Apparently "When do we go to the Upside-Down?" is the new "Why isn't this like Matt Mercer's campaign?"
I got into DnD because an ex boyfriend of mine would play it with his friends and wouldn’t let me play. So later when I was dating someone new (my now husband) he said he was going to join a group having never played before and wanted me to play with him. The rest is history. We both love Stranger things too.
How I deal with Stranger Things's fans who want me to introduce them to D&D : - Send them the Player's Handbook as a PDF and tell them to just read the introduction. - Tell them to pick the class and the race they want to play. They don't need to read anything more beside the few paragraphs of description at the beggining of what they are instersted in. - Reassure them that they don't need to fully grasp the rules or read the 300 pages, just the descriptions. If they are not satisfied with the races in the PHB and want to play a human cat, I can give them more options. - Tell them that once they'll choose their race and class, we will have a one to two hour personnal session to create their character sheet. I will then explain the basics of the rules, and help them imagine a backstory and a personality for their character. - Tell them that once all of that is done, we will be set. We will just have to find a four to six hour periode where everyone is available to play the game. - ???????? - Never ear from them ever again. And this is how you get rid of Stranger Things fans. You're welcome. To be clear, I'm not a gatekeeper. I love to introduce new players to TTRPGs, and I'm sure there are a lot of Stranger Things's fans that became great D&D players. Let's just say the five I met did not.
So Simple. However, simplicity doesn't do it for me. If you did that with me, expect me having read the entire PHB cover to cover, and have already created 20 characters during each read through, to ensure I understood correctly. Any confusion would be cleared up when I talk to DM proper, and make my character proper. I have about 40 characters for Pathfinder alone, that would likely never see the light of day in a campaign because of my need to create as I read, and they having 0 input from any DM.
Funny enough, we have a campaign on Saturday, and we've got a new player as of last weekend. He plays a female dwarven cleric. His cousin is our dwarven barbarian and they're playing twin brother and sister characters. Anyways, me and the DM were going over manuals we both own (book and online) and when I said " the Vecna dossier" he piped up with "Oh, Vecna from Stranger Things?". I told him "No, Vecna from DnD that Stranger Things is based upon". He didn't even realize, after watching the series, that it was based upon a DnD game. I haven't even watched it and I knew that.
I didn't watch the last season and i could have missed something, but i wouldn't say that Stranger Things Is based upon D&D: it's a serie with supernatural stuff and the younger characthers just use some concepts from the game to explain that stuff
@@graziano2308 Aren't all the monsters from DnD, though? Like I said, I didn't watch the series but that's pretty much the feel I got from everything I've seen about it.
@@johnpatrick1647 Sorry i didn't pay attention to the last phrase of your comment. I'll use an example: 4 kids of the main cast play d&d, when they meet a girl with psychic powers they say that she's a wizard; but she doesn't have a spell book, it's more of a sci-fi type of power (later in the serie we learn that the CIA did some experiment on her mother while she was pregnant), connection like that are frequent when the kids are on screen (especially when they talk about a monster), but that doesn't happen with the adult characthers. I'd say that D&D is not that important in the serie's plot, but it's just my opinion
@@johnpatrick1647 i liked it, it makes you want to binge it (it uses a lot of cliffhangers). I think that the 3rd season is a bit different, the monster feel less mysterious; but it's been a while and i don't remember the details (i may confuse the 2nd and 3rd season).

I've been wanting to play for 17 years but something always got in the way. I gave up a few years ago but Stranger Things rekindled that interest and stuff happened and well. I had my first session last weekend and I couldn't be happier. Things are slow atm bc everyone has busy schedules but boy I can't wait for the next session! ST introduced a lot of people into it and while that comes with some problems I'm glad it happened. There's a lot more people I can potentially play with than there were 17 years ago. It's awesome!

Thank god I got into DnD because I have several friends who play DnD, and not through Stranger Things or Critical Role. That way, I got to play my first game without any expectations... Though I really do appreciate what series like Stranger Things, Critical Role or Dimension 20 are doing and how they're making DnD more popular. Everyone getting into a hobby needs some kind of access to that hobby, and if pop culture facilitates that, all the better.

