It would be ridiculous to call him underrated, you know, considering he was immensely popular, with a plethora of top hits... but I still don't think people realize how good he really was. He made catchy, listenable songs, so it was easy to overlook his very real talent.
@@sadviolinproductions391 here's a little secret...the majority of the 80's music sucked but a few gems survived. Same goes for today, listen for the gems, they will survive and 20 years from now someone will say to you exactly what you just said to PJ.

My god, this is so amazing. Not only one of the greatest drummers of all time, he can also do this. No effects , no bullshit. Just pure talent. Incredible.
He misses a key early on, cringes & smiles, then powers through with a voice that elevates nostalgia like every strand of hair at the back of my neck. Beautiful songwriter, tremendous performer. Live-Aid may be the best live music event since Woodstock . . .
an awesome performance. Check out Patti Boyd Harrison's autobiography. She explains why he was not on his "A" game and why Clapton played the angriest version of Layla she had ever heard. They were all hopped up and hung over after partying at clapton's all night. It was a mad party mad at wives/gf/exs.
He wrote about this in his autobiography. Sweaty hands made his fingers slip on the keys and hit a clam early on. That aside, the rest of the performance, and his stellar voice, kills it.
I love the fact that he grazes that wrong note (I call that jazz..lol)....it makes the performance that much more human. Benjamin Orr (The Cars) makes a few gaffs on the bass-as well as lyrics, in "Just What I Needed" and I actually look forward to them. As a keyboardist in a band, I like seeing that, "yeah....we all have little hiccups". It shows that we're not machines!

It is...last year around the end of March. I was with my child's mother and was doing my best to make it work. Yet, for 3 years...I was to blame for her depression and how I gave her 2 kids that she didn't need. Seeing when we first met she had 2 girls. I stayed through many times where it was rough for us. Tried to do what I thought was right. Yet still wasn't enough. Then last year at end of March. I had to leave them in Canada. I was only on a visitor's pass. Even though I was dual. But with the boarder closing. We didn't want to have me lose my job. I left hoping it wasn't going to last. But it did. And now I'm still blamed for things I wasn't able to control. Told that me leaving was the best that happened to her. Even though there were years of happiness. I miss my children and the ones I helped raise.

@@Hondadctrider no he really made a mistake (which can happen to anyone). If there had been a problem with the piano, the problem would have happened again and Phil would not have continued.
I'm a drummer since the mid 1980s and we all make a LOT of mistakes, most of you in the audience you don't even notice. I can tell you i wish i could play piano too! Phil is great
That mistake and his reaction make the entire video, for me. I love the song regardless, but his performance is that much more earnest for it. In fact, this is my favorite rendition of the song, due to the emotion Phil imparts. And the mistake is part of it, to me.
@@avantesma1 As i said we as musican's always make mistakes, most the time you people in the audience don't notice, that was a big mistake but Phil is primarily a drummer but plays piano very well. Try and sing and play drums or piano or guitar at the same time, it's really not as easy as many think, or don't give it a thought. Try this...tap your hand as a snare drum and your foot as the bass drum and sing any song you like. . 😉
My mum died 35 years ago today and I feel silly still playing this for her every year. I don't always play this song, sometimes I play others. She loved Phil Collins and it was kinda our thing. I hope she knows I didn't forget her and that I miss her every day.

Probably one of the few musicians these days who comes close is Theo Katzman of Vulfpeck but unfortunately, despite the talent, has nowhere near such star attention (jazz not pop)
You really missed out pal! I remember this like yesterday. Phil hopped on a concord after this performance and flew to the United States. What a great time to be an adult back then.

Phil is and was an extremely talented musician and hard working bloke ... I agree with you totally : How can anyone dislike it ? It’s genuine and non manufactured ❤️
At 1:04, Phil Collins makes a mistake, but honestly I point this out because this is what I miss about music. The HUMAN aspect behind it where it shows that the imperfections are what make music great. I’d be more worried honestly if Phil was a robot playing it perfect everytime rather than making a mistake like everyone else. Music is meant to be played from the heart no matter if you make a mistake. Mistakes are what make real music authentic and true and relatable to all of us because it shows how close we all really are. Everyone makes mistakes and it’s what makes every art form or even anything more relatable from person to person rather than having a computer program doing all the work for you. Just pure talent and soul.
I'm an 80's kid as well and for him to make a mistake and then smile and continue speaks volumes about how talented he is. By far, one of my favorites of his next to " In the Air Tonight " !! His music is truly timeless!!!
yeah before he started he mumbled "let's see if I can get through this" ... he knew he wasn't a lock on the piano. He had that one small flub and then was good for the rest of the song. really it just legitimizes the whole performance it was very good.
Saw him live last week.. The man's got old, but boy can he still entertain the audience. And he's still got his voice. It was my first time seeing him live, I'm 33 years old, but grew up with his music. I just had to see him, since everyone knows about his physical issues, I figured this would be my last chance. And I'm so glad I did go. Truly deserves "Sir" in front of his name by now.

