  • All I wanted was a parking brake but sometimes when you buy remanufactured parts they don’t use all the proper pieces. At least that’s my experience at Advance Auto. The correct rear brake calipers for this car are all but impossible to find. It took two months to track down a pair. All seemed right with the world until I got to the very end of the install when I ran into my issue. This was not put together with the parts that were removed from Ford.

    This is the biggest pain about owning an older car is that you know you're going to have to replace some parts and finding quality OEM parts could be a big headache. I know that the great majority of parts on the SVO were just common Mustang parts that are still readily available. You want a real migraine just go out and get you a Chrysler TC by Maserati. There's a reason why the owners are very willing to sell them for next to nothing.

    I hate to ask, but I have been going crazy for two weeks trying to track down a set of rear calipers. Can you provide a list of the part numbers if it’s something you have access to still? Thanks I really enjoyed this video. I am glad I am not the only person who has been pulling my hair out looking for a set.

      I do not have the part # it is the same number as the Lincoln Mark VIII and I picked one up at Napa. Phoenix Calipers in Chicago rebuilt my original and that worked very well. Best of luck!

    I wanted one of those cars when i was 18. I ended up with a rusty 1966 Mustang coupe with a 302 bored 30 over and i put 1969 351 4bbl heads on it. 3 speed on floor, leaking rear seal, 2.80 rears and in city clock nothing would touch it. I beat 400 trans am, 396 chevelle, and lesser cars.
    My Mustang would push snow level with hood, i traversed many fields and ditches with that car. still have the body in shed.

    I just found and subscribed to your channel. I was wondering what year your SVO is? I had an 84 SVO also a 81 mustang Lx and a 1990 mustang GT.. I currently have a 1972 Mach 1 Q code and 1967 Econoline with a 351. The Econoline is my work van and the Mach 1 has been my daily for eight years. I believe people underestimate how reliable these cars are when driven regularly. This situation works well for me because I live in a small Florida, beach town not a big city. I look forward to seeing more videos.

      I'm far from an expert on these cars (I'm learning as I go along as well). My car appears to be factory but I wouldn't bet on it. I would tell you to join one or a few of the Facebook SVO user groups. Many people there have owned these cars for years and know them inside and out.

    Thank you for posting this video. It is looking like I will have to replace the left rear caliper on my 84. Do you have the part # for the Napa caliper that you bought? I have been doing searches and nothing is coming up through either Google or the Napa/Summit/Advance/Autozone websites.

    • @jcy5591
      @jcy5591 3 місяці тому

      Never mind - I did a few more searches and found it. For anyone else looking for these calipers, the left rear is part # ADC 2296XB and the right rear is part # ADC 2296XA. They are listing them right now for $82 with a $58 core charge (USD).

      My parking brake now works great! I replaced the Advance Auto caliper and sent my core to Phoenix Caliper LLC in Chicago. They did a great job. It was a bit more $$ at $125 but works well.

      @@TonysFordsandMustangs I'm back working on mine after a bit of a hiatus. I went with the NAPA remans but plan to return them. One is leaking (I think) and I'm having the same issue that you had with your Advance part; I cannot attach my original small lever for the e-brake to the caliper since the "splined" male and female connection, well, won't connect. I went the cheap route since I plan on doing a restomod in the future using a lot of SN95 parts including the IRS. I just wanted a cheap fix for now so that I can drive the car. Well, that backfired! I'll try Phoenix like you suggested.
      The one thing I don't understand is how can the you "pop" the piston if the adjustments are a bit off? With every other car that I've owned, you would just bleed the system after reassembly and the piston would move outward to take up any gap. I'm just thinking ahead since I don't need to get the new Phoenix parts, install them, and then mess them up. Now let's see if NAPA accepts my return... 😠

    Use a "C" clamp and the old brake pad to push the piston back in. MUCH better than that thing.

    • @TonysFordsandMustangs
      @TonysFordsandMustangs  6 місяців тому +1

      The piston was popped on the old ones and the brake lever wouldn't move at all. They would need rebuilt however you can no longer buy the kits to rebuild them.

    O-o-o-Oreillys wouldn’t have done that to you 😆 have you ever seen the e-brake system on the 350s? It’s the dangest system I’ve ever seen as far as ease of maintenance goes. It was nice to see someone else with a Lowe’s store worth of hardware, I have a 5 gal bucket 3/4 full with what I’ve collected over the years in time of need

      When I was in the Air Force (jet engine mechanic) a lot of the hardware was one time use only and was thrown away. I grabbed bags and bag of that stuff and still have a bunch of it today.

    • @TonysFordsandMustangs

      The piston in the caliper isn't right. It's not for this car so they butched the lever to make it work. I sent my core out for a rebuild and expect it back shortly.
