Among the greatest elven kings and the one elf who dueled Morgoth to single combat. Even though he lost, he made Morgoth limp for the rest of his days. Fingolfin is such an amazing character
"see how even a god bleeds"-unnumbered Greeks against Xerxes. The closest parallel to the valour and gravitas that fingolfin brought to the universe of JRR Tolkien. A legend of a wonderous and fantastical historia, capping off an equally fantastical and hypnotic epic
I've always loved the mental image of seeing Fingolfin looking out to death, despair and destruction and him just NOT standing for it, NOT accepting it and just being the total embodiment of 'I will stop this desecration'... The fact that he willing challenged the most powerful Valar to a one on one dual is just so great; taking a demi-god to task over his actions, that's got to be one of the coolest, most badass events in all of Middle-Earth's history!
Absolutely, and aside from the bravery to do such a thing, and the skill to wound Morgoth eight times (permanently, I might add), one has to admire the pure strength of this great Elf. For, when he was fatigued, stumbled and was borne down on with a shield by a Vala who was said to have the weight of a fallen hill (at the point a little later when he kills Fingolfin), three times Fingolfin pushed back and rose from being crushed down to his knees. Pushed back physically against a Vala - wow.
To be fair, i think Morgoth would be considered a fully fledged god, not in the same order as Eru, but just below, i would assume that Sauron would be considered a Demi God, just my opinion.
Agreed; probably more accurate that it's levels of Divinity; The one true god (Eru) Then upper gods / angelic choir / archangels; Valar - Morgoth and Co. below that, lesser Gods (demi-gods), angels & spirits; Maiar - Sauron / Gandalf Before hitting non-divine 'beings'. So yes definitely downgraded Melkor in my original post.
When Fingolfin finally flipped the switch, nobody dared to face him at the gates of Angband. Balrogs, or Werewolves, nobody. That's why Morgoth had to step up, think about that. In that state, it's safe to say he was the greatest Elf.
“Thinking that Orome himself was come. For a great madness of rage was upon him. So that his eyes shone like the eyes of the Valar” one of my favorite quotes. It’s so powerful when you’ve read the earlier chapters of the Silmarillion about the Valar and of Orome’s heroic deeds. That Fingolfin embodied this spirit on his way to his doom is just so moving. Makes me cry
Fingolfin is my favorite of all the elven kings. Maybe even all the elves (Elrond and Galadriel are my other favorites). He was the one who gave the elves a golden age and honestly deserves to be resurrected into a new body
@@levilandes1719 Same. He's a very compassionate, honorable, and kind-hearted elf who by the way, is a king. He sacrificed his life to help a mortal man attain something that seems to be impossible.
Fingolfin's final battle is the manliest and most tragically heroic scene in all of LotR. there was the paragon of leadership and nobility that feanor never achieved nor even understood; dead, because of his brother's vanity and selfishness.
My favorite elf of all Tolkien's characters. His loyalty to Feanor despite everything is praise worthy. I loved the part where he rode directly to Angband to face the terror of Morgoth directly once and for all and all the dark creatures of Morgoth hid away because he rode so ferociously that the Orcs feared that it was Orome the Vala himself on his steed Nahaar, he gave Morgoth the wounds that he would carry for the rest of the eternity. His son Fingon was also one of the greatest warrior kings of the Noldor who faced two Balrogs at once while one of them was Gothmog lord of Balrogs. Edit: NOTR, you did an amazing job covering Fingolfin, i loved listening to it and watching the art, i had my sons watch it with me and we all enjoyed it. Thank you!
@@kiennguyentrong1897 Thank you for correcting me as it has been some time since i have read Silmarillion and i forget the details, i will edit it now! 🥂
Absolutely. And the foolishness is epitomised by his action in burning the ships after their crossing and denying Fingolfin and his host passage. For Fingolfin had pledged to follow Feanor *and had done so* so earning the Ban of the Valar with him, he also tipped the balance at the Battle at Alqualonde so that the Noldor were victorious and then they were abandoned by Feanor as "useless baggage". The Useless Baggage just saved your skin! Additionally, it's quite possible that had Fingolfin and his host been allowed to travel on the ships, Feanor might not have been overwhelmed by all the Balrogs and killed, and Maedhros might not have been captured and eventually had to lose his right hand.
