    It would be cool if the bosses turned into healthy versions of themselves when defeated like the rest of the enemies and would be able to help you with different things throughout the game, like selling things to you or upgrading your items. This would give players an incentive to defeat the bosses besides some loot.

      Interesting idea! That would feel a lot more rewarding than just spawning a few more healthy crabs in its place. I'll write it down!

      Woah, turning the boss into an NPC on defeat? That sounds great! I already suggested in another comment that the boss could become uncorrupted and walk back into the ocean.
      What if the boss says something like "thank you for saving my life. give me a visit at some point. You will find me on the sea" which gives the player some idea that eventually you can build a boat and go out to seek for that new friend.

      If you work on a big project I found it helps working regularly on a constant progression instead of going all in and then get tired of it along the way~ He really organised everything very well it seems😊👍

      Agreed. Development can be extremely tiring and not having to “grind it out” all the time is something that is needed. Dev Duck you are a role model of mine as I am trying to find a good balance like you are!

    When the Horror Crab is on low HP he gets angry and his attacks make more deamage and are much faster (increasing the dificulty a bit and removes repetiton)

      @@DevDuck maybe his eyes could start glowing aswell? A boss that utilizes this well is duke fishron from terraria and it really allows you to distinguish the different phases

    So many fantastic new ideas and suggestions after just a few hours, thank you! I've written down as many as I can. I should have mentioned in the video that this was not meant to be a particularly well-balanced or fleshed-out boss. Assuming the horror crab stays in the final game, it will receive a big rework to make it a more engaging encounter. This was really just an exercise to help me make the architectural decisions and enhancements I needed to be able to introduce "bosses" to Dauphin in general. Hope that makes sense!

    I really like that the corruption spreads! It really builds the narrative because I mean, how did all these crabs get corrupted? Well, you can watch and find out! Also, ADORE the boss! It looks awesome!

    For the crabs "attack charger" animation, how about making more and more corruption particles come from its body?

      I like the idea. The current charging animation look like laughing to me at first. My first idea was, that this is an animation, that plays when you try to hit the crab in turtle mode, to show it is laughing at you for not making any impact on it.

    Here are my ideas:
    First: The horror crab should spawn in the beachside cave
    Second: A boss named: the coral giant. It’s made of a corrupted coral reef

    A little thing abput the crab: it's missing two legs
    and when it is attacking the particels from the spit ball(?) just fall down. I think it would look better if the particels fell towards the crab, and that the ball gets smaller the further away it is so it doesn't just plop out of existence.

    A diary with a section the player can write in.
    Diary goes something like: DAY 1: Cleansed the sand crabs. After defeating a abnormally big crab, a silver creature escaped from me. it seems to be headed to the reef. But im going to need a boat and diving gear or at least a snorkel.

    Also have notes in bottles that float from time to time towards the shore that contain recipes, missions and more. and perhaps some dialogue from the character speaking to itself to guide the player.

    The crab boss looks good, but, in my opinion, he should be a bit darker, like he doesnt look that much like the smaller crabs.

      the huge crab is a boss, and bosses should be looking diffrent then other monsters in my opinion

      matan goldstien I get that is a different enemy, but the different animals should have consistency. The crab boss is a bigger version of the crab enemies so it should have the same color scene. Also, the corruption turns the crabs black so it’s also a continuity issue. But that’s just my opinion.

    The little touch of the corruption spreading is one of those "aha" moments in game dev where you just realize a feature makes a whole lot of sense. It really does make the world feel richer because now just that simple act of spreading corruption is telling the story right in front of the player's eyes.
    I'm liking the updates! I would suggest later on you might want to animate the boss crab becoming un-corrupted however... Right now it looks like a small crab appears from the boss crab, but you could do a few frames of animation to "shrink" the boss crab down to a normal crab size... or even better, a larger than average crab size, which would explain why it's a "boss". Like maybe it's normal size is double that of a regular crab. Just a thought.

    You should add an encyclopedia, like Animal Crossing so if you get parts from an organism it goes into your encyclopedia and it shows your past feats and challenges.

    I think that making the crab boss into a friendly "NPC" who you can talk to for lore, or have like a shop or something would be pretty cool.

    I think making the boss drop a larger shell could be a pretty great idea, and that could eventually be used as some form of armor or shield (either directly or through some form of crafting)

    i absolutely love the crab boss design. i really like the idea of bigger badder enemies looking a lot scarier and creepy than the cute weak enemies. and i would love to see the enemies get gradually more and more disgusting as you progress. as if you were diving deeper and deeper into the deep dark sea, discovering the monstrosities below! :O

    I think the Horror Crab (name suggestion: The Crabtastrophy) looks cool, I especially like that it can corrupt other crabs.

    4:53 this movement is almost universally recognized as laughing in pixel style games.... you might want to change it up before someone thinks the crab is making fun of them in the middle of the bossfight...

