the side chain explanation you provided is relevant specifically to that fab comp, in general a side chain means applying the gain reduction “intentions” on a different channel i.e. triggering gr on a vocal whenever a kick punch in
Great explanations for things I've only poorly understood until now...hey, I'm mostly a camera and lighting guy...and a special commendation for knowing the proper use of "all intents and purposes".
This is really useful information. I took a sound class before, but didn't really understand much. This actually makes sense. Will still have to play around with it though.
Trying things with your own material is definitely the best way to learn! Glad you're able to put some of this stuff to use, there's definitely a lot of misinformation out there that I'm hoping to get cleared up.
Much thanks, man. I like my Genius microphone (one of those old mics down here in South Africa that works top-notch). My workflow is Equalizer, Compressor, De-Esser. Since I'm working with a pretty old microphone, I sound rather high and I sometimes blow into the mic if I speak, so I first equalize my audio to remove the unwanted noise while making it sound more natural. Then I use the dim-witted compressor to reduce any volume bounces so I don't have to worry about GETTING SCARED of how close I was to the mic then you can't hear me a second later. To top things off, I can use the Low-pass filter and find the right setting to dial down all the unwanted hissing in my audio.
Excellent! However, one video tip since nobody can't give you audio tips :) Just re-frame a little and optimize the head room, which is a little too much. Makes you look smaller. It's standard for every interview shot for example.
All the money I spent on training and all the time I spent practicing and then i finally find this video and I question why I didn’t just watch this instead.
Finally some amazing info from someone who clearly knows what they are talking about because i have been winging compression for over a year now!! THANK YOU!( I was not kidding im about to binge this whole channel) I really hope you did end up making that video about how to make sound dampeners. If you haven't then you need to XD
Your videos are great! I’ve been struggling trying to improve the audio on my UA-cam videos and have been slowly getting better gear, but I’ve been looking for some good guidance on EQ, compression, etc. I’m so glad I found your videos. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to seeing videos on all of the topics you discussed in your intro video ... especially the DIY sound panels!
This channel is incredible! I've been such a novice with audio editing and mixing, and these videos are making so much information make sense. Thank you!
Alex, I'm ready glad you have a channel!! I've watched a loooot of Audio videos and all of them were mishmash of information that only confused me more. BUT this was really comprehensive yet simple that made everything come together for me!! It was so helpful THANK YOU!
Very helpful video and here is my question. if you have a dialogue scene captured from boom or lav mic and ADR too, are you doing the same technique to reducing irritating frequencies for boom/lav mic and adr too or you doing that only for boom/lav mic because adr will be sound much better? Once again very helpful video!
That was really interesting, thanks. Out of trial and error I do some of this in that general order with the compressor toward the beginning. "S" and mouth sounds are such a hassle to deal with.
Love these videos! I’m learning so much! I would love a deep tutorial of using these tools in Premiere.. because I can’t ever seem to get the EQ right.
great video! keep it going. Next time i would love to see you actually edit an audio track to show how you adjust the parameters to a specific track. thanks!
Just watched your recent "noise reduction" video, then poof! gone. I didn't notice any significant problems (though I don't know much about audio!) I have some questions on that topic, so I'll be keeping an eye out for when it goes back up. Thanks!
I have seen your video literally a dozen times if not more. Great info. Thank you so much. I just have to ask though, although you mentioned that those 3 tools can go a long way, are there any extra steps needed to take? Like normalising lets say. I ask from a podcaster/youtuber perspective. What would a complete dialog workflow would be? Thanks!
You videos are so awesome! 🔥 I love all the small details here and there, that are barely noticeable, but really help understanding what you are explaining! 👌🏽
Have you tried the leveler in Izotope RX Advanced? I've been using that for diolog lately. I like the loudness based settings, and built in declick and deesser.
Great question! It definitely does a good job of forcing audio into the right spec, but since it's a destructive process, I really don't find myself using it. For things like UA-cam, it's totally workable. At the pro level, however, we need to retain as controlled and non-destructive a workflow as possible, so we end up using a very different workflow than just a leveling pass.
Hi Alex, I found you through Potato Jet, a while back. Immediately loved your content and subscribed. I really like how you outlined the order of operations (Compressor, DeEsser, etc) and you specified the importance of the order. Your explanations made perfect sense. I really enjoyed that you mentioned an exception to the order...in the case of wind noise affecting the dialogue audio, requiring extra EQ 1st. I don't believe that my compressor (Premiere Pro) has side-chaining built into the plugin. However, Premiere has a multi-band compressor plugin....which sounds like a way to side-chain...like the DeEsser. Aside from wind noise, can you name some other times that you would need to use side-chaining for dialogue? Is the multi-band compressor (or side-chaining) used less for dialogue, and more so for recording music? Thank you for the great video, Alex.
