hey SniderTron 3000 from my fun with the 8.8 before you have rear end powder-coated run a couple of beads around where the cast 3rd-member and axel tubes are pressed together and run a couple gussets across the top 3rd member to the axel tubes... yes they are pretty strong axels but they can be alot better...thats why my c1500 build im running with a ford 9in
You can buy and use.. small bearing 9" ford ends and press bearings on axles and have c clip eliminated rear end. Plus you can cut a half inch off each axle.. plenty of sline to do it. Then you can make it 1" narrower. Ive done it a couple of times.
Not sure if it still applies, but when I re-did the 8.8 in my 87 LSC with 4.10s and 31 spline Mosers, the Explorer "S" spring was the one you wanted in there for the trac-lok. Looking forward to see how this comes out as always!
@@SniderTron3000 lol thats right, gearz. "Copperhead" was my favorite truck back in the day. Because of it, I bought a 67, 70 and two 72s lol. Over the years of course. They are now really hard to find around here. Wish i kept at least one of them.
Lol I was just listening a few weeks ago to Stacy on the C10Talk Podcast and he was talking about Copperhead and his whole history and how he got started on making shows. It was really interesting
Looking forward to seeing the RX-7 doing sick boosted burnouts! Seeing all that rust makes me miss Michigan...NOPE! I mean how do you get rust on something that lived in gear oil for years!
Did you make a video on re-welding all the brackets and installing your 8.8 into your RX7 we re building a fb with a 434 ci small block stroked with forged lower end-and a five speed and a 8.8 rear end we just cut all brackets off old axle and are getting ready to do the swap , any advice would be appreciated
I can't remember if I covered it in a video or not. But basically just keep in mind that the stock rx7 axle is like 2.5 or something in diameter and the 8.8 is 3" I believe. And to make sure the brackets are square with each other. Their orientation on the axle isn't insanely critical in relation to the diff/pinion angle because you can adjust that with the control arms
hope that 8.8 tasted good.lol if I did that without a mask I`d be tasting that for 2 days and have a major headache, think about putting 9 inch ends on it
Can you give some overall lengths when you are finished I wanna see if I need different wheel backspacing for my s10? Thank you keep up the good work bro.
I've watched alot of these videos on shortening an 8.8 axle housing and I'm confused on one thing. If you only shorten one side aren't you in effect moving the location of the 3rd member in the direction of the side you shortened?
The explorer 8.8's are offset to begin with. So, when you cut down the one side you make them both equal length. Thats why you end up needing 2 passenger side axles
Did that axle come from the Division Avenue LKQ? If so we're close, and I have a 1 1/4 shaft and aluminum pucks to keep a 8.8 straight and true when you weld it back together.....
@@SniderTron3000 Ya, wayland. Been watching for awhile but didn't know you were in michigan till I saw you there. Im 15 min from lkq. My tool has has aluminum pucks that go in place of the carrier and wheel bearings and the shaft goes thru everything to keep it perfect. I'm sure you got it handled but your welcome to borrow it if you want...

You should look into the c clip eliminator for the axles
I shpuld, but at the same time the rotors and calipers will keep it in place haha

Cool stuff man 👍

Just measured after shortening it, axle face to axle face is 56 1/4". So roughly 56 3/4" with the rotors
Don't you need to induction heat the housing before welding the tubes? Im curious to see how you do it!
I'm planning on preheating it with the little hand torch.
