Another sea shanty for you, "Rolling Down to Old Maui" is a traditional sea shanty likely originating from the mid 19th century. It expresses the excitement of the crew of a whaling vessel as it returns to Maui after a season of whaling in the Kamchatka Sea.
Lyrics:
It's a damn tough life full of toil and strife
We whalermen undergo
And we won't give a damn when the gale is done
How hard the winds do blow
For We're homeward bound from the Arctic Gound
With a good ship taut and free
And we don't give a damn when we drink our rum
With the girls of Old Maui
Rolling down to Old Maui, me boys
Rolling down to Old Maui
We're homeward bound from the Arctic Ground
Rolling down to Old Maui
Once more we sail with a Northerly gale
Through the ice, and wind, and rain
Them coconut fronds, them tropical shores
We soon shall see again
For Six hellish months we passed away
On the cold Kamchatka sea
But now we're bound from the Arctic ground
Rolling down to Old Maui
Rolling down to Old Maui, me boys
Rolling down to Old Maui
We're homeward bound from the Arctic Ground
Rolling down to Old Maui
Once more we sail the Northerly gale
Towards our Island home
Our whaling done, out mainmast sprung
And we ain't got far to roam
Our stans'l booms is carried away
What care we for that sound
A living gale is after us
Thank God we're homeward bound
Rolling down to Old Maui, me boys
Rolling down to Old Maui
We're homeward bound from the Arctic Ground
Rolling down to Old Maui
How soft the breeze through the island trees
Now the ice is far astern
Them native maids, them tropical glades
Is awaiting our return
Even now their big, brown eyes look out
Hoping some fine day to see
Our baggy sails running 'fore the gales
Rolling down to Old Maui
Rolling down to Old Maui, me boys
Rolling down to Old Maui
We're homeward bound from the Arctic Ground
Rolling down to Old Maui
Rolling down to Old Maui, me boys
Rolling down to Old Maui
We're homeward bound from the Arctic Ground

some of the more obscure sea shanties are even better than the popular ones. Would love a cover of "the cruel wars", and "the coast of high barbary"❤
The Coast of High Barbary is sosososo good
No doubt!
Yes, Cruel Wars!
i would love to see cruel wars but also Johnny i hardly knew ya both really great songs
Talks about "obscure" shanties and then goes on to talk about The Cruel Wars. Lmfao
Fun story for y’all.
Over on TikTok, I had watched Seth’s video of “leave her Johnny Leave her” and asked him to do this song. The reason I asked him, besides it being a great song and a favourite of mine, is because my wife and I were about to set off on our first ever cruise. We are from Canada, and we’re flying out to Hawaii. For the first leg of our cruise, we would be travelling from Honolulu to Lahaina on Maui. So the line “Now we’re bound from the Arctic grounds, rolling down to old Maui” was actually quite literal for us.
Thank you so much for doing this for us Seth. It’s much appreciated.
My pleasure! Excellent request
I hope you’re gone from there by now… my heart breaks for you, Maui-it was just too ironic that my shuffle brought this one up first this morning…
Definitely want a shanty album from ya Seth!
Working on it!
@@sethstatonwatkins unfathomably hype, fingers crossed for Spanish Ladies, Maid of Amsterdam and Eliza Lee
Love your videos, Seth. May it come as a suggestion, could you perhaps do "The Herring is the King of the Sea"? I'm not sure if it's Irish, since I saw it in a Manx folk music playlist, but I'd love to hear it in your voice. Cheers from Brazil and keep it up with the amazing work! 😃
Thank you, I’ll look into it!
Loving the sea shanties, Seth! Keep them coming!
You're really so talented! Thank you for sharing!!!!
Marvelous, Seth!!! I couldn't stop humming this last weekend (not sure why). It's a mighty fine surprise to hear this from you. You have absolutely done it justice. Kudos!
Thank you!
No better way to start one's weekend than the wonderful voice of Seth Staton Watkins filling your heart and ears😊
Every week it’s another video with one of my favorite jams!! I think you were definitely Stan Rogers in a past life.
Even the waves are moving in time
Sang with a traditional chanty group on of my favorite ones
Lovely song mate! I'd love a cover of "whall be king but Charley"
!!! I don't think I've ever seen you without your hat! What a treat!!
…that hatless one tho… 😊🫠😍
Shhhhhh…

Have you thought about doing any filk? That's scifi and fantasy folk music, as well as many other topics. I highly recommend Witnesses' Waltz by Julia Ecklar. She and Leslie Fish have a lot of good stuff like that. The channel Songs from the Stars has a lot of them if you're looking for examples!
Also "Turkish Revelry" by Loudon Wainwright III is awesome, so is "the golding vanity", that one is my absolute favorite shanty of all time, especially the version sing about sinking a turkish ship, but there is also a version about a spanish ship! 😊
both of these are pretty much the same song, although turkish revelry is a bit older, and has more lyrics which got cut out in the golden vanity version .
Well i think i have listened to this one about 12 times. Just so good. ❤
Allow me to offer a suggestion. Johnny comes marching home again. You’d be amazing for that song 👍
That was so good! I love how you always put your own spin on the songs you do.
Yes! The finest singer of sea shanties!!!! Love your range!!!
i so much love your voice
Never enough shanties!
For those who love sea shanties and might like a good rhyme and a laugh, but are also over 18 look up "the good ship venus", fair warning you might be stunned by the lyrics😅
more stan is always great!
Absolutely amazing
Keep the shanties comin' matey!
Also, I love the sailor look you gave yourself on the left side of the trio.
Great work! Definitely keep ‘em coming!
Pleaaase do John Paul Jones of Jonhy Horton
YES!!!!
also sink the Bismark by him, is lit! 😊
amazing cover im probably gonna listen to this all week
Great covers, no fathing around just great singing!
i love this song so much, your cover is definitely one for the books, cant wait to listen to this on loop ❤
Fantastic tune sir. Well done.
Wonderful. 💜(I just can't watch without getting sea-sick)
Fair
You're just working your way through the entire Roud Index huh? I'm here for it
Also, have you heard of Ye Banished Privateers? They seem very.up your alley, I think you could do a killer Fisher Lass cover
Still waiting for him to do the song from Sharpe, “O’er the Hills and Far Away” 😂😅
Wow I love your covers mate! Great great job! Carry on please and bring us more joy! All best for you pall : D
I enjoy your covers of sea shanties. Please do more.

I just know that those songs would fit your gorgeous voice so perfectly! ❤
They are both just deep, sad and wonderfully beautiful.
Just like your voice! 💝
I know that a version by you would probably break my heart! 💔
Greetings from a longtime fan, I am usually more of a lurker than a commenter, but I promise I've been here a long time, and I have almost ALL your songs in my playlist!
So I would just love to hear your version of those songs..
