Thank you very much for the detailed video ❤, I have been reading on the forum as well and got my actuator repaired and installed back, The issue started when I parked the car on sloppy drive and when i went back and unlocked the car by key fob i heard a very loud noise!!! Jumped in the car and start it the parking brake has locked and i could not move the car, therefore i used the emergency release in the back. When back home took the module off 1- the cable with the screw was all the way in and so tight, 2- the relay was a bit melted So what i did i gave changed the relay and reinstalled the module back ( cleared the code , still same loud noise and the brake locked), I took the wheel out and adjusted the brake shoe to make it more tight and 🎉🎉🎉 the parking brake works great now ❤
Thanks Aveman1, I had a bastard of a job. It appears that the actuator gear box had seized so I had to cut the original actuator to bits with a Dremel so I could back out the RH side bowen cable. I went the way of leaving the bowen cables intact with the car on ramps and wheels on. Ended up being a 5 hour job, maybe if I had removed the wheels, brake rotors and shoes I could of removed the old actuator with cables attached and installed my replacement actuator. Probably around the same amount of time. FYI, I didn't code the replacement actuator, I pulled up on the brake switch for 15 seconds then depressed the switch for 15 seconds. That reset the Park Brake error light. Thank you for all the effort you go through to show us DYIers. Cheers Gaz
More to my experience:: The reconditioned actuator failed. I bought a new BMW OEM actuator. This time I went the removing the wheels and rotor pathway. Mush easier and less time consuming also it gave me a chance of inspecting the park brake shoes. The only advice I can give is still undo the right hand side (drivers side for right hand drive vehicles - Australia, UK, Japan etc) bowen cable from there actuator which aids in getting the cables positioned as its a short cable. It's the side where you see the blue clip and pick in the vid. Cheers Gaz
gazpixs did u pulled the brake switch while the engine is running without holding the brake ? or while holding the brake ? today my car stucked in gas station. i had to release it manually.
Thanks for the video. Car was stuck in park and this help me. I thought for a second man I gotta get a tow truck and Uber for my family to get home. Really appreciate this video just save some money using your guide on resetting the parking Break❤
Update: Finally got INPA software & cable to work on Windows 7. Cleared all errors & it’s now working. Thanks to your video & all the kindly hearted guys sharing their experiences. My brake malfunction is clear & working again. Spent at least 24 man-hours on changing the actuator, setting up software, error reset, but I’m so freakin’ happy. The family & neighbors think I’ve gone nuts for cheering myself so loud. Woot!!
Update: The refurbished unit from “Chainaa” courtesy of EBay failed already. Buyers beware!!! Bite the bullet & buy genuine brand new replacement. At least the 2nd time around should be easier, plus I need to change the rear brake pads anyhow.
@@Otrebor0707 Did you have to code it to make it work? I just installed a new one from amazon (using the old cables) and I get no change even after depressing the park switch. Basically nothing happens and I still have the parking brake malfunction error.
Albert Gavieres I had to use INPA software to reset the error. I think there’s compatibility issue with refurbished parts. 2nd time changing it with brand new unit, it reset the code without using software, but I had to give the VIN to the dealership. So they must have coded it before shipment to me.
For those who are removing the cables with the actuator, it can be difficult to couple the big rubber piece on the cables back onto the respective bracket on the frame. Raising the suspension with a jack can provide some slack on the cable to make that part of the installation significantly easier.
Thanks for the video. Lots of help. I ended up disconnecting cable from brakes anyhow. I had a hard time disconnecting the driver side Bowden cable because it would not pull out far enough to turn the square nut. Tried with just passenger side cable disconnected, but had a hard time reconnecting to the replacement unit after placing under the car. Finally, refurbished unit from eBay all installed with cables that came with it connected to brake shoes & all components put back together, but still getting Parking Brake Malfunction after trying all they reset combinations with pushing & pulling on the brake switch with foot on the brake pedal while car is running. The eBay seller said there’s no need to code & unit was tested before shipping. Pretty disappointed after spending all weekend on this. I ordered the scan & coding software & cable. Will try that as last thing before going to the dealership. I’ve checked the connector, fuses, & cables & found no issue.
Your incredible video and the thread links have just helped me fixing the exact problem from reinstalling the cables to encoding the EMF for my 2007 E70. Thank you so much.
