This movie was better than it had any right being. You don't just make a sequel to The shining and not expect some scrutiny, but I walked away impressed. In fact, I would call it one of the better horror movies in recent years.
I went in with the lowest of expectations, figuring it would be a mediocre movie with some fan-service references, but to say I was "pleasantly surprised" would be an understatement.
Where are your standards? This movie was a perfect meh. I watched it at the cinema and haven't watched it again. Hereditary on the other hand... that's true horror and terror. But Doctor Sleep is average.
By far my favourite horror movie of the past 15 years. I’m so annoyed at myself for not going to see this on the big screen. But I have the 4K Blu-ray to enjoy over and over. Mike Flanagan absolutely nailed it.
@@bz7661 I really enjoyed Hereditary and I love A24 in general, but Doctor Sleep was incredibly personal to me and, in my opinion, continued the story of The Shining in the best way possible even with its deviations from King’s book (that it, of course, did have to do to be a true sequel to Kubrick’s masterpiece original film).
Right! That’s where Flanagan really excels above any other horror director I’ve seen. His work has so much heart, too, which is very rarely seen in this genre.
The "recast" characters were done very well (Jack, Wendy, Dick). They all got the spirit of the character, without coming across as a parody or an impersonation.
One of the best modern horror movies to come out in the last decade! It has an amazing cast, a dread filled score and brilliantly beautiful cinematography that matches perfectly with Stanley Kubrick's style. I absolutely love this movie!
I love Doctor Sleep, it was very unfortunate that moviegoing audiences didn't embrace it. But I suspect that it will have a long life. Flanagan is a terrific director.
I love this movie! I watched it on the opening weekend and went in cautiously optimistic and came out so happy. It’s a shame the money men at Warner weren’t as pleased, I would have loved to see a sequel focusing on Abra with McGregor as her mentor force ghost. I’m sure the bad spirit of Rose The Hat is still out there…
The Shining is a classic one of the best horror movie's of all time and Doctor Sleep was a great sequel to it can't believe it tanked at the box office
I had just finished reading "The Shining" when the 1980 film came out. I was so hyped to see it and was so underwhelmed and disappointed. For years I never told folks I didn't care for the Kubrick film because I figured I just didn't get it since it was immediately heralded as a modern horror classic. I've watched it over the years and am still "meh" on it. I blame the casting. Jack and Wendy are so NORMAL in the book that the slow descent they both fall into is truly horrifying as the story unfolds. Jack Nicholson is a great actor but from frame one he already seemed unstable. Poor Shelley Duvall was pretty much relegated to playing a spineless church mouse (far removed from the sunny version in the book). When "Doctor Sleep" came out, I was impressed with both book and film.
I slept (pun intended) on this until very recently. I watched the directors cut which ran at around 3 hours I think. It's been the best film I've watched this year and has lingered with me since. I think if nothing else that's the sign of a film that has done something right.
I don't think people truly comprehend what a perfect balancing act this film manages to pull off. It somehow takes modern horror elements and Flanagan's directorial style and blends them with the more surreal, stylized elements of Kubrick's 'Shining' in a way that doesn't feel like they're at odds with one another and leaves the sequel still feeling like its own thing, finds a way to integrate the hotel into the story (the Overlook never makes an appearance in the 'Doctor Sleep' novel) in a way that doesn't feel like mere fanservice, but makes complete sense and plays into the ending seamlessly, *and* it even managed to get the blessing of the original film's biggest critic, Stephen King, despite it borrowing so much from the Kubrick version. Danny even completes Jack's redemption arc from the original novel by sacrificing himself to save Abra in the film, something that King heavily criticized the original film for not including. The fact that this movie not only exists but is as astonishingly good as it is, with everything coming together in a way that never feels forced or out of place, is a plain miracle, and a major testament to Mike Flanagan's skill and care as a director. I sometimes hear people describe 'Doctor Sleep' as "mid," but considering what a monumental train wreck this film *should* have been I'd say that's pretty darn impressive in of itself.
This movie blew me away. I went in with extremely low standards and came out crying out the end. Both for nostalgia and my love for Ewan playing the role of adult Danny. The original Shining movie meant a lot to my parents as a kid. i even got gifted Danny's red trike. It is one of the few sequels that really worked imo. The casting was one of the best parts of the movie, as well as the setting. Seeing the overlook hotel after so many decades gave me chills. Mike Flanagan did an incredible job directing this.
