Bro I was checking out this video to send to one of my piano students, and I'm all nodding like "good fundamental stuff, I like this" and then when you do that passage toward the end with that modal D natural to E natural subs heading to the Fminor, with the pretty inside voices, I'm like "ahh hell nah now I gotta pause it and get to the piano and figure out what this dude just did." hahahaha beautiful substitutions man I wasn't ready for that. Awesome.
there is nothing i enjoy more than gospel piano/ organ...the subtlety and nuance of it is mind blowing, its music theory from the ether of my African american people......this is my roots, and i feel it every-time a Hammond starts talking!!!!!!!
I find when one has formal training in reading music and then learns to play by ear in playing gospel music, as this person obviously has, the quality is superb and is much cleaner. It just sounds better. God bless you, sir.
Damien Sneed your amazing. How wonderful to hear you play and teach us! That's what my parents grew up with in church. Andre Crouch... Billy Preston..Walter Hawkins..Mighty Clouds of joy...Thank you sweetie..Mom Gramma Kat
Man I cry listening to this, cause God gets into these traditional songs, I don't know what is... you just see them mothers waiving their hands, it's a prayer a deep moan from the soul, I enjoy this God Bless🙏🏿
Basic note training is excellent. YOU should have taught my kids. They all had lessons and only GOD knows what cords they can play today . Refreshing 2020. Thank GOD for Stewarts of music.
This is an outstanding tutorial, young man. It's very clear and direct and supposes the person watching already has a working knowledge of chords and harmony. Many of the gospel how-to videos are not well articulated and spend time on spelling out each chord and not telling how it functions. God bless you and keep up the good work.
Sir, you play!! You have truly blessed me. I search through UA-cam for gospel piano techniques and I'm never really presented with any actual information or anything that is of use to me. But your musicality and sensitivity to the music as well as your factual knowledge behind the theory of what you played truly helped me! I wish you had more videos of gospel piano techniques. Or if I could have a chance to learn from you. I am a uprising sophomore in college for music education. I started on the piano but transitioned to voice being my primary instrument but I have always wanted to learn how to effectively minister on the piano/organ so that I could play in my church! Again thank you for the blessing!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and inspiration! I play at a church, so whatever you share with me gets shared with the 100 or so people that hear it at church too, so, thanks from them too.
Wow.Damien this is great and moving.I had 4 semesters of harmony and can play 10 chopin etudes 3 Liszt etudes and lots of other stuff but i cant figure out the heartfelt harmonies I often hear at church. This was a wonderful tutorial.Today , I think i fell in love with the sacred music of my people.
Thank you so much for posting this video and guiding us through your thought process in making choices with intervals, chords, scales, meaning etc. You somehow managed to pack in years worth of private lessons into a 16 minute video...honestly I feel speechless. God bless you in Jesus' name!
Excellent. When he's playing and calling out what he's doing I'm reminded of that scene near the end of the film version of "Amadeus" when Mozart is dictating to Salieri and for once Salieri has a vision of what it's like to work at this much higher level. : ) Seriously it's great stuff, traditional, sophisticated, and super-tasty. Much appreciated.
Wow, Damien this brought me to tears and pure joy. It was amazing. May God bless you for sharing. You are truly gifted. I would love to hear you play this through without the lessons.
You've got some great gospel, jazz, and classical chops there. Keep it up! I understood your entire video and was able to enhance my technique. Thanks!
What an amazing teacher you are! I taught classical piano for years and started exploring gospel style piano. You explain every step clearly, thoroughly. Thank you!
Something about this music that reminds me of "real" church worship. Precious Lord was one of my mothers' favorite hymns before she past 8 years ago...still miss her dearly...she would love this also... This guy is phenomenal! Wonder how he learned to play like that? Would love to hear full songs by Damien!
YESSSS @4:25 that's when u bout to have church that's what moves u man that trembling of the bass keys...that's traditional in the black church if u listen at Aretha Franklin when she plays she's uses it a lot again traditionally in most Black Baptist churches
A tutorial??? I went in and I have not come back out yet!! Whew!!! If this is a tutorial, I cannot wait to discover Damein the worshipper, the praiser, preacher and pastor!!!!
I played the sax in college but always wanted to learn to play the piano...Damien inspires me to get started...would love to be able to play like that...outstanding!
Thank you so much for this video. It's a really nice condensed package of gospel style and techniques. Your view count is going to go up! There's lots of stuff to re-watch and then work on! Love your playing as well!
08:38 that's an echo of Bach...that proves how monumental and actually "classic" gospel music is at it's core. People often refer to gospel as a sort of transition from classical to folk but it's actually an evolution of really solid classical music.
Warren Roberts he’s referring to the Picardy Third. All music breaks down to Three Blind Mice, so while a direct lineage to Bach is a steep conclusion, it does have some merit.
Thank you Mr. Sneed! I'm going to watch this over and over and check out your other videos too. Then, practice, practice, practice! Thank you so much for the work that goes into making UA-cam videos and for sharing your amazing talent and skills of piano playing, especially your generosity of teaching. Maybe one day I can "take a hymn to church!" My church is the Church of the Brethren, an old Anabaptist denomination like the Mennonites. I wonder what would happen. Ha!
Really enjoyed listening to you play, and your style of doing old hymns in a blues or jazz feeling. I love the old hymns too, and change the chords around to either strum or pick them in my own way, but unlike you, I am not a trained musician, just a country picker. I also love "Precious Lord," too, especially played solo. Thank you for sharing your words and music. God bless.

Damien Sneed your amazing. How wonderful to hear you play and teach us! That's what my parents grew up with in church. Andre Crouch... Billy Preston..Walter Hawkins..Mighty Clouds of joy...Thank you sweetie..Mom Gramma Kat
You're a beautiful teacher Sir. You're basically the guy that I wish I had known for years. Move to Dallas please.
More lessons from him here! ua-cam.com/video/UYhc-vyClpM/v-deo.html
as you are playing this, I can hear the "Amen's " & the "hallelujah"s in my head. Beautiful. Just beautiful.
You are awesome! and may the Lord continue to bless you as you glorify Him in your playing.
Man I cry listening to this, cause God gets into these traditional songs, I don't know what is... you just see them mothers waiving their hands, it's a prayer a deep moan from the soul, I enjoy this God Bless🙏🏿

I appreciate the fact that he's intentional on keeping it true to gospel at it's purest. I love the jazzier versions as well but this is nice!