Thank you! I watched your video and it saved so much time. Once it I finished I started the car and the "Parking brake malfunction" disappeared. I got lucky and didn't have to do any coding.
big fan of your channel !!! just a quick update since the last comment i posted. I successfully changed the actuator, brake shoes, rotors and pads. thank you so much for sharing your experiences and skills
Question is was the programming with NCS truly even necessary? or did the car recognize a functioning part after the install? Was it the Pressing down 15 seconds that it took to reset it? Not really clear. please let us know... I'm about to undergo the same process. Thank you. Very good video.
When I get to that part 38:46 the FA doesn’t pop up it gives me an error do I need to update any files I did that just now and everything seems updated but still won’t read the ECU’s. It does connect to my car just gets an error after I get to that part selecting the chassis
Back in the days with my 2005 750i, same thing happened, but this module sits inside the trunk so it’s easier to work with. It is a much heavier metal box and the problem is serviceable. All you have to do is to replace two plastic gear with a metal one from China.
I would highly recommend attaching a string to the trunk release and pulling it back with the string Also when you are done check fuse 94 (rear fuse box) I must of blown mine when putting everything back together
I had the same issues as you all, message on screen, dining warning, red and orange brake light continuously on the dash. I tried all the fixes mentioned here and on youtube with no success. Then purely by chance and frustration I had the car in drive crawling very slowly and I simply turned the engine off which stpped the car suddenly and automatically engaged the parking brake. When I turned it back on NO WARNINGS, NO DINGING. NO ISSUES. Everything had reset itself and is working perfectly!!!!! That was 2 weeks ago and it is still working as it should. I can't go back and do it again but maybe someone would like to try and confirm or deny? Good luck as I know how frustrating this issue is.
Very useful and easy to follow information. The camera work the other hand was rubbish and the stupid work like kept getting im the way. Get ya self a head lamp and chest mount for ya camera. Each time you'd let the camera focus then almost remove it straight away once it had focused, didn't get time to see what I was looking at.
You just pulled the Bowden cable off the back of the hub that attaches to the handbrake clip. Mine is corroded into the hub, how do release it, Ive tried Wd40 and a heat gun, some moles grips and it aint budging...
Hi, My EPB on rear left caliper is not engaging and I am going to replace the actuator. I guess I don't need to retract the piston or something like that right? as the parking brake is not activated so can I simply replace the actuator without any retraction and scan tool?
Thanks a million again. I ordered the same unit as you did. It was easy to tell that it wasn´t new, but a refurbished one. I also noticed that it´s quite a bit tighter space in the back, with the adaptive drive being in the way of the unit. Now all that is left is the coding. Typically my bmtechnic software have stopped working, so I have to figure something out. Anyway, keep up the good work, and please share if you have anything for the e70 x5.
Hey no problem, glad it was helpful. For the heck of it without coding did you try to pushing down on the button to see if the unit responded in any way? Considering it's refurbished and they make no mention of needing to code it in their listing I wonder if the unit is even vin locked. When I made this video I didn't try pushing down on the button only tried lifting it up but it turns out you need to push down to get it to engage for the first time. Worth a try but otherwise just look up tutorials for setting up NCS Expert. That's your best bet to encode the vin.
+Try Arn Ah crap, what method did you use to install the module. Complete with the cables or you kept the cables on the car and screwed them into the new module? I'm thinking maybe your shoes or adjuster is seized and maybe not moving smoothly. If you can setup DIS on your laptop you can see the force level while you actuate the module to get an idea if the module is to blame or something is up with your car. seems odd that you're getting the same problem with the new module.
I installed it with the cables on, as I did not want to make a mess of fitting them again (to eliminate a source of error). The parking brake shoe assembly did look okay. I haven´t gotten the softwares working yet (but the module does not work at all anymore, had to use the emergency release to use the car). The noise was the same when it died, but before it died the "new" module made some sort of clicking sounds (that was why I tried it a few times). They offered to send me a new one quite reasonably, so if they follow up on that, we`ll try again. I ordered new oem bowden cables and a service kit for the brake shoes just to be sure next time.
+Try Arn Okay might have been the gears in the new module. It's good that they will be replacing it for you. Hope you have better luck with the new one. There is a force sensor that is built into the module so it's supposed to stop trying when it senses too much resistance.
