Thank you for listening! This is one of our favorites. Unfortunately we are unable to gather now until the pandemic subsides but I'm glad people can sing along to the videos.
@@Saltydogshanty If it helps, that video encouraged me to introduce this song to the choir I am singing in, it's that good (as many of the others you listed are, too) - when we ourselves will be allowed to meet again. Stay strong and perservere!
Thank you for listening! Esther has garnered amazing compliments from around the world for this performance. I hope you find many more otherworldly experiences to sing along to, among our hundreds of pub sing videos.
Jesus Christ that was incredible. Listening to the build-up to the first chorus had me feeling like I was hauling the rope for my sailor comrades and watching the glaciers and mountains get further and further away in the distance, as the crew calls for the rum to be brought out. Brilliant
It's a damn tough life, full of toil and strife, we whaler-men undergo And we don't give a damn when the gale is done, how hard the Winds did blow For we're homeward bound from the Arctic ground with a good ship, taut and free And we won't give a damn when we drink our rum with the girls Of old Maui (Chorus) Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, rolling down to old Maui We're homeward bound from the Arctic ground, rolling down to old Maui (Verse) Once more we sail with the northerly gale through the ice and wind and rain Them coconut fronds, them tropical lands, we soon shall see again Six hellish months we've passed away on the cold Kamchatka sea But now we're bound from the Arctic ground, rolling down to old Maui (Chorus) Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, rolling down to old Maui We're homeward bound from the Arctic ground, rolling down to old Maui (Verse) Once more we sail with the northerly gale, towards our island home Our mainmast sprung, our whaling done, and we ain't got far to roam Our stu'n's'l booms is carried away, what care we for that sound? A living gale is after us, thank God we're homeward bound! (Chorus) Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, rolling down to old Maui We're homeward bound from the Arctic ground, rolling down to old Maui (Verse) How soft the breeze through the island trees, now the ice is far astern Them native maids, them tropical glades, is awaiting our return Even now their big brown eyes look out, hoping some fine day to see Our baggy sails, running 'fore the gales, rolling down to old Maui (Chorus) Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, rolling down to old Maui We're homeward bound from the Arctic ground, rolling down to old Maui Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, rolling down to old Maui We're homeward bound from the Arctic ground, rolling down to old Maui
@@PieeLB Unfortunately we have not sang in large groups indoors since the outbreak of Covid. We have been singing in small groups outdoors but the numbers, and sound volume, just not good enough for videos. We miss this so much!
I sing bass to the main melody, but don't harmonize. the harmonizing is all of the people sitting around the pub. You were probably hearing someone directly behind or next to me. Thank you for listening!
We do! We are located in Minneapolis and St. Paul MN. See our intro video for details. Similar pub sings can be found mostly in historic seaport cities.
We sing in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA (at Merlin's Rest Pub, shown here) and at The Dubliner bar in St. Paul, Minnesota. Unfortunately we have not been able to sing together since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Thank you for listening and I hope you find more songs to enjoy on our channel.
The crowd isn't just singing backup, they're harmonizing! 😮
Many of our singers live for harmony!
Shanty is all about that.
The backup vocals from the crowd support the song perfectly. Best version I heard so far.

100% agree
Indeed!!
This is honestly one of the best damn renditions I've ever heard of this song, and the entire pub doing backup vocals perfectly adds so much.
When Haddoc aprowes a shanty…
This is how a pub should be! Many thanks for recording this performance - props to the audience; especially the bass!
How did I only just find this? I thought I’d heard most versions of this song but now this..this is otherworldly

There is a baritone dominating this song.
Problem?
She remembers me of James Kidd from Black Flag

Nothin against "clean" chorale styles of singing, but this is how exactly you should sing a shanty - Dirty, and full of grit
Awesome song ! thx for this video
