2024 Kia EV9 Review | The 3-Row EV For The Masses?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 лис 2024
- If you're looking for an EV that's boxy, practical, and well... looks more like an SUV than most, you should check out Kia's new EV9. The only major issue with the EV9 is the range: it could be better, especially in base versions... On the other hand, it charges quickly, will shortly have Tesla Supercharger access, has an enormous third row, and has a big cargo area. Basically: It's the EV version of a Telluride, and that's not a bad thing. But... Is it too expensive?

Love my EV9 Land trim. I'd say the ride quality is very good on the highway, but can be a bit bouncy at lower speeds. For me it was between the R1S and EV9, and I went with the EV9 because Kia had some great lease deals, and the R1S wasn't available to lease in MN.
I've had the vehicle for a little over 4 months, and no real complaints.
Imo if it excels in so many ways and punches above its weight then it doesn’t matter if it’s expensive
Yeah but Kia needs to serve its clientele and not make something for ppl who won’t buy it
Being expensive seldom does not matter.
@@joemontana4370if the cars poorly executed in every way it doesn’t deserve to be expensive.
@@naveenthemachine If the car is expensive it doesn't matter if its well executed.
Nobody will buy that junk. It’s too expensive and it’s an EV. Dumb idea by Kia.
I've driven the GT-Line and really liked it, but would probably go with the Wind as it still has good power (unlike the anemic Light models) but avoids the large clompy wheels. I'm also hoping the exterior gloss black trim goes away on the Wind, as I can't imagine that wearing very well.
Does the Wind offer the same interior? e.g. 2nd row heating and ventilation, powered third row folding, etc.
Great review and I would love to own this EV.
As of last night when I checked on Kia's own website, they were still offering 0% APR on their EV9's. Across all trims.
I am earnestly contemplating if I want one. I saw a blue GT Line at a local dealership for 79K
While many would think that's pricey, especially since it's "only a Kia".
First, if that's what you think check yourself and educate yourself.
Kia and Hyundais aren't just "a Kia/Hyundai" anymore.
Second, consider what else you can buy in this segment for 79K.
The EV9 offers a STRONG value and quality proposition.
Why do you care about what others think?
I got all the information available and confirmed it’s just a Kia with $80k worth of batteries. These batteries will become obsolete in 3 years time while your $80k Kia will be worth $30k
Lease deals is the way to go
@@joemontana4370 If I told you Joe Montana was one of the most overrated QB, you'd refute it. So why do you care what others think? Good attempt at building an argument but try again.
@@ItsAlive111 lol one, if 80k is expensive to you try harder in life. Two, it's more sensible than a tesla.
I think the EV9 has far surpassed the model X in sales. Deservedly so!
My take is that this a very good first-year effort. There are number of things that ought to be improved, and hopefully they will.
One of the most glaring is the trims structure. To get what pretty much everybody needs with such a large and unconventionally shaped vehicle - parking and backward visibility aids - one has to go to upper trims, which also pack some expensive yet useless for many customers features. An example of such generally useless feature would be the configurable front illumination, with subscription option no less! It looks nice and futuristic at auto shows, but in real life gets easily damaged by flying debris so common on American roads. Just keep the front end simple and rugged, on all trims!
Another thing is the motors options. It is either one 200hp motor at the rear (very underpowered for such a heavy car), or two 200hp motors, which is very good, but I’d argue excessive and too pricey for what is effectively an EV minivan. Some other EV manufacturers are already past that stage and offer single 300hp motor at the rear on base EV trims, which appears to be in a sweet spot.
Another common complaint is extraordinarily easily scratchable plastic interior trim. Yet another, that one-pedal driving setting can’t be saved and has to be turned on over and over again, including every time after the car was put in reverse. And of course the infamous placement of the climate control display, grossly obscured by the steering wheel. All of this appears to be relatively easy for the manufacturer to fix. But will it be fixed promptly?
So, we’ll see how it all develops. Reviews are positive and sales numbers are good compared to other EVs in this segment, yet Kia has a limited time to refine EV9 and thus cement this EV’s advantageous market position. It can become an iconic family vehicle, like a Honda CR-V or Toyota Highlander, if Kia manages to be just as judicious as these companies applying the continuous improvements.
Great video, Nick - love it :)
1:21 the active shutters do not control airflow across the battery, as this battery is liquid cooled. Instead, the shutters control airflow to the heat exchangers. When the heat exchangers don’t need ambient airflow then the shutters can be closed by the system.