I had a broken Bowden cable and replaced it. Get the vehicle may roll error now. When i press down on it to reset it the motor just keeps running until the cable is completely out of thread. Any idea?
question, i have the iDrive system on my same car upgraded to the new one, so will i have to replug all the old parts in order to do the coding thing for this part as i need to replace it apparently? best regards
Hiiii sir. I just have the same problem información my BMW X6.. i just got my new parking brake module.... My question is... The NCS Expert works just for inputing the VIN on the new module?? Or it is for programing the new module??? The point is that i want to know if i can install it without using the NCS Expert??
@relebogilemanamela2907 thus was a while ago. I had to open up the unit and remove the cables still in place. Didn't work as the new unit broke, resulting in it going to the garage. They had to 'force' out the old cables and mounts then put another new unit in.
Very useful, thank you. I have a F01 with the same problem, and whilst it is not the same car, pretty much everything seems almost identical. I will give it a go, better than paying my local BMW stealership £1500+ to do the work for me. It's fiddly it seems, but not overly complicated.
Thanks so much for this video, I've downloaded INPA and running NPS Expert, but the drop downs are not the same as what you show when configuring the brake actuator module...are there E70 specific files that I need to download for INPA and NCS Expert to work?
Its much easier to get to if you undo the 4 swaybar mounting bolts and lay it down on the exhaust (jack from the jackpoints in front of wheels), then just undo the 3 13mm bracket bolts and pull the whole unit.
top job ! how about changing the roof lining and rear quarter panels as they appear to look rather grubby but may just be the camera angles ? and in regards to the boot carpet they can be bought off Ebay for £20 delivered ! also it may be an idea to buy a rubber boot tray liner also available off Ebay for £20 delivered, i always buy one of these to protect my boot carpet from damage as i carry a lot of tools and paints ect.
Thanks, I only know that the problem was the circuit board. I suspect it was damaged due to low voltage as I was having a problem with my battery and on a number of occasions the control modules were subjected to low voltage.
This is a great video you have on here, when I went to remove the cap on the side with the emergency break there’s no square black piece for me to turn clockwise in order to remove the Bowden cable, have you ever run into this issue?
Hey boss, great videos! Appreciate every single one! Just have a quick question…what happened when you tried getting into gear? Mine seems to go into them fine, but the car doesn’t move when I give it gas. Followed by almost like plastic gear grinding when I try putting it back into park. Is that the same issue as this? Thank you so much! Long time viewer and subscriber.
Aveman, please could you the files and software and Daten Files for bmw E71 needed for the NCS expert as I'm keep getting an error like FA: +OKOS as soon as I choose CAS and click OK. Much appreciate it man!
When you execute the job it doesn't write vehicle VIN. LOL. You program module to default settings that are matching the FA of your car(vehicle order), nothing else.
Hi Should the new Actuator motor turn each time the handbrake switch is pressed/released if it's plugged into the connector or does it need to be fully installed with Bowden cable's attached. I was testing before fully installing and motor only turned Once? Tried reseting as described but no luck. Any ideas welcome as this is testing the new actuator before full installation.
I just replaced my Parking Brake Actuator on my E70. My question is, prior to coding the new actuator where you getting any response from the parking brake switch? Was the actuator functioning or not? My "new" ebay actuator is not responding to my switch at all and I am waiting on a long enough USB cable to attach to my computer to code the new actuator. I am just worried that this actuator is DOA. Also, thanks for a great video. Very helpful.
I wasn't getting any response from the switch till I coded the module. Other people in the comments have reported that long pressing the switch in the release position is enough for them. I didn't long press the switch till after I coded it so I can't comment on that. Glad the video was helpful for you.
My new module is not doing anything. My NCS Expert did not have all the options as yours and I can`t code as you did . What version do you have as NCS Expert? Thanks in advance
Great video dude!!! Can you tell me, what was the cause of the failure? Did you test the motor inside as that would be a much cheaper fix if it was. I’ve got the exact same fault as of this morning after unlocking the x5 it made a screeching sound.
I Just replaced my defected Parking Brake with a Used one from ebay, do i have to do the encoding since its a used item, not a new not used one? i tried the pressing method, and it failed :|
Adel Omari Yes as a used module you would have to encode it to the car. I show how at the end of the video. What message do you get on your idrive? If it says vehicle may role try pushing down on the button. I'd suspect you will need to encode it with the VIN from your car.
