known deeds was his sword. Glamdring. While he's dead long ago, his sword still serve the good and banish the evil by his new user, Gandalf
Love this, Great history of King Turgon of Gondolin🥰
Can you do a compilation of all your videos into 9 hour segments so I can literally listen the entire time I'm at work?
Happy Tolkien Reading Day!! 📚
Well done
Once again a great video. Love the eleven Kings and Lords
these First Age stories i like much more than all others. Dont get me wrong, i love the LOTR and TH, but The First /age is just so much more tragic and somber and everything just seems grander: Thurin being toyed with by the curse and then there is the doom of Mandos and the fate of the Noldor, warnings of Ulmo. Curses, oaths and forces beyond children of Illuvatar.i love the dark vibe
I want to see either an animated version of this tale or a movie.. it be sweet
I’ve always wondered why the winged dragons couldn’t find Gondolin… I’ll appreciate any insight on that topic, especially when you say that Morgoth didn’t have any forces capable of flight.
The winged dragons did not appear until the War of Wrath, which was after the Fall of Gondolin.
I do love the way Tolkien embedded the Half-Elven and their bloodlines as most of the greatest heroes throughout the ages. Although so much is made of “high” blooded peoples, it is the mix of the races that seem to always win the greatest of victories. When you think about the context of ideas like that during the contemporary times of the ‘10s through the ‘40s that he built his world, it’s so far ahead of its time.
The story of Gondolin is so epic because it contains some of the greatest characters of middle earth with the most important destinies.. Hurin the greatest warrior of men to ever exist and Earendil the Evening Star and slayer of the greatest dragon to ever exist
Amazing.... ❤️
We deserve a movie (done by those who truly respect and love Tolkien’s work) about the rise and fall of Gondolin.
I hope not. Hopefully the Estate sticks by its guns and never allows the posthumous publications to be adapted.
You could do a whole video on the gates alone. This city was brilliant and by far the best in all Tolkien lore
Im sorry. I love your videos. Not sure if you have the same opinion, but it feels like your energy level in you previous videos was higher than it is nowdays.
Perhaps he lost some confidence when he sold his soul for Amazon money?
@@krisf4969 I'm super curious as to how much money he's getting from Amazon. Do you know? For real ?!
I legit am curious.
However, this needs to be said in NOTR defense: he does the OPPOSITE of what ROP does. He promotes LORE! He shows maps with dates and crap. And his ROP review went down after S1 completion. He points out many problems with the show.
So I think he still has his Tolkien-card.
What I think more incredible is the fact that most of the people who watch Lotr are eager to have more of the movie but do not dive into Tolkien literature… i’m just a noob (finished all of the “not academic” books) but so fascinated with all the epic tales of all characters that I keep seeing these videos…
I’ve read also all A Song of ice and fire and, beside the rivalry that has between the fans of each of series, I relate them as equally magnificent literature of human history
Can you make a video of the lives of Angrod and Aegnor?
His story is both epic and tragic but that's the way he was known as a legend
Good one. Loved it ❤
Please explain thingol next
One of the greats for sure!
Man… You know how to take us out of our world, and feel like we live in the moment With those who fought and gave their lives…
Turgon might be one of my fav elf kings besides Thingol and Fingolfin!
Yooo, great video man! Could you do one about the great halls of men/ the afterlife for most men
I would like to know more about elronds sons quite distant from everyone else are they not
its intresting to note that during their time in Valinor, Morgoth always felt inscure about Turgon. That thought even hunted Morgoth more when Turgon escaped the war
Arrogance. The most dangerous thing. Nothing can bring ruin like arrogance can.
"Great is the fall of Gondolin!" Turgon, king of Gondolin, High king of Noldor in The Fall of Gondolin.
Yeah I am reading the book now and I'm at the part where I have read through the Fall of Gondolin now. I hope very much that the War of Rohirrim movie is a success and that it inspires that film studio to create more stand-alone stories in LOTR and one of them being the Fall of Gondolin.
You would have a good plot with Tuor's journey to finding Gondolin, get a deeper dive into the 12 houses of Gondolin, the sheer power and size of Morgoth's armies during this time in Middle Earth, and you would get even more insane action sequences than you saw in Peter Jackson's films (Hint: Lord Ecthelion's achievements in this battle particularly).
Goddamn I love these videos. I’m taking my daughter to the park while listening to this 👌🏻👌🏻
Happy Tolkien Reading Day my friend!
No wonder the Tolkien estate has rights to the Silmarillion etc. It’s so in depth it. If it were an HBO show, it would put Game of Thrones flat on it face.
Finrod isn't Turgons brother 5:10
If silmarilion is made into a movie. Turgon should be protoganist
Out of all Tolkien's stories, I wish we could get an adaption of this!
That will never happen at all, we all see that by amazon and their garbage of rop a billion middle finger to the fandom and anyone who had great exception at start when they only showed the map of the second age, but when more crap start coming out everyone turn back to it snd give up on that trash show. It could happen only maybe on game bfme2 rise of the witch-king edain mod has a custom map
I so much would have liked to see among the art represnting Turgon, Blind Guardian's "Mirror Mirror" -single cover.
I like how Tudor gets armor shield and sword almost like playing a Zelda game.
Is there a possibility that there will be a video about the stone giants, appearing in the Unexpected Journey? There is almost no information about it in Tolkiens works, and I am curious about them
Coud you do an video about Maeglin son of EOL
Oh my! at the Towers! I kinda regard Bag End, Underhill, yet another.
Finally some gondolin backstory
well done
Not sure why but I seem to think that Orcrist and Glamdring originate from the smiths of Gondolin and that Glamdring was Turgon's word. Between the fall of Gondolin and The Hobbit the sword ended up in a troll hoard.
"Great shall be the victory of the Noldor"
Day 9,999,999 of asking you to put your videos into 9 hour compilations so I can listen non stop at work
Do a video on talion from the shadow games eventhou it is not canon
Can you do a video on Ecthelion of the fountain
My favorite kingdom!
The saddest part of all this is: Hurin and the house of hador made a last stand in order to protect turgon and the survivors so they could get to gondolin because as long as gondolin stands strong Morgoth would know fear. He defies Morgoth and in return morgoth cusrses his family and makes him watch and listen to all the misfortunes of his family and all of this cause he tried to protect gondolin just to be the one indirectly responsible for its fall many years later.
Nice, posted 20 seconds ago
14 minutes late to the party.
39minutes but feeling equally blessed
1 hour for me.
2 hours for me
Well yes... if it was uploaded and then 20 seconds later you see it then yes it would have been posted 20 seconds ago?