And since kia is smart or test their cars, they close when the temps are near freezing so that you don't clog it with snow. Something Tesla had to learn the hard way.
I love my box on wheels, but id never own one of these. I wish theyd stop making evs "futuristic" and just treat them like regular cars with different powertrains.
I'd seriously consider an EV9 if I could get 7 seater in the top trims
It’s 20k more than a regular 3 row. That’s just too much
Most 3 row mid size average around $45k-$50k. Yes there are cheaper options but most people in this segment shop the middle trims and not the base.
The Telluride starts at $36k. This starts at $55k but has a $7500 rebate. With dealer discounts I have seen them listed for $45k, and better equipped than the base Telluride.
Wish this was a minivan.
Sorry, I’ve driven this and it is not an A- for ride. The side to side jostling is so significant that my head was bobbing all the time. I was close to buying one but stuck with my Odyssey which has a far better ride and ultimately more utility for my young family. I’ll get an EV crossover sometime in the next 5 years though.
Yeah they're having a massive ride quality issue to the point they're doing buy backs on one's with this issue
@@james2042 I think that’s a separate issue the noise and rattling, even if they fixed that flaw it would still be bouncy I think. But yeah it’s not good
Wow amazing packaging. Smaller length but much more interior room and comfort for passengers. Kia Hyundai killing it and prob will put Tesla out of business
Nicely done, very thorough review. But given the EV9s price, I'd definitely shop the Lucid Gravity too.
Super cheap to lease now. Lease only or you will take a hit
Where is everyone finding nutso leasing deals? Admittedly, I'm a naif with leasing, but I haven't seen anything that compelling.
@@LoveStallion Kia's website shows 13000 in lease assistance on a 24 month lease. I'm seriously considering it, except that cargo space is so damn small. What good is a vehicle that can hold 6-7 people and none of their luggage?
What hit??
Too many fees in leases. You only will take a hit if you try to sell it within 3 years.
@@kiwan5425 value of the Ev drops like a rock. Example f150 lightning, $30k when you roll out of a lot.
"For the masses" - no, it is just to expensive
In on line with the EV9. Just don't trust kia hyundai yet. The 12v battery was the last issue.
I’m holding out for that four row.
It is just expensive like others SUV. So EV is not the point.
Yeah just don't worry about the
380 000 recalls for cars catching on fire
7 grand for a used chevy volt which gets almost all the cost savings from going ev, has no range anxiety, and is a true one car solution. getting 50-55 mi ev range in mine, and paying 21bucks/mo for insurance. dont kid yourself that youre saving any money going with a new ev. you would have to be able to pay for the vehicle after 2 years of ownership like i did to make up for the lost opprotunity cost of going with the cheapest phev in the world. and im not even talking about deprecieation, my volt apprecieated and is worth like 8-9k now lol
Volt is a hybrid. Not an EV. Big difference.
@@Digikidthevoiceofreason volt is a phev, not a hybrid. big difference.
And you are recycling when you buy used vs new.
@@vevenaneathna wrong. It’s a hybrid.
@@Digikidthevoiceofreason lol so when i drove 2500 miles last month, and my car warns me that it hasnt used any gas and its going to heat cycle the engine for 5 minutes, thats a hybrid huh? I guess its not worth arguing with someone who cant look these things up. you probably drive a newer ev and cant fathom someone saved as much on gas but paid used car prices.
Another EV that is too expensive to “save the world”
No EVs save the world. If you want to save the world ride a bicycle or take public transportation. No cars save anything
Where the hell is the EV3 they was hyping up...

It’s 2024. Who the heck is gonna buy that brick? In the days where even luxury Jeeps can’t get rid of their inventory on gas vehicles, Kia thinks they can sell this expensive ugly thing? Nuh uh. I don’t think so.
Why you so worried about it? )))
Styling is a subjective thing, so what is ugly to you may be great to others. I like the new styling of the EV9 (and the design language on all the new Kia EV's. I like that they don't look like copies of all the other SUV's and crossovers, as most of the others look bland and almost all the same it seems.
@@hey_guesswhatWhy are you so worried about it?))) And what makes you think I’m worried about something?)))
Best selling luxury vehicle is a rivian r1s and it's the same shape. This Kia already outsells Tesla Model X and that's the shape of an egg. So consumers say you're wrong.
Me, I love bricks on wheels
I am sorry but what is this design language?, it is so awful
Says you
@@james2042 Yeah pretty much
Have you seen it close by? Have you seen it from driver’s seat? Have you driven it? Pictures don’t give it justice.