I don't know if i had heard of it before i watched the show and tbh i didn't even thing much of it when it was mentioned. honestly it seemed kinda boring. but the important thing was, it introduced me to the concept. then i started seeing posts about collecting dnd dice, random dnd posts coming up on my pinterest, etc and thought "hey wait i wanna do this so bad, fantasy is my main special interest". it had been a while, but finally i was able to join d&d club at my school . ive only been in this a few months, but i am a fucking joy to have in your party

Too bad the only thing that never seems to translate over is the cleric's resurrection spells.
Everyone thought Will, Eleven & Hopper died but they came back.
Sorry, Bill.
Right? RIP Eddie.
Eleven literally used resurrection on max in the end of season 4. Guess she multiclassed into cleric.

I got into DnD because an ex boyfriend of mine would play it with his friends and wouldn’t let me play. So later when I was dating someone new (my now husband) he said he was going to join a group having never played before and wanted me to play with him. The rest is history. We both love Stranger things too.
That's cute, would watch a movie based on this story
(Also i am happy for you)
@@indie_gamer7 bruh who the hell would watch a movie about that

Hey we have a new guy at the table let's be kind as we introduce him.
*Introduces nightwalker as beginner fight*
chad
The nigthwalker is a balanced fight for a lvl 1 party
How I deal with Stranger Things's fans who want me to introduce them to D&D :
- Send them the Player's Handbook as a PDF and tell them to just read the introduction.
I have about 40 characters for Pathfinder alone, that would likely never see the light of day in a campaign because of my need to create as I read, and they having 0 input from any DM.
this honestly works really well, my brothers only watched the show and was interested in playing after seeing it and had an absolute blast
odd 🤔
Can I get a link to that pdf of the players handbook?
I mean 😭 that is in no way gatekeeping, it's how you are inteoduced to dnd
@@graziano2308 Cool. Cool.
Is it really any good? Worth a binge or nah?
@@johnpatrick1647 i liked it, it makes you want to binge it (it uses a lot of cliffhangers). I think that the 3rd season is a bit different, the monster feel less mysterious; but it's been a while and i don't remember the details (i may confuse the 2nd and 3rd season).
The “that is unfortunate” when the night walker showed up had me dying

One of my ex gfs legit freaked out when she learned I played Vampire The Masquerade, because she thought we actually bit each other's necks while playing.

"I think murder is a perfect excuse to end todays session!"
Do you even know how hard it is to find a time where the whole party is free? Especially if 1 of those are going to jail
"Hey dude, can you make it this week?"
"Please stop texting my son, your group _killed him,_ remember!?"
"Ah, ok. But you'd better be here next week!"
I had some prior experience with 3.5 with my Dad as the DM and siblings being my fellow players before the show, but it definitely contributed to my interest and later joining of the TTRPG club at my Uni. My favorite college experiences and friendships happened as a result of joining that club. No regrets 😌
Stranger things is the reason I teached 15 peopel in one month how to play dnd.
Most was sadly muderhobo, but a few are planning to play again, and some now love the game.
So thanks stranger things.
It's awesome!
thats so sweet to hear i hope your next session goes well
I had a friend who thought vecna and other stranger things monsters were in it. They were like “what? Vecna isnt in dnd? I thought dnd was based of stranger thingys?!”
But... Vecna IS from D&D? ST didn't invent him.
Vecna is in dnd...
“Wait! Is that Thanos from Fortnite!”Bro, this is Fortnite all over again…
But... Vecna is in D&D.
@@azzaelulbrinter1515 Not a D&D character, a Critical Role character. Those are still 2 seperate things.
Never mind I mixed something up there, I just confused Vecna and The Whispered One.
This is a pretty accurate depiction of how people respond to a nightwalker.
What about dragonborn's puberty ?
Next week, we promise!

That’s next week

Its still the same week. So next week as promised.
Never watched the show but I think I get the gist.... you should do one with an older player returning and having to play with 5e rules. It was interesting for me.