Yes, im still having the same error as before changing the Device! i reset the alarms using hand held computer, but even after removing alarms it continues to show the same old error. They claimed that because its not responding to button pushing method, that this device is defected! i should visit a center who have a VIN and try decoding before changing the device again
Yes you want to write the VIN to the module you purchased to ensure it is accepted on the controller area network (CAN Bus). You can download INPA and use NCS Expert to do that along with the cable I mention in the video. If you're not comfortable doing that then take it to someone that can. Keep in mind that there is still a chance that the module you purchased is defective but you won't know until you write the VIN to it.
Thank you very much for the video !! I have the same problem on my X6. The price is interesting at BMW in France it costs 850 € 900 $ !!! Is your case still working well?
Awesome video, aaaannnd this is one of 50 reasons why I will never buy another BMW, the complexities of this tech is so unnecessary… bye bye X5 life :(
Bro....wow! THANK YOU!! I bought the same module from china last year, installed it but nothing changed. I had no clue I had to CODE it. Thank you so much. Ordered that obd tool. The software you used comes with the tool?
Thank you so much for this video, it is helping me tons! Question for you... If I was to replace just the motor (if it is faulty), would I still have to set the vin to the model? I don't see any links, Do have any recommendations where to purchase a new model if the motor doesn't fix the malfunction?
Hey man hows it going? i just watched this DIY video. I plan on doing this job on my e70 tomorrow, however i decided to open up the actuator and try fixing it before purchasing one from China similar to what you did. i wanted to ask you what i should look for when i do open the actuator, there are pictures online and what not, however i would kinda like to know what the probable cause for it to go is. So i got a parking brake malfunction about a year ago and i went to my technician where he reset the parking brake on his laptop. same thing happened about a month ago, reset and worked fine. But it broke again yesterday. now what happens when it brakes, is that i would be parked on a steep road, and when i unlock the car, i would hear a loud screeching for about 7 sec. coming from under the car, when i turn it on, i get the parking brake malfunction warning light. So what do you think is the faulty part of the actuator? could it be the DC motor or maybe the gears? if you had to guess relying on your experience with this problem and your electro-mechanical background and computers. Oh and furthermore, before the actuator goes, when i do park the car using the Parking Brake, and i unlock it, i hear a small snap, this happens for the next couple of days, till it finals screeches and goes. So that's basically a low down of my issue. i know its quite a read, but i hope to get some insight from you! Thank you in advance.
what did you end up figuring out. Mine is now doing this same thing, and I have a 6034 code for mechanical malfunction. Wondering if this is the actuator or something in the shoe/spring assembly binding up.
@@Jimmy3305 pads were over worn and I think that led to issues with the actuator and force detector. I adjusted shoes which worked for a day. Then the yellow light came on but allowed vehicle to drive which caused the shoes to burn up. Wound up replacing the EPB module, cables, all parking brake hardware with new discs and rear pads. No issues since.
Wow, fundamental design for parking brake is very very old, and works good, BUT why have car manufacturers gone to electronics for actuation!!! Even the actuation is old technology, i.e. A dc motor to move a steel cable. I love the newer X5s but also love DIY on cars, so not a car for me. Unnecessarily expensive and hassle to fix. I have a 2004 X3 and is the best, just prior to them going totally electronic. If possible I would revert this setup to manual, and program the computer.
Let’s see your video on how to do this? I’m going to go ahead and predict you don’t have one nor do you have a life so you sit on your fat ass all day eating Cheetos and feeling self important for critiquing other peoples hard work? Yeah, thought so.....

Its much easier to get to if you undo the 4 swaybar mounting bolts and lay it down on the exhaust (jack from the jackpoints in front of wheels), then just undo the 3 13mm bracket bolts and pull the whole unit.
This was the best way that shows u how to fix stuff
Hi guys. I did the same think but at the end i have an error on ncs expert "sg antwortet nicht ...". Andy idea to solve this pls ?
Beleza. Qual aparelho que você usa pra entrar no módulo do veículo.
How do you get "revtor's as a dropdown option in NPS Expert, my version does not have Revtor's?
Gonna try this, I had my epb replaced and worked but then the light wouldn't go, clear code worked again turn engine off and on and it reappeared
top job ! how about changing the roof lining and rear quarter panels as they appear to look rather grubby but may just be the camera angles ? and in regards to the boot carpet they can be bought off Ebay for £20 delivered ! also it may be an idea to buy a rubber boot tray liner also available off Ebay for £20 delivered, i always buy one of these to protect my boot carpet from damage as i carry a lot of tools and paints ect.
