2008 Porsche 987 Cayman S - (One Take)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 лют 2016
- The last-generation Porsche Cayman S is quietly becoming a "must buy" on the used sports car list. With a rev-happy, vocal engine, one of the world's most balanced chassis, and not one but two trunks, these thing are amazing bang for your buck.

Bill owns 4 porches.
Bill is a nice guy
Be like Bill :D
+Nour Nachabe That's a lot of deck space!
I like bill better than the jackass reviewer
@@Jwdude123 I mean, matt isn't for everybody but damn homie. Did he bump into you in line at the cafeteria in school today? Good lord lol dude's pretty widely respected by car folks, don't rain on a parade that really needs to happen more often if you feel me
Nour Nachabe I like Bill
Bill doesn't buy new cars. Bill is a smart man.
archinuk417, depreciation in the first year is 20%, buy one year old cars!
Bill doesn't realize that the 993 is a car that you enjoy n drive for what it is and was in the 90's. To compare n say a early 90's car suck next to the Cayman is stupid.
It's Bill.. Hey Joe, I think you misunderstood our conversation in the beginning. I was looking to purchase a 993 because I love them, still do, and still would like to own one some day. Although the prices have been a bit crazy for several years now. Trust me, I totally and completely understand the joy behind the obsession of these cars. I also never said the 993 sucked, in fact I said I loved them in the conversation. The context of my comments is that sometimes you gotta get the wife on board before you drop $40-50k cash on a 4th Porsche that's just for fun and over 20 years old. I always loved the Cayman as well and it was a hell of a lot easier getting the wife on board for that one because she loves the way it drives! Some day when I have a bigger garage, or a new wife ;^) , I will add the 993 to it.
Bill buys used porsches.. Bill is a genius
@@qikqbn77 Bill, I'm looking into Cayman S but hearing about gen 1 issues such as bearings or IMS. Also I'm not so hand on with doing things myself, would you recommend gen 2 instead or gen1 is completely fine?
Bill is a nice guy
be like bill
+iliovecaRS lmfai
+MrTurkishBacon Yeah - Matt should look at giving this guy a job.
+Brian Vecchiarelli 4 Porsches... don't think he needs a job.
+Doughbodyboy true haha
Bill seems like a really cool guy, i love that he actually talks unlike many other people on this show who are pretty shy! :)
+Ausgefahren - Aus Liebe zum Auto. and half of the commenters hate when people talk instead of sit quiet
When people talk UA-cam says they talk too much. When they're quiet UA-cam says they don't talk enough.
+Michael Cohen That's the internet for ya... unfortunately.
I found that matt tends to cut people off mid sentence which discourages them
you two can ramble on for hours, what a nice guy.
I would love if Matt made a podcast!
+Trygve Germo look up the smoking tire podcast...
+Trygve Germo Your in luck he does and it's one of my favourites
This is the video that really sold me on the Cayman S. I'm not sure they can really do justice to just how much fun this car is to drive. So glad I bought one!
Bill said it... balanced. The defining word for a Cayman. I've never driven a car that is so well matched across engine, chassis, gearbox, steering and brakes. Everything just works in harmony.
Without that Widowmaker-911, rear engine limitation lol
One of the best one-takes so far! Love the 987 generation!
Bill's a cool guy... I like Bill... Be more like Bill folks.... Nice Porsche Bill
Picked up a 987 Cayman last October. Love the car to death! Insane amount of fit, finish, and performance for the price.
I’ve got one. It’s the perfect combination of power, weight and feel. And Bill’s comment about cornering so fast that you feel like you are about to go off the cliff but don’t? Oh, I can relate! Wonderful car.
Heyy Matt, how about a behind the scenes video of theese one takes? How you organize such a day, get up into the mountains, set the cameras, place them in the cars, do the drives, talk to the fans, extracting Videos and so on. Bet that would be intresting to us.Greetings from a german fan since day one.
+plucksch +1
yeah !!!! please do that !!
Agreed
+plucksch I think there might be one out there...BUT an updated version would be great!
+plucksch haha probably not the best idea if he doesn't wanna get harassed by the local bizzies/popo/5-0/cops etc
I absolutely love my 07 Cayman!
And I hate you 😆 want one lol
Finally a stock 987 Cayman S - I've been waiting for this review! Thank you very much, Matt & Bill!