“Have some soup”
I need a guy like this in my sessions.
i actually started playing because of diary of a wimpy kid in book 7 i think they play a game called Magick and monsters i loved the concept so much i checked out all the 4th edition books at my library and i have been playing ever since😄 changed my life for the better!
Good on you for playing a good edition
Oh hey same! Buuuut I did not know about d&d, so i tried to make my own. When i was 10. I did not know a six sided die can have more sides.
It didn't end well.
Only when i turned 17 i learned about d&d 5e 🙂
I got the 4th Edition books for my birthday and after reading them I knew I'd never play the game
I got my kids into it after they watched a My Little Pony episode featuring a game modeled after D&D called Obelisks & Ogres or something like that. The episode had a character in it that is voiced by the actor that played Q on Star Trek (which is what got me to watch the episode), and the character he voices in MLP has some similarities to Q.
@@logangraham3689 you should give it another try! the 5th edition books are much more streamlined and easier to understand for new players! its also a super fun game!
I'd like to see the reaction from the stranger things people when they see a druid just being chaotic by turning into an animal and messing with a town because they were bored yes that happened in one of my campaigns the druid turned into a bluejay and started stealing everything because boredom.
I like turning into a rat or giant wolf spider when I want to terrorize. I might have to try bluejay next time.
@@volterra8974 My druid went bluejay because they would do things barely out of sight and try to throw the blame on another npc or make the town think it was a spirit just in case you want to try it fully.
I'm playing a druid/sorcerer and my druid thought she should play a prank on a random bard student by turning into a spider and scaring him. She rolled nat 20 to bite the poor dude and then rolled max damage for the attack, so double max damage and poison damage...and then the guy failed his con check. My druid left thinking it was a funny prank, but I've been kindly informed the guy is completely dead and it's not the first time her pranks have ended in innocent lives taken lmao

When you said ‘dungeon master’ my captions translated it to ‘Dutch ambassador’😂
I found out about D&D from Gravity Falls tbh
I searched it up, found out the game they were playing was the non-copyright of D&D and started looking more into it!
I've been playing for a while now and I love it :)
I don't care how they started, WELCOME BROTHERS AND SISTERS, CHOOSE YOUR HERO WHILE I WEAVE TOGETHER A DESTINY FOR YOU.
I was a Stranger Things fan before I was a DnD player, but I got started in DnD separately from my interest in Stranger Things. In fact, once S4 came out I was like "oh yeah they play DnD too" obviously they play a much earlier version than I do and of course it's going to be played the way it can translate into a narrative show, which is why it feels so different
As predictable as the ending could be, I had to hold my laughter when the dark hand started materializing, very well made
I've been playing D&D for 30 years this year. I'm glad things like Stranger Things and Critical Role are bringing in new players. Yeah they're a little wet behind the ears but so were we all at one point.
I started watching Stranger Things with my gf recently and everytime they play dnd, I have to stop myself from yelling "That's not how dnd work!"
didn't they one shot a monster resistant to fire damage with a fire spell at one point?

I love, how you show us which character is currently making an expression by putting in the effort to wear a different shirt for each player.
I'm going to be honest: Stranger Things is the reason why I joined D&D. Well I guess not the reason, but the cause.
I need this Cleric Soup Domain sub-class.

