  • This Bible study devotional covers Genesis chapters 17-18:15. Here we see God give a new sign of his covenant to Abraham - circumcision. We also see God change Abraham's name.
As always, we are committed to showing you how Jesus fulfills these specific passages. In Genesis 17-18:15, we see that Jesus fulfills the sign of circumcision and gives us a new name.

It just seems odd to me. Doesn't quite line up with other stances. With every other issue on our bodies, we're told that God made us this way for a reason. Some go more extreme, saying medicine is bad, tattoos and piercings are bad, and even now, that genital mutilation on girls is bad... but somehow, none of that applies to circumcision.
It just seems like a huge cherrypick to me. Other parallel issues are treated differently, for no discernable reason. Does anyone else wonder about this?

It seems odd because it is odd to take this stance. Abram was instructed by god, was marked showing that bloodline that will produce Jesus, the blessed one. What has that have to do with us in our current day? Also would like to point out , in this scripture, Abram has slaves. Also hope they do not eat shrimp, or pigs. Do they think they have a special coven with our Most High Lord?

    BERĔSHITH (GENESIS) 17
1And it came to be when Aḇram was ninety-nine years old, that יהוה appeared to Aḇram and said to him, “I am Ěl Shaddai - walk before Me and be perfect.
2“And I give My covenant between Me and you, and shall greatly increase you.
3And Aḇram fell on his face, and Elohim spoke with him, saying,
4As for Me, look, My covenant is with you, and you shall become a father of many nations.
5“And no longer is your name called Aḇram, but your name shall be Aḇraham, because I shall make you a father of many nations.
6“And I shall make you exceedingly fruitful, and make nations of you, and sovereigns shall come from you.
7“And I shall establish My covenant between Me and you and your seed after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be Elohim to you and your seed after you.
8“And I shall give to you and your seed after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Kena‛an, as an everlasting possession. And I shall be their Elohim.”
9And Elohim said to Aḇraham, “As for you, guard My covenant, you and your seed after you throughout their generations.
10“This is My covenant which you guard between Me and you, and your seed after you: Every male child among you is to be circumcised.
11“And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall become a sign of the covenant between Me and you.
12“And a son of eight days is circumcised by you, every male child in your generations, he who is born in your house or bought with silver from any foreigner who is not of your seed.
13“He who is born in your house, and he who is bought with your silver, has to be circumcised. So shall My covenant be in your flesh, for an everlasting covenant.
14“And an uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, his life shall be cut off from his people - he has broken My covenant.”

The apostle Paul writes in Galatians 5:6, "For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love." What God is looking for is not whether one is circumcised or not but if one is living by faith and practicing His way of outgoing concern. Not only is circumcision not required, it is immoral. Every man has the right to experience life with the body created by God, not altered by man.

And if they did need a constant reminder, why did it need to be marked in their flesh? And why did such a mark need to involve the destruction of functional erogenous tissue? And why do it to only one gender? And why do it to infants who can't consent? And why do it without any anesthetic which obviously makes the cutting extremely painful (and we know the negative effects of childhood trauma)?

Hey MNM! Great question. As a practicing Jew, yes, Jesus would have been circumcised. And the book of Galatians addresses your exact question.
The simple answer (that Paul spends his entire epistle answering) is that faith in God's promises had always been the "mark" of a true believer. Circumcision was merely an outward sign of a more important inward act of trust. Paul says it really simply near the end of his letter. "For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love" (Galatians 5:6).

In the Old Testament of the Bible, it was important that they got circumcised, it was a covenant and law between God and Abraham to set him apart from the other nations around him and a symbol of what was to come through Christ. He was commanded to pass down this to his descendants.
Many Christians still get circumcised today but it's no longer a prerequisite because Christ is the fulfillment of the law, in him the entire law is fulfilled also salvation isn't by works like circumcision, doing good deeds and things like that even though they are all good, they won't replace believing and accepting Jesus as the Son of God.
Salvation is solely by grace through faith and not by works, it is the gift of God in Christ Jesus. I hope this helps.

Yes, I think you are missing a few things:
      (1) The Bible doesn't say anything. Books don't speak. The various authors of texts that are included in "the Bible" shared their own personal opinions. If you choose to have faith in the absolute veracity of the personal opinions of dozens of ancient men whom you have never met then that is incredibly naive.
      (2) If God "intelligently designed" the human body "in His own image" then obviously He never commanded circumcision. If he commanded circumcision then obviously the human penis isn't so "intelligently designed".
      (3) If God commanded cutting up baby dicks and didn't give a command to use anaesthetic (and instructions about how to make and administer anaesthetic) then not only is such a God not an "intelligent designer" but He has no compassion. Indeed, the Jewish and Christian God sounds more like Satan.
Cutting up baby dicks is obviously something done by psychopathic perverts. But if you want to believe in a religion created by psychopathic perverts then that's your choice.

That, and also the "Old covenant" says "Everlasting" so either their god is a liar or it is still ongoing and it goes along side the second covenant.
When I say that religion is often the root of all evil I understand that there are exceptions, but things like racism, slavery, genocide, genital mutilation, and blood sacrifices are all things that are almost entirely due to or backed by religion.

Some early Christian Jews thought Gentiles needed to convert to Judaism (and the men be circumcised) in order to become Christians. Paul disagreed: he thought Gentiles could become Christians without converting to Judaism first.
And that is indeed why his form of Christianity spread through the Gentile world. If he had believed circumcision was required, Christianity would likely not exist today. (It certainly wouldn't be the largest religion in the world.)
"That, and also the "Old covenant" says "Everlasting" so either their god is a liar or it is still ongoing and it goes along side the second covenant."
The first "covenant" was with Abraham and his descendants. Are you a descendent of Abraham? Are any Christians descendants of Abraham? Maybe Messianic Jews are, but I doubt most Europeans and Americans and Asians and Africans are descendants of Abraham.
Also, the Abrahamic covenant isn't even legitimate:
      (1) According to the Documentary Hypothesis, a standard scholarly theory about the Torah, the circumcision story is a later addition. In other words, it's a total fabrication (like much of the Bible).
      (2) Even if it was based on a true story, a covenant is a contract between consenting parties. Babies can't consent so there is no valid contract.
"When I say that religion is often the root of all evil I understand that there are exceptions, but things like racism, slavery, genocide, genital mutilation, and blood sacrifices are all things that are almost entirely due to or backed by religion.
I'm not suggesting that mass murderers are religiously motivated, just that religion makes good people justify doing bad things "in the name of God"."
Religion makes good people do wicked things, and it also makes wicked people do good things. It cuts both ways.
Almost all of us do harm to others (and even to ourselves), regardless of our religion or philosophy. And there are as many sociopaths and psychopaths outside religion as there are inside religion.
Some ideologies (religious or political or philosophical) are more toxic than others. Toxic ideologies exist because of toxic humans. Suffering is due to human ignorance and weakness. To the extent that people are spiritually enlightened, they will not cause harm to others (or themselves), and to the extent that they are not enlightened they will wreak havoc in the world.

The letter J didn't exist until the 14th century, yet this Jesus character was long dead by then. There's a character called Isis before the 14th century. Did ISIS turn into Jesus or was Jesus made up. Please if anyone answers this, just facts, no calling me a devil worshipper for pointing this out. I don't have time for people who have blind faith.

The Father is good towards His creation, therefore, the command to circumcise is not immoral, abuse, or abolished. We are to obey God rather than men.