Hands down the best sports car for the money. 85k miles on mine. Traded in a low mileage 09 BMW 335i coupe to a 07 cayman s manual in 2013. One of the best decision I have made. Kept it stock. 4 years into the ownership for daily put 30k+ miles on so far. Drifted in snow at -negative celsius cold winters to couple track days in hot summers. Reliability? Only thing went wrong is O2 sensor once and coolant pump died due to its age or stress after track days. Put on a new clutch and flywheel at 75k. THATS IT. Also, the value wont depreciate because its a Porsche. Test drove lot of new cars (M4, Macan S, new 718, GT3, GT3RS, R8 V10 ext,,). But nothing feels like hydraulic steering Porsches in a way it communicates to the driver especially when surface loses its traction or goes into irregular pavement. GT3RS electric steering feel is best among many yet still doesnt feel close to 997 or 987 varient. And NA flat six sound.. A well maintained manual Porsche sports car will always hold its value. I am going to keep it to this car and hand over it to my future son for his 18th birthday.
Hard Questions I have an 08 335i MT and I’m looking at the Cayman. How’s the grunt of the Porsche comp to the Cayman?
I'm pretty sure the value of your cayman went UP since you posted that...
Great post man respect
Always been a fan of the Cayman its just such a sweet drivers package and quite understated looks. Bill is a real car guy that can express himself, it's nice to have someone that loves talking about their car and about the little things .... Really nice car Bill and my advice keep it stock you'll love it that way. Great Vid Matt :)
Bill should make his own channel and tell us his stories and do some driving and vlogging videos. I love his personality.
He has one ;)
archinuk417 Ah i must look for it.
DJ MotoVlogs He posted a comment or two. You just have to find it.
I love this car so so so much
This is the best guy yet. So enthusiastic, so knowledgable so friendly
It reminds me of early 718/550 Porsches, Ferrari/Dino 246GTS (so beautiful). I chose my Guards Red 2011 987.2 Cayman S SportChrono+ three years ago now and it is staying. Uncanny handling in the twisties, gorgeous, fast and surprisingly good on fuel. So engaging, light and nimble. I love this body style, love the sound and easy DIY maintenance. Mine has PDK and the GT3 paddle shifter steering wheel which gets rid of that silly button shifter steering wheel.
Here’s my take on PDK: On occasion I drive it to work and it is an easy commuter car, quiet, good visibility, auto shifting where manual is zero fun in stop/go traffic. More typically it lives for early morning runs on the narrow twisty roads nearby in Sport mode which holds revs, shifts aggressively and reads your mind - it’s that good. Full Sport+ mode too if you want to do all the shifting yourself.
I did detail and paint intake plenum, throttle body and intake runner badges and put a clear engine cover on it which gives it a McLaren-esque look through the rear glass - seriously it's spectacular! It's my special lady and sits beside a Red Triumph Thruxton - Hmmm what to take today :)
Highly recommended.
each time come from work to have launch i watch the one take keep them coming !
Last November I bought same year same model Cayman S. This car has such great connection to the road and steering feel. Also, the engine sound is entirely different with windows up or down. For this reason, some say Boxter S gives a little more intoxicating sound with its roof down. Although "only" about 290 hp, it feels faster than that given how light it is. I think this car is more of a driver's car even than something that is really good such as E46 M3 or even E92 M3.
Non "S" version are also great and even though they lack low end torque, every trip to the redline takes fraction longer, gives you more time to enjoy the sound and they sound just as good.
FINALLY! I've been waiting ages for this!
Wow that road is so good! Lots of curves, mountains, trees and little hobby farms with lots of cars parked near the road to admire. We need more of that road!
don't know why but each day I like these one takes more and more, more than the normal car reviews. It's like I get to know Matt personally. Keep up the great work and if you ever come to Portugal I have some nice toys for you to try if you want!
Nice to see Bill on the show again! Really enjoyed his first appearance and this one was just as good as his last.
Matt, I love ya, and all your episodes kick ass, but damn.....they are so much better when we get lucky and have a talkative/knowledgeable owner with you. It makes an A+ video, an A++.
Good job picking this gentleman!
Keep em coming!
PS. $30k? I'm totally out of touch with High end car prices. I thought for sure he was going to say 50-60k used...
+Darren G. $50-60k will buy you a 2-year old Cayman S. This car is 7 years old at this point, so the prices are much lower.
+Darren G. Hey, it's Bill... If you are ever in the market for a used Porsche.. the sweet spot is about 5 years old. That's about when they are getting close to the 40% discount range for low mileage cars and 50% discount range for higher mileage cars. Do your homework and meet the right owner who loved and took care of the car and she will feel and look like new!!
