  • The glass armonica is an instrument that Benjamin Franklin invented in seventeen sixty-one. Playing it is Dennis James - one of the few masters of the instrument. Franklin was inspired when he saw a player of the "musical glasses."
Dennis James is playing the Lake Music Festival Friday, July 19th. Ticket info is at Rochesterfirst.com.

I listened and almost immediately started to cry! Why? Every sweet note went right through me. I didn't know what it was but the tears just poured out for NO reason...WOW! I felt cleansed when it stopped and I went woe.

Seems you’re not the only one. I understand that the reason it didn’t go anywhere was basically because some musicians went crazy playing it and even audience members apparently became ill, fainted, etc. Must be something about the frequency?

TV coverage of the armonica, so this is informational. Look around on UA-cam, you will find a performance.

The idea of replacing the sewing-machine-like treadle-powered mechanism with a variable-speed sewing-machine motor controlled by the treadle was clearly a genius move, both for the sewing machine and for the armonica.

I got headache from listening to the sound for just a little as 30 seconds. The instrument could be producing some hidden frequency that hurts.