Cleric? Will!?
Cue the next video where he has someone fill in for him doing all of the acting, making us truly wonder if it was all real
That stranger things guy will become one of the most invested players any dm will love
Me being a ST fan and a DND player, this video is right up my alley
Ok but what about DnD lovers who watched ST because it was featured? My friend kept trying to convince me to watch it and that was how she won me over😂
Did you like it?
@@aesliix9975 I have to admit that I only saw the middle of season four. It looks ok but there are other things I’d rather watch
I actually joined it because of Stranger Things. It has been some years now, i enjoy it very much, and i think i actually prefer to be a Dungeon Master.
The best part of these new videos is the dicey being at the end no longer gets dizzy and is happy.
Watching this having never seen or read a thing about stranger things while high is a fucking trip yo
I think its worse when people join because of critical roll and then berate the dm because they dont do voices or have vast house rules that professional players and voice actiors do.
His name was dart from stranger things for those who don’t know dart appears in season 2 he’s a slug that grows up to a demodog then dies in the end of season 2
This was significantly more detailed than I was expecting!
Jokes aside, that is genuinely good DMing to introduce a new player
They show up in the 'hellfire club shirt' and make stranger things reference's all the time as a dungeon master I don't let them do it or they are out
this happens too much.
the groupmate whispering "read the prompt I gave you" is literally the most wholesome thing ever
I watched this in my car and when the camera started to zoom in and go black around the edges the sun went behind a cloud. It came back out when the guy finally realized the game isn't going to come to life and they all stood side by side
Yep my family tried to learn playing d&d because they watched stranger things but don’t get me wrong, I did appreciate the fact that they were interested it’s just that they didn’t really understand it when they thought they knew what they were doing, and eventually they stopped because “it took too long”
I had this. I run a club at school with 20+ ppl but after one game it dropped because people didn’t think it was like dnd, now there’s only 12 of us and 2 partys
Missed opportunity to have AD-Barian spook everyone at the end.
Having played for years I never thought about the newbies from stranger things
the irony being Duke was certainly at fault for the Night Walker coming to life, since he's the one who believed in it so much ^^
I told one of my friends once that I was gonna play dnd with some of my other friends, she responded “oh like in stranger things?? That’s so cool!”
……a little part of me died when I heard that
Just the idea of things coming to life from d&d makes me shudder. Can you imagine the amount of tarrasque that would be running around,or dragons.
DM: The Nightwalker comes closer, what do you do?
The Necromancer: Oh man I've been hoping for this! I use my Command Undead ability!
Man somehow due to stranger things logic xanathar is now in my town.
My friends and I started playing because if stranger things only to find out that we had accidentally bought 4th edition books and Barnes and Noble
What a neat coincidence I made a dnd character named Dart who was a grung poison dart frog in a previous campaign 😄😎
What sucks is I was into d&d wayyyy before I’d even heard of stranger things. Never actually found a campaign, just did some one shots here and there over the years, but I finally found a group right when season 4 came out. I love stranger things and had started watching it a little before season 4 was released and was a pretty big fan but everyone just assumes I’m in D&D because of stranger things… in not but I love the show and I love the game and I hate that all stranger things fans are immediately assumed to be extremely annoying super fans that make everything about the show
Stranger Things has set up unrealistic expectations in new players on how much time combat encounters take.
The killing the most lovable character scene killed me! R.I.P. Sam, (season 2 spoiler), (season 3 spoiler), and (season 4 spoiler)
I got into dnd 4 years ago because of one of my friends and that freind was OBSESSED with stranger things and would not shut up about it when we were playing and every time there character got remotely close to death they would cry there eyes out. Goes to show some friends are not the beast dnd friend’s
Stranger Things totally got me interested in D&D. Then started watching Oxventure and researched into D&D, played some with some colleagues and then really got into BG3.
The downside to ST is that I had at least one player who insisted that every one of the monsters in the game was, “Not the real one. Especially Demogorgon, Mindflayer and, Vecna.” I quickly had to pull him aside and give him a stern talking to because he was being extremely rude. Ever since then ST always leave a bad taste in my mouth.
You've done it. You've finally convinced me to watch the last season of Stranger Things.
Oh, so there is no horrible creature of darkness and shadows creeping out from underneath my bed?
Phew! real glad you told me that, i was getting worried for a second.
You forgot the part where he's supposed to stand up and scream and flail his arms lol
But DM. I gotta ask.
Why do dragonborn tails drop off?
Just played the latest Halloween one shot at my college as Eddie Munson, lmao.
Also, I quite love how Stranger Things doesn’t even recognize the fact that the D20 system wasn’t common place until 2000.
Edit: I know D20s existed back then but they were not easy to come by.
damn, not even adbarian intervened at the end

I mean...I wouldn't say I _joined_ it because of Stranger Things. Definitely took it back up after a decade long drought, though (in addition to several other factors, such as podcasts doing it and old friends talking about it)
So he knowingly joined a game that he thought would summon real monsters. That's what's really worrying.
