    That’s my one beef with the seed dealers because we sold seed for years and we used to bitch at the DeKalb people. It’s kind of hard to go to a guys farm in October before he’s harvested and get him to want to order. I never understood why they didn’t start their best discounts the end of November rather than, the end of September. That way a guy could actually see how well things did before he ordered.

      I know exactly what you mean and I agree. But unfortunately that’s when Pioneer gives the highest discounts. BTW, we used to grow DeKalb when I was a kid. We also later planted Doeblers, NC+, (until they changed the name to Crow - why would I want seed corn that sounds like something I want to chase out of my fields?) before settling on Pioneer.

      Yep - if we could just get the weather to cooperate. We've had about 4 inches of rain in the last 5 or 6 days. Just won't quit!

    Mr Charlie this is one of my favorite times of the year watching your videos!! You are SO organized and ahead of the game!! I absolutely love that and enjoy hearing about you being prepared ahead of time!! That heated milk building is a huge asset on the herbicide storage!! Gives me so much to strive for!! Thank you sir for the update!! Look fwd to seeing whats next!! My apologies for being late!! 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️😁😁👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🌽🌽🌽🌾🌾

      Thanks for all the kind words Nelson. They are truly appreciated. I just absolutely hate when it's time to do something and I don't have what I need, so experience has taught me to get prepared. Better for the materials to sit here for a while rather than me wait for them when i need them. The milkhouse hasn't been used for milk since 1987 when we quit milking cows, but I kept the natural gas heater in it due to the water being in there. So, it's a convenient place for the herbicides, and I'm sure you know (or are learning) that it's imperative to keep them from freezing.

      @@pagrainfarmer I am learning your exact words here Mr Charlie. They experience is the best teacher, even if its on the struggle bus!! Yes I had no idea about the freezing aspect until this year. I really appreciate the details you put into the steps it takes. I have and continue to learn alot!! 😁😁👍👍🌽🌽🌾🌾

    It's nice to be able to look at all the essentials before you actually need them. I'm guessing my seed will start arriving next week.

    Great to be orginized and prepared Charlie! I had a choir teacher in 7th grade tell me "a lack or preparation on your part is not an emergency on my part." He was disgusted with a classmate of mine as we were getting ready for a concert that afternoon. This classmate of mine was from a poorer family, most of us in the community were in families struggling financially. He knew he could ask for help getting a pair of pants and a dress shirt through the school. A local church had money set aside to give the school to buy kids clothes. All he had to do was ask in a timely manor and he would have had the clothes he needed. Since then I always did my best to be prepared early, and be extra prepared if I could.

      We are really wet here, too. Since the weekend, we've gotten between 3 and 4 inches of rain. Everything is water-logged. Crazy! I, too, hope it dries out soon.

    Most people don't understand how much work goes in before we even put a seed in the ground, you soil samples every 2 years

    • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  6 місяців тому +1

      That's one of the reasons I did this video, because I think a lot of non-farmers really don't understand all the planning, thinking, and economics that go into it, including soil testing.

    Awesome Charlie, great to be in the position you are, did you mention something about discing or leveling the fields before planting as you said you ready for planting oats when the weather permits or does it only apply's for oats

    • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  6 місяців тому

      I did start doing some discing at the end of last week, but had to stop because over the days since, we've gotten about 3 or 4 inches of rain. That's put a stop to everything.

    I didn't know you had a Gehl baler. So on the map where is the giant cliff?

    • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  6 місяців тому

      I bought the Gehl round baler a few years ago, but only used it once so far. The giant cliff is on the eastern side of the farm, so it would be on the right side of the map the way I had it oriented.

    Even back in the 60s and 70s all we used was Pioneer seed. Is Agway still in business ? Would you know if they sold fertilizer back during the 60s and 70s ? I know we used alot of 10-20-20 but I am unsure of who we got our fertilizer from. We had a dairy farm in Crawford county near Edinboro, Pennsylvania. Good to see you again. Hope you have a great planting season. Spring was always my favorite times of year. I think because I loved plowing and fitting ground. My dad and uncle took care of the planting. I remember being out in the fields until the sun went down. I remember turning the tractor off and just listening to the quiet. Sometimes you could hear the neighbors still at it especially the ones with the old John Deere 2 cylinder still working. Good times and it was simpler times. Those are missed.

    • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  6 місяців тому

      There are no longer any Agways around here. There was one in our local town, about 7 miles from the farm, but it closed up and moved about 25 miles away and became Growmark. Agway did sell fertilizer back in the 60's and 70's. I still do a lot of business with Growmark. Those sure were nice memories you were talking about. Thanks for stopping by. You're always welcome.