+TheSmokingTire Hey Matt. Can you test drive a 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo S? It's a unicorn car but it's the most enjoyable Porsche I've ever driven.
Thanks, Bill!! Please share ALL your stories. We love listening to you. Can't wait for the next video. Matt, do a ten take with Bill. Seriously, 11 minutes isn't enough.
PS is there a better car for $35k?
+Michael Cohen e92 m3
+Harrison Conyers yep. Cool car. Different animal though.
Michael Cohen lotus exige maybe, that's in the same class of lightweight momentum cars.
+Michael Cohen BMW Z4 M, for $20-$30k
+Michael Cohen Corvett
I aspire to be where Bill's at in life someday. Great guy
Just seen this video and I really like the chemistry between the two guys and I know that Bill is a 'regular' guy, but he is cool and I like what he has to say, this is a great video.
Excellent audio, thanks for improving it!
You are so right about the character of the engine!
shout out to the yellow wrx wagon at 9:00 !!!!! awesome vid mat, i love when the guest are true car people
Bill, you rock.
Wow, Bill's super chill!
"Happy Wife - Happy Life!" Lol.
😂😂😂
@sasquatch Did someone get hurt by a girl :D
Wheew! I love my 06 Cayman s cool to see you doing a video on one!
I own a Cayman S 2007 and fully agree with all comments from this video ! Awsome car !
mariocaron1 how has reliability been with this car friend?
Im going to buy a 2006 one
God damn Bill's such a bad ass car guy! Matt if you ever need a fill in host Bill would be the guy for sure. I'm with you on the most important thing to get right on a car is the relationship between pedal feel, steering and shifter throw and weight, along with seating position, those points are what can make or break the enjoyment factor for a car.
Matt;s voice at 0:04 hahaha. PrograAHHHHM. Hate when it happends :) Love the cayman! Lovely car.
I've been waiting for one of these.
Great video, great car!
Hey Bill.
Now you’re make me think about getting a Cayman.!!
Thank you both of you
I think the Cayman is the best balanced Porsche, because of its mid engine layout. Great video Matt!
One of the last true Sports cars
nonsense
Such a great ride! I want one.
Nice collection Bill! Smart man for buying gently used.
excited for the 911! also, hadn't been a fan of the cayman but this video changed my mind a little. Bill thanks for the story on how you got it! hope it's the same for the 911 :)
Addicted to POWER .. a Cayman .. is a fast car 🚗 ☺️ and so much fun to drive.
Cool car, cool convo
Was really hoping to see this, I have the same year and model. Awesome to hear him talk about it! The car is solid, and it's the best I've driven. Keep the reviews coming Matt, they are a pleasure to watch.
great car!!! future classic
I'm seriously thinking about getting a used Cayman. Thanks for the video.
Did you get one?
Next batch of cars looks exciting!
Awesome video! I'm at the point where I'm DEFINITELY purchasing my first Porsche in the very near future (less than a few months hopefully), and the Cayman S is at the top of my list. This video has helped to support that decision!
Awesome, you will not be disappointed! One of the best handling cars in the world! Keep us posted!
qikqbn77 Will do! :) I'm seriously having dreams about the car now. Very excited for the day I'm sitting in it, it's mine, and I'm driving it home.
Every time I hear Matt say “not crazy fast, but fast enough”, I think for any normal human it’s crazy fast.
I was about getting that one and a 997 . I bought a 997 4S and i really like it!!
Ive been waiting
Dam it looked like the PORSCHE was going 220 MPH from the rear shot as passing! Excellent rear shot!
This would be a dream car for where I live, with tight mountain roads and elevation changes, and just enough straights to enjoy the engine (I've heard it has rather long gears).
This video helped I’m prolly going to by a used cayman s manual.
987 will be a classic. Makes you part of the drive.
I want one so bad for a fun weekend car. They're going for low 20s with low mileage here. I checked fcpeuro for maintenance cost, and it seems fairly cheap. A LOT of car for that much money.
My realistic dream car.
I thought this was the dude with the 4sp 930.
Love that 4sp.
This road reminds me of some of those around Napa, but I guess a lot of California probably looks the same. It's crazy how quickly the terrain can change when you drive up out of the valley and over the mountain ridge towards the ocean side.
I'm looking at a 2008 Cayman S for around $24,500... It has 90K but is a one owner, very well maintain car with no Carfax issues. I love the look and the 6 is a must. No 4 banger like the new versions.