back when the movie "Against All Odds" came out, was a teenager hoping one day I'd find a love so powerful. Nearly 20 years ago, me and my wife split for a while, she moved out of state and I was working at a shipyard. As I was leaving the shipyard, the sun was sitting large, low and very red and this song was playing. It inspired me to do whatever it took and not lose hope. We're still together. We LOVE this song. Just let you leave without a trace When I stand here taking every breath, with you, ooh You're the only one who really knew me at all How can you just walk away from me? When all I can do is watch you leave 'Cos we've shared the laughter and the pain and even shared the tears You're the only one who really knew me at all So take a look at me now, oh there's just an empty space And there's nothin' left here to remind me Just the memory of your face Take a look at me now, well there's just an empty space And you coming back to me is against the odds And that's what I've got to face, ohh I wish, I could just make you turn around Turn around and see me cry There's so much I need to say to you so many reasons why You're the only one who really knew me at all So take a look at me now, well there's just an empty space And there's nothin' left here to remind me, just the memory of your face So take a look at me now, 'cos there's just an empty space But to wait for you, is all I can do and that's what I've got to face Take a good look at me now, 'cos I'll still be standin' here And you coming back to me is against the odds And that's what I've got to face, ohh Take a look at me now.
Wasn’t a wrong note as such, it was in a key where all the black notes are played and his fingers must’ve been sweaty and slipped off on to the white one
Accidentally hit the wrong key. I played the piano growing up, this is not a difficult arrangement to play at all, when we mess up we aren't supposed to give it away by making a face. Its virtually impossible to play the piano and sing and never make a mistake. But this arrangement really was on the beginner/intermediate level of piano playing, he must have been very nervous. His singing was on par though no mistakes there.
Saw him two days ago in Minneapolis. Drove 8 hours from Kansas City and listened to his music all the way up there including old school Genesis. His music is timeless. He is the true definition of a legend, and his performance was amazing. I'm still on a high after finally seeing him perform live again! Love, love, love him!!!

Of course.......absoluty!!!!!
Phil didn't "hit the wrong key". The piano was out of tune. All the musicians commented on it, including Freddie Mercury.

It would be ridiculous to call him underrated, you know, considering he was immensely popular, with a plethora of top hits... but I still don't think people realize how good he really was. He made catchy, listenable songs, so it was easy to overlook his very real talent.
First time for me to recognize name of this song.
What a strong voice with sitting and playing the piano.
Phil is really talented.
All it took was a piano and a voice. Those were the days.
Man, such emotion in that song. A classic for all time!!

Hell of a voice for a drummer.
John Black remember watching this with my now wife Phil and queen were the best performers on the day 👌🏻👌🏻🎥🎥
I love the fact that he grazes that wrong note (I call that jazz..lol)....it makes the performance that much more human. Benjamin Orr (The Cars) makes a few gaffs on the bass-as well as lyrics, in "Just What I Needed" and I actually look forward to them. As a keyboardist in a band, I like seeing that, "yeah....we all have little hiccups". It shows that we're not machines!
Wonderful voice and playing. Timeless. The mistake at 1:06 is legendary but who cares. Just smile. Like Phil. A true legend.

How can I just let you walk away?
Just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking every breath, with you, ooh
You're the only one who really knew me at all
How can you just walk away from me?
When all I can do is watch you leave
'Cos we've shared the laughter and the pain and even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all
So take a look at me now, oh there's just an empty space
And there's nothin' left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Take a look at me now, well there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me is against the odds
And that's what I've got to face, ohh
I wish, I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you so many reasons why
You're the only one who really knew me at all
So take a look at me now, well there's just an empty space
And there's nothin' left here to remind me, just the memory of your face
So take a look at me now, 'cos there's just an empty space
But to wait for you, is all I can do and that's what I've got to face
Take a good look at me now, 'cos I'll still be standin' here
And you coming back to me is against the odds
And that's what I've got to face, ohh
Take a look at me now.

01:05 wrong note!!! loved that smile after...
Wasn’t a wrong note as such, it was in a key where all the black notes are played and his fingers must’ve been sweaty and slipped off on to the white one
Yes, a perfect wrong note for a perfect song.
Not a wrong note asshole the piano
Accidentally hit the wrong key. I played the piano growing up, this is not a difficult arrangement to play at all, when we mess up we aren't supposed to give it away by making a face. Its virtually impossible to play the piano and sing and never make a mistake. But this arrangement really was on the beginner/intermediate level of piano playing, he must have been very nervous. His singing was on par though no mistakes there.
Cozette M in his autobiography he said he was so sweaty that his hand slipped off the key causing the mishap.
Saw him two days ago in Minneapolis. Drove 8 hours from Kansas City and listened to his music all the way up there including old school Genesis. His music is timeless. Weird to see the crowd just watching the performance and not trying to capture it all on their cellphone. Those were the days.
Yes the end of a era it was a great time to grow up
Just what i was thinking. Everyone would be too busy doing tik toks or whatever these days.
if they had cellphones they would have been doing that though
They were the best days of my life I wish we had them days back hi from Ireland
The good old days.
No phones, no drama, no fancy shit, just a man, his piano and an absolutely stunning song 😢 adore this track, one of my faves. "how can i just let u walk away, let u leave without a trace, your the only one who really knew me at all"..and "take a look at me now,coz ill still be standing here, and u coming back to me is against the odds and thats what ive gotta face".. heartbreakingly powerful lyrics❤❤
How the hell do you want a phone here since its 1985?
@@FranciscoFJM the point of saying that in my comment was these days ppl go to concerts etc n watch it thru their phone, so back in those days it was a better time to just go and cherish being in the moment!
@@charleyg2032 If filming wasnt a thing you wouldnt be seeing this now.
People recording with their phones are in no way something that should somehow bother you, its their life, not yours
Looking back you realise back then you had to be GIFTED to be someone in the music business.
Amen
So Very True❤️
It's a fact.
I miss those days man
Or at least hard-working. I cannot believe someone like Cardi B could make it these days. It’s just insane.
There is nothing more sincere than someone singing a song they wrote with all the feeling they had when they wrote it
I graduated high school in 85. I saw Phil Collins in concert a couple of years after that. This song's bring me back, he was always my favorite. The man sings like nobody's business and he doesn't need anybody to manipulate it to make it sound good. What I wouldn't do to go back in time and be 20 again
It brings back sweet memories of our younger years..✌️
