I remember seeing the first trailer to Saw when I was in HS and it got me really excited to see it. The whole look and feel of it felt so refreshing at the time. There was also no hype around it or major expectations for it so going into it you just wanted to see a good horror movie. After I watched it I remember thinking wow they actually pulled off it's premise of a mostly one location setting and it wasn't boring. Not to mention the ending wasn't something that you were expecting nor had it been spoiled by the internet so it was a nice little surprise. At the time it was one of those movies you had to show your friends especially if they hadn't seen it or knew nothing about it. Hopefully we continue to get horror movies that have that same sort of impact on pop culture in the future.🤞
Should have mentioned how Whannell has began to carve out an interesting directing career himself over the last few years. Upgrade was amazing and with his fantastic take on The Invisible Man, he’s really starting to make a name for himself in that lane. I really look forward to what he does next.
I have never been a fan of Horror movies but absolutely love the whole “Saw” franchise… the latest including “Jigsaw”. I love the intricate details that are used to put together the killing machines. 😎
i went to the theater with a group of friends without any knowledge about the film... man, we were shocked!!! IT WAS AN AMAZING FEELING! we were all caught off guard.
As much as I love horror movies, SAW was an acquired taste. For a long time after its release, I refused to even watch it because of the stigma it had of "torture porn." I unfortunately judged a lot of movies this way, listening to critics and not watching the film for myself. When I finally gave SAW a chance, I was really impressed with the effects and filmmaking. The story over the series was pretty ambitious to connect all the movies plots, unfortunately some of the sequels were not enjoyable. At least I learned a valuable lesson that movie critics know nothing about what's a good or bad movie, and that a movie must be watched to be appreciated.
It was the same for me. It took 6 years for me to finally get into it. It was one of those Saw marathons on AMC or BBCA or some such channel. It was actually Saw 4, the one with Jigsaw's backstory, that really hooked me.
@@nsasupporter7557 I have heard of and seen reviews of it, but I haven't mustered up the motivation to see it yet. Same with Human Centipede and Martyrs (especially the original French version). The first Time i heard about the movie was when i saw the original Trailer. After watching it, i thought of it as a Thriller, not as a Horrorflick. The term torture porn, as far as i´m concerned, wasn´t invented until Hostel arrived on the scene. I still love the movie and have fond memory of it. Saw the 2nd, which i absolutly hated, it looked at the time like a cheap horror sequel, a group of people getting offed one by one, the 3rd which i liked more for bringing in the thriller aspect again and the fourth but at that point it felt like watching a sitcome style movie series. But i still go back and watch the first one from time to time, its a hands down, great experience.
I put the Jigsaw reveal/surprise at the end among the absolute BEST twists in ANY genre. When he got up off that floor, mannnnnnn.....I'm old school, it takes a LOT to surprise me, but even I didn't see that shit comin.
I found out about Saw through my favorite band Fear Factory on there website they talked about how they shot a video for there next single "Bite the hand that Bleeds" of there record Archetype. I got really excited when I saw the trailer I got really excited because I saw it was a horror film with Danny Glover so I was instantly sold.
Hysterical that Saw got berated by some critics for being so gory, but, in reality, there's quite a bit of blood, but very little actual gore in the film. It's just done so well that your mind makes the gore up for you. Would have loved to see the series keep up with that trend.
Wow, I cannot believe how old Shawnee Smith really is. She was 35 in the first Saw movie, and yet she looks maybe 20-25. I just Saw X last night, and damn, she doesn't look like she's aged at all since Saw III (nearly 20 years ago). She looks incredible for her age.
Still think Saw X was better because of how more rich in drama and tension there was and honestly think the Saw franchise works better focusing on Jigsaw/John Kramer then the survivors.
I remember first watching this with my homie at the age of 10 we stayed up late in his living room and I was so freaked out, but it was such a good time! RiP Hittman ❤️
I like and enjoy the saw franchise for the most part. I like the first 2 saw movie's the most. I thought 3 and 4 were pretty good sequel's. I think 5, 6 and 7 were decent but I didn't care for jigsaw as much. I thought jigsaw had it's moment's though and spiral was pretty decent as well. I also think james wan and leigh are great together and make some pretty good movie's.
Honestly, if I was someone who waited every year for these releases, just to get slightly lower quality each time. I might’ve disliked and passed off the franchise as utterly bad. Watching the films on one sick day sitting, in complete order from SAW to SAW: Final Chapter. I was completely entertain and loving each entry, but yes I do recognize some of the flaws and problems. Overall, it’s impressive with what the franchise managed and it’s one of the few franchises to have recognizable kills and sequences to make you cringe in disgust. Saw is amazing and saw 2 are by far a great companion piece, but don’t ignore the rest of the entries as they all provide something unique.
Through it's initial commercial run, I was never intrigued by the film. Nor any of it's sequels. It wasn't until 2020 (before the pandemic started) that I decided to give them a chance. I was spoiled of all the turns and plot twists of the entire franchise (because remember, I didn't give a single F about it), and yet I was drawn to them. I decided to give them a chance because the trailer for SPIRAL was released and I liked it, my first thought was: Uh, this looks and feels more like SE7EN than SAW... (which is probably the thougt of many). But then THE INVISIBLE MAN released and I loved it. When I decided to look who was the writer/director of the film, I was surprised that it was written by the same guy who wrote the first 3 films in the SAW franchise. I didn't do the connection earlier because I really didn't care about the franchise nor their creators, and when both THE CONJURING and INSIDIOUS were released with the tagline "from the creators of SAW", I just couldn't care less about them (later I saw UPGRADE, which wasn't as impressive as many people made me blieve it was, the concept is great, don't get me wrong, but the execution and final product was meh). So the pandemic came, and as everybody locked in their houses, I decided to watch the movies that I've never seen but heard a lot of them, among them was the SAW franchise, and oh boy! What a blast. I firmly believe that the first 3 are the best ones. Not only because they are penned by Leigh Whannell, but also because they have a certain coherence in them and the main villian is John Kramer. From the 4th and so on, the main villian is Dt. Mark Hoffmann carrying yet another series of games left by John Kramer, thus carrying with the legacy of that character. Later both JIGSAW and SPIRAL will carry with different followers from Kramer's teachings with rather more personal reasons to copycat him, but the legacy is there. I love the concept of having a serial killer having followers that carry his doings after death, a concept that Kevin Williamson originally wrote for SCREAM 3, but that had to be scrapped because of the Columbine Massacre. I do believe the concept of SAW and it's characters are great, and has the potencial to be a rather more serious psychological thriller-drama than a gorey fest horror franchise, which is a formula that the films decided to follow since the 4th one, I can see why some fans say that it was all downhill and convoluted from that moment.
I really like this one, though my favorite by a nose is Saw 2. But then I'm a little weird like that. Example: I like Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2,3 and 3D better than 1. But this original is much better than the others on my list. Another example: I'm more of a Night of the Living Dead 90 fan over 68. And the original Dawn & Day of the Dead are streets ahead of 68. All of that is a weird way to say I truly admire the first Saw film in the franchise. And while there is gore to be sure, I feel that it's used judiciously. It's not just gore-for-gore's-sake. It helps to tell the story.
I can't believe its been 18 years since this film came out. My brother told me about Saw after he saw the trailer. He didn't want to watch it, so my mate and me went to see.