Excellent vid as usual! Cool to see how you use those plugins. I’m definitely looking forward to the denoising vid. Especially when it comes to reducing common issues like room reflections and Lens autofocus clicking, or....pacemaker ticking. ;)
Alex, great channel, I just binged watched all of it. Quick question: if I can't point the microphone (Rode Video Mic Pro) at the talkers' chest because it picks up too much ambient noise from the thing they are talking about (rustling fabric on a table), am I better pointing the microphone at their mouth, and get all of the mouth clicks? Or above their head and lose some richness?
thank you man! I would really really like to see you do this with a low end mic like (rode videomic go/micro) and using only premiere pro/audition to get the same or similar results.
While the aesthetics of those tools (and the mic's audio quality) will be different than the stuff I'm using, the workflow is the same within both of those pieces of software!
Hi Alex, thanks for the great video! For voice over for example, do you also use a compressor during recording? And if yes, is it a software or a hardware compressor? Thanks for your reply
I see you use live plugins while recording, you answered why just now. My question is: do you record a raw back up track just in case you don’t like the results or you are 100% confident it will work each time?
I don't understand about equalizer in music apps, they show dB and Freq. I feel few things while I am listening a song which I want to change like bass or for an instrument pleasant Freq. Then I start to move those dot to top and down and the results...............god knows and results which is against expectations. The main part is for what those Freq refers to and dB refers to, I how should I understand 😬. If possible, a video on this equaliser pls.😀
Alex, what is your order of operations generally for post audio for motion picture or television projects? I’m overwhelmed by the complexity of post sound but thrilled about learning from you.
I am a one man band for my office. I do video production, lighting, and audio. However, I have a VERY limited budget. I have a sound booth, a Zoom H5, and a Panasonic camera (AG-AC30). For mics I'm using Sarmonic Lavs, and a Blue Spark SL for my Sound booth. My sound booth sounds very, well, tinny or for lack of a batter way of saying it... Like I'm in a box. I only have the Adobe suite, how can I fix the "boxy" sound from the sound booth?
I'm a motovlogger, motovloggers ride around on motorcycles with GoPro's strapped to our helmets and microphones in our helmets. We deal with a lot of wind noise, the smart ones try to find good mic placements and use dead cats, but we still have to deal with wind noise,Helmets can be noisy. I have really decent audio, should i try and put a EQ on my audio signal in post to help eliminate wind noise. I have a lot of VST plug ins i can use in my video editing software. Any ideas would be cool to help with the wind noise
That's amazing information ... I have been doing most of that on my channel .. can you also shed some light on using limiter and normalisation in the post process as a part of dialogue processing workflow..or you can just tell me here
Hey man, superb video yet again a great help! MY QUESTION: if I have a zoom h5n, the shotgun attachment, a ride video mic pro and a pair of very cheap rode LAV’s... what’s the best I can do in regard to dialogue for my short films? The wind noise is always insane because I’m pretty much working completely solo!
Unfortunately, I just purchased a Zoom H4n pro :( Any tips on making the most with what I have? I've noticed the pretty high noise floor and also the fact that I need to crank the gain up pretty high for my hypercardioid to reach the sweet spot.
Love this channel. I’ve been asking for more sound-centric tuts for over a year and this is the best. So quick question. I’m recording my son’s orchestra concert (from the audience) and was wondering if I should use my shotgun mic plugged into my Tascam DR-05 or should I just used the XY mics on the Tascam itself? Does it even make a difference? Thanks for all that you’re doing here!
BEST COMPRESSOR EXPLANATION EVER.
Totally !
This is by far the best explanation of compression I've ever seen
Thanks Matt!!
This is an absolutely fantastic video. Thank you for making it for us!
So glad you collabed with potato jet. These videos are exactly what I have been looking for.
This is the best explanation of a compressor I've heard
the side chain explanation you provided is relevant specifically to that fab comp, in general a side chain means applying the gain reduction “intentions” on a different channel i.e. triggering gr on a vocal whenever a kick punch in
ALEX! Good to see you here. Congratulations on your career!
Alex, I'm so glad you started a channel. I'm new with audio and youtube as of 2 years ago and am always learning. I'm loving your stuff . -Will
You know you're a master at your craft when you can explain things to a complete audio novice and make it look easy. Appreciate these videos, Alex!
i need your channel more than you realize you just saved my life. lol.
Haha, glad I could help! Working on more stuff that will hopefully be just as useful.
Great explanations for things I've only poorly understood until now...hey, I'm mostly a camera and lighting guy...and a special commendation for knowing the proper use of "all intents and purposes".