Matt on the new steering wheel: “It has a nice thickness to it.” Michael Scott: “That’s what she said.”
enjoyed video, and waiting for bill's 911
Bill likes Porsche.
I like Bill.
Cant wait to see mustang test
I want one now!
I had 2011 Cayman R. Best car ever owned. Sold it after two years for same I bought it for. Now looking to get 2013 Mustang GT to get something cool and different(Mustang is more cool in Finland than M3 :) ).
I would look for models 2009 and up for DFI for better reliability and MPG and power too.
Matt how did you fit in the cayman im 6'5 and am curious ?
Swell guy right there.
Great review!
Bill is a great guest, he knows how to have an engaging, two way conversation
10:37 that BMW driver knows what's up though.
I may be getting this with the PDK as my first car!!!
(I have already been driving a Mercedes E63 and a BMW Z4 for 3 years as training cars)
Matt, is this the Cayman video you mentioned that was coming? or is there another one with the 981 Cayman?
Sweet!
I want one!
Bill is a car guy. A real smart car guy buys four Porsches, Caymans are the best.
Have a listen to the carnewal exhaust on these caymans, it sounds amazing.
nice car. nice owner.
just bought the 2007 base version. and it IS easy to drive right off the bat. very confidence inspiring. for one thing it doesn't take four to five thousand miles on it before you stop making stupid shifting errors. the clutch, brakes, steering and shifting all match as far as effort goes. it's not like those circus guys juggling a football, ping pong ball and a bowling ball just to show show off their dexterity. the controls are all of a piece.
Bill really knows his shit! What bargain of a car!
Bill knows what's up lol also anyone else excited to see the evo lol
it would be a pleasure to see the rest of Bills cars
I tried to find the bobcat, but the resolution wasn't good enough :(
Yup! We like Bill.
Matt.. random question. have you ever been stuck in the middle of a shoot and your passenger dutch ovens the cab??
+kma198199 haha not that I can recall.
+kma198199 I was tempted just to see Matt's reaction ;^) I only do that when my wife is in the car! haha just kidding!
shit matt I was just telling a friend about you and I was mentioning ur just an awesome UA-camr thx for listening to us man. No need for a reply. just thx.
actually i was just thinking ...this is prolly the social media gentleman replying. so if you dont mind tell matt I said thanks lol
+Lundy wildez is, was, and always will be Matt. You're welcome!
Wow lol it is you. I can tell from your choice of words lol thx buddy
Ah, I love the idea of buying a Cayman S - seem like a car you can enjoy on the weekends and take to autoX in the same breath w/o even batting an eye.
They def. seem hard to work on given that engine location but like all German cars I'm guessing once you've been doing it for awhile it doesn't bother you as much.
You can supercharge a BRZ though for a bit less or get a very low mileage 370Z so there's very tough competition all around. Hard to pick just ONE...
FARRAH put it PERFECTLY, I got to drive a GT3 RS once in California, and *"Porsches feel like Curling."*
(They don't necessarily punch you in the back, they just glide forward smoothly but constantly. I actually expected them to accelerate 4x harder, but in a race you definitely get ahead because of the smooth high speed handling, not torque.)
New thought A guy with 4 Porsches could be likable.
I have a 2007 version of this car. It is the best!!!!
I think the conversation camera should be pointed at the tacho....what do you think..?
Matt you should do a cayenne one take, I test drove one with a standard transmission and it was very fun!
Ain't this the homey with the 4 speed 911 Turbo?
That 4 speed is dope.
bill any advice on what questions to ask during interviews with the previous/current owner?
Hi, it's Bill, The usual questions are a bit obvious. Like maintenance records and carfax report, but I like to talk to the owner a bit to get a feel for his lifestyle, what he does for a living, how he views cars in general, is he an enthusiast or more of a poser, does he wrench on his cars, or more hands off and has all work done at one place. Does he race or autocross, what kind of oil does he use and how often does he change the oil, anything or any reason for selling and what he liked or disliked about the car. You really just want to get a good picture of what this owner's life was like with the car and if he really respected and took good care of it or just thrashed on it. Also, when I mention lifestyle or even age of the owner, you just want to get a feel for how he drove the car. I recently bought another porsche from an older gentleman. I new right away from taking a quick test drive with him driving for a bit and then switching drivers, that he was not a fast driver in any way. His shifting was very methodical and he was just more of a cruiser than a show off. Hope that all gives you ideas, but I would just say, stay away from owners who seem to thrash their cars and look for those who seem to be more respectful and take care of the car. best of luck!!
