Great tips! I have a few friends who work as extras with Central Casting. It's a great way to just get on set, meet other people, and make some side money too.
Rarely works. I've done all that stuff and no one wants to talk. If you finally tell them that you are a film composer, they change the subject. You normally have to be a family member or a very close friend. Many times even friends will not give you work.
amazing video!!! thanks for all the tips. i just had one question.... im currently in melbourne australia, do you think i should move to LA, NYC etc for uni or wait till i get a qualification (in melbourne) then come up and start looking for internships? thank you :)
Hi Janett! I love all of your videos on youtube...you’re so nice and I can feel your deep passion in the world of film! I have a question to ask you...do you personally think it’s possible for a foreign girl from Italy like me, get a gob in LA as a set decorator or just like a production assistant? I have a pretty good English and I’m going to go to a school film in my country...thank u 💗
giorgia makeup thank you so much! I’ve personally met a handful of people that are originally from different countries that work in the industry as PA’s and as successful department heads. I think it’s definitely possible for you to be successful. I wish you all the best. Good luck!
Thanks for the tips! As someone who is thinking about going to film school in either Arizona or California, I was wondering if networking is easier in CA or AZ? In other words, did feel like you needed to move to CA in order to find work in film?
There is some film and tv work in AZ (or at least there was pre-covid, not sure about now) but it’s not nearly as much as CA. It depends on your goals, but for me, I do feel like I needed to move to CA.
I recommend going to UCLA Extension. It’s about $10,000 for the whole thing. And it’s mainly a great way to make connections. AZ does have some films, and it’s growing, but at the end of the day, I’d start in LA first. AZ just is not the best place to start.
Yessss agree w/ all your points! I currently work as an assistant at a studio and JUST started a channel about my experiences and my overall obsession with movies :) Can we be friends?? Also!! I’M ALSO FROM AZ?? AND ALSO VOLUNTEERED AT PHX FILM FEST BACK IN THE DAY LOL. Small world!!
Hi Janett, I really enjoy your vids. I was wondering if you can expand on what you consider appropriate when networking with other? For example, you mentioned to not walk up to someone and ask "what do you do?" How would you start the conversation? My way so far: starting the conversation - asking others about their education/experiences/advice, offering to assist others if needed (not vice-versa because it reminds me of the business cards you mentioned in the video), being vulnerable and truthful; letting others know I want to learn new things and build genuine friendships. (I'm afraid my way could fit into pestering others for gigs or "what do you do" question.) (I also emailed you last week wanting to ask this (your yahoo account). I assume my email is in your spam, lol)
I wanted to volunteer at film festivals the one in Atlanta especially it’s the closest to me thank you so much for this video
