- Initial drive with D.O.D.O., my D unit Star Wars droid.
I'm quite happy with how she drives, although some stuff is still missing. The head movement you see in the video is completely automatic, there is no remote input except forward / backward and turn stick, because I didn't get around to implement the inverse kinematics for that yet... and the automatic movement is much too hot in the turns.
There's also no remote controlled sound output yet, the back headplate is still missing so obviously also no antenna motion yet, I haven't implemented position hold and there are some other minor bugs. But she controls quite well.
More info on the build, control setup, hardware and software to follow on this playlist in the next days and weeks. This will all be open sourced and hopefully well documented so anyone can replicate it. So subscribe :-)
Blessed by the algorithm
Lovely bit of control design here! The droid really has some character too. Subscribed so I can follow progress 😊
Thank you! Parametrization is still a bit hot I think, and let's see how well it still controls when the head back plate with the antennas is on, that adds 70g of weight... tuning will continue.
This Is Awesome Continue The Great Work
cooool, how does it turn?
That's what I'm wondering
It's a bit of a magic trick :-) It *looks* like there is only one big wheel, but really it runs on the two narrow rims left and right of the wheel, which protrude just a tiny bit, and which each have their separate motor. So turning is the easy part. Making it balance forward/backward without oscillation so that it looks good is the hard part...
@@therealbjoerngieslerThat’s amazing!
That looks amazing! How long have you been working on it?
Hard to say exactly, since this is a side project of a BB-8 build that's literally going on for years. But this one, probably six months?
Sensational
Algorithm bright me here. I like robots.
I would love to build one of these. This is amazing. Where did you get the files and the parts for it?
This is based on the 3d print files of Michael Baddeley (find him on Patreon and Facebook), but modified for encoder motors, Dynamixel servos and completely different electronics and software. Subscribe for howto videos and links coming in the next days.
@@therealbjoerngieslerdone and done
eeee is amazing!
Is it dynamically balanced ? ( Inverted pendulum ) or statically with a weight ?
There's a big counterweight in the body.

Not for sale, sorry 😂 But you can build one...?
Hello Peter! We are interested in collaborating with you and would like to know the best way to get in touch. Thank you! - Sienna from PCBWay🤗
Who is Peter? 🙂
@therealbjoerngiesler Whoops! It should be my alter ego who handles the cool collabs🤣 Just a little mix-up on our end-apologies for that! Back to business, Hello Björn, might you be interested in exploring a sponsorship opportunity with us? We’d appreciate your consideration!

@@therealbjoerngiesler Thanks a lot!
I will never understand why that ugly useless droid was jammed into the franchise.
Disney likes ducks, I guess.
What is this thing from?
Star Wars - Rise of Skywalker.
@@therealbjoerngiesler huh. I don't really remember that movie it kind of felt like a fever dream.
