The Huawei P20 Pro comes with not one, not two, but three cameras on its back: a 40-megapixel main one, a 20MP secondary black&white shooter and a third, 8MP telephoto camera. But how good are they?

If you don't know how to shoot with huawei p20 pro doesn't mean it is not good in good light condition.
Just simply turn off AI and the result would be great .. also for even better result you need to change some setting in some situation then you will get very close to DSLR results.
It is not always point and shoot phone though i admit .. sometimes ( 1 out of 20 times ) you need to change some setting a little bit
Im going to buy soon p20 pro 💋❤
you may do camera comparison when disabling AI crap feature. Hope you do this
I'm trying to choose between the P20 and the Honor 10. Which would u recommend in terms of its camera?
The one with the photo results closest to reality is the best. Not the one with some better color representation and more pleasing to the eye.
The 2013 Xperia Z has the ability to recognize scenes, does it mean it has AI?
For a phone this hyped it's quite disappointing to not have 4K stabilization, even à 350€ phone does have this feature...
Exactly. Sony's Superior Auto Mode basically did the same thing, yet no one even mentioned it back then. Now, many renowned reviewers are hyping this camera up like crazy! Huawei must pay handsomely.
Liion B Sony's Superiour Auto chooses different shutter speed, ISO and WB settings according to the change in shooting scenerios and is entirely software-based whereas Master AI on P20 Pro changes post processing (sharpness, saruration) and activates different shooting modes when required. It also uses the dedicated NPU inside Kirin 970 to improve recognition accuracy and speed. Similar idea, but quite different in terms of what it does.
I clearly know that, that was just to put things in perspective.
Superior Auto can also activate the appropriate shooting mode when required (HDR for example).
Sony chooses what matters whereas Huawei at the moment just "ruins" the pictures when it detects a scene, this is obvious when in "greenery" mode for example. I can take all my pictures with Superior Auto on, but I'll turn off Master AI on the Huawei immediately.
The only "AI" thing I've seen until now is from the Honor 10 which can separate different "scènes" in a picture but the final result is again poor because of the processing (boosting colors, saturation, shapness…).
Liion B
Except whether it is "ruined" or not depends on personal preference, actually. Tech enthusiasts like us and photographers prefer to have more natural looking photos with more realistic colours and detail rendition so find heavily processed photos uncomfortable, while many of average consumer who constantly posts their photos to SNS will appreciate this colour+contrast boost. Those people will just apply bunch of heavy Instagram filters on their photos anyway, so they wouldn't care, or even appreciate it because it could save their time they would otherwise spend editing those photos manually. I would turn it off too, but it's just what I prefer to do. Huawei still doesn't have a brand recognition of Apple or Samsung, therefore they need to appeal to normal people rather than focusing on enthusiasts and making niche products in order to sell more. And so they are putting features many people prefer to have.
It is, to a certain degree, Huawei has gone too far with it. Other phones also increase saturation and sharpness, but it is way more "watchable".
I don't know how people would like to have a constant Instagram filter on their pictures, that's interesting.
If people are fine with it, I'm happy for them, but it is not the best camera available as some people would make us believe it is.
Can someone please tell me which phones have the very best stabilization in 1080p, as of today? (Better than Xperia Z5, if possible)
Thanks!
S9 and P20 Pro if you want to just shoot in 1080p. For 4K S9 all the way!
Lots of hate from brand phone fanboys. I come from using the Galaxy series since S4 and I´m loving the P20 Pro.
Looks like Huawei is so innovative when it comes to the camera
Camera of the year.
Hey! Man I am buy p20 pro
20 years later a review comes out for this phone !
Would have been nice to see at a pixel level what the 40mp was capable of..
I suspect. No diff.
P20 pictures seems to produce much more accurate colors and contrast!!Not punchy at all-looks better to me compared to funkier ones. Has less noise compared to that of s9+,iphoneX and google pixel 2.Produces much better images in portrait mode than others and much better photos in low light. For pictures and videos this seems to be the best.
If you want 4k video you need a gimbal, because P20 Pro doesn't support stabilisation in 4k. Also, front camera is very bad, very very bad. Pixel 2XL is superior compared to this. P20 Pro only wins with zoom and details, but what Ai does for photos is very bad, especially when you want a photo of your family, your faces will come unnatural. Pixel does better job still here.
It's so cool
Good work from huewai
So cool
Why it seems that iPhone x is most realistic and natural even at the night , I mean train, and background is over brightened in p20 and iPhone x shows what it looks like at night with naked eye
I want the camera(s) PERIOD.
Mate 20 all the way
I'd rather the photos on the p20 pro and dial down the sharpening afterwards than the dull and lifeless photos of it's rivals that won't look better when you increase the sharpness afterwards.
The p20 pro looks better in all these examples
We've literally seen the phone recognise animals and food. What is this guy talking about. Even LG is adopting the technology too. As one of the last reviews I thought you'd have better points.
If it did not over sharpen it would be a lot better
4k is pain though ... Hope a software update solve this issue
it's because of the Kirin 970, I don't think they can do anything about it, you probably need to wait for the new chipset
Or you buy a 15 dollar stativ and promlem solved
Kirin 970 can't do eis with 4k 30 fps?
So why dxo gave it the highest ranking then..r those guys at dxo crazy...i dont agree with you Phone Arena..its your opinion..i get it....
I think they got 'sponsor' from Huawei, they have history doing so (www.theverge.com/2018/2/12/17005798/huawei-fake-reviews-best-buy-mate-10-pro-phone), I almost bought this phone, but after playing with it at the store, i was utmostly disappointed at the camera, it takes horrible photos, I'm so confused but after watching many reviewers they all said the same things, way underexposed way oversharpened, ... the only good thing about this phone is the zoom and the night mode (but you need to hold for 4s though) which I rarely use ...
Exactly my point, don't like the camera at all :) Best review on the camera so far, good job!

Huawei p20pro win
So DXO were paid off then , what works in a lab doesn't work so well in the real world. Recommend Turning off the AI. The main focus of The Huawei Ad is The world's first triple lens smartphone, with AI assistance. Excellent just negated one of it's biggest selling points.
Derek Drummond Master AI is for AVERAGE consumer who want heavily processed photos, which they can upload to SNS, out of the camera without any further image tweaking. If you're not one of them and cannot appreciate the feature then just turn it off, I mean that's what I would do if I had this phone.
