- Part two of a likely four part epic, Mainframe: The Reboot Retrospective follows in the footsteps of Linkara's History of Power Rangers, MovieBob's Really That good, and other like minded shows to take an in depth look at a series while giving critical analysis.
In this episode, we look at how the show begins to evolve and decides, with the end of the series likely in front of them, just how they want to show the world what they're really capable of. We also see the start of ReBoot's true venture into storytelling!

Just because people KEEP asking it of me, I'll pin it here so everyone can see. YES, I am working on Season 3 of the ReBoot Retrospective. It is currently half way finished as far as scripting is concerned. Yes, I Am going to be doing Season 4 AKA the Movies. And Yes, I am going to at the very LEAST talk about (If not more) the Video game and comics made for the franchise. I'm trying to get this out for you guys as soon as possible, so please, be patient!

Also The Guardian Core isn't CANON but the TVtropes fanfic recommendations are BETTER than that show!!!
Glad to hear it. so far these two videos are quite watchable.
Just a quick note at the 4:20 mark --- while Phong didn't catch that the upgrade was a fake, he did express brief concern as it arrived:
_"The upgrade has arrived somewhat earlier than I expected."_
Also, the "back story" to Fax Modem's character was simply furthering his parody of Fox Mulder -- in "The X Files," a recurring plot element was that when Mulder was a kid, he witnessed his younger sister get abducted by aliens. Modem was "reading comic bytes in bed," while Mulder was reading comic books in bed.
Man, I do hope you post part 3 eventually. Loved Reboot, a good part of my childhood.
Season 3 is already in the works. It's not going to be another half a year between updates, I assure you!

Found your series randomly. The cliffhanger after this episode is almost as bad as the series's cliffhanger. Looking forward to your season 3 review.
I really do love Reboot. As someone who is now a programmer, a lot of the smaller references to the terminology are amusing, even if they get misused.
Fridge logic moment from my roommate: Phong *DID* read ahead in the script. He's the Command-Dot-Com of Mainframe. What's the name of the studio making the show? MAINFRAME. They kept their files, including their SCRIPTS... in Mainframe. :D
EDIT: Fun fact about that "brotherly" relationship between Hack & Slash, it kind of makes sense. If we overlook the... dubious canonicity of the old Video Game, it features a different minion of Megabyte called "Clash", who at the end of the game, is destroyed, with its remains becoming TWO different minions... Hack & Slash.
Trust me, We'll be getting to the game... eventually. Although if I'm recalling the games 'lore' correctly, that's also where Scuzzy comes from as well, also being a part of said minion.
Been a fan since the first episode cam’t believe it’s almost been 1/4 of a century.
Bit pf a headcanon, here, but since Phong [and by extension, Mainframe] are of older technology, its possible that its much easier for Phong to rewrite himself in order to work around the rules, and the reason younger programs like Bob and Dot don't do this is because they're of newer software and thus can't [this idea is based off the fact that on older software you can actually rewrite the file format simply by changing the file tag at the end, while with newer software this isn't possible]
Huh... I actually really like that idea! I still think it's more that he was used as a loophole for the writers of the show, but I find that explanation to work rather well for an 'in universe' reasons to as why Phong could do the things he could and the others couldn't.
Just watched both Retrospectives in one sitting, awesome work! Can't wait for S3 and the movies.
22:40 Rattrap wasn’t the only character Scott McNeil voiced in Beast Wars, He also voiced Sliverblot, Depth Charge, Waspinator and of course Dinobot!

The episode 'Bad Bob' is also the only reason Fury Road was ever created.
In Denmark they never actually aired season 3 or 4 so for years I believed the cliffhanger ending was the actual end. I don't think I learned about the later seasons until 2004.... Only for it to be replaced with another cliffhanger.....Where all hopes where now finally abolished earlier this week with that terrible looking reboot of the show -__-
On another note. Is the PS1 game considered canon?
Not, it's not considered canon, but it was done by as much of the original creators as possible to make an interesting story. Consider it, at best, to be a 'What if' and I'll be talking about it more in length come the actual end of these retrospectives.