I loved this movie and honestly prefer it to the original shining. It’s my favourite horror movie (I would say it’s more a thriller) and it’s extremely underrated. Haunting of hill house creator, Obi Wan and Stephen King. Perfect.
I was blown away when I first saw this movie! Imagine my excitement when I found out there was a longer Director's Cut. I only wish I could have seen it in theaters.
I absolutely love Doctor Sleep and actually prefer it to The Shining. A phenomenal if not underrated masterpiece. It's why I want to see Mike Flanagan's A Nightmare On Elm Street. He's pitched it, but it's up to the Craven estate. We'll see.
TRIVIA: Danny Lloyd who played Danny Torrence in the 1980 Kubrick film has a cameo in Dr. Sleep. He's the guy in the stands at the ballgame discussing how good Jacob Tremblay's character (Bradley Trevor) is.
I absolutely loved this movie. It was such a relief from all the trash that comes out these days. And god damn Becca Ferguson was so sexy. My only gripe is the overuse of the heartbeat breathing thing. In theaters it got annoying after awhile.
Man, I was immersed immediately. I could tell right away this was gonna be an enjoyable watch. I rolled my eyes a little with the whole "steam" thing, and then I realized how much of a Dark Tower vibe it had, and remembered Blaine the train. That was it. I knew Flanagan was the man for the job, and I sat pinned to it throughout. I really enjoyed it, thought it was probably the last great horror movie I'd see for a long time.
Ewan McGregor playing a character with special abilities who disappears into obscurity for years before having to come back and reconnect with his abilities to use them to protect a young girl? Bet he wouldn't play that part twice!
This film was great to watch in the theater. I remember audience's were screaming during certain scenes which made me realize that horror films can still effect ppl and make them scream. Highly recommend checking this movie out!
Read both books. Saw Dr. Sleep in theater. Loved it. But then I saw the director cut.omg..he toed a hard line between both books .and the original film. He did an amazing job and I believe just like the shining film ..Dr. sleep will rise up because back to back these films rock.
Saw it twice in the theaters and was blown away by it -- such a great movie -- when I got the DVD and watched the director's cut, I believe that it is even a step above Kubrick's original
Can't help but think one reason they cast Henry Thomas was that he has experience playing an iconic horror character that's synonymous with the original actor. Thomas was cast as a young Norman Bates in the underrated Psycho IV: The Beginning and did a damn fine job.
"From Mike Flanagan, director of 'Oculus' and 'Ouija: Origin of Evil' and Stephen King, the author who brought you 'The Shining' and 'It: Chapter One & Two'"
Wrong about the TV series, it was pretty close to the book and also King was actually in it. Loved Dr Sleep and omfg going back into the Overlook was worth the ticket price alone.
There's something about the tone of this video. Perhaps it's the narrator's voice, delivery or just simply not being the other guy, but it comes across as borderline sycophantic.
How easily this could have been a disaster. But thankfully it's not. At all. They did such a good job with this fillm in every way. The cast, the direction, and the set design is incredible.
I loved the movie -- my only gripe would be: ... spoilers... Danny dies at the end of the movie whereas in the book he lives. I expect King to write a 3rd book involving Danny and Abra.
This one delivered everything I hoped for and more. I absolutely loved the book and when this was announced I followed it every step of the way. Caught it opening day and my jaw dropped when I saw the performances of Danny Abra and Rose. The shots from Danny right after their escape from the hotel hit just as strong and I hoped and brought me right back into the world.
I absolutely love this movie. I didn’t think it was possible to marry King and Kubrick’s versions and make a faithful adaptation to the book but damn does Mike Flanagan pull it off. The man is a genius. I think some people expected it to be like the original but if they had read the book, they would have known it was an entirely different type of story. And the True Knot is freaking terrifying
The movie is up there with The Godfather II, The Empire Strikes Back, The Two Towers and The Return of the King as worthy follow ups to Classics. Rebecca was truly terrifying. The ending definitely feels like a tip o' the cap to Ewan's most famous role. He comes back to help train a young person in the ways of a strange mystical system?