Could you possibly do a video on rebuilding the e brake for your e90?
couldn't be any more detailed than this, thanks pal. By the way did you ever find out what was wrong with your own unit ?
Thanks, I only know that the problem was the circuit board. I suspect it was damaged due to low voltage as I was having a problem with my battery and on a number of occasions the control modules were subjected to low voltage.
How's ppl china module going? Still working?
This is a great video you have on here, when I went to remove the cap on the side with the emergency break there’s no square black piece for me to turn clockwise in order to remove the Bowden cable, have you ever run into this issue?
What year is your car?
Vehicular DIY 2011 X5 35i e70
Hi thank you very much for this wonderful video
Unfortunately as far as I know the only way full test the unit is with it installed in the car.
Think you can't use it before you install it properly otherwise it bricks again the new unit
Thank you so much for the video. Where did you buy the BMW software to get errors and coding the module? Let me know please.
Can you give me the order link ? Thank'u
Keep in mind that there is still a chance that the module you purchased is defective but you won't know until you write the VIN to it.
did u pull or press the brake switch while pressing brake pedal?
Yes your foot needs to be on the brake for it to actuate.
Thank you, nice video! did you buy from china? Can you give me the order link ? Thank'u
Wow, just got the fault code on mine. Thanks for making this video, it is amazing.
How is the chinese part holding up for you, does it still work?
Np, holding up perfectly. I've been using it every time I park to put it through it's paces while it's under warranty. So far so good.
How can I download that program
Check the video description.
Thank you very much for the video !! I have the same problem on my X6.
The price is interesting at BMW in France it costs 850 € 900 $ !!!
Is your case still working well?
MAX DUB Yes it's been working great since I did this video.
thanks a lot for your answer. I will buy it for my x6
Thanks for the video, did you need to adjust the brake shoes to remove the discs?
Np, no I did not. If yours are stuck on you can back off the adjuster through one of the lug nut holes.
Alles Super gemacht!
Great DIY. Thank you.
great video, thank-you. just replaced mine! btw those are the nicest automotive mechanic shoes i've ever seen :-D
Glad you found it helpful. No the software needs to be downloaded. Check the description.
Vehicular DIY thank you, hopefully its not too hard to setup the software
How much did it cost to fix this issue? Thanks
About $350 total.
U the best Broo
thanks for the video, do you mean you bought two control module?
I mean do I need to buy two control module? or one is enough?
Just one refurbished one fixed my issue.
Thank you so much for this video, it is helping me tons! Question for you... If I was to replace just the motor (if it is faulty), would I still have to set the vin to the model? I don't see any links, Do have any recommendations where to purchase a new model if the motor doesn't fix the malfunction?
Great video! help a lots.
Phil melahn, did you find out what was wrong with yours
@@Jimmy3305 pads were over worn and I think that led to issues with the actuator and force detector. I adjusted shoes which worked for a day. Then the yellow light came on but allowed vehicle to drive which caused the shoes to burn up. Wound up replacing the EPB module, cables, all parking brake hardware with new discs and rear pads. No issues since.
Am I the only one here who saw the E30 ///M3 in the background?
Matthew Moore Super rare... my dream ride :,(
Thanks a lot man!
Came here to see the DIY.... stayed to see more of the E30 M3 lmao
Paldies! Labs!
chinese actuator?
I just Ned to code mine
Wow, fundamental design for parking brake is very very old, and works good, BUT why have car manufacturers gone to electronics for actuation!!! Even the actuation is old technology, i.e. A dc motor to move a steel cable.
I love the newer X5s but also love DIY on cars, so not a car for me. Unnecessarily expensive and hassle to fix. I have a 2004 X3 and is the best, just prior to them going totally electronic. If possible I would revert this setup to manual, and program the computer.
Yeah that seems like the trend now days, I guess they don't want people to be bothered with pulling up a handle or pushing a foot brake.
Great video! Thanks alot!
Good luck

Mit Abstand das schlechteste Video das du je gemacht hast. Unscharf verwackelt und viel zu nahe.
Holy cow - someone needs to learn how to edit his videos. POOR!
Oh shut up and be grateful man !
Let’s see your video on how to do this? I’m going to go ahead and predict you don’t have one nor do you have a life so you sit on your fat ass all day eating Cheetos and feeling self important for critiquing other peoples hard work? Yeah, thought so.....
