Joel actually cares a hell of a lot about her during this scene, that's the entire point. They've grown to care about each other but Joel can't admit it to himself because he doesn't want to be hurt again. He lost one daughter, he doesn't wanna lose another so he tries to push her away the whole game up to this point not knowing that they're only growing stronger. He is extremely vulnerable and caring during this scene and he doesn't like it because he knows it only leads to pain.
He's not even saying that stuff to Ellie, he's saying it to himself. It's such a flawlessly written scene and game, their characters both dramatically change here and it's just so good.

People are calling Joel a jerk for his reaction to Ellie's words, but like...can't y'all see he's trying to protect himself? You have to look at it from the perspective of a man who's daughter straight up died in his arms. He feels guilt because he wasn't able to save her. He failed to keep her safe. The severity of his reaction to what Ellie's telling him is proof enough of how he's really come to love this girl as his own. So when he says the whole "I'm sure as hell not your dad" thing, what he's really saying subconsciously is that he'd rather have Ellie hate his guts than have than be responsible for anything bad that happens to her for lack of being able to protect her. I personally read a lot more into the whole "Do you have any idea of what your life means?" comment he made and when he said he trusted Tommy more than he trusted himself. He just doesn't wanna hurt anymore, but he obviously realizes he can't live with her hating him, which is why he changes his mind.
The character development in this game is unmatched to anything I've ever seen, especially in a video game. All the damn awards, seriously.

This really is important to not just this game but the next game they said this one was based on love and the next is based on hate we see how Ellie has changed through time and Joel tries to protect her from many things including the truth at the end so despite anything he tries he can’t prevent her from experiencing the world and how awful it is he knows that caring for her is dangerous because attachment leads to heartbreak and in the teaser for part 2 it sounds like he wants to stop her when he walks in with a gun in hand and he asks, “what are you doing kid” her response is full of hate and hurt something Joel didn’t want her to go through this next game might show the reaction Ellie has if she finds out what Joel told her at the end is a lie and this deep hate for causing the lives of many and in my theory her love interest could’ve been prevented if he let her die, I don’t think she’ll hate him to the point of wanting to hurt him, that’d be out of character but being 19 she’s gonna have issues realizing he did it for her and that’s where the hate will stem from I’m excited to see this in the future and how their relationship will play out in the next game

sculptureofsound2 I agree with everything except the last part. He changes his mind because he realizes he is being selfish and a coward, he only cares about his feelings, not only does he leave her, but also endangering his brother's life too, which isn't fair to Tommy and his new life. It's like he wanted to get rid of a burden and gave it to Tommy. But he already loves her too much, he cares about how she feels, as she expressed herself in the house, her biggest fear was to be alone, all the ones she cared about are gone. And the only right thing to do is to go with her through the end, he will never leave her again.

Awesome comment, yo! That's what makes this game beautiful. The character development is just outstanding, they manage to make "You're not my daughter" to "Baby girl" through joy and tears, and they also even manage to make us justify what Joel did to save Ellie at the cost of humanity. What a remarkable journey, again from Naughty Dog, and I hope TLOU 2 will be as good, even better than the first one😀

kirikakirikakirika nah it was improv... she said in an interview.. according to the guy who plays Joel, it caught him off guard and “took the scene to a whole nother level..” that’s what he said, could I also say the “fucking” was improv too? Actually, most of the mainly dialogue parts where the physical interactions are not important to the story, (for instance Ellie hitting that fat guy with the pole was important to the story, so it wasn’t improv..) but Joel putting his hands around Ellie’s face when he stops her from vaporising the creepy guys face with a machete, little touches like that, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were improvised...

Ellie is sad because, being a CHILD still, she thinks Joel just wanna get rid of her; she thinks Joel sees her as an annoyance, a job that needs to be done, while she is starting to see him (if subconsciously) as a parent figure. What she's missing is that it's quite the opposite, Joel is starting to get attached to her, and maybe... maybe, he's starting to realise how hard would it be to let her go to the fireflies (he later does verbalize this in the rooftop, while watching the giraffes: "do you really wanna do this?") and the consequences of that.
So, in a way, this chapter was Joel making a decision on wether stay with her and facing the pain of letting go again later, or leave her with Tommy and going back to being a numb human beign