He had no reason to go. Morgoth was playing mind games this entire time. The same way he did with Turin and Hurin afterwards. They both believed in Morgoth, blinded more so to see that they were doing a lot of good going after him in vengeance when all they did was kill their own and make themselves hated, laughable and cursed. It was a “holy” crusade and if you didn’t secede or follow you were unholy and corrupted by the “lies” of the valar who restrained them. The fact that Feanor thought that he had such harm done to him when before the elves woke and the two trees were made the Valar also went through a lot because of Melkor, he was just a hater and wanted to destroy everything.
That Feanor guy sure was more trouble than he was worth......LMAO. Great and mighty, but without the head on his shoulders like his half-brother Fingolfin......to his and his son's ruin. Fingolfin certainly showed his bravery (if brashly) ultimately by challenging Melkor to single combat. His wisdom led to a golden age for the Noldor......great years that they had precious few of otherwise once Feanor started his antics in Valinor.
Two things haven't been mentioned so much as achievements of Fingolfin that aren't as flashy as those well-described are: - 1. Under his leadership, the Noldor kept Morgoth penned up in Angband for _four hundred years_ which has never been done before or since by anyone else other than the Valar Themselves when they literally chained Morgoth. 2. He sought to heal the rifts within the Noldor. Not only in the beginning in Valinor when he publicly forgave Feanor and pledged to follow him, but also later in Middle Earth when he held a great festival to try to bring all the Elves of Middle Earth (including the Sindar) together in friendship and peace. And it's worth restating: like Finarfin, he wasn't keen on the Noldor going to Middle Earth. The only reason he did so was he wasn't willing to abandon his people to the sole command of Feanor, who was quite literally crazy by this point.
@@kauetadaieski3131 But he still did not want to leave Tirion, and is the only prince during that day, that is said to have felt so, while Arafinwe turned back after the doom. Also he did never participate in any crime except the leaving of Aman, bc he never took part in the kinslaying.
In my view Fingolfin was a greater elf than Fëanor. Fëanor may have more talent and skill than any other elf but I call him the worst of the elves for leading his foolish rebellion, the swearing of that terrible oath, the first kinslaying, the burning of the ships, etc and subsequent actions that resulted in the destruction of most of the Noldor in Middle-Earth. Fingolfin led the Noldor to the best of his ability for some 4 centuries in the war against Morgoth. Now that's a truly great elf and king!
I couldn't agree more. Feanor was the greatest in skill, passion and perhaps intellect too. But he misused those gifts - especially the intellect - and lost his greatness in evil and foolish deeds. Fingolfin was probably a better warrior than Feanor anyway, but definitely a better person.
Exactly. Being the most talented is not the same as being the best leader. It's a universal human truth, and one that Tolkien illustrates incredibly well in the contrast between Feanor and Fingolfin.
Another awesome video Matt! Fingolfin was such a beast taking on and incredibly wounding Morgoth. The fact that Melkor feared him is still amazes me. Fingolfin was definitely one of the bravest elves to live
That final charge of Fingolfin's across the plains to meet with and fight Morgoth, aside from being one of the greatest tales told, is perhaps evidence that he was filled with great magical power, even though he wasn't as overt a "wielder" of magic as Galadriel or even Feanor. There's no way a mere Elf should have been able to do that...but as Galadriel much later described, Elves have trouble with the concept of "magic", as non-Elves call it, as it's inherent to their abilities and they don't consider it to be supernatural. Fingolfin's charge is reminiscent of, but far greater than, the almost magical power that filled Theodon King in his last battle (and perhaps Hurin Thalion, at his final stand) - an old man somehow granted almost superhuman strength. For Fingolfin's eyes to shine like those of the Valar to the point where he resembled _Orome_ and to intimidate all of Morgoth's servants (who, let's not forget, include Balrogs, dragons and werewolves !!) such that he came alone and uncontested to the gates of Angband and only Morgoth came out to fight him, indicates the depth of this empowerment. Not only do Morgoth's eight wounds from Fingolfin never heal but such is the psychological scarring from this encounter, even though he won, that Morgoth never came forth in open combat himself ever again, despite being one of the greatest powers in all of Arda's history.
Dude gave his world's version of Satan crippling PTSD for thousands of years. If he had lived to the third age, the war against Sauron wouldn't have lasted 2 minutes.
Think of all the experience Fingolfin went through, with the migration, the battles, the high kingship overseeing the elven civilizations of the time...while Morgoth just b*tched out and hid in his big rock.
I would like to see Fingolfin to a movie one day. He is my favorite Elven King and your explanation is fantastic. Thank you for all beautiful travels to middle earth from first to fourth age.
You did such a great reading (as usual)! It's so much easier to understand the Silmarillion etc when watching one of your videos than just reading it on my own.