Great movie and amazing casts too. I'm so glad that Mike Flanagan did this one also. I've seen a lot of his movies with his beautiful wife and never been disappointed in any of his movies 👍👍👍👍
This was such a great film I was a fan of mike Flanigan after watching "Haunting of Hill House" and then I saw this and he became one of my few favorite directors. I've also only ever seen the director's cut of this film I can't imagine it without the extra 30 minutes
I loved Doctor Sleep it really was a good continuion of The Shinning. The performances were well done. Seeing the shot per shot of the opening of Kubrick's Shining plus hearing that familiar haunting musical score from The Shinning in theaters was damn amazing.
I love this movie. I'd hate to say it, but I think I might like it more than the shining, and I love the shining. Personally, I think I would have done a scene at the end a little different. I imagine danny, still possessed, running to the boiler room of the overlook hotel to turn off the boiler. He grips the lever, but his hand starts to shake and he starts to tear up as he fights with himself. Suddenly, a hand places itself over the hand Danny is gripping the lever with. The camera pans around to show Jack Torrance standing next to him. JACK: It's okay doc, it's okay. Danny let's go the lever, and the two sit next to each other in front of the boiler JACK: I'm sorry kiddo DANNY: ...It's ok Dad. I'm sorry too. (Beat) JACK: Do you think I'll get a chance to see your mom? At least... To tell her I'm sorry? DANNY: I think so. But I think she knows. Then the two sit quietly for a moment before we cut outside to see the hotel go up in flames
I really liked Doctor Sleep. It was among the slew of really great horror movies coming out in the mid to late 2010s and early 2020's. But after it came out I don't remember hearing much about it.
Just watched this, and I went into this thinking it's gonna be terrible. Man, was I wrong! This movie was great! Cast, effects, story, and sets where excellent. I can't believe at sat on the UHD for 3 years, before watching it.
I loved this film. I have read both books and I can see both sides of the criticisms, but I have to say Doctor Sleep is genius. It not only makes the 1st movie relevant, but it expands the mythos. My Wife refuses to watch horror movies. Even though she will watch dramas that have violent scenes that are at times worse than any horror movie. She loves this movie as well.
I really liked it. Some say the nostalgia bits were a bit too much but I ate it up man! I loved all the new directions the story takes but all the Overlook stuff had me hyped.
I loved this movie. So nice that we didn't just get a reasonably big budgeted horror film for a change, but also one that was neither an obnoxious noise fest like It chapter 2, nor one dangerously high on its own farts like your typical A24 offering.
Whats bad though is that this had decent size budget(even bigger than IT Chapter 1) and it didn't pull the numbers. Studios are a business and they see stuff like IT Chapter 2 as a huge success because of the money even though that movie was horrible. I am really hoping Salems Lot this year isn't a bust since that is my favorite King novel.
@@83442handle Yeah. Real shame. That said, was this film actually marketed, like, at all? I had no idea this thing existed until I picked it up on Blu Ray. Felt like it was put out there to die.
@@JustFun-ho6qy Good point. There was a marketing problem. There was a lot of discussion on Reddit at the time and most basically agree people didn't associate the name Dr. Sleep with a Shining movie(probably would have helped if they called it Shining 2: Dr Sleep though King might not have liked that). Ultimately the trailer didn't work well which is what ultimately sells the movie. Thats actually one thing I have to give full credit to for whoever did the marketing for IT Chapter 1.....that was a brilliant trailer to hook a wide audience in(though that was easy movie to market). I just looked over the UA-cam views and the Teaser for IT has 66 million hits and Dr Sleep has 13 million. Looking over the Dr Sleep teaser trailer I can see a big issue of it being confusing for the audience to even have a clue on what the heck this movie is about. They should have had it more focused on the antagonists (True Knot) because that would have intrigued the audience....... "vampires" who feed on the life force.
@@83442handle It was also something every one knew about in some capacity. It also had that very marketable Stranger Things vibe and at least one of the Stranger Kids was in it too.
I haven't seen it since I saw it at the theater in November 2019, but I think it is a fantastic continuation of the story. It came as a surprise to me that I would like it as much as I do because, beforehand, I didn't have high expectations for it.
While I didn't find the movie especially scary (but very disturbing) I still absolutely loved this movie and found it to be an amazing sequel to one of the best horror movies of all time.