    It'll be a nice feature if when you first arrive the island is in a bad state, but as you heal the wildlife the island becomes more beautiful

    I think Boss should spawn corrupted crabs while the player is fighting it.

    The only thing I think that needs to be changed is the boss’s health. I feel like it would be possible to kill it in a couple seconds. If you added a second ability when it’s close to dying, that could maybe knock the player back or something like that, that could maybe help balance it out.

    I'm glad you made it break into smaller crabs instead of just having some random giant crab, it definitely keeps the world more relatable. I'm not a fan of the health bar shrinking from both sides... skyrim did that and I never knew how much damage I was actually doing or taking

    My suggestions:
    - Raise the z index on the green attack that the boss spits out so it is in front of the crab instead of behind it.
    - increase the velocity of that attack. Right now it doesn't really matter if you anticipate its coming with the charge up animation, the attack moves slow enough that you can easily dodge it with a slow reaction.
    - crabs with less corruption should emit fewer corruption particles.
    - perhaps make the boss crab a darker purple, closer to the black color of the other crabs?
    - and then obviously you're not there yet, but sound design will be important in this fight, as it can be a good indicator for when attacks fall against armor vs when they actually deal damage.

    With the attack animation of the crab boss, i think the particles should be *following* the "sphere", instead of being displayed *underneath* the sphere.

    Imagine just clearing an area of corruption but forgetting one bat and when you backtrack you have to save literally everything you just saved

    Give another motive to the protagonist save the island. The corruption can spread in humans too, so, my idea is to make a corruption bar that once it get full, the player die and create a corrupted human in his place, so when the player respawn and kill the corrupted human, it restore the inventory itens.
    I think this is a good idea :)

    Wow I really like the corruption spreading mechanic! To make it feel even more urgent maybe the corrupt crabs could seek out nearby healthy crabs and try to corrupt them?

    What if when the corrupted crab comes into view, or "Spawns", then all of the healthy crabs in a certain radius become in a state slightly different from corruption? In this state you can't remove the corruption by attacking the normal crabs, you have to defeat the boss one. Its almost like a mind control state where the crabs are controlled and always head straight towards the player. How does that sound?

    I really like this first iteration of the boss! The pixel art is great! Also, I love how the boss has different phases/behavior.
    In terms of gameplay: what if instead of killing/destroying the boss, it becomes uncorrupted on defeat and wanders back into the ocean? It would fit the theme of "not killing but saving". From what I have seen so far, the corruption is the primary reason for these creatures to be aggressive. Also story-wise, it seems that big crab is actually a mother animal that gives birth to these smaller ones.
    Sorry for my random rambling here - I really like what you have done so far!

      Totally get what you mean! That's what I tried to achieve by having the boss break apart into the smaller crabs. But I have heard other feedback that maybe the defeated boss should become an NPC, so I'll have to keep that in mind!

    Nice Progress! I really like the corruption mechanism. Later you could make objects in the map that infect other organisms, not only organism to organism. Like special plants, minerals or other things that spread corruption. They could also have a pattern like a shroom that spreads a cloud of corruption every x amount of time.
    Also, I think the name of the Boss is sometimes really difficult to read.

    Boss idea: you walk out onto a stormy beach and a giant squid appears out of the water. The gimmik with this boss would be that the boss is in the back ground and your in the forground. You move around to avoid stormy waves and the squids tentocles and projectiles. You use some sort of device to knock back the projectiles back towards the boss

    I think you should make the boss area vertical because of how the boss is oriented. It would also suggest where to attack so players understand quicker, Really cool though!

    I think you should add an effect where when the player hits the enemies the corruption runs off the enemy in the opposite direction of the player's attack and fades away instead of just changing colour when hit (in my opinion) 👍
    Btw: the game looks amazing, keep up the great work!👌

    I think the boss looks Great! It has the size and shading of something that'd be menacing, though the red claws feel a little weird, as well as the head not moving when he walks feels a stiff and the fact that he shoots the ball before the charge animation is done is also offsetting. Great Job though, i'm excited to see how this game turns out!

    On the title scene, you could add some clouds, also i think big crab should have an area, that you can only acess after something, it being killing enemies,exploring dungeons or getting xp in a way.

    In my opinion, the horror crab's charging animation looks like it's laughing as a taunt instead or charging an attack.