Might be my favorite Tolkien character. Just wish we had more material about him and, eventually, a live action adaptation that does him justice. Would love to see a show or movie showing his relationship with his brothers, especially Feanor
Fingolfin is such a great character, noble and valiant among the Noldor. Despite being betrayed and left stranded on the shores of Araman, he had no grudge with Fëanor’s sons and cooperate with Maedhros. I hope that, because of his bravery in defying Morgoth in single combat, the Valar allowed his reimbodiement so he could live in the bliss of Valinor together with his wife and his brother Finarfin
You know what I love about your videos Matt? It's that you always not only talk about a chracter/settlement/other, you also talk to us about the travels, which is where your videos are unique! Thanks for the wonderful videos of yours!
Fingolfin will aways be the greatest of the noldor in my opinion. Even when he was right and got threatened by feanor he aways keep his cool and respect, and he's heart was aways fill with justice and forgiveness. his rule was aways just, and he aways had his people best interest in mind. The decision to challenge morgoth in single combat reflect the fire in his heart, so no one of his people has to suffer or die to defeat the dark lord if he was succeded, but unfortunately, he wasn't.
Not only one of the most inspiring characters in Middle Earth history, but I would argue the most consequential elf to have lived. Just look at his descendants and their achievements: Turgon, Earandil, Elrond, Elros!
Despite the horror that Middle Earth must feel at the end of such a great elf, his last accomplishment cannot be understated. Dueling Morgoth and actually coping for quite a while is a great achievement. I find the picture of Fingolfin, a shining star, standing before the hulking evil that Morgoth was quite grand. And all the more the shame that such a peacemaker and force of good could be killed. But the idea of 7 wounds could be more than a great number. It could be an allusion to the 7 sins, ie: 7 sins of Morgoth.
Valinor and middle earth are full of heroes. JRRT saw to it that there was no lacking on it. From Lurkas in Valinor to the last of Hobbit in middle earth. Legendarium is about heros in everyday lives.
I agree with you. Although technically, it was eight wounds that he inflicted on Morgoth - seven initially, and then the eighth on the foot as he was killed. And then, Morgoth suffered a ninth wound at the claws of Thorondor.
From the moment I first read the text on him, he's always been my favorite. Single handedly why I was most excited about the Amazon series, I just hope for small glimpses or flashbacks to anything to do with F. Sadly I'm completely skeptical of what it looks like the serious is going to be, but maybe I'll get some imagery from the him and his time periods.
Fingolfin has always been my favorite elf as a person, and an incredibly close second favorite character to Fëanor. So happy about this one, I’ve been silently waiting for so long 😂 as always, well done, and amazing art.
Fingolfin. The strength of honour of the elves. One you would serve under. Loved his people. He was like finarfin in middle earth, where as finarfin stayed behind in Aman

Imagine if we in the end of day had this stand of: Finwae, Feanor, fingolfin, finarfin, finrod and Fingon, earendil, vs Morgoth and Sauron. Tolkien really dropped the ball if I can think of this but he couldnt 😭🤣🤣🤣

Fingolfin’s ride to the doors of Morgoth is one of my favorite excerpts of Tolkien’s writing. *And Morgoth Came* is a line that will ALWAYS give me chills
It's very hard to pick any favorite Tolkien Elf, but Fingolfin certainly has a place right up there amongst the greatest.. going one on one in single combat against a Vala, in friggin Morgoth no less, he certainly ranks as the the most valiant. The fight between the two, High King Fingolfin vs Morgoth, is a huge highlight of _The Silmarillion_ and always been one of my favorite parts.

Think of all the experience Fingolfin went through, with the migration, the battles, the high kingship overseeing the elven civilizations of the time...while Morgoth just b*tched out and hid in his big rock.
I love Fingolfin - his stand-off with Morgoth was epic, what a badass. Been looking out for a video on him from you for a while. Definitely worth it!
Fingolfin was absolutely savage!! Going against a Valar. The greatest of the high elves
fingolfin has always been my favourite hero in all of middle earth. what a badass. great video
I would like to see Fingolfin to a movie one day. He is my favorite Elven King and your explanation is fantastic. Thank you for all beautiful travels to middle earth from first to fourth age.
You are a great storyteller, I wish you could read the silmarillion from the start and explain with graphics as you already do,....
fingolfin was the greatest elf in the history of middle earth; strong, brave, wise, and loyal...thank you for telling his story so beautifully!
You did such a great reading (as usual)! It's so much easier to understand the Silmarillion etc when watching one of your videos than just reading it on my own.