Pretty much. By this point, Joel loves Ellie and he knows it. People's reactions to Joel piss me off so badly. Just because he's an older, big "tough" guy doesn't mean he can't be a complex character and have deeply rooted reasons behind his actions and the things he says. Joel is an extremely emotionally damaged person, as is Ellie. They both do arguably bad things in this scene; Ellie shouldn't have been so forward and sudden with bringing up Sarah, she caught Joel off guard and he obviously didn't know how to respond because even talking about Sarah hurts him. And Joel maybe shouldn't have been quite so harsh with her.
But to say that he hasn't grown to like her at all, or that he is a dickhead, is completely shallow. And it's a perfect example of people not connecting with a character, and not understanding why they act the way they do. People are more open to Ellie's character and connect with her because she's a young and expressive girl, and forget that Joel has just as much complexity as a character as she does.
In my opinion, this scene is one of the most important and heartbreaking moments for his character (although he has far too many heartbreaking moment in the game), and it's truly a shame that so many people just can't seem to understand Joel and understand who he is.

Joel saying "You're not my daughter, and I'm sure as hell not your dad" may seem, on the surface, cruel. But really it's more telling than anything else. Ellie never said anything about their relationship-- it's Joel that's acknowledging that this dynamic exists between them, and it's him trying to convince himself that what he's saying is true-- that he doesn't see her as his daughter. But if he really didn't see her that way then he never would have thought of saying it in the first place. And that's powerful.

So yes, of course he loves her, to the point he thinks of her as his daughter, but that fear of losing her is too much to where he'd much rather hurt her terribly then go through what he did 20 years ago.

    Just my thoughts regarding this:
Joel recognized that Ellie opened herself up to him, but really didn't trust himself to see it through, or was starting to lose his edge. You can see when he says "You're not my daughter" that he kind of had to force himself to say it, swallowing his emotions down, but his voice cracks for a split second when he says "There's two coming in." He didn't want to say it, but he wants Ellie to be in more trusting hands than his own and so he wanted to "hurt" her so she would want to leave on her own rather than forcing her to travel with someone else. Or he said that to hurt her for bringing Sarah back up.

This scene is extremely well acted. Joel wanted to protect "his new daughter" from the horrors, he doesnt want to have a second daughter being killed in his arms. Thats why he is so harsh and stubborn about ellie going with tommy, all he wants is to protect her. You can see on his faca that he finds it difficult to let ellie go but is the best way in his mind, he may die but not his "daughter" again.

The fact that Ashely improvised the push and intention of it makes it completely beautiful.(From Troy. I too noticed this) Basically, Ashley herself lost people in her life time, so this scene was very surreal to her. And she is sitting there pouring her heart out to him and he wasn't giving her anything. He wasn't truly listening to Ashley so Joel wasn't listening to Ellie. On this take when she pushed him, the whole scene definitely turned around.

The Walking Dead and The Last Of Us is the two best games I have played to date. It's hard to say who's the better one, but I can say that both are worth the money, and then some :)
Yes, I am open to suggestions. I prefer if you ask if I have played the game first, as I don't want all games spoiled, but if you have any good ideas, share them. I got quite a few compilations to make atm, scenes frequently asked about and such. It adds up, and I can't do it all at the same time, but I write all suggestions down, and I will make sure it's done eventually. As long as there are a sufficient amount of good reactions.

It's amazing how much emotions and vulnerability are in Joel's lines here. His tone is scared and angry, but you can hear and see that he cares about her and that terrifies him. It's also kind of scary to hear, like it gives you chills. Troy Baker did such an amazing job building this character. Then you have Ellie, admitting out loud that she would be scared without Joel. I mean up to this point she's put on this tough girl attitude, the stubborn teen, but in this moment she's afraid and hurt. They both did such an amazing job and I love them for it.

In his defense Ellie bringing up his daughter, caught him off guard. She wasn't there to see Sarah dying in his arms. Joel fears that if got attached to Ellie, something bad would happen. And he'd loose her the same way, so he figures hurting her and having her hate him while she's alive. Is better than her hating him while she's dead.

Nkume ooof oh god LOU2 became a chore, it was trash. The only reason I finished it was so people who are defending the game didn’t use that as a way to discount my opinion. I don’t understand that logic though, if something is so terrible you don’t even want to finish it I believe that speaks for itself. This is the first time in my life an entire fan base can speak up and say something is terrible and the creator and development team straight up say “It’s a masterpiece you don’t know what you’re talking about”. That’s literally what Neil and the Team are doing. Access reviewers are useless bias sources. They literally have to give positive reviews. If they didn’t both Sony and naughty dog would ban them from both free and early release review copies.