    Hey! So I just thought I'd throw this out here in case it can be useful. For the direction the character faces, you could make it so the character has a default state and an agro state, so when moving around normally he'll face the direction he's moving in, then if you attack he will attack in the direction of the cursor but will then keep facing in the direction of the cursor for a bit. So if you keep attacking he's not constantly swinging back and forth. But if you don't attack again for a second or two he goes back to facing the movement direction.     the boss only takes damage from the front so you can put it at the end of a room inside the cave
    to make it more comfortable to face it, it could also attack in area with its pincers hitting the ground

    Love the new boss! One thing I think is worth considering regarding the re-corruption mechanic is that depending on how useful the crab shards (parts? pieces?) are players are now going to be able to farm for crab shards by leaving one crab corrupted and just re-corrupting the others and defeating them over and over again for the shards. May or may not be something you want to prevent but just something to consider :)

    These dev logs are awesome! One thing I think could provide more challenge to the boss is if it’s spitballs explode when they collided with something and left some green goop that would last for a couple seconds and damage the player, making it so they couldn’t just sit below it the whole time and they would actually have to move around more

    First video that i've seen from you, but i did enjoy it, i'll look at the others after i finish this comment, but i'd like to share and idea.
    I'll base this of Henry Sim's idea, which the boss once defeated would become uncorrupted, which i think does sound pretty cool, but i also believe they should change in some ways, like the corruption gave them special abilities or features which they no longer have, like the Horror Crab maybe would become smaller, he'd still be bigger than the normal crabs, maybe he was just like them, but after the corruption he became bigger, and without with he'd lose some of that size.
    This is just my take on Henry's idea, maybe you already have something else in mind.

    I recommend giving the corruption bar a more organic look (unless the way you did it here prevents that) because it would give the bosses more of a corrupted feel.

    I love the update! I’ve seen some really great suggestions down below about the boss becoming an npc afterwards and maybe even heading to the ocean to inspire players to venture out. I saw you pinned those comments. The boss looks great it’s definitely going to be a good shock from fighting the pervious crabs. Great work!

    Very cool, I especially love the spread of corruption mechanic. For the boss I'd say, having the poison attack "spit" out of his mouth at the player location while leaving behind a poisonous puddle would be a cool mechanic so the player will need to plan out his movement and strategy in order to defeat the boss.

    Really cool! I think it should have a bit more polish though (perhaps you are already planning this):
    I think it would be cool:
    - If corruption spreads to a healthy organism, let the healthy organism flash red/ show a animation or something, so it is immediately visible corruption is spreading.
    - I think the boss projectiles need a bit more 'impact', now they disappear if they hit something, but would be cool they splatter once hitting something.
    - Perhaps boss attacks (but also player attacks and being hit) would feel more impactful with a screenshake.

    Idea for the boss: when the crab king (whatever it’s called) gets killed, the crabs will get shot up in the and and then return. When the crabs reach the ground, they’ll rush to the water and when they reach the collision on the ocean, they will make do an “crawling into water” type animation.

    Looking good, my criticisms would be;
    1. The boss's projectile looks a bit too symmetric/uniform, making it a bit more asymmetric might look better. At the moment it kind of looks more like a tennis ball.
    2. Making the boss's projectile interactive might add for another interesting mechanic other than to just wait for an opening. Maybe so you can hit it back at the crab, which adds a small window of vulnerability.
    Alternatively maybe make it so if the projectile hits an object, it leaves a pool of damaging goop for a short while?
    Other than that I think it looks great :)

    One piece of stylistic feedback that might or might not resonate with you - I feel it would look better if the "background" of the corruption bar was either transparent or black/dark grey (i.e. the part that gets visible when removing corruption), instead of orange. The orange is awesome for the border, and it should stay, it just gets too much if it's also the colour of the "background" of the corruption.

    you should make a boss arena, and a entery. a place where you know you're gonna fight a boss even before you enter. also make a way to visually see that this is a boss battle, like the ground shaking or a loud roar

    A cool idea might be in the forest area there could be little bugs. As it is an rpg they could drop little items. And if we are going crazy there might be a travelling elephant that can sell you items. Not sure if this has been done or said. Btw loving this series!

    I didn't really see you cover the secondary vs. primary boss attack in this video, so I was thinking that you could have the crab try to grab the player with its claw as a way to make the fight more difficult since they have to be in front of the boss to hit them. Along the lines of corruption spreading, it could be nice to have 'infected' zones on the map like the beach where the map and background itself starts as corrupted, but as you clear the enemies it purifies the corruption somehow. Small recommendation for the inventory, I think you should add outlines of item types in the equipment inventory slots like head, chest, legs, and feet to show where to equip certain items. I might've missed it, but have you made the player's health bar yet? If not, you could have a system similar to the crabs where a number shows up rather than a heart system like the player has 100 health. I really like this devlog even though I'm not really into game development! It's super relaxing and interesting to keep up with. Good luck and I think you're doing great!

    For the projectile stack, you should probably make the slimeball be drawn above the crab, so you don’t just see it isn’t covered up.

    Really cool and fitting boss! Though I think it might be a better mechanic to make regular versions that the bosses transition into when defeated, and perhaps the smaller enemies could spawn in the room to signify further than healing the boss also heals the area. It will add to the game's world, and will be a sort of reward for the player, since they'll want to defeat bosses to reveal the healthy form.

    Maybe at the title screen you could add a few seagulls flying over or past the island every now and then