Powerful. Tolkien certainly knew how to stir hearts. Thanks for another awesome video! 💜
Fingolfin remains the greatest elf of all times.
I am so childishly happy that I found this channel. Thank you for the great work you're doing! :)
Not only one of the most inspiring characters in Middle Earth history, but I would argue the most consequential elf to have lived. Just look at his descendants and their achievements: Turgon, Earandil, Elrond, Elros!
Fingolfin always will be my king. One of the best Toliken's character.
Most badass elf!!! My ultimate favourite character of Tolkien’s legendarium.
Yeah, the numbers can’t get more biblical than that
Valinor and middle earth are full of heroes.
@@sweeperboy So a biblical number and then a number common throughout norse mythology, which was one source of inspiration for Middle-Earth!
@@NicholasHEADSHOT the silmallarion doesn't have anything to do with the bible mate
One of my favorite characters from Tolkien's universe. This character is just Legendary!!!
Loved the video!!
Your narration feels like Im travelling in middle earth, so calm and Magical. :)
He is one of the greatest elves ever during the first age. Thank you for sharing this information.
I was going to suggest Fingolfin for a future video! Here are some of my other ideas:
The Complete Travels:
Frodo/Sam
Gollum
Boromir
Arvedui
Eärendil
Turgon
Valar who need own videos (Ulmo, Manwë, Tulkas)

4th Age and After
Animated Map of Changing Geography
Cities (Minas Tirith, Gondolin, Nargothrond)

Tolkien Theories:
What if...Saruman Remained Good
Númenor Never Fell
Melkor Won
Faramir Took The Ring
Bilbo Never Found the Ring
Sam Didn't Like Potatoes
You forgot "What if Gandalf said "Run you fools!"
Give this man a medal
I agree about Ulmo and Manwe but there really isn't that much material on Tulkas.
Brothers deceitfully pitted against each other is one of the greatest tragedies I know of. Breaks my heart every time.
Fingolfin was my favorite Elf Lord, the most valiant Elf.
He took on a Demi-God and made him remember that the Noldor Princes were not to be trifled with.
Morgoth had a limp for the rest of his days!
He was not a Demigod, he was the equal of Manwe' and mightier in power. He was a God! Only Eru was above him, Tulkas was stronger, and Ungoliant more immense. He who arises in might!
@@darthex0*minor god
@@feliciaf8he is not a minor god , he was part of creation
@@darthex0 By that time he wasn't as powerful as he had been. He had spread his power across Middle-Earth so he wasn't as strong as the other Valar any longer but still way more powerful that anyone else in Middle-Earth
Fingolfin, the greatest hero of them all !!! Hail !
This is by FAR my favorite! Thank you for making these. After reading a section of the Silmarillion I always see if you have a video to help me put the pieces together in my mind.
There is something about First-Age stories that always gets me emotional.
I love how you just started reading the Sil when you got to the duel. No summery could top what's on the page.
What a most epic event the history of Middle-earth has seen in my opinion.
I love all first age elves but Fingolfin is incredible! Thank you for the great video! 💙
Today i was seeking on your channel for a video about fingolfin and here it is.👍👍
One of my absolute favorite characters.
I've been looking forward to this
My powers have doubled since the last time we meet, Count.
Fingolfin has long been my favorite Tolkien character followed by Glorfindel. Loved hearing his story again thank you.
My favorite character from all Tolkien literature. He probably knew he stood no chance of defending Margoth but challenged him anyway.
It's epic that in this 1vs1 battle Melkor felt some fear by this child of Iluvatar.
Fingolfin is one of the mightiest. He and Feanor
@@SWOTHDRATolkien dropped the ball? In what conceivable way?
Just this video alone could make the most insanely epic movie trilogy or television series!
I use to think how is there so much lore, how can anyone watch these and I watched one and never turned back hahah. You were the one who literally taught me everything i know about it I love ya matey❤
Not only unsurpassed as a warrior, Fingolfin also had the strength of character to submit his own right as High King of the Noldor to his older brother Feanor in the pursuit of peace and unity. Truly the most noble of Elves.
Such a tragic yet inspiring story. I always loved Fingolfin, baddest of the Kings of the Noldor (though Finrod is probably my favorite).
This is my first time watching through one of your videos. (I have several saved to watching later.) It was super well done! Thank you!
This is absolutely one of the coolest stories ever. Thanks for sharing it!
I absolutely love your videos! I usually refer to your channel whenever I am trying to explain, or introduce, Tolkien's works to newbies!
