This video has been a God-sent! I have over a decade of experience and have been having trouble finding work for the past 6 months. I could blame the writers strike, or I can listen to what you said and see the glaring flaws in my overly vague and needlessly diverse resume. catering my resume to the position I'm applying for is such a no-brainer that I cannot believe I'm hearing it for the first time! Thank you so much!
I'm really glad you made this video. When I was first starting out the advice that I heard over and over again was be open to anything. Professors and some professionals discouraged me and my peers from telling anyone what we specifically wanted. They said be open to anything and do everything. After you get in then you can move around to where you want to be. I never thought that made very much sense, but it was very common advice from people who I thought knew what they were talking about. If they're still giving out that advice, I hope your video dissuades people from going down that road and wasting their time.
If you’re trying to get a job in a specific department or position and you have a lot of credits, you should focus on listing the ones that are relevant to the job you are trying to get. Omit the ones that are irrelevant. That helps communicate clearly your qualifications and experience.
My resume is like you said all over the place. But I haven’t had any experience as a cinematographer. I’ve done stunts and I’ve studied film video and computer animation, and of course I filmed with my DSLR Sony camera, but was never a PA. I do wanna work behind the camera though. What do I put on my résumé if most of everything I have is stunts and regular jobs?
Maybe you need to shoot some of your own stuff or help out on smaller projects as a focus puller, 1st AC, DP, Camera PA, etc and get more experience on small scale projects. Take a class on cinematography or work on your skills on your own. Get connected with other camera dept people. Develop a reel. Have your objective clearly state you want to work in Camera and make a shift from stunts. Include the cameras and gear you know how to use in your skills.
Thnxyou so very much, you were of immense help 🙏 I have just finished an film Onboarding class & the CV day left me so utterly confused as I've Produced 3 Indie Shorts, so filled many hats / roles and could not understand why I couldn't mention them?? I started the 1Pager, as suggested (down from 2 + referees) however been literally paralysed with how to complete :-( Your book sounds amazing, I will definitely purchase! Best, Susan
this doesn't just apply to Film; this applies to any general position you apply for. always facilitate your resume that corresponds to the relevant position you're applying for! this can entail having multiple resume's. never just 1.

but last video she said if you dont have industry experience then add all the experience you have
i did everything but all I am getting is no response and mails of over qualifications which is so confusing for me
She knows what she’s talking about. This is very good and detailed advice for anyone who wants to break in the industry.
🤦🏼🙋🏼this guy is guilty. Thanks for the message!
Great video. Why don't you make any new videos ? Thanks
Time! I'll make some more once I can.
Great advice from a beautiful lady :)

Love how down to earth you are!
