- Taking apart the Dome drive.
This is a prototype of the gear-based Dome Drive Felix and I designed. It's specifically made for a bearing available here: www.drehteller.... , which is a pretty high-quality bearing with affordable shipping inside Europe. We designed this because we wanted a more precise dome drive than those using friction wheels, and we wanted to use that bearing. The solution we came up with is pretty tolerant to mounting position; you can be as far as 2mm off with the inner gear mount and still get a precise drive with almost no play, so no spring-loaded motor mount is needed (but can be used).
We are planning to make the final version available to the R2 builders club; it's going to consist of an aluminium outer gear, a nylon inner gear (to avoid alu-on-alu friction and alu dust in the electronics) and an aluminium hub with a 6mm bore and worm screw to fix the inner gear to a motor axle. Maybe we'll even offer the bearing as part of the package to get a cheaper price on that. Mail me or comment here if you're interested; we don't have a price quote yet but I'll update here when we do.
Very nice build. Is there anyway you can cut down the noise generated from the motor?
You can find out more on the Astromech forums. We have never gotten enough interest to do a real run but it may be possible to manufacture a one-off for you.
Vary nice is this kit available today?
i would like to know more and how much
I'm seeking a dome gear set...you guys still have one laying around?