A big help. So much info on video but only a few resources for us to turn to for learning audio. Definitely taking notes on these
Awesome tips Alex, thx for responding to my question ! Looking forward how you do your noise removal ! Keep it coming !
You got it! I'm really curious about how a beard mic would sound...
Thanks, Alex. Taking notes, especially on the order to use the tools.
Much thanks, man. I like my Genius microphone (one of those old mics down here in South Africa that works top-notch).

also level the camera. love the channel!
Haha, I was hoping no one would notice! This is why I'm a sound guy...will make sure I do this for the next one. Thanks!
Dude... wow. THANKS. This video is golden.
Each video more helpful than the last. Mucho Gracias!
Really appreciate your detailed explanation. Hope it can help in making my audio sound much better. Driving me nuts
I've never understood compressors untill now. Thank you.
Great content! Thanks man!!
finally we see audio we always wanna hear, thanks alex!
I can't wait to hear about everything you have to share!
Would love to see how you would do this with tools existing in premier, using their multi band compressor, deEsser, graphic equalizer. Thanks!
damn !!! thanks a lot, man! opened all of ur videos and logic, recorded a sample to work with, and so happy right now!!! thanks a lot!!!
All the money I spent on training and all the time I spent practicing and then i finally find this video and I question why I didn’t just watch this instead.
Excellent explanation! I'm bookmarking this for future reference.

Thanks Matt!! Will definitely be covering more stuff soon, and prepping for the sound panel video. Room acoustics get technical really fast, haha!
I can imagine ... and really looking forward to the videos!
OMG a Master Class here for FREE. I have saved this for more listening when I am with some material. Thank you
Third time watching this video. Still learning from it, I've had questions about EQ, Compressors for a long time, so thank you. Hope to see more!
This channel is incredible! I've been such a novice with audio editing and mixing, and these videos are making so much information make sense. Thank you!
I saw you on Potato Jet's video and had to subscribe to your channel after that. You seem to really know your stuff - thank you for the videos!
Teacher, can you ask for Chinese subtitles in each of your videos? Because I like and need every knowledge you share very much! Thank you, teacher!
Excellent video! Just what I needed for a project I'm about to do.
The EQ part was really helpful and clear! Keep it up!
Alex, I'm ready glad you have a channel!!
I've watched a loooot of Audio videos and all of them were mishmash of information that only confused me more.
BUT this was really comprehensive yet simple that made everything come together for me!! It was so helpful THANK YOU!
Love learning how to get better audio. Super timely for me!
Very helpful video and here is my question.

excellent stuff Alex. Super useful and clear.
Love these videos! I’m learning so much! I would love a deep tutorial of using these tools in Premiere.. because I can’t ever seem to get the EQ right.
This is super helpful and fascinating!
Gesh this will help immensely with my dialog for weddings!!
Useful channel, Alex! Thank u!
This is exactly the content I need to improve my edits. Just know I appreciate the work you do.
Great video.
In the chain of audio adjustments, where would denoise come in?
great video! keep it going. Next time i would love to see you actually edit an audio track to show how you adjust the parameters to a specific track. thanks!

Not everyone can teach as well as this man. Plus he’s an real life expert - perfect combo!
How come you've waited so long to start this channel? Great content!
Haha, I didn't know if anyone would be too interested in sound!
Hi Alex,

Insane timing on this upload, thanks!
Hey I can’t wait for your video on cheap but effective DIY sound absorption panels. Is it gonna come out soon?
You’re a life saver, thank you!
Maybe talk about your de-mud notch on your EQ? Great ep.
thank you so much!!!
Alex, is the man!
Fantastic content👍
This is so helpful! Please keep up the amazing uploads
Holly f! i need to rewatch this on stupid mode: 50% speed :)) a whole lot of good info! thank you
Excellent vid as usual! Cool to see how you use those plugins. I’m definitely looking forward to the denoising vid. Especially when it comes to reducing common issues like room reflections and Lens autofocus clicking, or....pacemaker ticking. ;)
Working on it this week! I think the tools I'll be covering will look familiar to you somehow...
Alex you are a true magician man. I want to book a travel into your mind for voice overs. How can we make that happen? Please reach me out!
You definitely deserve more audience man!!!
Alex, great channel, I just binged watched all of it. Hi Alex, thanks for the great video! For voice over for example, do you also use a compressor during recording? And if yes, is it a software or a hardware compressor? Thanks for your reply
you have an awesome screen presence. you need to go YT full time, make cooking videos or whatever
I see you use live plugins while recording, you answered why just now. My question is: do you record a raw back up track just in case you don’t like the results or you are 100% confident it will work each time?
Love it. Thanks for doing all of this. Super helpful.
Have you ever used Adam A7x speakers? And if so what do you think?
whats a program that gives the beep beep beep before redubing?
Nuendo for the win!

Hi Alex. I like your videos great job, but you need to ask potato jet for some help with video quality.
A noice reduction video would be awesome!
oO0oOh sp that's why your voice sounds so good in my headphones...

5 people all over a large echoy room, only 2 mics (plus the I build stereo ones from the recorder). What would you do?
That's amazing information ... I have been doing most of that on my channel .. can you also shed some light on using limiter and normalisation in the post process as a part of dialogue processing workflow..or you can just tell me here
You just have a mistake about attack and release it in how much you wanted it to reach the full compression or release it but it's working immediately
👏👏👏👏👏👏 great explanation

I'd be glad to hear all your favourite sounds to have a benchmark for my audio quality standards. Just consider.