"The mess that was the 1997 TV miniseries" was far from a mess. It not only was a better adaptation of the novel, but King adapted it himself. As for myself, I liked both versions, with the edge going to the miniseries.
Really good movie. Watched it several times and liked it more after the first viewing. Would love to see a prequel and what happened at The Overlook before Jack Torrance.
Hot Take: This movie would have done better box office wise if the marketing leaned less into it being a sequel to The Shining. Even though The Shining is popular, its rewatchability differs from movies like Halloween, etc. I was more interested in the new characters and scenarios than I was in sequel aspects.
Doctor Sleep was more direct in its story line while The Shining was mysterious all the way through. That might be one reason why some fans of the first film were disappointed in the sequels approach. Myself I believe this way the best way, why just duplicate a classic.
Well I personally seen it 2 x in the theater and bought a DVD. I enjoyed it. But maybe a diehard fan of the shinning was kinda like star wars and the phantom menace.
Doctor Sleep is my favorite sequel to any movie ever.. that is a huge achievement.. pushing Batman Returns and Gremlins 2 into 2nd and 3rd places respectively...
It wasn't a TERRIBLE film; I just didn't care. Turned characters into supernatural superheroes. It implies a "King-verse" I'm not interested in. But really, it wasn't made by Kubrick or by a director who shares his sensibilities. I think it can be summed up - generally - like this: the people who liked "Sleep" are more King fans than Kubrick fans, and the people who didn't like it are the reverse.
I was highly sceptical about this movie as I love The Shining and could not see a sequel working....how wrong I was!! Doctor Sleep is one of those beautiful rare pieces of cinema that is not only wonderful and compelling in itself but actually enhances the original. I struggle to say how impressed I was by this film, I expected little and I was overwhelmed by what I received and can't recommend it enough. If you are a fan of The Shining I have no doubt that you will love it and if you are not but enjoy a good Horror Fantasy I equally think you'll love it. It is in my mind one of the best movies of all time...and I don't impress easily

JACK: Do you think I'll get a chance to see your mom? At least... To tell her I'm sorry?
DANNY: I think so. But I think she knows.
Then the two sit quietly for a moment before we cut outside to see the hotel go up in flames
The doctor sleep directors cut is easily my favorite studio film in the last decade
Jacob Tremblay gave such a chilling performance in this. Apparently everyone on set was in shock and he just got up and ate some of his birthday cake.
@@83442handle Horrible? I mean Chapter 2 wasn’t as good as 1, but it had some amazing moments and a terrific cast
I haven't seen it since I saw it at the theater in November 2019, but I think it is a fantastic continuation of the story. It came as a surprise to me that I would like it as much as I do because, beforehand, I didn't have high expectations for it.
The directors cut of this is amazing. Def an improvement to an already great film
This movie is a dreadfully underrated masterpiece.
I thought Dr. Sleep was flawed, but excellent. I was thoroughly impressed. I thought it was a very worthy sequel to a masterpiece.
I was surprised how good this was
Just saw it tonight. It was good! I can't remember anything I've seen from Mike Flanagan that wasn't awesome.
A good sequel that managed to serve fans of both the Kubrick movie and the two novels
I can't believe this came out in 2019. Feels like it's been longer than that.
Isn't there an Ovwrlook series coming to HBO Max? I think its in development
Is that Raver Poker doing the commentary??
The more I learn about the movie the less I care.
The Shining, one of the view Horror-Movies I like. And I also like Doctor Sleep 👍
I keep forgetting this movie exists.. I keep meaning to watch it
Doctor Sleep is my favorite sequel to any movie ever.. that is a huge achievement.. pushing Batman Returns and Gremlins 2 into 2nd and 3rd places respectively...
Loved this movie. So well done.
One of the handful of movies that I’ve walked out of the theaters on. This movie was too disturbing for me.
Such a great movie! I found it in the bargain bin at Walmart for 5 bucks. Criminal!
Who cares that it didn’t make money. We have it. The night scene to the Overlook gives me chills every time
It wasn't a TERRIBLE film; I just didn't care.
Come back in another 10 years and it'll become as famous as The Shinning. It's in the series' DNA.
This is a perfect and welcome addendum to the Shining.