Everything about them is enjoyable, From the collection of artwork, editing, your story telling, and even the music!
Speaking of the which, that music, as you explain the confrontation between Feanor and Fingolfin, what is that? It's very fitting!
I started reading the silmarilon 2 weeks ago and your explanation really helps to understand the stiry to fullest. Thanks alot 🙂
Probably my favorite elf on all Middle Earth, is between him and Finrod Felagund, but i think Finrod is to Flawless so i´ll pick Fingolfin.
Props. Finrod was a far better elf than Feanor in judgement.
this is the story for the movie. like 5 of them. fingolfin is the best.
Really like how Fin used dodge rolling against Morgoth..goes to show how good it is.
This one brought a tear to my eye dude. So good.
I think Fingolfin is the most powerful elf who had ever set foot in middle earth
I love how we are covering all the potential inspirations for Rings of Power.
I love all the artwork you include!
What a Legendary bit of rising, gives me goosebumps everytime,
Man the feels, the emotion at the end, so powerful, thank you so much.
Personally this is the movie or show I would have liked to have seen. Imagine how epic this would be in the big screen.
I don't trust modern cinema to render it though.
Light fails at dawn
The moon is gone
And deadly the night reigns
Deceit
Finally I've found myself
In these lands
Horror and madness I've seen here
For what I became a king of the lost?
Barren and lifeless the land lies
Lord of all Noldor
A star in the night
And a bearer of hope
He rides into his glorious battle alone
Farewell to the valiant warlord
The Fate of us all
Lies deep in the dark
When time stands still at the iron hill
The Fate of us all
Lies deep in the dark
When time stands still at the iron hill
I stand alone
No one's by my side
I'll dare you
Come out
You coward
Now it's me or you
He gleams like a star
And the sound of his horn's
Like a raging storm
Proudly the high lord
Challenges the doom
Lord of slaves he cries
Slowly in fear
The dark lord appears
Welcome to my lands
You shall be damned
Lord of all Noldor
A star in the night
And a bearer of hope
He rides into his glorious battle alone
Farewell to the valiant warlord
The Fate of us all
Lies deep in the dark
When time stands still at the iron hill
The Fate of us all
Lies deep in the dark
When time stands still at the iron hill
The iron crowned
Is getting closer
Swings his hammer
Down on him
Like a thunderstorm
He's crushing
Down the Noldor's
Proudest king
Under my foot
So hopeless it seems
You've troubled my day
Now feel the pain
Lord of all Noldor
A star in the night
And a bearer of hope
He rides into his glorious battle alone
Farewell to the valiant warlord
The Fate of us all
Lies deep in the dark
When time stands still at the iron hill
The Fate of us all
Lies deep in the dark
When time stands still at the iron hill
The Elvenking's broken
He stumbles and falls
The most proud and most valiant
His spirit survives
Praise our king
Praise our king
Praise our king
Praise our king

Greatest band ever!
An example of how rage can blind and cloud someone's judgement.
Can you make a video on the history of gondolin or on turgon
Love your videos keep it up
I hope you never stop doing this series. It's awesome.
Fingolfin’s ride to the doors of Morgoth is one of my favorite excerpts of Tolkien’s writing. *And Morgoth Came* is a line that will ALWAYS give me chills
Yay! Awesome video as always the Art works is beautiful!
I have watched every video you made, Just wanted to say good job !
Could you please make a video of the house of Finarfin ?
Loved watching your channel grow over the last 2 years man. You are my encyclopedia
Happy Easter Master TaleBearer!
I hope you and your family are safe and healthy.✌
Likewise, my friend! Have a great Easter weekend!
We always appreciate your hard work and dedication towards these videos. Brilliant video.
Brave and courageous, even in defeat. A great hero. Awesome video.
Those elves from Valinor werent afraid of Morgoth. They had insane power.
Always my favourite character, along with Túrin Turambar
Hreat vid as always for one of the greatest elves in all of Arda! Just one question for ya NOTR. Have you ever thought of making videos where you analyze certain battles in LOTR? I think with all the mapping and icons you do, it’d be awesome!
Aye. Another video. Purple ring gang reporting in. The one ring to rule them all.
As always - Great Job, Nerd!:)❤️
Without any doubt, Fingolfin is my favorite character in the entire Tolkien Universe
Animation Of The First and Second Ages Would Be Incredible!!!
AWESOME VIDEO!!! Well done and this is so good to know. We might see this in Amazon series right?
I so wish these stories be made into animation, by the best available animation studio out there, to make them justice