You say that the titles of “Trust No One” are like a horror movie. A better comparison would in fact be “The X Files”, given that it’s a phrase from an X Files opening sequence, styled in a vague reference to the X Files title card (the T being the X in the background).
Yeah, now that I know a little bit MORE about X Files, having never watched the original series, The opening Sequence to 'Trust No One' is actually more accurate to be called a full on homage to an X Files opening. Considering the fact that in the same episode we've got Mainframe versions OF those characters helping out, I should have realized it immediately.

Correct. It was a Canadian production created primarily for a Canadian network.
There is a line in games collide that bugged me, where Bob off handedly talks about why Megabyte wanted to steal game energy because "its the only energy that--" Bob gets cut off and its never answered in the series.
even as a kid all of season 3 and the rest of season 2 with the expection of andra happens because bob decides to leave mike with hex.

I'm working on the script as we speak. It's just been busy in real life, as I've got a full time job and I do this mostly for fun. Heck, I even missed uploading my Let's play stuff today, that's how busy I've been. But yes, Part 3 is coming soon. I'm still working on it. I will do my absolute best to get it out asap!
How do they know what a "truck" is? since when do you see trucks on wheels in mainframe?
Believe it or not, there IS a reason for it! Whenever a character Reboots in a game, they get all the necessary information downloaded right into their brains! That's how they know things that would otherwise wouldn't make sense given the context of their world.
The Power Rangers parody isn't the only thing they're parodying in Nullzilla. It's also parodying the 1960's British Sci Fi puppet series Thunderbirds (Phong using 'FAB' as his password, they layout of Phong's office, and even the way they get to their vehicles is similar to how the Thunderbirds characters got to their vehicles).
i just realized there is no way the reboot of reboot can hold a candle to what this show was about

Loved this show so much. Been watching parts of episodes the last few days. Season 1 was fun but it definitely got better in season 2. More mature and better to watch now that I'm older.

You neglected to mention that Scott McNeil also voiced Dino-bot and Waspinator in Beast Wars. Or did you omit that because Rat Trap's your favorite?
Rattraps my favorite, really. Though that said, if I were to list every single character Scott McNeil has voiced, we'd be here a while simply because the guy has been given that many roles.
Can't wait for the Season 3 & 4 retrospectives.

Are we ever gonna get part 3?
Yep. In fact, I've gotten a lot of work on it this week. That's one of the reasons I've not done any of my Let's Play stuff this week. The other is because KittyKross, my girlfriend, had to go into surgery this week. But yeah, I'm working on it and you'll all get a notice on the channel and my twitter when it's close to completion.
Games merging was a brilliant plot. If a game crashes, some of it may still reside in system memory...thus it never gets flushed completely. So it would make sense that another one could simply 'merge' onto another!
I like the game merging as a plot, it's interesting and shows us something awesome. My problem is more with the fact that for the majority of season 2 (And a little of season 3), the rules of what's ok in a game and what isn't aren't told to us. We end up getting something like the Star Trek Holodeck where a random gas cloud is able to cause issues within it.

I love the videos. It's a great look at one of my favorite TV shows and it's interesting to see the show through someone else's eyes. But the big real question is would you do one of these for Beast Wars ( Beasties)
Perhaps. As it is, I'm not sure if I'm going to do the Retrospectives anymore after ReBoot. While I REALLY have fun with it, it takes a LOT of time to do it all. It I DO continue doing Retrospectives, Beast Wars WILL be on the list of ones I'd want to do... but it wouldn't be the next one. That will be another series of mine that I love a bit more.

Working on it right now! It would be further along if it wasn't for the fact that I I've been doing overtime at my job. With luck, though, I should have the script finished soon and then I'll start recording it!

Well, the pace I did it in was meant to homage the original opening of the show. If you watch the original opening themes to ReBoot you'll see what I mean.
