some dude did a thumb roll in band class but wouldn't show me how he did it. That was 35 years ago. now I know! thx
I really like this series. Very useful as a composer to get acquainted with all the percussion!

For composing -- how do I notate a shakeroll with staccato drum taps on the quarter-beats?
I'd write quarter notes with tremolo strokes on them and leave the details (shake roll vs finger roll…) to the percussionist playing the piece. Let them work it out from the dynamics you've written!
