We noticed a rumbling sound while driving. Obviously it was the wheel bearings so we ended up changing them. This is how we did it. Have you had to change your rear wheel bearings?
I'm really getting a lot from your videos. My Hymer is a year older than yours and although the body is a different style, all the Fiat parts are identical to yours, so I am getting a lot of ideas. I like the no-nonsense, no jargon way you guys are explaining things too. The best way to learn things is to watch someone who can do it in his sleep. I don't suppose Chas would be available in West Cumbria for a dozen or so jobs on my Hymer?!?! Ha !! All the best, Pete
Compact the grease into the bearings from the side of the bearing before fitting into the race .Never fill the cavity between bearings in the hub like that the grease will hydraulic when hot .
Great video Annoying when you inspect your own rear brakes and the brake wheel cylinder is leaking happened to me 2 years ago when cleaning and adjusting rear shoes and I only had a day left till mot run out turned into a major rush and my brake shoes the bonding glue had failed and brake linings where lifting off 😂 .I believe the 3 screws on the drum are for winding a 13mm headed bolt into for removing of tight drum when the drum gets a wear lip.another great video ads!
Nice video, you didn't use the new bearings in the freezer trick. I would get that brake cylinder replaced. We didn't know we had a leaking brake cylinder on the back of our Ducato Motorhome, we headed out of the house for the ferry on a Friday night, the brakes didn't feel right at the exit of our estate, 400mtrs down the road at the T-Junction, no brakes. We live in the country, thankfully it was after 7pm, zero traffic. It was hairy, managed to get back using the handbrake and gears. Missed the ferry, jumped in the car the next morning, off to France. Replaced the wheel bearing a month later on the driveway because I couldn't drive it and didn't fancy paying for towing.
Great vid I have just replaced my rear bearings should the inner bearing and race be flush against the step on the hub I have a gap about half inch I am supposed to be going on hols today thanks
Hi Roy, the race should be all the way into the hub. There shouldn't be a gap behind the thick end of the race. On ours the thin end of the race was below the outer most edge of the hub. I hope that makes sense.
Those 3 holes are used to remove the drum. Insert 3 M10 bolts, those bolts will remove the drum by pressing against the hub. No need to hammer or pry the drum.
@@HermanHitstheRoad haven't seen that one. Thanks for this kind of videos. Together with the Peter Russek workshop manual, I've been able to do a bit of work myself. But, man, working in a van is hard work!
Don't worry about that, Wendy. We've been out loads of time so far this year (all videoed of course) and this week we'll be in Devon 👍👍 Have you been able to get out yet?
How should I know if my wheels need this? approx. how many miles were on Herman when you needed to do this? Asking bc I may be able to head out soon, but one nagging thing is that my wheels are a bit side to side loose. All of them about the same slight left / right (9 & 3) wobble when jacked up. Mechanic says I should try tightening down that inner nut. Other motorhome folk say that a little wobble is par for the course with the ducato and over tightening can cause damage. What say you?
@@HermanHitstheRoad awlright just as soon as I find a spot to take off my tire and give the back wheels a jiggle. not so much fun in 2 degree drizzly weather.
@@HermanHitstheRoad ok. i lifted my back wheels at the garage today and yippee they are fine. no movement side to side or up & down. But those front ones.. I guess they may need to be replaced.. some day! I figure they'll work to Morocco. Just 3000km away. A hop & a skip. Nobody around here seems capable of 500 Newton meters of torque.
@@HermanHitstheRoad turns out that the back wheels are just fine. So it's just the front two that have a bit of a wobble left and right. Cowboy mechanics that is totally the wrong way to put in and grease up new bearings! You put the grease in the bearings before fitting and don’t over fill the hub with grease
Ok Ads please see comments from DucatiRichie and Geof although I won't call you cowboys Keep an eye on that rear seal now hub cap will hold rear seal ????? Love your videos when is Zoe going to appear in her boiler suit
The bearings were not packed full of grease. You need to physically, by hand, wedge as much grease as you can into the races rather than putting them in dry and hoping that they will be greased by an overly full hub....
I'm a mechanic off over 40yrs there's no way you refit the bearing when your found that leaky wheel cylds easier to change the brake shoes etc and there's no way you fit the bearings and then take it for a drive with faulty brakes

Good job ads. Not a glamorous job but essential. Really enjoying this series-very informative and perfect for the winter.
Thanks Allun13, are you planning on doing some fixing this winter?

Hi Crusty, thanks for commenting. This was the whole reason for doing the videos. We're planning to do more videos in the future
Excellent, comprehensive video. Hoping my rears just need tightening
Thanks again.
Thanks John and good luck 👍 👍

Exactly. In stead of stuffing the hub full of grease he should have packed the races with grease.

Mark, did you manage to fix the brakes and pass the MOT? Better that than going on holiday and finding out. We fix them in the next video
Another informative video. Looking forward to the next one with the new brake cylinder 👍

Thanks for that problem solved it is sorted now after many many calls and great help from Martin at coastal motorhomes

Hey Herman, you got a video of how to replace the front wheel bearings on a fiat ducato x
Hi Wendy, Ads here. Herman is the motorhome 🤣. Not yet. One bearing had an advisory last MOT so we'll have to change it sooner or later.

I was always told these tapered bearings without the central shim SHOULD have some end float play, around 5 thou.

We could hear a rumble coming from the rear. You could try tightening the rear hub huts, but don't over tighten. Our wheels don't move.

Oh yes, I remember now. Yes, it does look like the Falcon 👍🤣
The hub only needs to be filled half full.
Thanks Michael. Half full or full I don't think it really matters so long as there is plenty in there.
Does grease help the brake linings lol
I don't follow you, John
dimension of the inner bearing please
Sorry, I can't remember, @tilisoro
What Yr of ducato is that?
Details are in the description, corrigeen

Totally agree, not the way I was taught.
I agree and the bearing is too tight
Not to mention the leaking cylinder no mechanic worth anything would even put the brake drum back on with a leaking cylinder

Thanks Henry. That's in next week's video
so the mounting of the rear bearing is a total failure !!!! upatlane kde co. no mechanic would do that

Sorry this is not how to do it fill the hub with grease is pointless and he didn't pack the bearings you will be doing these again soon
The bearings were packed, MegaDyte and there was no mess
The bearings were not packed full of grease. You need to physically, by hand, wedge as much grease as you can into the races rather than putting them in dry and hoping that they will be greased by an overly full hub....
